We arrived at Now Onyx on the 2nd of January, our original hotel was cancelled by BA and we were rebooked in this hotel by BA within hours of cancelling our previous booking. We rushed to check the reviews and they were not good, so we arrived nervous and expecting the worst. Our booking was a garden view with access to pool from the bedroom. We arrived at the hotel, we were welcome and checked in. I must say the young man (Ivan I think he was) who took us to our room was great, friendly, helpful and gave us a lot of information on how things work. If you have not been in a village style hotel, you will be initially shocked and somewhat lost! About the garden view room, the first thing that hit us was the terrible smell of damp. It was difficult to stay in this place! The room it self was clean and spacious but we could not stay with that smell. We went to reception to ask for a change and we were quickly offered the option of an upgrade to a "Preferred" club. Now, if you have paid an all inclusive as we had, this was costly. However, our room was so pungent that we accepted the upgrade. This meant that as well as having a room in a better location, we had the so called butler to help us with all our needs. We barely saw our butler though! I must say, the location was excellent but the room exactly the same as the previous one. We paid for the location. We ordered a room service that night, we were tired and we were expecting something special as members of the "preferred club" but it was worse than food from a motorway restaurant. I suggested to them not to have any room service to avoid customers disappointments, it was bad, bad! old cuts of smoke salmon in a plate covered with a film. It was clear everything had been siting somewhere for hours!! The breakfast area on the other hand, was clean and the selection in the buffet area was superb! The selection of fresh fruits, fresh juices, smoothies, pastries, cooked breakfasts and everything else was very, very good indeed. We ate our dinners in the restaurants within the complex but never ordered a la carte in the lunch area. If you like wine, buy yours from the restaurants. The free wine provided in this hotel is not fit for consumption, the sparkling wine was even worse. The staff was excellent, friendly, polite, patient and very helpful. Even though they sometimes looked overworked, they provided a big smile and a great service. Overall, the management need to look again at the service they provide. Some services are very good and very surprisingly others were terrible. I do not see the reason to have terrible Spanish wine and sparkling wine when they can have good Latin American wine for example. As I said, it is a mixed review. Maybe too big to manage successfully.

We were treated like queens!

I have been to many resorts in Punta Cana. I have never had a truly bad experience. However, this resort was exceptional. It was so clean, and the people who worked there went above and beyond to make our experience the best possible ! Everyone was kind and made you feel like you were a special guest. The food was delicious, the rooms were comfortable and clean, and the beach and pools are beautiful !!! And most of all the people are the best ! A special thank you to the preferred area in helping make my friends birthday a very special experience !

Definately not a 5 star resort.

Arrived for a family vacation on the week between Christmas and New Year's. After spending the last several years at all inclusive resorts in Mexico , we were sadly disappointed. Booked the trip through Costco . I made our selection based on the reviews of other vacationers. After spending 6 days here it's hard to believe that we could be rating the same resort. The hotel is shabby and beat up. Most of the staff is disinterested and seemed to not care about doing a good job. Any call to housekeeping required a minimum of 3 calls to get any response. The lack of good management Is apparent at every level of this sub par resort. The quality of food in the restaurants range from inedible to average at best. The buffet being the worst and the French restaurant being the best, but still only average. The restaurant reservation system is a nightmare. Placed several reservations and arrived at this time specified only to find out that there was in fact no reservation. The one bright spot was the pool and beach area. The beach was nice and the water was clean. The pool was OK. There was waiters to take drink orders but no food. We made the best of our trip there but certainly would never return at any price. We made the best of our week there but definitely would never return.

Wonderful Family Trip!

I am a travel agent and had the pleasure to stay with my family at the Now Onyx for a personal vacation. This resort is gorgeous and the staff wonderful! Swim out rooms were amazing with the kids, they enjoyed at all hours of the day, food was great and entertainment to! I want to give a huge shout out to our favorite employee Julia Roberts, she made our trip even more wonderful! So caring, fun and attentive! She went that extra mile and my kids adored her, really made our trip special spending time with her. I also got the chance to be with her in the VIP Exhale Club at Breathless next door and her service was exceptional! Would definitely come back again and will recommend to my clients. Thank you Julia, Now Onyx and Breathless for a memorable trip!

This is a detailed review which will hopefully answer all your questions if you’re looking at this property! We travelled as a family of 3, with a teenage boy. Preferred Club: Our stay had preferred club privileges, which I would highly recommend at this resort. This brings with it butler service, access to the lovely preferred adult pool, preferred beach area, 2 lounges, preferred check in and check out, access to the Breathless resort next door, and access to the very pleasant Faire restaurant at breakfast and lunch. The Preferred Manager, the very nice Nicer Fernandez, sorted out a room change for us when we had troublesome issues over our first few days and he ensured that we were very well looked after during the rest of our stay, always checking in with us when he saw us to make sure we were enjoying our stay. Our butler was Aris, a fabulous and very hard working guy. It was a treat having him assigned to us. The Rooms: The rooms are all fairly similar on the inside, it’s the location that makes most difference here. Our first room was a swim out suite (very nice), which was later changed to an ocean front suite (marvellous). The showers and jacuzzis are lovely. The choice of putting a shared door between the toilet and shower is curious. The beds are very comfortable. The bedside furniture should have been nicer (it was too plastic for my taste). The air conditioning works well, the controls are temperamental though. Some people complained of dampness in the room, which we thankfully did not experience maybe because we used the A/C and weren’t leaving our patio door open. The rooms nearer to the front of the resort can be a bit noisy at night as they are next to the entertainment areas. There are mosquitoes, but they didn’t bother us, we used the incense sticks in the room and they seem to work well. The resort does seem to be having trouble with fixtures and fittings, we had to report a few things to be fixed, which is not ideal for a new resort. This is however not a deal breaker. The Beach: Now Onyx sits on a lovely stretch of beach with soft golden sand. It is a nice, long and quiet beach so perfect for walks. There’s no need for water shoes as there is on some other beaches. There were days when the Atlantic was so calm that it almost felt like the Caribbean, then other days it was fairly choppy. The water temperature was lovely though, the ocean at most times was warmer than the swimming pools. The Swimming Pools: The resort is new so has a fair few options. There is the main pool area, where most activities happen. There is a transparent, walled, tank style infinity pool suspended over a part of the main pool which was a bit of fun for my son to get some fabulous pictures taken and a nifty opportunity for me to sneak in a cheeky physics lesson on optics and refraction :-) ! Though this pool area is a very large area, it was not our favourite area as there was little to no shade and rather stark landscaping. We were in a swim out room at the start of our stay and my son and husband both liked the quietness, privacy and also the shade offered by the pool at our doorstep. The preferred family pool is really too small and not happening enough to warrant a trek to what was the other side of the resort from where we were, so we never went at all. This was a disappointment as with a new resort they could’ve designed a fabulous preferred family pool. The star of the resort was the truly lovely preferred adults only pool. If it wasn’t for this pool, our stay at the resort would’ve been disappointing. This is a lovely spot, beautifully landscaped and designed. It was easy to while away the entire day here, just soaking in the sun, relaxing. Bars: We found the range of alcohol at the resort was not as wide as the other resorts that we have visited, belonging to the same group of hotels. You would find something you liked after adjusting for brand preference though. After trying every bar, and most bartenders, I can without a doubt say that the best drinks were at the lobby in the Moments bar. The bartenders there (Francis and Miguel - I hope I’m remembering their names right!) were brilliant and got the cocktails perfect every time. Even the coffee and service here was really good, better than anywhere else in the resort. This was followed closely by the Sports Bar, where again attention to detail was given to every little request. The drinks everywhere else were a bit of a hit and a miss, though Julio at the preferred pool did always care to remember any special requests. Maybe the Preferred lounges can have more choices? Food: The food at the resort was average to good, I’d rate it at a 6/10, you’d always get something you liked but nothing was fabulous. I did love the salad, the fresh fruit and the smoothies which were absolutely divine. We went to most restaurants and they were all about average. It’s a shame that they don’t have a proper Dominican cuisine restaurant as I bet that would’ve been rather good. We had a dinner under the stars booked for a special occasion which was rather disappointing so I wouldn’t recommend it at all. The weather was turning for the worse and with the amount of wind that was up, they should really have told us to cancel. We weren’t allowed to swap out any choices from the fixed menu either, which was a bit of a bummer. We did order from room service on several occasions, which my son used to love. The hot dogs, ice cream and popcorn at the restaurants in the plaza area were all quite nice. Disappointing points: Coco Cafe: This was a bizarre and really strange one. My husband was bringing back coffee for me the first couple of mornings and it tasted really bad. I went with him the third day and realised they weren’t using the fancy coffee machine but a rather sad vending machine. What an utter shame as Dominican coffee is lovely and they’re serving really foul stuff. The management should really do something about this one! Core Zone Teen Club: This was the most dead and completely neglected area in the whole resort from what I could tell. We took my son, who used to love the Explorer’s Club when younger, to the Core Zone area to discover that apparently none of the activities were happening. There was no air conditioning, nowhere to sit and generally it seemed like this was an area no one had paid attention to! A huge let down compared to the teen clubs in the other resorts we have seen. Housekeeping: Unfortunately, this was a sore point throughout our stay. We had to ring repeatedly at times to get someone to service our room. The carts were always around, but no one was manning them. If we would put a do not disturb sign on for a few minutes, we would always find a ‘sorry we missed you’ sign on our door. This happened too many times to be a coincidence. There is also no ‘please service the room’ sign available, which is strange for a hotel. Minibar replenishment was also a difficult task, with the telephone number not listed anywhere clearly. Definitely needs fixing! Entertainment: The team work hard, but unfortunately the results are just about mediocre. Overall, we had a really enjoyable stay. The negative points are few and easily fixable. We would return in a group, not by ourselves, and hopefully then use the ability to access Breathless next door. It looked like a lot of fun, but Now Onyx looks like a better place to stay.
