Fun All-Inclusive and you Can't Beat the Wildlife and natural surroundings,
MAbelini, Boston, Massachusetts

It was the first time for my husband, me and our 3 20s children's to vacation at an all-inclusive resort. Although we don't have a comparison, we were very happy with this resort. It has beautiful grounds that were being tended daily. The staff is extremely friendly and willing to help. The main building is beautiful with lots to offer. There is a small canal that runs through it and is flanked by many gift shops. The tour companies Amstar and Expedia both have representatives to book tours or answer questions in a shop along the canal. I highly recommend booking excursions through one of these two so that you can get help if there is a problem with your reservation or trip. The lobby always has infused water and a desk with guest services. The WIFI is NOT free at this hotel. We used our phones if we had to go online. There is a business center with paid WIFI we didn't use either. Downstairs along the canal is a bar and colorful Macaws. At night they have a Mayan ceremony along the canal. Another section of this main building are most of the dinner restaurants: a Mexican, a Mediterranean, a Steakhouse and an Asian. There is also a buffet for all three meals. There is a pizzeria/taco stand for quicker bites later at night. There is an open plaza where the nightly shows, family movies and kids participation events take place each night. Twice while we visited there was a bazaar with some Mexican handcrafts. Some artisans created their works such as spray paintings and glass blowing. Just outside this plaza area is one of the paths that leads to Xcaret Park. There is a punt boat that you can ride down the canal at this point. Rooms: We had two connecting rooms in building 19 on the second floor. This was at a main entrance to the activities pool. Some days you could hear pool music inside our room, but mostly we were out and about and didn't notice any noise. We had a king bed in our room and two doubles in the second. We requested a roll-away when we arrived. The rooms were very spacious and the fridges stocked with beer, soda and bottled water. They left individual bags of chips and peanuts. There was a safe in the closet, ice bucket, bathroom with shower, large closet, and tv. The balcony had two chairs and a table. There was a concierge at the desk when you enter the building to answer any questions. Jessica was very helpful, although all were very friendly. Note: Housekeeping was accommodating but in their own time. It took 3 phone calls for the rollaway and then another call for bedding. Beach: Beach was a great temperature and just enough waves. It is small though and this place would not be for you if you are looking for a long expanse of white sandy beach. Since Xcaret is on a rocky coastline, they dug out a beach with sand. On some days, we smelled an unpleasant odor while swimming. We signed out snorkel equipment but had to snorkel in the beach area since the cove side was too rough. We still saw colorful fish. The beach has a bar, restrooms, towels (give a towel card for one towel and get a card back when you return your towel - cards are not specific to a person so you can hold onto the towel and turn in later at the pool etc). There is a good number of loungers, hammocks and swinging canopy beds along the beach. They may run out if you didn't get to the beach early but they are plentiful. The activity rep gets a volleyball game going daily. Pools: Most of the pools run into one another in the main pool area with the swim up bar and Seafood Restaurant. They are all fringed with lounge chairs. There is a second pool with mini jacuzzi pools within the big pool. There was a third pool that we never checked out over by the Royal level. Lastly, there is an adult only pool by the beach. This is small but fun in that it has rock walls and sandy bottom and sea water that actually flows in from the ocean. The pools are not lit at night and close fairly early. Twice while we were there, they had pool games, a pool cannon, bouncy balls etc with an activity leader. Activities: There are many activities. Some are organized (Giant Jenga, Dance exercise, Volleyball, ping pong ). Some are scheduled (archery, cooking class, Bingo, nightly shows). Some you sign out the equipment whenever you want (shuffleboard, tennis, snorkeling, and a putting green). The gym is a good size and bigger than most hotel gyms. Grounds and Wildlife: This place is teeming with wildlife and we loved it!!! All the paths and all the buildings are surrounded by trees and plants.. You feel like you are in the middle of the rainforest. They have a few eco-trails that cut through these wooded areas. We saw more wildlife just along the paths though. The biggest thrill for us are the monkeys. If you go to the main boardwalk from the bar and stand near the "don't feed the monkeys" sign around 4 pm, you will most likely see monkeys. We had several encounters with monkeys and just loved it. There are many iguanas that sun near you. We saw a deer in the trees along that main boardwalk and were told that it was a rare sighting. We saw many coatimundi and agouti (we think that is what they were). We were walking through the main building and a coatimundi dropped from a tree and walked along the corridor. Of course there are plenty of colorful birds flying around and some flamingos on premises too. If you like wildlife, you will enjoy this resort. There is some kind of timeshare program at this resort. Several times when we asked a question about something (dolphin swim, taxi to Playa del Carmen) we were told that if we sit through the presentation they will give us a discount or free item etc. We refused and they never got pushy but it came up several times. Miscellaneous Pros: There were practically no lines at the bars for drinks. There was a wide diversity of drinks and liquor and non-alcoholic. The frozen drinks were great. I mentioned my husband's birthday to the concierge and she sent up a bottle of champagne and a platter of fresh fruit. Very thoughtful. There is a tram that drives around the resort from the beach to the various buildings. We found the resort to be very walkable though. i lost a fin while snorkeling and one of the resort photographers spent a long time helping to look for it After I finally gave up and paid for the missing fin, she continued to look, found it and turned it in for me. Wish I got her name but appreciate her going above and beyond to help.! Miscellaneous Cons: Other than the chips and peanuts in your room, there wasn't any place for a take-out snack. It would have been fun to have a "stand" with portable fresh fruit, churros, popcorn or whatever for a mid-day nibble. Housekeeping did a nice job but was inconsistent. For example one of our rooms had bathrobes, the other didn't. Neither had the umbrellas. Soap although clearly used and on the shower floor wasn't replaced. In summary, We had a great week and would recommend the Occidental at Xcaret to others.

Just back from a fabulous holiday at this resort. Huge thanks to Alma St Clair and Maria Trejo in building 18, and the wonderful waiters Gabino and Leo in the pool bar (we were the ones with the ‘very tall’ son). Loved every minute, service amazing, food great, and wildlife mind blowing. Access to the park was so easy, and so memorable. Never had a problem getting sunloungers, and the beach was fantastic. Holiday of a lifetime, highly recommend 😎

We as a family of four have just returned after a 14 night stay. I’ll make this review purely on facts and not on opinion. Good points. Hotel itself is very grand, spread over a large area in the middle of a forest setting. Lots of wildlife including spider monkeys and iguanas. Rooms are very comfortable although unless you’re based in the royal level you will have a shower, not ideal. Food and drink. The speciality restaurants are great. Great food, great staff that are very welcoming. If your peckish after a few drinks there’s Paco tacos and pizza bar based on the upper level near the nightly entertainment. Adrian is the star man. Watch out for him. Not only super friendly but also very short. You may stay on him. Entertainment. The staff do a huge variety of shows in the evening mostly based around singing and dancing but are better than some hotel entertainment. The pool teams are great with loads of fun to be had. The pool bar area is a great place to be located. Not so good points( not bad points) Internet connection. The hotel are going through a provider change and is very intermittent. Also $79 (US) for a weeks WiFi, not really acceptable this and age. Buffet food. Can be very repetitive but the staff do work tirelessly and it’s production for the masses. 7-9 pm is a little hectic so try and avoid these Timor’s is possible. Overall a fantastic place, made better than the staff who are always friendly and can’t do enough for you. Would I return, without doubt but after a couple of years.

Didn’t want to go home!

A fabulous animal- filled hotel that felt like paradise. The beach was absolutely heavenly, perfect for relaxation or a game of volleyball and the sea was so clear and safe! It was wonderful to see all the different fish and birds around the area. All the bar staff worked so hard and never failed to whip you up a cocktail (my favourite being a chocolate martini at the lobby bar in the evening) which was fantastic! Our favourite place at the hotel was the beach buffet, which was open for breakfast and lunch and provided a wonderful view to sit and have a coffee. We tried all the specialty restaurants, and found that the quality at the Oriental was by far superior. We were looking forward to the steak house but unfortunately were disappointed due to an hour long wait to get a table and then an equally long wait to get our food which lacked quality. Also loved the Fish and Mexican restaurants and enjoyed the array of antipasti at the Italian, but found that the pasta was rubbery as obviously had been cooked way in advance. Although the resort is large, we thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the lovely grounds to get to the beach or the lobby. The shuttle comes about every 20 minutes if you don’t feel like walking, but none-the-less I still wouldn’t recommend the hotel to anyone with mobility issues. The pools were nice but felt like they were not quite clean enough for me. The staff worked everyday to remove the debris from the trees that’s inevitable in this jungle setting, so I can’t complain that it was their fault. I must also mention that if you want good sun beds each day at the beach/pool you need to reserve towels on them at around 8am. If we came down later we could usually find somewhere to sit, although further back and not as nice. The rooms were impeccably clean thanks to our wonderful maid Norma in building 21 who deserves a raise with the fantastic job she did everyday, despite our mess! The large king size bed was wonderful, as well as the spacious bathroom and decent balcony. I can’t fail to mention the friendliness of all of the staff at the Occidental, who said ‘hola’ to us each and every time we walked by, making us feel very welcome. The concierges in our building ensured that were enjoying our stay as we passed them every morning, but didn’t once try to push a time share offer, so hopefully have taken the hint from reading other reviews! I haven’t given 5 stars for only a couple of reasons. Firstly, the rude young man at the towel booth by the beach. He obviously didn’t want to be there and made it very clear each and everyday, I wish I had put in a complaint. The lack of towels was also an issue. If you didn’t get your towels swapped by 9:30am they were already all out, sometimes we couldn’t get clean ones until 6pm! Secondly, the food. We did enjoy a lot of it, there was always a large selection that had something for everyone and more than enough, but it lacked flavour and wasn’t always the quality I would expect. Overall, a wonderful hotel that outdid my expectations for my first and definitely not last trip to Mexico! A few minor changes off 5*!
