Friendly hotel in a great location

This hotel is located an easy 10-15 minute walk around the bay from the centre of Bassterre with lovely views across to the south of the Island and Nevis. The hotel is set into the hill, so there are a lot of stairs to navigate when getting to your room but the hotel staff are happy to help with bags. The rooms are big and comfortable (one minor point - they only have feather pillows, which is luxurious but not so good for people with allergies. . ..), but the real highlight here is the pool area - with clever landscaping making it feel like a real oasis - and there is a swim up bar. The two restaurants are both nice - one at the top of the hotel overlooking the bay, the other at the bottom where you can drink a cocktail or eat a meal with the sea virtually lapping at your feet. The staff at the hotel were unfailingly polite and helpful - from reception, housekeeping, restaurant, bars and security, they always went out of their way to help. We had a slight issue with the room on arrival, but the staff responded well and swiftly to resolve this. Bassterre itself is small, but (except for Sundays) is lively and welcoming - we always felt safe and spent a lot of time relaxing in the local bars (particularly those around the ferry terminal) and eating the street food on offer. We spent the second half of our holiday in Frigate Bay but there was a lot more to do here - it felt more 'real' and less touristy - even when the cruise ships were in as most of their passengers stayed in the port area or were ferried out to beaches and didn't venture into the main town. We would definitely consider staying here again when we return to St Kitts.

We enjoyed our stay at the 'Ocean Terrance Inn', which is generally known just as 'OTI'. Welocme by reception was friendly and we were given room 102, a 'Superior Room' with a big terrace in front. It had tables, chairs there and a great view all the way to Basseterre and to the island of Nevis. The spacious room has a doublebed and everything else we needed. The same can be said of the bathroom with liquid soap and body lotion dispensers by Gilchrist&Soames. The chambermaid, who did an excellent job cleaning the room, brought us shortly after our arrival some extra towels to use for the hotel's pool. The pool area, which is playfully arranged, is nice to look at and to hang around in one of the sunchairs, but is not really ideal for a good swim. The town of Basseterre is only about 15 minutes away, an easy walk along the coast. There are restaurants near the hotel.

Fobbed off with 'plumbing issue' when hotel over-booked

After a long journey from 5am, we arrived at OTI mid afternoon to be told that there was a plumbing issue which meant we could not stay at OTI and they had arranged for us to stay at a hotel on the other side of Basseterre. We had booked and paid for a garden suite at the 4* OTI last October specifically as it was within walking distance of the cricket stadium as the purpose of our visit was to attend the WI v Eng cricket match. After being reassured that the alternative hotel was the same standard as OTI, we were taken to the other hotel which turned out to be NOT within walking distance of the stadium and NOT the same standard as OTI. It was 3* and decidedly jaded. In addition, OTI had not forwarded any payment for the room even though we had given them our travel agent's voucher. So I was required to pay $570 for the room in a downgraded hotel while OTI kept my money but provided no room. It became obvious that OTI regularly do this when they have overbooked, which had happened on this occasion due to the large contingent of cricket supporters in town. Such shoddy treatment and the derisory compensation offered are really unacceptable. I would not recommend booking a room in advance at this hotel as it appears they do this regularly. We were quickly moved to the Marriott the following morning by our excellent travel agent who was not impressed by OTI fobbing him, and us, off. He will not be booking any more clients into OTI.

Beautiful place!

Our room 109 was large, lovely, and comfortable. It had a GORGEOUS view of the harbor, and a balcony with two chairs and a table, so we sat outside a lot and enjoyed the view and the breeze. The air conditioner worked perfectly, as did the mini-fridge. We took our own coffee, filters, and Melitta cone, so we used the little coffeemaker just to heat the water, which worked fine. The king-size bed was VERY comfortable, and the linens were soothing....LOVED the bed. The people at the front desk were unfailingly cheerful, courteous, and helpful. They got us taxis, refreshed our room keys (which had a tendency to fade), and answered our questions. Their two restaurants were okay, but keeping track of which one was open on which day for which meal was challenging. The premises have lovely gardens and terraces, a wading pool, a private dining room, and so on. It would be a wonderful place for a corporate retreat for twenty or so people. It's just a fifteen minute walk to the downtown, where the shopping is, but it's not close to any beach. We would definitely stay there again if we went to St. Kitts again -- it is SO much nicer than your cookie-cutter Marriott or Radisson or whatever....
