Ho Hummmm

We consider ourselves to be rather experienced and seasoned travelers. We stayed at this resort as their "First Club" members and expected an upscale experience. What we got was a ho humm stay and some very poor food and entertainment. Our room was a mini suite located on the first floor. Besides the numerous insects in our room we were also flooded out after a BRIEF rain. Hotel staff did very little to help us move to another room!!! The main buffet offered ho humm food in an area with no a/c. Bugs abounded. The specialty restaurants cost too much and we found the Italian venue entrees so poor. The spaghetti was cold and not cooked thoroughly The sauce seemed like ketchup. The pool was large and well maintained. The beach was small but filled with sand bugs and cigarette butts. Vendors next door were also annoying. The FIRST CLUB area was small and nothing special. Although they said the liquor was "top Shelf", I wonder???? There is nothing nearby worth tripping to. The resort is at best average. Best to go as a regular guest instead of FIRST CLUB and save your time elsewhere. More>

I was not sure how this trip would go knowing the resort is under renovations, my first time taking my kids out of the country and being without my son as he passed in December of 2015. The staff including the grounds crew really stepped it up and helped make our stay very memorable. I thank you all so much for helping my wife and two daughters really enjoy themselves. The only reason I did not max out the rating is because the Royal area has not been updated yet but was still really good. This is my 3rd time at this resort and simply love the location. I like being able to walk to town and mingle with the locals. The royal beach bar and staff were awesome, the royal restaurant were good too and even though I would get full I still saved room for the night time calzones and the chef there was also very good. Even the grounds crew workers pitched in to help our enjoyment with the coconuts. Again thank you everyone and cant wait to see the upgrades More>

week before closing*** terrible service****

OUR stay at the Occidental Grand Punta Cana for the week of August 27th - September 3rd 2016. Upon booking my trip i had paid for an upgraded room with a safe and access to a private section of the beach, i had requested early check in and late check out, two double beds, and repeat guest. After arriving at the hotel i was put into a regular room with one bed, a broken toilet, a dirty shower with footprints in it, a broken washroom door, and stained bedsheets (Which i do have pictures of), no safe after calling down to the front desk and complaining 3 people were sent to my room- a supervisor a trolley driver, and a maid- they had all insisted they saw no problems with the room, also advising i would have to pay $5 US a night if i wanted a safe after a short but stressful conversation they had agreed to give me the proper room i had paid for the following day no later than 12pm. Sunday August 28th at 12:50pm i had went to the front desk to get my room switched and was told i had to wait until 2pm, after being extremely furious for having to waste yet another day i had waited until 2pm to get my new room. After being in the new room for no more than 30 minutes i heard the room door open and a couple had walked in, explaining that this was the room they were assigned, i had called the front desk to ask what was going on and was passed around to 4 people and was hung up on and told i would be called back in 10 minutes. After 25 minutes i got a call saying the alcohol and fruit they had left in the room they were coming to pick it up because it was for the other couple who abruptly walked into my room, after explaining that that is not acceptable i was hung up on yet again. i had spent the remainder of the day at the beach and upon returning my room key did not work because it was assigned to someone else. The following day there were two power outages which led to the room yet yet again not working. and the following morning i was ever so kindly woken out of my sleep at 7:45 am by a maid standing in my room explaining she wanted to clean the room even though there had been a do not disturb sign on the door this continued every day (they would take the sign off and slide it under the door and proceed to walk in). when they did "clean" the room they had put dirty sheets on the bed and did not restock the fridge which later became an issue because the following day after spending the night sick because of dehydration i had attempted to use the "private bar" (that i was told i was entitled too) to ask for water on a day that was over 35 degrees i was told i had to walk to the beach buffet which was a 10 minute walk if i wanted water because my wristband indicates i can not use that bar for anything because it was as luxury bar and apparently water is as luxury? After an extensive argument with the front desk i was told to bring the water from my fridge which i didnt have because it was never restocked. the remaining days of my trip there was a ton of construction making the stay loud and annoying. i was also told i could pay for my excursions in canadian dollars once getting to the desk i was told i can not pay in canadian dollars (which in the past has never been an issue) and was sent to the hotel currency exchange i was told my $80 dollar excursion would cost me $152 dollars to get american. Our sales rep for Air Transat was totally unprofessional and had given us his phone number and kept sending us voice notes calling us princesses and would not report our problems during our stay because we did not go out to the club with him and failed to report things to him (when we went 3 different times to report it to him he was not in the office when he was supposed to be and his excuse is that we should have texted him) all of the workers at this hotel were very pushy and full of harassment our entire stay. there were only 4 out of the 6 al la cart restaurants open the lunch buffet was closed everyday. as well as there were not shows every night as they were supposed to be. this was the worst vacation and the most stressful stay of my entire life More>

Arrived yesterday to find out today the hotel is closing on Sunday and we are all being transferred to different hotels. Extremely annoyed that this wasn't told before the booking as I bought Internet to find out I can only use it for 3 days!!!!!! More>

This first time my wife and I vacationed in Punta Cana, we left with an A+ diamond platinum impression from our stay a Barcelo Palace Deluxe; and we recommend that this is where you stay as well. However, our second visit to Punta Cana was at the Occidental Grand. Since we were taking the kids this time around, we figure the Occidental would be more kid friendly (less nudity on the beach, and or more kid friendly beach/resort activities). While the kids really enjoyed themselves, I would not recommend Occidental for couples. The upgrade to the VIP sections was not worth the price or worth being considered VIP: There is no pool bar in the VIP section. The buffets lack variety. I was looking forward to Dominican cuisine, and a wide variety of fruit. Not the everyday stuff I eat at home. Though the food that had is delicious. The wifi has poor reception. The television has poor reception The air condition was blowing warm air and it took two days for maintenance to come by and fix it. They were renovating a building in VIP. So between 6am and 7am, you will wake up to the sounds of drilling, hammering, and sawing. Not cool if you’ve had too much to drink the night before, or if you look forward to your vacation to sleep in. The upper edges of the pools were grimy and grungy, although there was a crew out every morning keeping the water clean. There were parents that allowed their children (assuming between ages 6-12) to swim topless. While I respect that other cultures have different values; topless kids isn’t my thing. It was difficult to relax on the beach with vendors bothering you every 5 to 10 minutes. There was one case where a photographer and his partner had a snake, and I was calling my daughter out of the ocean to come and take a look at it. They got impatient and didn’t want to wait until I got my daughters attention, and they stormed off. Other than that, their staff are very kind and deserve better, because customers take their anger out on them because of poor VIP accommodations for what the Occidental charges. I would love my money back for the upgrade. Anyone who would rate this place is probably very easy going, and I’m not a very difficult person to please. Go to Barcelo Palace Deluxe for the same price and get treated like royalty. Enjoy! More>
