Not Celiac Aware - all you can eat gluten though!
muncer, amsterdam
Thu Jul 20 07:51:32 EDT 2017
This review is just for those who are celiac and genuinely need to be sure your food is gluten free. My full hotel review will be posted when I have been here 2 weeks. So if you just want to know about the hotel you don't need to read this. My family and I have stayed at many all inclusive hotels around the world but never has a hotel been as unprepared for those who are celiac - like my 16 year old daughter who is violently ill if she has gluten. There are several restaurants to chose from but the main one is a buffet. None of the food is labelled for intolerances and the chefs give different advice for the same food on different days! Their default for those with celiac seems to be that everything contains gluten. Rice, scrambled eggs, baked potatoes!!Thats just plain lazy and not what you would expect from a reasonable standard hotel group - let alone one that claims to be slightly higher end. Their solution is steamed vegetables and chicken - and that's only after making a bit of a fuss and being made to feel like you are putting them to a huge inconvenience for the ÂŁ12,500 You've paid to stay at the hotel for 2 weeks. Again for a hotel like this that's very, very poor. There are a number of other first come, first served restaurants. All list a gluten free option for at least one of the three courses but again these are things like rice and vegetables at the Thai restaurant for example. In the US and Western Europe that's called vegetarian not gluten free! Also most of the restaurants have one or two of the courses with a gluten free option but not all three. So while the others enjoy their all inclusive 3 courses you are left to munch on crackers! Why not at least offer the gluten free dessert at all the restaurants from the one restaurant that has one? It's not rocket science and the restaurants are all within a minutes walk of each other. It would take very little effort to cook Almost any of the dishes without a sauce and away from any food with gluten. I also think they could have a couple of gluten free sauces available. In fact I'm sure a number of their sauces probably are gluten free if they looked. It would also take very little effort to have a little bit of imagination - it's not like this is a rare intolerance. This hotel caters for over 300 weddings a year so I can't believe that nearly every day they must be catering for people with celiac. And I'm sure they don't give rice, vegetables and plain chicken to the wedding guests. We have had to venture outside to eat and most restaurants here get celiac, are able to explain what can be eaten and have plenty of options. A huge amount of cooking is done here without gluten. We even went to the tiny island of Holbox and there are whole gluten free menus in some of the restaurants! I emailed the hotel 3 times in the months before we came and also booked the preferred guest option as this was supposed to offer a higher and more personalised standard. Guess what? That doesn't apply if you are celiac. So if you are celiac my very strong advice would be to consider whether you book this hotel. I will add further posts on this topic on the other tripadvisor advice forums and my travel blog.

Amazing Family Vacation!

My family of 4 just returned home yesterday after a week's stay at Now Sapphire and we absolutely loved it! The room was spotless every single day, thank you Luz! The pool is gorgeous and there are sweet servers asking for your drink order. At the Market Cafe, the waiters are attentive, polite, and even funny! We loved Alberto and Ivan, but they are all fantastic! They called our daughters "princess" more than the staff at Disney :) Our favorite meal was at Lemon Grass. Our hibachi meal prepared by Geraldo and served by Mario and Mario was so delicious. The grounds were gorgeous and the beach had hardly any seaweed. We would definitely return to this resort because we felt so welcomed by all of the truly wonderful staff.

Peaceful and beautiful resort with all the amenities

We went to Now Sapphire the first week of July for a friend's destination wedding and enjoyed every moment of it. For the past couple of years have been trying a different hotel every time we go (at least twice a year) and I would definitely go back. This was my first Now resort and it makes me excited to try the other Now resorts. The food was plentiful and well prepared. We ate at several of the restaurants and enjoyed every one of them. The last night there we dined at the French restaurant and the food was delicious and artistically presented. Loved being able to eat at the Barefoot Grill during the day so that we didn't need to dry off from the pool/beach. Anytime we needed the front desk or the concierge, they were attentive and made sure our requests were completed. The beach was well kept up and they were constantly raking any seaweed that appeared. I've been to other beaches were you had to swim through large clumps of seaweed...at least here it was only slivers of seaweed which didn't really bother you. The pool was really clean and you can tell they spend a lot of time making sure its clean. The bartenders and servers both by the pool, on the beach, and in the lobby bars were extremely friendly. We tipped them every day even though I know you don't have to, but it was definitely worth it. The only con I had for the resort was that our air conditioning wasn't as cold as we would have liked. When you first walked into the room it felt fantastic but there was no adjusting it once you got used to it. It may have been because we were on the ocean side and the sun beat down on us all day. It did help to close the curtains and minimize the sun getting in while we were gone all day. This was my first time not being in the U.S. for the Fourth of July celebration. It felt a bit strange, but they had the entire resort decorated in red/white/blue. They had a large celebration throughout the day and an even nicer celebration in the evening. They were actually more patriotic than some of the parties I've been in my home town. All in all, great time, great people, great food and entertainment.

Wonderful family vacation to Mexico

My family and I just returned from staying at the Now sapphire resort in Mexico. This was the first time we had traveled to Mexico with our one-year-old daughter and we were not sure what to expect. Our expectations were quickly surpassed and exceeded. The resort was very luxurious, clean and maintained. We found the entire staff to be incredibly kind and very kid friendly. I could not speak enough praise of how receptive and loving they were to our toddler. Waiters, waitresses, concierges and all other staff were inclusive and friendly to our family. This resort is right on the ocean and there is plenty of great beach access. The main pool is gorgeous and has lots of places to play and explore. I would recommend the Now Sapphire to everyone I know.

A great hotel with wonderful people and if it isn't quite right, just ask.

Just arrived home today from two weeks at the Now Sapphire and wanted to drop this note whilst fresh. We paid a little bit more to have the preferred guest options which in the main meant access to a stand alone adult pool area and a preferred guest lounge. The latter was an oasis on air con and hospitality and was well worthwhile that little extra - lovely atmosphere and help yourself to drinks or Sergio will be quick to assist. Travelling with best friends from the UK as well as joining friends travelling from Canada I hope that you will enjoy this review. At a peak of 9 reducing to 6 when our friends from Canada departed, tables outside of the buffet restaurant were difficult. However, based on a small delay for breakfast in one of the restaurants, we were introduced to Armando who is responsible for the restaurant provision within Now Sapphire. All I can say if Armando is an ambassador for this hotel, people will continue to return to it. Nothing was too much issue and he even managed to assist us with a later check out - out of his remit but thank you! We stayed in building 3, a perfect balance of being close enough to the main areas of the hotel but perfectly located next to the beach. Room was excellent, clean and well provided amenities, even for the most discerning guests. Food overall very good to some days excellent, service always excellent - a big positive. Some names to look out for - Eduardo and Jesus in the Market Café although their brilliant English seems to have been learnt from every episode of "only fools and horses" - find out it is fun. Luis and Laura who were fantastic waiters on the beach area and were always ahead of your thirst. In the Blue Water grill, please check out Edgar and George as they were excellent amongst a fantastic team. If you can book the teppanyaki restaurant then look out for Mario who made our two visits to the restaurant wonderful, including our last night. Overall very big positives for this hotel and we are likely to return in the future but a couple of recommendations to the senior team... please get the temperature down in the market café at lunchtime and night, brilliant food but many avoid as it is too hot; this would also help any larger parties that want quick access. One last note, check out Carmen in the Coco Café, she will remember you order on your second visit. Well Done Now Sapphire.
