"Every great beach deserves a great hotel."

This was said by Laurance S. Rockefeller, who founded the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. He knew the great beach at Kauna'oa also deserved spectacular golf and exceptional dining to accompany the most exclusive and expensive resort of its day. Four decades later, following a $150 million repair and renovation, The Mauna Kea once again stands as a landmark of luxury on the Big Island's golden Kohala Coast.

Gracious guestrooms, artfully enhanced by John Hara Associates Inc. and Barry Design Associates showcase Mr. Rockefeller's signature "understated elegance" in a graceful fusion of modern features and fabulous style. The rooms have crisp, clean lines, cloud white and bold sunset colors, along with the unchanged "wow" of wonderful views from the wide lanai. New, refined furnishings and fun finishing touches are subtly supported by hi-tech bells and whistles to produce a luxury guestroom experience that is ultra-high quality and ultimately comfortable.

The "new" Mauna Kea Beach Hotel restaurants are designed with a creative combination of cultured international cuisine and fresh, local Kohala Coast ingredients prepared with "lokomaika'i" (sharing with kindness from within). With a delicious mix of steadfast tradition and new attitude, the fine dining restaurants have exciting new sounds, sights, scents, and tastes to share, whether you're barefoot on the beach or all dressed up with someplace wonderful to go.

Since 1964 the Golf Course at Mauna Kea has led the way in standards of course beauty and design, solidifying its place in Hawaii's history as one of the most scenic and favored golf courses. Avid golfers and guests of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel continue to enjoy Robert Trent Jones, Sr.'s award-winning golf course and its recent updates and beautification by Rees Jones.

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is known for its remarkable sense of place that enhances without intruding on dramatic natural surroundings. With a timeless tradition of aloha, The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel welcomes generations of guests to come and be inspired by the past, embraced by the moment, enchanted by the warm days and exciting possibilities ahead.

One of World’s most beautiful beaches

The Mauna Kea is the grande dame of north of Kona hotels. The crescent beach is spectacular and surprisingly waves were very gentle this year. Too tame for body surfing or wave jumping but great for snorkeling. On clear night, manta rays visit the north side of the bay! Service was friendly and efficient. As a very quiet week, many events were cancelled without notice. Holiday decorations were wonderful. But, the great lady is showing her age. Furniture was scuffed, fabrics frayed, drapes didn’t function, bathroom dated. None of this really matters as everything was clean but at top end prices one expects better. Still sitting on our deck watching, glass of good wine in hand, the sunset was spectacular!

This is a beautiful property with its own private beach and the added bonus of a Manta Ray sanctuary. Wherever you are on the property you are surrounded by lush vegetation, the aroma of tropical flowers, and gorgeous views. The are benches and seating around to enjoy the ocean views. Birds and butterflies are everywhere. The staff embody the "Aloha" spirit and are welcoming and gracious. Rooms are comfortable and luxurious without feeling stuffy. Balconies are a great place for morning coffee or an afternoon glass of wine. Restaurants offer fresh caught seafood and creative menus. The store sells wine, convenience items, grab and go sandwiches and snacks and espresso. I did not want to leave, EVER!

All around relaxing, beachy stay with mod cons that are lacking at its closest rival.

We make a couple of annual visits to the Big Island and have been loyal to the Mauna Lani for more than a decade, but now realize we've been fools. The room we were assigned, facing the ocean with modern beachy décor and a giant shady lanai with a direct ocean front and shade trees was beyond our expectations. Instead of hiking to the beach at ML, we grabbed only what we needed and strolled across a lawn. When we felt like an espresso we had two options a flight of stairs away, not the zero options of the other hotel. The gym was on site and facing the sea and not a bike or car ride away. There was even great snorkeling. But the best part of all was the warm, endless swimming pool that is the beach! How could we have spent year after year visiting this island and not have known about this beach? We spent hours in the water, whereas at the ML, we are always too cold to stay in (it must have something to do with currents?) There are downsides: the sit down restaurant food is overpriced, even for a resort (but it was nice to have modest options at breakfast in the Copper Bar); there should be no charge for tennis; there should be bicycles available to guests and more shade options on the beach or lawn. There is nothing romantic about Manta, especially when crowds from the luau descend to watch the actual Manta Rays and parade right past the fine dining tables. Overall, this is a place for a family vacation, not a "sexy" vacation and feels closest to the larger Maui resorts. But based on this stay we are adding this hotel to our plans for the future and can't wait to return.

The first and still classic Beach resort. Through several updates the hotel is still fantastic! The rooms are spotless and the service impeccable. Food is very good though very pricey. The grounds are meticulously maintained and a pleasure just to walk through. This is a great place for romantic escapes, couples, families, and anyone who just wants to escape the real world.

My wife and I decided to take a 3 day side trip to the big island for a stay at the Mauna Kea. We first visited the Mauna Kea in the early 1970's for their weekend brunch buffet. Subsequently, we have used the beach when renting homes in the Puako area. We had always liked the "feel" of the resort: the beach is one of the best in Hawaii; and the buildings and the artwork integrated well with the environment. We reserved a larger size, golf view room. The bathroom was extra large, including beautiful tile work on the floor. The sinks were in a separate room. And, the bathroom had its own lanai. It was very tastefully appointed, private, and with lots of space - a very nice place to relax and sleep. The beach was terrific as always. The food ranged from good to excellent. The restaurant at the golf course was fine for lunch, but it really had nothing special to offer. We particularly liked the bar. It's view opens out to the beach and we liked the food, particularly the fresh catch of the day. They also had a great singer of Hawaiian music. He was accompanied by a very good hula dancer. The entertainment was all low key, but very professional. It allowed diners to have conversation, eat, drink, and listen to the music to the degree they desired. But, the part I liked the best was the beautiful architecture of the resort. I believe it was constructed in the 1950's or the early 1960's, financed with Rockefeller dollars. The different levels open out to the ocean in a way that the tropical breezes flow through the building as visitors sit and look out over the bay. The walls of the public areas are tastefully decorated with Asian art that blends in perfectly with the surroundings. And, the public spaces are filled with comfortable seating areas that feel truly private. I mention all this because the Mauna Kea is a great place to spend a day, particularly if you want to read a book, catch up on email, or lay in the sun. I should also mention the golf course. I play a lot of golf. This course was truly a challenge. Most every green was of the tabletop variety, surrounded by sand traps. Unless you are a very good golfer, expect to spend a good part of your round in the sand. It was one of the more difficult courses I have played. Overall, the Mauna Kea was a most satisfying experience. It shows a little wear around the edges, but we preferred to view the wear as part of the character. It was a great place to relax and to soak up the tropical breezes.
