Beautiful Resort

I stayed at Occidental Papagayo from Dec 1st through Dec 6th 2018. This resort has many positives and also some areas that need some improvement. This review is based on the intention that I wouldn’t be on the resort often and I’d be spending 2, mostly full days, out of the resort and 2 full days at the resort. We were picked up at Liberia airport by a shuttle service we booked on our own. We read the ride would likely be bumpy, but it wasn’t. It took about 30 minutes to get to the resort and the roads from the airport to the resort were newly paved. In fact, that was mostly the case for our excursions 1-3 hours from the resort. If you’re considering renting a car I will say I would probably do it if/when I return. The check-in process was a breeze. We quickly got our towel cards, got informed about the included amenities and the ones that were an extra charge (Occidental should definitely reconsider charging for WiFi. I saw smaller, less impressive resorts provide FREE wifi). I’ll add, WiFi was NOT a big deal to us. We come on vacation to truly get away, but WiFi was necessary to get in contact with our shuttle service and excursion contacts. Once checked in we hitched an on-the-ground shuttle to our room. We quickly realized the resort was small, but extremely hilly. We didn’t mind it and walked the entire time, but if you’re handicapped, have a hard time walking, or want a more leisurely stroll around the resort you may want to consider another resort. Shuttle service was always available and when we checked out we used it. It took less than 60 seconds for them to get to our building located the farthest from the lobby area. I am not docking any points for their campus. It’s built in the forest, essentially. We looked at enough reviews to know this beforehand and it didn’t bother us one bit. With that said, the grounds are BEAUTIFUL. The staff is attentive and keeps it clean. You’ll be treated with amazing sunrises and sunsets. Check out the sunset by the beach! Speaking of the beach, you’ll likely meet Roberto there. He can set you up with excursions, customize them if you have a preference, and save you some money. We did two with his company and enjoyed both! Once at the room we walked in and didn’t like how poorly lit the room was. It was spacious and clean. We left one of our cards in the slot the entire time as it’s needed to have the AC running. You certainly didn’t want to come back from an all day excursion to a warm, sometimes humid, room. The safe worked from the start for us though it took reading the instructions a couple of times. My advice is to test it out and get familiar with it before you put any of your belongings in and lock it. I was told it can take up to 45 minutes to have someone unlock it for you if you lock yourself out of it. Where I’m docking points, though I have a hard time doing so under the circumstances, was the spider situation. As I mentioned before we knew there would be some bugs around the resort since it is smack in the middle of a forest. It’s hot, and there’s lots of vegetation. If you’re coming to Costa Rica just be aware you’ll encounter a bug or two. That was my expectation. Unfortunately, for my gf and I, we had a ground floor room which gave bugs open access to our room. We killed many spiders while in the room. They look like crabs almost, but they’re definitely spiders, lol. From my 5-6 day stay here I noticed them coming in from under the door. I get it’s hard to do anything about it since we (humans) are encroaching on nature, but no one wants to go on vacation and be on alert the entire time. My advice is to request a room on the second floor to avoid bugs. The food was alright. Funny enough, the snack bar food was our favorite. The fried chicken is AMAZING. The entertainment was non existent. They had a schedule of events, but none of the scheduled activities took place. It’s a good resort to come and relax at. Music by the larger pool is just a mix of YouTube videos. It’s nice background music, but not lively by any means. We are 25-30 years old and definitely wanted a little more “party”. The disco was less than eventful. The average age is probably 10-15 years older than we were. Long story short, Occidental Papagayo is a nice resort with easy access to the beach. Our intention was to enjoy Costa Rica with the resort not being our number 1 priority. For us, this resort gets a 3.5/5 stars. If you could work on your entertainment and provide more of it by the larger pool I think that review could increase to a 4/5. Thank you to the attentive staff for a pleasurable stay. Pura Vida!

Great trip, great food, very friendly staff. Grounds very well kept, requests granted in decent time. Was a little worried about all the steps and hills, due to husbands recent knee replacement, but shuttle service was excellent and 24 hours a day. Overall great experience.

Clean and friendly

The Occidental was a perfect place for adults. It was slower this time of year but I didn't mind having pool chairs always available. Pools were clean. Grounds were amazing. Staff was incredible. I travelled solo and found everyone helpful. The room I had was extra king-size with a patio and view of ocean. The fridge always had water and pop. But beer had to be asked for after 1st day. My safe never did work and wasn't fixed even after I went to the front desk. I just kept my wallet and passport with me. The sheets were clean and crisp the bed was very comfortable. Buffets were normal. You had your salad fruit desserts and then meat beans rice. Snack bar was Good. Only had breakfast once and it was good. Did the Grill restaurant and was blown away with the tuna. I had already heard about the oriental and avoided it. Italian was divine. The lobby bar I only experienced twice the bartenders were very attentive. Wildlife for me was a couple iguanas, raccoons ( keep your room doors closed. People were ransacked)and the pungent smell of skunk. I could hear the howler monkeys but sadly I never did see them. Although others saw them. I went to the spa 3 times. The volcanic mud wrap with massage was heaven. They were very professional. I did hear you could get a massage on the beach for $40. Wanted a clean environment so I prefered the spa. The gift shop is quite expensive but if you are craving those Doritos expect to pay $10. Everything is in US dollars ( not sure why) of course you can use colones. After many trips to Mexico and Carribean I now would not hesitate to go to Costa Rica instead. It's clean economically sound and safe. This resort has everything you need. If the safe is very important to you I would just keep going to front desk. I'm sure they would get it fixed fast The airport is nice. Very very expensive. I needed coffee and regular was $5 US. They kind of trap you with cost. Glad I bought airplane munchies at supermarket few days before.

Nice resort but small changes could make it better

The resort was good overall. This was my second visit. Last one was about 10 years ago. Plenty to do or not do. Absolutely beautiful and the staff is super friendly. Couple things to note. 1) wifi is not included unlike every other hotel i have stayed in. So surprising for an all inclusive resort. Also the service was pretty stable in the room but spotty at best everywhere on the property in case you plan to rely on wifi for communication back home 2). Restaurants were what you would expect. Get a few dishes really well and the rest mediocre. This included the oriental specialy restaurant. Mexican night was particularly good in the buffet restaurant and love the morning omelets. Loved that they had fresh salad and fruit available at every meal outside the specialty restaurants. 3) coffee. For those of us that don’t really eat breakfast every day or want that second cup at 9 it would be nice if the had a coffee set up somewhere- even in the lobby. If it was available outside getting served in the buffet restaurant I couldn’t find it. 4) day trips - lots to choose from unless you are travelling alone. Need to piggyback on another group or pay double. I considered one of the trips being offered on the beach before heeding the hotels warning. Was put off when they said they pick you up outside the hotel security gate. 5) boats and beach are great but unexpected rough water can limit use ( i never swam and couldn’t boat at least 1 days). There are 2 SUPs and a bunch of kayaks. Staff there was very nice and helpful. 6). Music at the pool was good and had a variety but too loud when there weren’t actual activities going on and was distracting for those just wanting quiet and to read/relax. Would think they should consider turning it down to background music when activities not in progress particularly in the morning. 7) hammocks- there were hammocks on the property scattered around that i loved to seek out and read/nap last time I visited but were gone this time. I hope they bring them back 8) lots of walking / hills. They have carts to pick you up but I preferred to walk and get the extra exercise. There are a bunch of stairs to get to the beach. Just be mindful if you aren’t very mobile. 9) generally i felt very safe on the resort but a couple time on the beach when making small talk the boat staff and tour operators asked what building or room i was in and asked if i was traveling alone. I am sure this was all just harmless banter as i came home without incident but it did make me uncomfortable. Coming from NY my wheels were turning. My deadbolt not locking right didnt help. I managed to fix it myself when maintenance didn’t show up after I reported it. All in all a good trip and resort but think there are some simple improvements they can make to make it more enjoyable (better and included wifi, lower volume on music at the pool outside of activities particularly in the mornings, self serve coffee station in the morning, bring back the hammocks.)

Would NOT recommend!

So many issues and poor service. It’s an all-inclusive but they wanted to restrict everything. Can’t take food to go even if you have a tour to go to in the morning. Bar tender made a huge fuss when we asked for 2 glasses of wine each to return to our room for a quiet evening. They never stocked our fridge. Had to pay for wifi and could only use it in room and lobby... which stills barely ever worked! Staff were not willing to please/help with anything! Ran out of towels at the pool. The food wasn’t very good. Heard “no” way too many times for the money we paid! Guests were complaining left and right. The only good part were the monkeys we saw in the trees. Costa Rica itself is beautiful. We traveled on our own for a week and all of our experiences were great until we got to the Occidental. Would not recommend this place and would suggest traveling the country and staying at air bnbs along the way.
