1st Trip to Mexico
DEBORAH C.
Jun 06 2018
It was our first trip to Mexico for our Anniversary. The first booking, I had reservations about going due to the concerns about violence in the area. When I went to cancel, I was told that I would receive a "Credit". I was confused since I had purchased the insurance. I was not told at the time that you had to choose cash as an alternative to receive that benefit. I chose to keep the trip, but then ran into my husband possibly not receiving his passport in time. Again I called. I opted to change the trip after a few hours of cancelling, since again, I was only offered a voucher for part of the trip and cash refund for the other. This was all so confusing as I opted for the cash insurance the 2nd time. We did recieve the passport and went on our trip. The hotel was beautiful. Pools pristine. Food was good, except American night which they missed the boat on that one. Room was spacious but a bit bare, no problem. Clean. Did not like that we could not sit on the balcony as the neighbor was out there continually smoking. When we arrived at the hotel, a concierge sat us down to map out the hotel, etc and offer coupons. Then he went into a selling speech about how we could get couples massages, etc. if we came to a forum discussing the hotels and booking trips with them. We declined. That was fine but wasn't expecting to be asked about paying into future trips when we just arrived and it was our first trip to Mexico. I feel like this conciere then had us pegged as it is. I later saw him in the lobby and asked if I could use my coupon to schedule a massage. He got on the phone, booked me for 10 am on a Wed. I showed up at 945 AM and the spa said they ahd expected me at 930, so could not see me, BUT they could offer me a dsicount on a full price massage at 11 AM and give me a manicure free. I felt very "Taken" and embarrassed and ended up taking the deal but knew for sure I had booked at 10 AM. I felt like possibly the conciere had fooled m esince we had not accepted his hotel talk. Still, the massage was great. We were not expecting the beach water to be cloudy and brown and have a foot of seaweed on the beach. That was disappointing, so we hung out at the pools most of the time. We booked an excursion to Chit en Itza and the cenotes. The trip was great but extremely hot. We enjoyed our tour guides but had not planned for tip money well. We didnt realize we would need to pay for extra drinks at lunch or a locker at the cenotes so having brought minimal cash.

This property is really beautiful and the staff are amazing - courteous and always willing to assist. There was an overabundance of seaweed on the beach (no fault of anyone but Mother Nature!), the first I've ever experienced in my 35 years of vacationing in Cancun. That was disappointing for friends travelling with us who really wanted to see that turquoise water. But the cleanliness of the property and courteous hotel staff made the trip enjoyable. The pool areas were clean and refreshing, which is where we spent the majority of every day. Can't wait to return :)

We went here on our honeymoon. The only issue we had was the beach by the water was covered in sea weeds, they tried to clean it up but it was too much. I heard this was probably from the bad storms that went through a few months ago so it should be better soon. This was the only negative we had the staff was alway great to deal with. Even on the beach a server would come by fairly regularly to ask if we needed a drink. The main dining area was very nice and they changed up the type of food daily, also very good breakfast choices as well. The best place for the quick bite for lunch was over at the snack shack which was away from the swim up bar so much quieter. We didnt go on any excursions just stayed at the resort and layed in the shade on the beach then by the pool till dinner.

We have been to Mexico several times and we stay somewhere different each time, but we always use Apple vacations. Even though the hotel is older, it is very clean and well taken care of, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. The food and desserts at specialty restaurants was better than any other place we have stayed. Roberto in the breakfast and lunch buffets was awesome! He always took great care of us and always had a smile! We would loved our vacation and definitely would go back.

The hotel grounds were very well kept. The food was decent. Services was very good, especially Yamima at the quiet pool. The beach had a lot of seaweed but they tried to keep up on it. Overall we had a great time at Ocean Coral and Turquesa.

Terrible Hotel and Beach
DAVID C.
Apr 18 2018
This Hotel should be rated 2 stars at best. I paid for privilege status and the only thing that got us was towels that said privilege. The restaurants are all booked up and you must make reservations for the whole week in order to get a decent dinner time. The beach was the worst I've ever been too. The beach was not maintained had seaweed so high and along the beach that you could not get into the water and in the water was the same thing. I've never been told no at a resort so much as this Hotel. And on the first day actually looked at leaving the Hotel forsomething else. Theentertainment was only a few signers which were locals and no real shows to speak of. I have never wanted to go home so quickly as this place made me want too. And not enough room at the pools for all guest so if you don't wake up at 4 am and place a towel where you would like to sit then dont expect to enjoy a day by the pool. Overall listen to my words....go elsewhere a motel 6 in Chicago perhaps that would be nicer.

Amazing that a five star, hah, hotel can’t even get the air conditioning right. I am in the presidential fancy hotel and roasting to death. I had a better experience in the 15 dollar hotel in downtown Phnom Penh last week. At least when a concern was brought up they gave a damn and had it fixed. The dehumidifier is supposed to make it comfortable but only makes the room hotter. Hey. I have a time share here and they didn’t even get it fixed. Imagine if you were a regular old pre time share customer

Seaweed Didn’t Ruin our Vacation!

So, the sargassum is an issue but the resort and all it’s wonderful staff made up for the lack of beach going. Especially, Jose Luis Cen, our beach concierge. Luis made sure that we had a cabana for shade and pool chairs with an umbrella every day. He helped us organize an excursion to go snorkeling (which was a steal!). He was our go to guy for everything and he took such great care of us during our entire stay! We actually enjoyed the food and our stay so much that we have already made plans to return in March! This was our sixth time coming to Riviera Maya (different resorts each time) and by far, the best service and food we have experienced!

Great hotel... but the seaweed!

We (couple with two – 14 and 17 – kids) have just came back from Riveira Maya and it is not easy to make a review since holidays ware really great but for one thing… however that thing was the main reason for us to go to Riveira Maya: the beach and the turquoise ocean. We arrived late in the night and were surprised at reception because for the first night they only have one room available for us four when we have booked two rooms. However, they proposed us a compensation package that included a (Privilege) Master room, that was enough to accommodate all of us and that we would keep the room for the entire stay (even after my kids move to their room the next day). The also offered us Privilege status (for the entire stay) for free. We were aware of the Privilege status and because we thought they would press us to upgrade at check-in, we have decided beforehand that the cost (USD 35 a night per person) was too high to compensate the benefits… but for free, obviously we would try. We accept the deal and, in the end, although they messed up with our reservation for the first night they did a great job compensating us. I was even able to get a (free) late check-out (until 15.00) as in last day we were just picked in our hotel at 17.00. I really appreciate Jahir effort to compensate us for the first night trouble. The hotel is great. They have four swimming pools. From left to right (facing the see), the one on the left was the smallest one and was mainly occupied by couples with small kids as there was also a toddler swimming pool and a kids’ club there. The next one, was the largest one and we call it the “sport pool” as people there play water pool (at designated hours), water volleyball and other sports. The third was the “American pool” (as we call it) with a swimming pool bar. This swimming pool has a constant party environment with very loud music (that, I don’t know how, was not heard in other hotel areas). The last one was the “Privilege” swimming pool and for us was the best swimming pool (although we clearly understood that all swimming pools are their specific public, which is really great) as was very large and quiet which allowed to spend a lot of time relaxing by the pool and spent a lot of time in the swimming pool without knocking other persons. Although this swimming pool was reserved for Privilege clients, more than 2/3 of persons there were not Privilege and no one care (as we have not bought the Privilege status but was offered to us, were not picky about that but if we had paid $35 a night per person for the Privilege status we would be very upset). In all swimming pools the places were fully “reserved” by towels by 7.30 in morning. The restaurants were good. At lunch we tried both buffet restaurants and although they were not expectational, you could have a proper meal in both of them. At dinner we have tried both Italians restaurants and both were really great. We tried the “Route 66” for two late dinners (on the arriving day and another day we went on a tour) and although was not as good as the others you can have a good (BBQ) meal there. The best dinner however was in the “Privilege” restaurant and that was one of the few things that we benefit from our Privilege status. Regarding Privilege status was exactly what we were expecting, it is good, but it is not worth USD 35 a night per person. Moreover, although we were given a “Privilege” room, contrary to the majority of Privilege rooms, our room was not in “Privilege” area, worse it was the room furthest away from that area. To reach the “Privilege” area (swimming pool, reception and restaurant) we have to cross the entire resort and it would take almost 10 minutes to do it. I believe the “Privilege” rooms where we have stayed were used for free upgrades as, once again, I would be very upset if we had paid $35 a night per person for the Privilege status and ended up in that area. One good thing about our room location was that it was right in front of the tennis and basketball courts (and my kids play basketball and so they ended using the basketball court several times). The other benefit we gathered from the Privilege status is the possibility of booking a restaurant, but you must do it until 4pm which we forgot several times and so we have just used this benefit three times and in one of the occasions we have not booked we have to wait one hour for a table in one of the Italians restaurants. The hotel also has a small but very nice gym, that we hit almost every day. So, the resort was very good. We really love it, but… But, then the seaweed! It was horrible. It was completely impossible to swim and very disgusting to just lay on the beach. The hotel was doing everything possible to get rid of the seaweed (in some days two tractors working all day to take the seaweed out of the beach), but they were not able to cope with Mother Nature and everyday more and more seaweed arrived to beach. We were in the Caribbean and we were just able to swim in the ocean just one time during an entire week and for that we need to take a tour to Isla Mujeres! Had we known beforehand and obviously we have cancelled our holiday. It is strange how this problem is being kept somehow under radar. It is true that now as you know the problem exist if you look in Internet it looks very strange how you missed it, but I have talked with my travel agent after I come back and he told me that he has never heard before about it… But in my opinion if Cancun and Riviera Maya don’t solve this problem in a short period of time they will have a serious problem as more persons in the world will be aware of this.

Accommodating staff, excellent food and service and good kids program

My wife and I have been very impressed so far. We were given a microwave for our room to sterilize baby bottles. Kids program led by Cindy has been very nice. Food is excellent. I would like as well to recommend Mr. Miguel Simoneen who was friendly and did his best for us at the Casa del Mar restaurant.
