Beautiful Resort

Just got back from my recent stay at the Occidental Grand Xcaret..the resort is stunning and truly breathtaking. I went with an open mind having no idea what to expect. The staff are friendly and welcoming, certainly more than willing to help with anything that you need. I have to stay that if you are a young little group of girls (2x 21 and 1x 20 year old) i wouldn't recommend here as the resort it filled with families and coupled. Minus that it was lovely, we went out to Playa del Carmen which is definitely for our age. Our room was cleaned daily by Edwin, who did very well considering our room looked like a bomb hit it after getting ready each night. We were in block 21, although it may look far from the lobby it is in the middle of the resort in regards to lobby, restaurants and beach. The buffets were quite good with the variety of food, it is a bit repetitive after a while for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is different as you have the A La Carte restaurants...personal favourite was The Grill. There is a show in the evenings and then there is a disco for 18 and over from about 10:30 until 2am. The whole resort has a jungle like feel to it with all the trees and animals around you. You will be laying round the pool and there will suddenly be a monkey swinging above you, different to say the least. I would recommend going here with your boyfriend/girlfriend/family, as this is definitely what the hotel is aimed at. More>

We visited The Occidental on the 14th June this year, and this being our 4th time to Mexico we had high hopes for a great holiday as always. We travelled with Virgin holidays, and upgraded to Royal club before we went. Other reviews were 50/50 about the hotel so we thought it was a safe bet to upgrade as most people seemed very impressed by the Royal club. Unfortunately we didn't get to see any of it as I shall explain. On arrival there was no warm welcome with a drink as we had experienced else where. We were only told by a staff member standing by the front porch to head down a path. We had absolutely no idea where we were going. Since it was pitch black too, we were left following other guests who were also confused as to where their rooms were. Having a baby in a buggy we were furious. We were tired and just wanted rest. Finally, we found our block, only to discover Virgin had mucked up and put us in a standard room (not the hotels fault I will add) and we were not staying in the Royal club at all. By this point we just wanted to sleep and decided to sort it out in the morning. Fortunately we managed to change hotels after several days of Virgin going back and forth with head office. On the four days we stayed pros are: - lots of shade for young children as there are many trees - wildlife is lovely to see, really makes you feel like you are in a jungle! - very close to xcaret if that's what you want to visit - beautifully kept grounds for exploring. - Beach is shallow for young kids. Cons: -The food is hit and miss. Some restaurants good, some awful. - The rooms smell of damp. - Mosquitos will eat you alive here( can't be helped, it's a jungle after all!) - The Vegetation from the trees gets everywhere in all your stuff. - The rooms desperately need an uplift. They are very dark and dingy. - There is a hell of a lot of walking as the resort is so big, so if it's raining and you need dinner, you will just have to get soaked! (Yes, even with a brolly!) - No room service at all. -The music at night is blaring. So loud we didn't bother watching any of the shows. It was louder than a rock concert every single night. - Time share staff hounding you every time you leave the room. We just used to run away from them in the end. Over all I wouldn't stay here again. The staff seem a little sad compared to other resorts I have been to. Maybe they don't treat their staff well? Or pay them enough? Who knows, but the atmosphere is not one I want to pay to experience again. If I could give you any advice- skip this hotel and find a better one! More>

Wonderful experience From the warm welcome upon arrival and refreshing drink the holiday proper starts. If you want to find something to complain about … there are lots of things but you would have to look for them. Honestly it is an amazing place. I will start with the rooms; use Tripadvisor to find the type of block you would like to be in or get in touch with Diandra Cru, customer care in the hotel she is a great help … there are options so you are near a lively pool or a quite one, nearer the sea or the main lobby and restaurants. The resort is big but there is a bus & quick routes so you are never more than 12 minutes from anywhere. The rooms are good, big with aircon that works and a fan. Plenty of storage space with facilities like an iron, hairdryer, and umbrella for those little downpours. Fridge with a nice selection of drinks and what I appreciated most was the fantastic coffee … My thanks to Rose for the supply. I would bring bug spray for the room and yourself, if you don’t need it fine but just in case … some rooms can get a few mosquitoes. Food – buckets of places to eat, Breakfast in the main hotel or down by the beach, opens at 7am for the early birds and stays serving till 11am for the late comers meals cover all you could want and more with freshly made eggs however you want them served bacon, sausages ++ to pancakes, salamis / ham and cheeses, it goes on and on. Lunch – Beach, main hotel or above the swim up bar. Huge selection of hot plates, fish, salads, hams & cheeses. The kids are well looked after with burgers, nuggets – fish and chicken and chips and lots of pasta choices. If I even gave a brief summary on dinner I would need four foolscap pages – Roughly there are 4 al la carte – Mexico (I though this was the least interesting and no air con) advantage you do not have to follow the clothing requirements needed for the other al la cartes of Trousers and closed shoes for men. Italian bellissimo!! you have to try the mushroom risotto with shrimp it is out of this world. Fish restaurant down by the beach .. wow the surf and turf fantastic and what amazing views. Oriental, very enjoyable and nice buffet choice of starter. No pre booking … if you go early no wait time alternatively you get a buzzer and they give you an approximate wait time – really efficient. Service is great, wine varies in each. I can not say I eat a bad meal all holiday and the dinners and some lunches were outstanding. One Really clever idea is lunch and dinner they have a whipped ice cream machine and cones so you can help yourself, even had a Nutella flavour according to my daughter. Pools – fantastic and something to meet every need, loud music, quite pool, basket ball, volley ball, aqua aerobics, pool games, swim up bar, bubble pools, pools you can put you sun bed into, safe pools for kids – all catered for. Beach, yes it is small but plenty of room and the fish are amazing, very safe to swim / snorkel in. Free snorkel equipment for one hour a day. One of the entrances into Xcaret is directly from the beach. The adult pool is an experience unbelievable views and the fish in the pool … you will just have to try it. Drinks are fantastic and the barmen almost challenge you to find something new for them to make .. great fun. I could not do justice in this review to all the places you can visit but … Xcarret is a must, I would recommend a minimum of two days – with MasterCard booking second day is free. You have to do the water treks .. there are 3, in my order of preference Mayan river, Manatees, then caves… but try and do them all, you could do about two in one day, there is a current to help you. The trip takes about 1 hour per swim. You collect a life vest and put all your belongings in a bag which you lock & take the key – they delivery the bag to the end of the river swim. If you tire easily rent flippers which will make the swim easier but it is not difficult and in many places you can stand. You can keep you glasses on but you can not take a camera or phone unless it is in a waterproof pouch. I only used US Dollars and never changed any money. Good to have small currency for tips. Hope this has helped your decision to go to this wonderful resort … and no I am not on retainer!! (Unfortunately) More>

Cannot describe how fab this place is. Its not really as big as others have mentioned, we flew with Virgin and were in block 22 furthest from lobby apart from RC and we were about 5 mins from beach and less than 10 from lobby. It is big enough however to not feel crowded and this is thanks to the many pools and the beach. Beach is small but large enough again not to feel crowded. As a virgin holiday flyer, cannot fault the service whatsoever. Grant, the rep was always on hand and very helpful. I would recommend booking excursions through them as all had special touches like being the first in parks or t-shirts and bits for the kids. The excursion guides were also very helpful and on Virgin Ahoy, Linda is an absolute star. People have complained about the food. No issues we noted. There was lots of variety in the buffet and others like pizza and taco bar great. Steak house in our opinion was the best and we ate there mostly. Dress code could be changed a bit to incorporate smart shorts perhaps. Beach buffet for breakfast and lunch was far better than lobby in our opinion. Less busy and hence staff could give a bit more attention. Lobby buffet and bar was a little short staffed. Staff were always polite and hardworking. Willian at the beach breakfast buffet always started our day off with a smile as was very attentive and played lots of attention to my kids which they loved. Alfredo at the pool bar (close to block 22) was great and kept us well lubricated with cocktails. Salvador at the theatre bar was also fab, always had a smile on his face and generally had your drink ready as he saw you coming. Thanks guys. Those cleaning the rooms, pools and the complex worked so hard and were always so friendly. Kids club ladies were brilliant, my boys loved spending time with them and were reluctant to leave when being collected early. The evening kids show, they loved also. The evening entertainment was a little similar most evenings and would have been better if it was more interactive with the audience but it was good none the less. Lots of wildlife and much to ours kids delight, we saw a couple of snakes. A little daunting initially but staff were immediately on hand to reassure that they were not harmful, left alone, they go on their merry way. Snorkel at the beach and you will be amazed. I would advise to bring plenty of mossi spray and we found 30% deet was suffice but we ran out and got the local stuff and were hit bad. I would advice to have it with you from early afternoon as dependent on the weather, the little buggers can wake early. Couple of negative experiences but none that would warrant mentioning. We are hoping to return next year, book and enjoy. More>
