Cancun Family Visit
SEAN C.
Dec 02 2017
Traveled with the children to Cancun and we could not be happier with the reception and the overall service that we received!! Upon our we were met by the hotel staff who all had smiles and were able to deal with my broken Spanish speaking skills. One of the hotel greeters, Salvador, brought my family into the reception area and was very cordial and thoughtful!! He was able to assist us with all of the needed trips that we planned and I have nothing but high praise for all of the staff there, from the room service to the variety of restaurants that they offered there. When we return to Cancun or if my friends with family members are wishing to go to Cancun and they are wanting to experience a great family adventure, Ocean Coral and Turquesa will receive my highest recommendation!!

The stay was awesome, the pools and facility is clean, well maintained. The food is delicious. We will definitely go back to this resort. Our only complaint would be that the mattresses were horrible. The staff couldnt have been more accommodating.

I like how Apple puts these all inclusive packages together. What I don't like is how we are pushed to listen to a 2 or 3 hour sales pitch and when you do not buy, they become rude. Our saleslady walked away from our table and left us there. Rude, rude, rude.

Second H10 Hotel visit
JASON E.
Sep 23 2017
Our stay at H10's Ocean Coral and Turquesa in Riviera Maya was outback second stay with this chain. Our other was the Ocean Blue in Dominican Republic, so that's is where my comparison comes from, Coral and Turquesa lack some of the service that the Dominican resort had, all the staff were equally friendly, and all very helpful. Our room/ maid service was sub par, we had upgraded to the "privilege" status and that includes daily turndown and minibar restock, neither of which happened daily, and the one day happened at nearly 8pm. The food was exceptional, better than Dominican, unfortunately we were in the off season so not all the restaurants were open every day, not a big deal just slightly annoying. The poolside and organized entertainment was pretty terrible, it was done by amature performers, which was still pretty good for what it was, just not great. The beaches aren't cleaned very well at all really, organized seaweed is probably the best description I can think of. The pools were excellent at every point, butlers at the Privilege pool were amazing, Ricardo was the absolute best, that man worked like crazy to make sure our group of 10+ people were well supplied with great drinks. Pamela and Luis the Privilege concierge were excellent.

Not an ideal honeymoon
ADAM H.

I would like to just start off by saying I really think this resort has great potential, and that during peak season, is probably a great time. Now that being said, it seemed like my wife and I picked an non-ideal time to visit this resort for our honeymoon. To elaborate on some of the issues we experienced: -Main walkways were closed --Our room was on the far west side of the resort, and the entire walkway from lobby and westward was blocked for roof repairs -Main restaurants closed for renovations --The restaurant by the bar pool halfway through our stay closed and immediately began demolition for renovations -Entertainment very lacking --This one disappointed us the most; it seemed like most scheduled events were skipped or cancelled. Entertainment staff did a subpar job of getting people together and engaged, and even sometimes, there were no entertainment staff around. --Furthermore entertainment staff that would focus more energy on selling external products like Coco Bongo (there outfits had the ads on them too!) -Beaches that were heavily littered with seaweed, and were unable to be maintained --I get that this isn't something you can control, but beaches are a huge selling point of any resort, and it's not fair for paying customers to book this resort without knowing the beach condtion -Birds --The birds that infested the resort were not enjoyable, and were just simply pests. They were very loud and would mooch for food A few other inconveniences that we had were a sink malfunction where the sink stopped working, then spewed black liquid; failed 'privilege' member features such as missing slippers/toothbrush and dirty robes (all of which I mentioned to staff but none were resolved); and extremely long waits at the route 66 restaurant. Now please understand that I'm not writing this to disrespect the resort or write about how 'bad' it is, because I really DID enjoy the resort and have a good time. However, this was my wife and I's honeymoon, and wouldn't you want your experience to be perfect? I totally understand that nothing is perfect, but for the price we paid, and the experience we got, we aren't satisfied. I did a lot of research and spent a lot of time picking where to spend our honeymoon, and Ocean Coral y Turquesa had everything we wanted. That is why I am disappointed it wasn't as perfect as I know it could have been. I understand every resort will have an off-week, but I don't believe it's fair for customers to pay for those weeks.

Food was good very little wait (sensai was a disaster) , the bare staff (Irving, Angel and Mario) were phenomenal and really made the trip special. They asked every night how we were, how our day was and knew our names and were very personable. The Room we had, was up to date, and the Ocean View was AWESOME, we looked out about 200 feet to the ocean. The treks were awesome and we booked through Apple Vacations. They made it so easy to get to the hotel, get back to the airport, and answered all the questions we had. Sensai: Oh man what a train wreck. Let me say this the food was AWESOME but it was such a headache to get into. Reading the reviews it says to be there around 1030 to make a reservation at 6,7:30, or 9. Newsflash, if you don't have premier then you wont eat at 7:30 and you most likely wont eat at 6, and some nights they are completely full. Well the first day, they were closed and then the next day they told us the reservation system was at 12, because we had some jerk European show up at 5 of and say he was the front of the line, needless to say things almost escalated quickly. So now you have to wait at guest services to make the reservation at 4 pm for the next night. Shout out to the front desk though that got us in, I tried for three days and they hooked it up. As for the food, It is a fixed menu, Benny Hanna style, so if you have picky eating kids, or are a picky eater please don't waste a seat for the rest of us. Literally had 4 children refuse to eat because they did not want sushi or soup and they all left to go get hot dogs and burgers. They really should make this an adult only or over 12 at least restaurant and further add a dress code and you will eliminate a lot of people. Finally it was HOT in there, pump the AC guys you have 6 open flames going. Also, I don't know how they figure out the reservations but we had an entire seating area empty and one only half full. They may have been short a chef, but its a really bad look telling people you are full when your table up front has 8 open seats. They really have to work something out because I was beyond upset until they got us in on the last night. Also you have to be there at 9, but you wont sit til almost 930 so go check in and grab a drink.

Had the best week at OCT
Sarina E,
Mon Dec 11 18:36:42 EST 2017
This is the second time being in the Mayan Riviera. I liked how close this resort is from the Cancun airport. First impressions of the hotel as arriving was WOW. Check in was super easy and fast. Amazing views of the ocean from the outside of the lobby! I had a drink on the roof top with my husband, aunt & uncle before heading to our rooms. PROS -Easy to navigate -Staff were so wonderful! Carlos & Gustova from the swim up bar were my favorite people!!!! They treated us so good, really took care of us and made our week honestly. I miss them already!!!! -The Mexican restaurant was to die for (We went 2 times) -The pools were awesome (swim up bar is where we mostly stayed) -Had great entertainment in the swim up bar pool daily! Soo much fun! -The drinks were really good. We tried so many different types of shooters -Buffet had lots to choose from, you will not go hungry. Snack bar had yummy food too CONS -The shower was cold sometimes and it smelt like sewage the entire time. -The beach had ridiculous amounts of seaweed and was rocky, so bring watershoes. -We went to Italian, Japanese, Blue Moon, Capre restaurant, honestly didn't care for any of them. Tiny portions, cold, and was pretty disappointing. Japanese didn't put on much of a show and had two grills so felt very disconnected from the whole group. -Complete lack of nightly entertainment Overall we had a really fun time. Beautiful resort. Awesome staff. That's all you can really wish for on a vacation!

Background: We first came to the Mayan Riviera in 2001, and we have been vacationing at all inclusive hotels twice a year ever since. The majority of our stays have been to this beautiful part of the world, but we have also been to the west coast of Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. The majority of our stays to the Mayan Riviera have been to the Bahia Principe, but we have also stayed at other 5 star resorts in the Playa Del Carmen area. After researching for a long time, and reading reviews on Trip Advisor as well as other sites, we decided to stay at the OCT this time and we were not disappointed. The OCT received the Condé Nast Traveler award for the best international resort in 2013 and we can certainly see why. The OCT is by far one of the best resorts we have ever been to! Overview: We stayed at the OCT at the end of November/beginning of December. The hotel is laid out in a horseshoe shape, and you can see the beautiful turquoise waters of the Caribbean from almost every area of the hotel. It is super clean and spotless. Everyone is extremely friendly, and they always have a smile on their faces. When you first arrive, the check in for the Privilege and Premium guests is to the far right as you enter the lobby, and the check in for all other guests is to the far left. Rooms: We were in building 17, room 17316, and it was a perfect location for us. It overlooked the kid’s pool, and we had an ocean view from our balcony. The room is a ‘junior suite’ and is very spacious. We had a king size bed and there was also a hide-a-bed in the ‘living area’. The bathroom has a soaker tub, rain shower and separate toilet. (Hint: If you don’t want to hear the ‘sounds’ coming from the toilet when it is in use, make sure to turn up the volume on the TV. Like most hotels, the toilets are in a glass stall, which creates a bit of an echo and leaves little to the imagination). There is also a large make up mirror attached to the wall next to the shower. Beach and Pool: Like almost all other resorts, the ‘towel game’ was in full force. I honestly do not understand why management at these resorts allow guests to put their towel on a chair when it is obvious that they will not be using it right away. All it would take would be a warning to all guests upon check in that towels would be removed from unoccupied chairs (after a certain time frame) and then follow up randomly to enforce the rules. We were always early risers so we were always able to find a chair somewhere, but it was frustrating seeing chairs reserved and unused for hours on end. Every day, we would head to the beach first thing in the morning and then go to the kid’s pool after lunch. The beach is by far one of the best beaches in the area. While there is a bit of seaweed, it is much worse at other all-inclusives we have been to. There is a tractor that pulls a ‘turf rake’ and it goes up and down the beach several times a day gathering up the little bit of seaweed that washes up on shore. We were always at the northern end of the property and we did not encounter any rocks at all when going into the water. The kid’s pool was always quiet and it was so nice to sit in the sun, enjoy a good book and perhaps have a quick siesta and a refreshing dip in the pool when we got too hot. Beach/Pool Bar Service: There is a bar at the kid’s pool as well as the ‘party pool’. They also have beach and poolside service. The servers are exceptional and they quickly get to know you and what your favourite drinks are. Like all the other staff at this resort, they are always happy. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to walk up and down the sandy beach in full uniform under the hot sun carrying a trayful of drinks, but they always do it with a smile on their faces and nothing it too much to ask. Entertainment: We did not partake in any of the evening shows, but we did sit in the lobby every night and listen to the various musical talent that they hotel brings in on a nightly basis. There is also a small area in front of the stage where guests could dance. It was always the perfect ending to a perfect day – sitting under the tropical breezes, listening to some live music while enjoying a delicious cocktail or ‘special coffee’ Restaurants: The food at this resort is excellent. We ate at all the restaurants and everything was delicious. The waiters at all the restaurants and the buffet were exceptional, and we always left satisfied and in awe of the great service after every meal. One of the great things about this hotel is that they do not have the archaic rules like other hotels do that only allow a couple of restaurant reservations per stay. At the OCT, no reservations are required, and we never had trouble getting a table. In fact, on our first night, we did not arrive until after 7 PM. After we checked in and were shown to our room, we decided to try and eat at one of the restaurants, but were not very optimistic that we would be successful. We went to the Italian restaurant and were ushered right in. Our waiter was Jonathan, and at the end of the meal, we asked if we could have some Bailey’s with our coffee. His immediate response was ‘of course, this is your house and you can have anything you want’. This set the tone for our vacation, and we knew at that moment that we were in for a great vacation. For breakfast, there are 2 omelette stations, as well as pancakes, waffles, french toast, fresh fruit and just about anything else you would want. The lunch buffet has an abundance of foods to choose from including a pasta station, an Asian station, and an array of seafood including calamari, jumbo shrimp, salmon, sea bass and mussels. There is also a juice bar where you can have freshly made veggie or fruit smoothies and my personal favourite, coconut ice cream. Good to know: There is a teen’s club at this hotel. This is the only hotel that we have ever seen that offers this For the NFL fans, they play Monday night football on a huge outdoor screen next to one of the bars They serve delicious ‘fire coffees’ every Wednesday night There are vendors that come in every Saturday night and set up tables Just to the north of the property, there are a couple of vendors where you can purchase souvenirs, get a massage or book a snorkel tour There is also a small hut by the kid’s pool where you can also purchase souvenirs. There is a jogging path that runs the length of the property, right next to the sea so you can enjoy a beautiful view while getting some exercise. Check out time is 12 PM. We were not picked up from our hotel until 5 PM and since our room was not available for late checkout, we were given a courtesy room to shower and change in. This is one of the few hotels that offers this. Apologies for the length of this review, but I believe that a great stay deserves a great and detailed review so future guests will know exactly what to expect. At the OCT, you will have a great stay and will not be disappointed.

Great cheap extended weekend getaway

This was my second trip to riviera maya this year but at a different resort. I found a steal of a deal about a month before we were scheduled to fly out. For $500 a person for 4 nights, roundtrip airfare from NYC and airport transfers booked one month in advance. Some of the things I loved about the resort was that it was so close to the airport, only about a 20 minute ride which was much nicer than the hour and a half ride we had to take the last time to another resort in Puerto Aventuras. We arrived at the resort around noon and checked in. We were unfortunately told that we could not receive our room until 3pm. I am an Expedia gold plus status member and this is a VIP resort. The extras we received were a room upgrade from garden view to ocean view, a bottle of wine for each room, and spa credits that we unfortunately didn’t have time to use. The resort is spotless, the ground are beautiful and the food is pretty good for an all inclusive. We spent most of our days by the swim up bar. Gustavo is amazing always working hard and keeping us happy and hydrated (with alcohol). Gustavo during the day and Paolo at night we’re always mixing us up something new to try. These guys work their butts off to make everyone happy and provide amazing service. Even though this is an all inclusive I always bring $5 bills to tip employees for great service throughout the day. Please do not forget to tip, we always tipped our waiters, bartenders, and cleaning staff for great service. “polo” who is part of the entertainment team always had us laughing and getting involved in activities around the pool. I recommend trying all of the a la Carte restaurants, the duck at blue moon was amazing and fell right off the bone. Sensai which is the hibatchi restaurant is the only one that requires a reservation. Food was subpar, very greasy, and service was just ok. The buffet restaurants were always changing their options and never disappointed. We only discovered petite creperie on our last day and regret not going sooner. The food is phenomenal. The Mexican restaurant was slightly disappointing in food quality but that was made up with the amazing service. You must try the peanut butter tequila that the manager makes himself, tastes just like a Reese’s cup and ended up buying a bottle and wish I bought more. I can’t remember the waitresses name but she was amazing. She had the manager come over to our table and set up a tequila tasting which they lit in flames and then poured over ice. They also scared the living s*** out of my brother with a “dessert surprise” which had a fake snake underneath and may have been the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him that scared in my life. Only complaints I have are people who reserve pool chairs early in the AM and never end up showing up throughout the day. Also wish there was more nightlife, everything dies down around 11pm and there’s only one bar open til 1am. Highly recommend going to coco bongo, amazing show and such a fun night out. Nightlife if one of the important aspects for my group of friends (24-26 year olds) and wish there was more to do for us at the resort at night. That it the only thing holding me back from returning unless I keep finding deals like this. Thank you again to Gustavo, Paulo, Polo, and the staff at the Mexican restaurant for always keeping us happy, laughing, and with a drink in our hands.

Two weeks of glorious winter sun.

This was our first two week break for some time, and it certainly lived up to expectations! We were part of a wedding group, but had somehow become detatched in our accommodation from the rest. This situation was swiftly addressed and were housed nearby the rest of the group within a couple of days, so top marks for that, reception! Our room, 18301, was very comfortable, and was kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. Top marks to housekeeping here, also. Throughout our two week vacation what was very clear to us was the excellent attitude of all members of staff we encountered. I feel I must single out a three individuals however who made our visits to the lobby bar area such a very welcoming and warm experience. Betsy, Alba and Brenda made us feel so at home through their great customer care, that they deserve this special mention. Top marks to them.
