The Moon Palace Jamaica offers so much. The amenities are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Even though we took a few excursions off-site, we could have easily left the resort and had an equally fabulous time. We were able to swim with dolphins, go sailing, kayaking, paddle board, snorkel, take a catamaran cruise, boogie board, and water ski without ever getting on a bus to leave the resort. We were able to use the resort credits for excursions which was a great perk. The food was amazing. The Japanese hibachi restaurant was delicious and entertaining. We dined there several times. The Italian restaurant has the best lasagna ever! The buffet featured lots of Jamaican favorites like oxtails and curry goat. We enjoyed being able to taste the local cuisine. The drink were inconsistent in the pool area, but the lobby bar team was the best. Comar, Sabrina, Tamara, and Odain were so full of life. They were like family after a few days. All of the resort staff was super friendly and so talented. There was evening entertainment that was really good (Michael Jackson show, magic show, Drum show) There was always something to see or do. The only sour note was how rude the timeshare salesman got after we said no. The rooms were small too. I booked a family suite for my family of 6 and we were a bit cramped. I was expecting a living area and that is not a feature in a standard room. A living area would have required an upgrade. Other than that, I can’t complain. I would definitely go back to Moon Palace Jamaica.

We had a blast at Moon Palace Jamaica and for sure we will return and bring family and friends to this gorgeous resort! What can I say! A month prior to check in till the end of our stay the staff of Moon Palace Jamaica is really helpful, caring, and provided excellent customer Service. Nikki our assigned concierge set up everything: tours, private dinner and spa flawlessly before we even arrive at the resort. All we did when we arrive was to enjoy our vacation. This is a fantastic resort. The location is great, it is within the town of Ocho Rios, you can walk and shop to the market. The staff are amazing. They will go out their way to help out. Truly a 5 star luxury resort. One day the resort were out of Mangoes, Richard the supervisor at the buffet promised us mangoes and the next day, lo and behold there were mangoes waiting for us when we went for breakfast. We also arranged a private dinner at one of the Gazebo, Nikki and Ronick provided an amazing customer service to make it happen. The decoration, food and the live music was phenomenal. Paul the sommelier provided us with wines that we all enjoyed. My son had braids and the night before the scheduled photo shoot, his braid came undone. Tanya the concierge supervisor, at 6:30PM made the extra steps to ensure that the staff from the SPA will able to fix my son's braid. A true example of excellent customer service. The hotel is very clean. the staff are genuine on their service to their guests. Nikki at the pool and beach ensure that we have everything we need. The bartenders are great and will accommodate any cocktails you requested. On our last dinner at the Pier 8, they set up a beautifully decorated table by the beach for my family. Ricardo at Pier 8 is phenomenal on his job. I would like to thank Marcus the pier 8 supervisor for making it happened. As I stated before, we will return to this amazing jewel of Jamaica - Moon Palace Resort!

I totally recommend Moon Palace resorts. We stayed in Ochi Rios, with such great choices of restaurants. We loved Piers 8 which gave a new twist for to Carribean dishes. The staff were 100% committed to ensuring that their service was spot on. We love the entertainment, the choices of activities and the drinks were branded with great cocktails, especially the ‘Bob Marley’! Our bedrooms were clean, luxurious and spacious. We are booking again next year... and another thing the spa was out of this world! You’ve just got to go....

Ya man! This is the place to stay in Ocho Rios!

To preface this review, I am a Palace Resorts Elite Member and I have stayed in most of the Palace Resorts in Mexico. This was my first visit to their only resort in Ocho Rios Jamaica. TIP! Download the Palace Resorts App (available to all guests) to get lots of information about the resort in advance and track your hotel bill once you have checked in. I welcome questions from travelers. AIRPORT TRANSPORT Very easy to find the place to get transportation to Montego Bay if you are using resort sponsored transport. The ride is about 1 ½ hours. The scenery is beautiful as it is a coastal ride the entire time. Our driver, Jimmy, was great. Gave us lots of history and showed points of interest. Mid-way there was a brief restroom stop that also offered a place to get a beverage and souvenirs (which I would not buy here). Expect to depart at least 3 hours before your departing flight when returning to Montego Bay. ARRIVAL Welcoming arrival with a cool towel, non-alcoholic beverage, and fresh flower for the ladies. Moon Palace was referenced as one of the top three nicest resorts on the island and it is a stark contrast to what you see on your ride to the resort. It is gated and absolutely beautiful. Note that check-in appears to be quite a process, but the front desk staff is friendly. TIP! If you arrive early (before 3pm), be sure to pack a swim suit in your carry on so you can leave your luggage at the front door and immediately begin to enjoy the restaurants, pools, and beach. Do not expect to get into your room until 3pm or later. ROOM We stayed in Tower 2, located in the center of the resort and the tallest of the three lodging buildings. Our Southern facing view was of the bay and the town of Ocho Rios, which I personally preferred to a strictly ocean view. We were on the 15th floor, so we overlooked the rooftop of the buildings. I did not fret over this, the view was spectacular and the rooms in Tower 2 have a full balcony with two chairs. Rooms are somewhat small, but adequate, with two very comfortable double beds. Honestly, our time spent in the hotel room in Jamaica was minimal; we were more focused on the resort and island activities. Amenities in the room included fully stocked bar, coffee maker, Chi hair products, Chi hair dryer and flat iron, clothing steamer, clothing iron/ironing board, safe, robes, and slippers. We were greeted with a special chocolate treat on our first day. Nightly turndown service was provided. CURRENCY At the time of this review, the Jamaican dollar was extremely low compared to the US dollar. We found no need for exchange, freely using US dollars to tip staff (see Tipping section) and pay for things on and off property. I used a credit card for the hotel and minimally for other items as I was informed that credit card fraud is rampant in the country. Keep all receipts. Take as many small bills with you that you can (plenty of $1s and $5s). TIP! The currency exchange counter in the resort lobby area would break down $20s at no charge, but I had to visit daily to do this since they did not seem to have a lot of small bills on hand on a regular basis. There is an ATM on property that will distribute cash in US or Jamaican dollars. STAFF Prior to arrival in Jamaica, I read many reviews that talked about how the staff was not friendly and accommodating like in Mexico, so I lowered my expectations. Having visited personally, I would offer the following. You are coming to a different country with a different culture than Mexico. The Jamaican people are proud and hard working. Not that those in Mexico are not – it is just different – so bring a different attitude. Instead of expecting them to drop everything for you, be a friendly, smiling face, ask their name, ask about their country and life. I found them to be very talkative and fascinating. Some notable staff members include Assian with resort customer service, Davian at the Sushi Bar, and “King Kong” with the watersport’s staff. Be prepared for slow service, sometimes painfully so. It just seems to be the way in Jamaica. TIPPING As a frequent visitor to the Mexican all-inclusive resort properties, I was not accustomed to frequent tipping, but it seemed to go a long way and was very appreciated at the resort in Jamaica. As mentioned, these are hard-working, proud people. I was told they were treated very well by the Moon Palace, but living costs are high on the island and they appreciated tips. I reserved tip money for housekeeping staff, and extended tips for exceptional service like a special decoration on the top of my foamy latte at the Boulangerie, restaurant/bar servers, and water sport’s staff. No need to go overboard. It does not take a lot to make a difference in the day of a staff member. RESTAURANTS Momo: At the time of this review, you had to call just before 9:00 in the morning to get a seat at the Teppanyaki (tableside grill) and you were lucky if you got one. There are only a few Teppanyaki tables available and at our early seating, there were only two grills in operation while the rest of the dining area was vacant – so it lacked the energy and vibe we were used to with similar experiences at home. In my personal opinion, the Teppanyaki table experience was not worth the hassle. It was good, but I have had this experience before, so there was nothing unique about it at the Moon Palace for our family. Simply dining in the restaurant with the regular menu would be fine and does not require reservations. There is a dress code, but does not appear to be enforced as long as you are not showing up in a bathing suit and flip flops. Gondola: Moon Palace’s fine dining Italian restaurant. This was our favorite restaurant! Staff was amazing and portion sizes were relatively small allowing us to sample the full array of the menu from the appetizer to the dessert. Dress code. Pier 8: Outside dining by the pool area. Service was extremely slow for dinner to the point we walked out without dessert. Getting a server’s attention was difficult and when was asked for soy sauce, the server appeared distressed by the need to attend to a special need. I think they were doing their best. Pier 8 also offers a traditional Jamaican breakfast in the morning, which was quite good and service was better. TIP! Try the saltfish and ackee – delicious! Dress code. Buccaneer Bay: Offers three meals a day buffet. Service is a bit slow. TIP! If you want hot coffee as soon as you sit down, get it from the Boulangerie and bring it with you. Selection is good here. Sushi/Pizza bar: Sushi was ok. Do not expect anything special. Basic rolls that are mostly rice with a scant fish topping. Nigiri (minimal fish) and sashimi (good portion sizes) were also offered. Pizza was always available – okay, but nothing to write home about. This section also offered Paninis, but we did not take advantage. Boulangerie: Open 24-7. Loved the lattes here. I always brought a dollar to tip the barista because they would make a decoration on top of the foam and I was surprised each day with what I would get. TIP! Take your room’s coffee mug downstairs and have them prepare your latte in the mug. Ask for a double shot expresso. Coffee is very hot and they do not have lids. Makes transporting your beverage easier in the glass mug. They also have coffee, frozen coffee drinks, ice cream, pastries, sandwiches, and made to order crepes. Jamaican Jerk Shack: Located by the pools in front of Buccaneer Bay. The jerk chicken here was amazing. I would say it could equal or beat the famous jerk chicken at Scotchies restaurant in Jamaica. It is good without the extra sauce, but even better with (hot!). Served with buttery corn on the cob and a drink served in a fresh coconut. Only available in the afternoon starting around 12:30pm. Poolside Snack bar: SLOW, SLOW service. Simple meals such as chicken nuggets, hamburgers, nacho chips, etc. Tours Tour offerings were slightly different from online brochure offered by Palace Resorts. At the time of this review, Konoko Falls and Snorkeling tour were offered FREE – no cost/no resort credits needed. The good thing about Ocho Rios is that most of the best attractions on the island are near the resort, so you don’t lose a lot of time traveling to and from. TIP! Check the cruise ship port schedule (Cruise Port Insider – or simple google search). I recommend not scheduling tours outside the resort if a ship is in port! Below are reviews of what we did. Dunn’s River Falls (Unavailable with resort credit - $50 USD per person): HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It is the one of the top attractions on the island and usually quite busy, but it was tremendous fun climbing up a rapidly moving waterfall. You need to be somewhat agile to do this activity, but I saw young and old, and all shapes and sizes completing it. You have guides that will get you up safely. TIP! You must have water shoes. Lockers are available, but just bring yourself, water shoes, water proof phone pouch, small towel and some cash. They do a video of your group with individual shots of your family. This can be purchased with cash for $40 USD. It was worth it. Note: Konoko Falls Park, at the time of this review, was offered as a free tour. We did not do Konoko as we were told that Dunn’s was the place to go. Apparently, Konoko is smaller, but steeper waterfall. Chukka River tubing (Resort credit): This was fun – glad we did it, but we could have done without. Good for low adrenaline experience. Water was cool and refreshing, jungle was beautiful. Great guides, good photo ops, clean bathroom, bar, and restaurant at start and end of tour. TIP! Bring water shoes. Blue Hole (Unavailable with resort credit - $45 USD per person): We added this to our Chukka tour. Went to Blue Hole first. This was about a one-hour experience. You must have water shoes! Lots of fun jumping off rocks/cliffs. You start with baby jumps and work your nerve up to a 20 foot jump. The staff is very concerned with safety and fun. You will not be pressured to jump. Water is a beautiful aqua/green/blue. I read that it can be cloudy and brown after a rain shower. TIP! A video of Chukka and Blue hole was available, but we were not happy with the quality, so we did not purchase. Take your own photos, video if you can. Dolphin Swim (Resort credit): If you have never done a dolphin swim, this is the place to do it. Dolphin experience is on the resort. We did the Royal Swim which allowed us a two-dolphin experience (swim, hug, kiss, stroke). It was an approximately 40-minute experience. My boys were grinning ear to ear (even the 17 year old). You are not permitted to take your own photos and the photo disk is PRICEY! For three people, it cost $170 USD, but for us, it was worth it. The photos are wonderful and of very high quality. Mystic Mountain Sky Explorer (Resort credit + additional fee to for zipline or bobsled): The only way to the top and back down from Mystic Mountain is the sky explorer and the views are spectacular going up. The sky explorer/entrance to the park is the only thing that is included. We added the Bobsled and received two rides. Ride is about 2-5 minutes down depending if you brake or not (isn’t necessary) then back up the hill. There were other small attractions offered at no additional charge at the top including hummingbird garden, infinity pool, and waterslide, but we did not do these. Views of the bay and the Moon Palace are awesome from here. Snorkeling: Do this in the morning for the calmest seas. It appeared to get very windy each day in the afternoon. Not sure if this is a seasonal or regular situation. If you have snorkeled in other areas of the world, lower your expectations significantly. We saw lots of fish but they were small. Reef is mostly seagrass, but we did enjoy this experience and it was a free tour. WATERSPORTS Included are Hobie cat sailing rides (on your own, or with a staff member if you cannot sail – short 20-minute experience), water bicycles, kayaks, paddle board, and wind-surfing. Snorkeling in the cove is permitted and there are lots of small fish to see, but you need to bring your own, purchase, or rent. If you like to snorkel, bring your own gear. My son is an avid fisherman. He brought a collapsible fishing rod and threw in a line off the rocky shoreline on the edge of the property. Caught some pretty cool small fish. Seemed to be a hit with the local staff who appreciated a fisherman. RESORT ENTERTAINMENT The resort offers on-site entertainment each evening. We did the Michael Jackson Show which was good. I would recommend NOT sitting up front for a more authentic feel that MJ is in the house. Reggae show was good. Did not do any others. We did check out the Beach Party after dinner one night to find that it is comprised of a buffet, so if you are doing this, you may want to skip dinner. Verify this before attending since we just took a glimpse of the area and left. SPA Hydrotherapy experience was unique and massage, manicure, pedicure were what you would expect. SPA is nice and staff is very attentive. I wish I had the time to do more SPA experiences. WATER / FRESH PRODUCE / TOILETRIES As a regular visitor to Mexico, I am always wary of the drinking water and food. We did not have any issue in Jamaica. The water comes from natural springs and the hotel provides ample drinking water in plastic bottles. It is suggested to limit drinking straight from the tap, just to be safe. Had no issue with the fresh produce. However, If you have food sensitivities, it is always good to be cautious. Over the counter medicines, toiletries, and sundries are expectedly pricey. This is an island, so everything is imported. A small package of gum was $1 USD. Bring all that you think you will need and then some. Since the bathrooms are small, we brought a cheap plastic shoe rack to hang in the bathroom that kept our bath items visible and in easy reach without cluttering the counter space. SOUVENIRS As you move through Jamaica, you will basically find the same items EVERYWHERE. Good selection at resort, but a bit pricey. On Reggae Night at the resort, an array of local vendors are set up in the theater area and it is apparent they are not allowed to aggressively solicit your business. You can barter with them on price (cash only) and there was a nice selection without the hassle that you would find in the Ocho Rios craft market. Mystic Mountain also had a very nice selection at reasonable prices. We were able to get an embroidered, thick cotton adult t-shirt for only $15. If you are brave, you can check out the Craft Market in Ocho Rios (see Going off Resort). The airport has a multitude of souvenir shops at reasonable prices which really surprised me being in the airport. Guess they are squeezing the last possible dollar out of you before you depart. Blue Mountain Coffee was sold everywhere, but I could get it at my local specialty food market at home for a fraction of the price. GOING OFF PROPERTY Jamaican’s are not afraid to ask you to buy something or to offer you a service. They are quite aggressive and in your face. Going into town is a two-minute walk from the resort but be ready to be haggled the second you step foot on Main Street. We simply told those that approached us that we had been there before and knew exactly where we were going. If you don’t want to be bothered, keep walking and do not engage in conversation or respond to questions. We did not visit the local craft market as we heard too many stories of how you are worn out with the aggressive approaches and haggling. We visited JUICIE PATTIE on Main Street to have fresh, hot patties – a Jamaican fast food staple. TIP! Get the cheese pattie and put it inside the coco bread for an authentic experience. We visited SCOTCHIES on the outskirts of Ocho Rios. We took a cab, arranged by PR in the lobby. We treated our driver to dinner and he stayed and ate with us (by our invitation). Cost for transportation was $40 plus his dinner, but it was nice having a local with us off the resort property and it was great getting to know him – added to the experience. Note that the green sauce that is served with the meal is HOT, HOT, HOT!!! The day before departure, my youngest son came down with a bad ear infection. There is a nurse on property, but they will charge you nearly $1000 for a private DOCTOR to come to the resort. We had the unique experience of visiting Dr. Linton D. Francis’ office in town. We took a cab to and from to avoid local street hassle. We had to wait about an hour and paid $70 USD for the visit. He prescribed the appropriate medications and did a great job. They do take cash or credit (keep your receipt). Jamaica is a beautiful island and it was a wonderful experience at the Moon Palace! Ya man!

Pseudo Opulence- Not 5 Stars

Let’s start with the positives. The property is overall beautifully manicured. The lobby is definitely eye catching, the staff is friendly save for a couple sour-pusses. The pools were very nice. However, the devil is in the details. Our two rooms were wholly unremarkable. Very standard hotel room. Marble floors we in place instead of carpet. Not a big deal. Room service was NEVER reliable. Nothing arrived on time. They averaged a 30 minute delay beyond the promised time. We ordered 3 small bottles of Club Doda which took an hour and 40 minutes to arrive. Turndown Service usually came to the room at about 5:30 pm. A bit early if you ask me. In the room we were promised a top shelf minibar. Smirnoff is NOT top shelf anywhere that I have ever traveled across the globe. It seemed that there was either a short supply of alcohol or the just didn’t really offer it up. My wife was told in one of the restaurants that they did not have Chardonnay. What respectable resort restaurant doesn’t have Chardonnay? Regarding the restaurants... we waited on average no less than 30-40 minutes for our entrees after the order was taken. The servers were very nice and polite but had to be asked for drink refills. The food was pretty good overall but at one point or another everyone in my family had a night spent in the bathroom with upset stomachs. Overall we enjoyed the activities at the resort. Dolphin Cove was a highlight for my family. TJ and Sham were great with the Dolphins and our children. The sailing on the catamarans was fun. Kaseem was very nice to take us on our second sail. We were told that the water bikes were broken, but saw people on them a short time later. We did tip those who provided great service, but unfortunately many were inefficient and didn’t seem to care. We found the hallways to be unkept, (not vacuumed) as there was a used q-tip earswab that remained in our hallway for 3 days before being removed. See photo. Our “ocean view” left a lot to be desired. See photo. We had an outstanding view of the downtown of Ocho Rios (not what we were expecting.) We also had a sleepless night as there was an absurdly loud concert that went until 4 am. The service poolside was good. Santana was lovely and attentive, but the poolside bartender, Nigel was always grumpy and seemed to be annoyed to make the simplest of drinks. I’m talking Soda with Vodka and a splash of Pineapple. The Flowrider was a highlight for the kids. The staff there was friendly and the lines were not terribly long. Overall, they stay was okay. Not great. My children even noticed some of the deficiencies during the stay. We wanted to have a great vacation and in their eyes, they described it as good. I would describe it as okay. 3 Stars MAX. The Moon Palace Jamaica lacked the WOW factor that you would expect from a “5 Star Resort.” This is not a property that I plan to revisit and would suggest that they improve their game if they intend to say they are 5 Star.
