Annual girls trip!

This was our second visit to the Onyx and it did not disappoint!!! We are extremely particular about the quality of where we stay and everything about this resort is amazing but the staff makes it extra special. This year we had a room in the preferred area with our own pool and it was absolutly perfect. The beach is fantastic and never over crowded so no running down early to save a spot. The service on the beach was amazing as well.Jenny is the best and then there is Mogueson who works around the pool and the beach helping wherever and whenever he can.He is truly an asset to this hotel. Our butler Manuel was ever so helpful making sure we had everything we needed.Florencio is wonderful working around the pool bar and was always awaiting our return from the beach to get us an ice cold drink. One of the nice things about staying at the Onyx is that you also have access to Breathless next store and we ate twice at the French restaurant .Manuel and Simon were our servers and were fantastic. The food was also very good. There are always so many options, even the pickiest eaters won’t go hungry. The management of this resort Mr. Holgado, Omar and Nicer, have very high standards and expect their staff to ensure everyone has a great vacation and under their watchful eyes, the resort is nothing less than fabulous..DONT HESITATE! JUST GO . YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED ..We will be back next year for sure!!!!

A Complete Review of NOW Onyx: Everything You Need and Want to Know

Expectations are key with anything. Coming into something with high standards will often lead to disappointment while the opposite is true as well. NOW Onyx is a solid 3 star hotel compared to the likes of a Ritz Carlton but to go one step further from a local perspective, it is a 3 star compared to Paradisus Palma Real (The Reserve). If you go into the hotel with the expectations of a solid 3 star resort, you will absolutely love your stay. With that being said, I wanted to review the pros and cons after returning from a 7 day stay for a Wedding Rooms: -rooms are modern. Updated and very nicely done. They are a bit on the smaller side and the sink area to get ready is very cramped for 2 people. While we didn't visit many many rooms, all of the rooms we did visit seemed to have the same mildew smell that other reviewers have commented about. That being said, the smell isn't strong and certainly shouldn't steer you away from staying at this resort. -There are 502 rooms at this hotel which means it is on the smaller side compared to the Hard Rock and Paradisus. This is a huge benefit as no matter where you stay on the property, you are very close to the beach and pool. -There are a few different types of rooms: deluxe, swim up, preferred, swim up preferred and ocean view. Personally, unless you get a swim up preferred with an ocean view, there is really no difference between any of the packages. Because this resort doesn't do wristbands, regular guests can easily access anything preferred can (minus a butler that also helps out 40 other rooms, which means they cannot be too attentive to any one particular room) The swim up with an ocean view is the same size and design as every other room, the view is just far superior. Please remember though, the resort isn't big, so if you don't really care about view or the price isn't worth the difference, you are a one minute walk away from the beach from the furthest point in the hotel. -the floors throughout the property are mostly tile, which does get slippery but what tile doesn't get slippery when wet. -the AC works very well. Has limits from 20 Celcius to 24 Celcius. 22.5 worked very well for us being from Arizona. Beach: -best beach in Punta Cana hands down. Being on the Atlantic side, this resort has a beautiful breeze all day and night. While I did read some reviews about the beach being windy, please realize there is a difference between wind and breeze. Because it is on the Atlantic side, the water is incredible. It is not calm like the Caribbean side and does have waves that you can body surf and boogey board (although the boogey boards that are sold in the shops down the beach are junk and way too overpriced). We vacation a lot on Coronado Island (San Diego) so my kids, 3 and 8, are very comfortable with waves etc. The waves are not very big but very fun! -you can rent snorkeling gear, paddle boards, sail boats and single or double kayaks to take out for free as part of being at the resort which makes for fun activities -beach was not crowded and finding chairs in ideal locations was not a problem at all like it can be at other resorts where you have to wake up at 5AM just to reserve seats -no seaweed like others have mentioned -couldn't have asked for a more perfect beach!! Pool: -not sure why almost every review talks about the pools being cold. While the pools are not heated (most resorts in Dominican Republic do not heat the pools), they are EXTREMELY refreshing. Not warm but not cold. The perfect temperature for a pool at any time of the day. Being from AZ, we have a pool in our backyard, so 99% of our time was spent on the beach BUT there were a few activities done by the pool so my kids were there occasionally. I suppose pool temperature is all relative, but we found the pool temp to be great. -a lot of people seemed to smoke cigarettes around the pool which I thought was gross. You can smoke throughout the entire property but seemed to occur around the pool a bit more than other places. -being that the resort isn't very crowded, the pool isn't super loud like Breathless can be next door based on reviews. If you are the type (like my family) that like to relax and enjoy the sun on vacation, this resort is perfect. not too noisy etc -there was a kids "hot tub" (not hot, just bubbly) that my 3 year old loved playing in as well Drinks: While my wife and I are not big drinkers, drinks and service at the bars were great like any all inclusive. Didn't have to wait for drinks and the bartenders were all very friendly. Food: Average. My wife didn't like the food at all but the general consensus throughout our group was average. Like any all inclusive, play it safe and lower your expectations and you won't be disappointed. The buffet had a lot of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Again, there's always something for everyone. Breakfast in the buffet was beautiful overlooking the ocean with the breeze. The coffee is also quite delicious. The restaurants were OK. Italian service was very slow and food was ehh. Didn't eat at the French. Bluewater Grill had the nicest ambiance and food was good (not great but good) and the hibachi was fun. The steak was extremely tough but the fried rice and shrimp were great. Special shout out to the hibachi chef Dawri and our server Orlando who made the experience quite loud and fun for the kids. The beach bar was good for nachos, hamburgers and hot dogs especially when you didn't want to actually sit down for lunch. There are a few shops up by the main lobby as well. There is a coffee shop, which was good. There is an ice cream shop, which was amazing and a burger shop. The burgers were OK but the downside is it doesn't open until 3 PM. For those of you who stay up late, it stays open until 2AM. We are in bed by 9 however. Entertainment: Being that this is a family resort, the entertainment could've been so much better. There are a lot of kids (all ages) and there weren't many activities that all the kids can do together to get to know one another. That being said, Maximo, was fantastic and tried very hard everyday to get games together on the beach. (volleyball, baseball, egg tossing etc) There just wasn't much to do for the kids. Overall, the hotel needs to definitely improve in this area. The shows at night were average. The dancing afterward was also just average. If you are an adult looking to party, Breathless, would be a much better option. While, we didn't go to Breathless because we have kids, and are not party people, some people in our group went over there a few nights and said the party was bigger, louder, better, etc. The kids club is a joke. There are a few video games and little theater/playground but we didn't put our kids in it at all. The teens club was also a joke. A few tennis courts that no one played tennis on, a ping pong table and rock climbing wall that we didn't see anyone use. If you are looking for a great vacation for your kids to have fun, I am sure there are better hotels out there. If your kids can have fun playing in the ocean and pool but don't need many other activities to have fun, than this resort would suffice. Personally, my 8 year old had a blast because he loves the ocean, but he wanted to play with other kids as well and unfortunately there weren't many opportunities for him to do that. Service: Service was good. Rodney and Vanessa in the Concierge group went above and beyond for my family and were amazing in every way. English was well spoken for the most part by all of the staff. Overall, everyone was very friendly and willing to help with anything as long as they understood what you wanted/needed. Theft: I read reviews about things being stolen from the safes, so we didn't keep any cash in the safes but 3 rooms in the group wound up getting their money stolen from their safes. This seems to be a known issue throughout the hotel and while management rectified the situation by giving money back and offering credit toward future stays, this is something that needs to be addressed and eliminated immediately. Advice: don't bring anything valuable and whatever cash you do bring for tips, don't keep it in the safe and you will be fine. Overall: We had an amazing vacation! This resort doesn't quite compare to Paradisus, but it was still amazing. If Paradisus is 12 out of 10, NOW Onyx is a solid 8. We would certainly go back as we got everything we wanted/needed from this vacation. I am sure the few things that the hotel can improve upon, will certainly get better with time. This resort is still very new. The palm trees and landscaping are still growing. If you are looking for true 5 star class in Punta Cana, I would recommend going somewhere else (like the Paradisus Palma Real) but if you set the right expectations, this resort is incredible!!

Best Birthday Trip!

Received amazing service from the moment we stepped out of our shuttle to the time we left the resort. We booked the reservation through our timeshare and when we arrived, we were notified that we received access to the preferred club amenities. If you are questioning whether or not you should upgrade, i 100% suggest to. The Preferred Club Pool was a m a z i n g. Evan was very helpful with whatever we needed. With the preferred amenities, we received a butler. His name was Obispo and he was more than a butler- he was our friend. He was the most helpful and nicest person. At any point if something was not working or we needed something, he was there for us. Obi made my birthday very special and i am EXTREMELY grateful we met him! Overall, we would 100% come back!

Excellent All-Inclusive Resort

Just got back from our trip to Now Onyx and it a beautiful resort! Staff is extremely friendly, especially Evan and Mariano. Simon at the pool bar also provided excellent service and often had my drink ready before I even asked. The pool entertainers also did a fantastic job. We also loved the Preferred pool for an adult-only place to relax...although some younger adults blasted loud rap music on their "island" while tossing around a football in the pool on our last day. That's about the only complaint I have...that there was no one who thought to put a stop to that. Upon arrival, we sat in the lounge with a welcome drink while we were informed about the resort. I stepped away and, upon my return, my wife was signing up for the $300 "Preferred" upgrade. My understanding was that it gave us access to the Preferred pool, the Preferred section of the buffet, the Preferred lounge, and premium liquor. I must say that, while I loved the Preferred pool, the upgrade was not worth the money. The reason being that there is no wristband or other way to identify guests as Preferred. The only difference is a different colored room card. What I quickly discovered was that no one asks for your room card when you enter any Preferred areas. I was left with the gut feeling that most of the people at the Preferred pool and Preferred lounge probably didn't even pay for it and that we were the suckers who dropped $300 on it. Of our 5 days there, FINALLY, an employee walked around the Preferred pool on our last day and asked to see our card. In a way, I was thrilled that someone actually checked so that I felt there was a reason to pay the extra $300. Unfortunately, when I waited to see him make the full round and ask everyone at the pool, there were a few groups that he passed right by and I had the feeling that they weren't actually Preferred. I really hate to harp on this because it doesn't change my impression of the resort as a first-class place. I just wish there was a better system in place to ensure that people who don't pay to upgrade won't get the same access that honest people pay for. I highly recommend this resort and will definitely return!

Now Onyx is a top notch resort. The food, staff, grounds, pools, beach and rooms are spectacular. The entire experience was relaxing and a fantastic way to refresh from the monotony of day to day life.
