Excellent with upgrade

We would probably not come back to the resort without the upgrade. Although we like the small size of it.

Not completely happy

Did not like the two beds they pushed together to make one. Maid service to clean room was too late in the day - not until 4 -4:30 pm

Following the shade.

No thatched umbrellas on the beach, as advertised. We were constantly moving our chairs following the shade. Won't be back.

VERY disappointed to not have hot tub or WIFI! That made my stay miserable when it had been part of original package!

Relaxing Vacation
Feb 05 2017
The Occidental Nueva was very nice. If you have a problem with stairs, you could have a problem here. The resort has stairs, stairs and more stairs. Small runs of 2-5 stairs but most without railings! That was truly the problem. No railings. Even getting into the main pool. But the service was great everywhere. Great staff! Great rooms. Nice amenities. Plus they are doing a pretty good job of being eco. Lovely grounds and close to a mall so if you want leave the resort for a Starbucks coffee or food, the mall is withing walking distance (5 minutes).

Royal is not Royal...but amazing staff
Jan 19 2017
First let me say that there are no bathtubs in the rooms. There are no balconies in the rooms. When you look at pictures online, know that you may be looking at rooms available only to those who are timeshare vacationers. With the Royal level, you don't get a bathtub, you don't get a balcony and in less you specifically pay for a Oceanview, you'll get a very tiny window. The rooms are in need of update. The lighting in the bathroom is very poor, and the lighted mirrors do not work. If you asked to have it fixed, they will tell you that they cannot be fixed. The food in the Royal club is very good when the regular chef is there. If not, they run out of things and the food is subpar. The food in the buffet is what you would expect of a buffet, but the options are very limited . We enjoyed the Italian restaurant, but remember you are in Mexico. The Mexican restaurant was wonderful at lunch, we did not try the dinner. Back to the Royal issue, with the Royal club you get access to the beach beds. But the beds are not well-maintained. We had to asked to have sheets put on the beds, the tables at the Royal club area were never washed. While there is bar service at the beach area, it seems a lot faster at the non-Royal part of the beach. But what makes the Royal club the best, are the people. Because they are typically timeshare guests they are amazingly friendly and warm. They make it well worth the extra cost. While the turndown service that comes with the Royal level had to be asked for every single night, it was excellent. The room were cleaned nicely. The pool for Royal guests was fantastic....never crowded. The bars at the Royal Club and the Royal Pool were lots of fun. Most amazing was the staff! They were incredibly responsive, helpful and kind. The location is PERFECT! THE BEACH IS FANTASTIC! FELLOW GUESTS WERE THE FRIENDLIEST WE HAVE EVER MET! Stay here, upgrade to Royal...but understand it is not 5 star...but worth every penny!

The swimming pool small and crowded. Too heavy food (everything with a lot of sauce and oil) and nothing simple grilled.

This was a last-minute booking but we could not have asked for a better vacation. This was our first experience with an all-inclusive and we were impressed with the quality and variety of food and drinks. The staff was lovely and the nightly shows were an added bonus. It was like a cruise on land, but you are not trapped! It was a small intimate Hotel perfect for a restful getaway. It was 3 days before we left the hotel! We met wonderful memories here. For families with small children the Kids Club is an added bonus!

Pleasantly surprised

We were a tentative about travel to Mexico, however we were pleasantly surprised. We got a great last minute deal on our trip to the Occidental Nuevo Vallarta. We were the only two guests on the plane that were going to this hotel, so check in was fast and easy. Our room was ready so we went right up. Our suitcases were delivered to our room very shortly after check in. They called to ensure we were in our room and brought our bags right up. We had requested a King sized bed and a non-smoking room, both requests were fulfilled and the room was quite nice. Lots of room for our clothes and things. I particularly liked the storage in the bathroom. We had a mini-fridge which was sporadically refreshed. The cleaning staff did a great job - the room was spotless. The hotel has a 'green policy' with regards to towels, sheets etc. but the staff doesn't seem to know that. They changed our towels every day even when we hung them up, indicating we would re-use them. They would also take the facecloths every day and we would have to ask for fresh ones, or go without. If there are not enough facecloths to refresh each room when required, perhaps it's time to purchase a few more. This is a small issue, but it did annoy me. Overall the room was very well appointed, clean and comfortable. The bed was a bit firm for our taste, but that is personal preference. We found that the staff all worked very hard and were more than willing to go out of their way to ensure the guests were happy - however in reading the other reviews, some people will never be happy. We could not believe that people complained about the staff. If the service by the staff was slow sometimes, it is because they were understaffed. The young lady who works in the lobby bar 6 out of 7 nights a week, serves the whole area by herself...she runs the entire night and could use some help, as could the bartender. She was always pleasant no matter how miserable some people were and she never stopped or took a break - and she always got the order right! The staff in the main buffet are also very hard working and don't stop - of particular notice to us was Erik. He welcomed us each morning with a smile and ensured we were seated quickly and that our coffee cups and water glasses were never empty. The entire staff in the main buffet are always busy - clearing tables, setting up, filling glasses, getting drinks etc. The Mexican lunch buffet staff were not bad, but not as good as the main buffet staff. They often walked by and did not pick up the used dishes. People would be coming in and there would be lots of empty tables, but they were not cleared so people had to wait. We saw a few 'discussions' between the hostess and the staff about this. The Italian restaurant was the only a la carte that we attended as we were unable to get a reservation at the Japanese restaurant for the Teppanyaki. If you want that, ensure that you tell them - otherwise you'll be reserved for the sushi restaurant. We went to the Italian restaurant twice. Both times the food was excellent - particularly the salmon. The service was also excellent. The first time we went there there was a party group who were quite loud and kind of ruined the ambience. Not the fault of the restaurant - the manager even apologized for the noise. The second visit was much quieter except for the dishes being crashed about in the kitchen. If you go, perhaps request a table near the front of the restaurant, not the back. It's quieter at the front. The beach was gorgeous and we were lucky enough to see whales, dolphins and even a nest of baby sea turtles hatching!! The pool was enjoyable although not heated as advertised. It was certainly refreshing :) Music could be loud, but if so, we just moved to the beach. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.

One of my fav in the PV area.

I have stayed at a Riu in NV and this resort and I think the only thing better about the Riu was a larger food selection but that is also because the hotel has more guests/rooms! So, this is a great option and is across the street from the Paradise Village Mall so there are things to do and food to eat there. Cab to PV is about $200 pesos, cab to Buscerias $150 ish? The (First Club) rooms were ground level and very quiet with friendly staff. We found the mattresses to be harder than most beds. Service: some staff were friendlier than others, some definitely stood out. Cleanliness: no complaints Value: that's subjective. They have great food selections Location: Close to a mall, farther from PV... so that depends on what your interests are. Sleep quality: quiet rooms but the beds were quite firm. We weren't bothered enough to ask for a foam topper (if they have any). Rooms: QUIET... need I say more? ha ha

We miss everyone at Occidental Nuevo Vallarta. It was a great trip and Agustin Loeza, Julio Larios, and Guadalupe Salazar made it even better! You will not be disappointed with the service and hotel amenities. We can't wait to come back and visit.

Just finishing a week at The Occidental Nuevo Vallarta... Smaller property...with smaller rooms than some others and not much in the room in the way of eye candy...but very clean and comfortable... although our A/C ran full blast when it was on with difference when you tried to adjust temperatures...so when we got cold enough we shut it off... Shower pressure and temperature was very consistent and very nice. Nice pools, great beach area... relaxing week. Grounds are well kept. Restaurants have a nice variety of options. in the dinner specialty restaurants they control the volume of the number of people who can make a reservation... which at times seemed weird to us... the restaurants were never near capacity. The food was for the most part very good. The nightly shows were pretty good. The Michael Jackson show was very good. The bar staff and the DJ at the pool were very good...special thanks to Manuel at the pool bar for making us feel so welcome from day one. We had a very nice stay for a week!!
