Not a 4.5 star...maybe in Cuba

Spent two weeks in the club section and the following is my opinion. Hotel: was separated into three sections which is the club section (cheap seats) the grand section (slightly less cheaper seats) and then the time share/condos. Apparently there was also different tiers in that service as well. They were allotted different services and were cordoned off on the beach so that the club and grand customers were only allowed to use a certain portion of the beach. I felt like a second class citizen as we were not given the real estate that they were. Not to mention that they were served glass on the beach (which should be a no no) and lovely looking shrimp cocktail (ok I was salivating). The hotel decided to take our umbrellas one day because the wind was too strong. Ok, no problem I get that they can become projectiles...but the timeshare/condo people were allowed to keep theirs up. Same umbrellas, same wind just in a more upscale section. I just found it really weird that there was this us and them mentality. If you want to go to an upscale resort you would go to one. I would never go back to this type of resort again where there is a different level of service. So we were in the club section and it was fine; it had a balcony and we had a direct view of the ocean. No real complaints with the room. Had plenty of hot water. Beach: Absolutely gorgeous surroundings....mountains on two sides, lots of fun waves. Walking on the beach was not that great. It was very dependant on tides. However, if you go out to the left of the hotel and walk toward the pier there is a really nice stretch of beach which is far superior to anything that we came across and we are beach walkers. Buffet: Not great unless you could get someone to make the food fresh off the grill. Very disappointed. Speciality Restaurants: I think the best was the Mexican. The others were hit and miss and some of the service was quite terrible. Note a lot of people did not get reservations...I think because the timeshare/condo owners from this hotel and the Marival Residences also get to use these restaurants and so lots of people vying for limited spots. Staff: Generally the staff were amazing especially those that were the servers, housekeepers etc. They went beyond the call of duty all the time. Some others like the check in were not always so polite. I told them I was ill when they wanted to do the time share thing. I think this is a great spot if you have kids as there were a ton of them there. The kids all seemed to be having a blast. They really should do something about the kids pool with the swim up bar...I just can't figure out why they would do that. However, the adults took over the pool most days. I don't like swim up bars anyway...cause there is no way those people can sit in a pool that long without peeing... I would not go back there as I did not feel that the level of service that was provided equaled a 4.5 star hotel. More>

A wedding in paradise

We arrived Saturday, January 16th along with 45 others in a group for a wedding. As I got out of the van from the airport, I was greeted by my entire family. I already knew the next 7 days would be amazing and I was right. There is always something to do no matter your age here. Shuffle board, ping pong, an aracade, gym, water sports and activities ran by the staff. ** Take Caution with the the shack that rents boogie boards. The man gave my nephew an already damaged board (we should have recorded that) and it was brought back with a little more wear and tea due to the red flagged waves. He next day he refused to rent boards to 12 of us because he knew we were with the "family that caused me trouble" from the day before. He was rude and mean and lost a lot of business that day. He even told my 82 year old mother no and called her a trouble maker! The staff were top notch at almost every turn but especially during the wedding. My niece got married on the beach in front of the club restaurant on Wednesday, January 20th. The level of service was amazing! Every one of the staff on that night should be commended for exemplary hospitality! The waiters were always a step ahead of all the guests, the DJ ensured he had every singe song requested we sent it and all around they all made for a wonderful evening. From front desk to concierge to the spa, we weren't greeted with smiles and hellos. The shops on site are friendly, colourful and not over priced for the most part. The Italian restaurant was the only a la crate I made it to and it was delicious!! Again, with top notch service staff! There are multiple pool areas depending on your mood. It was nice to have the option of the quiet adult only pool for a day to chill and read away from the music, while only being a short walk away from the gang. We had 5 little boys with our group and they never stopped from morning till night. Case Bella was an excellent buffet restaurant. So many choices it was hard for anyone to be disappointed. My only slightly negative comment is in regards to the bathroom toiletries provided. Only a shampoo/conditioner combo and a lotion. No shower caps, no qtips, no mouthwash. Whatever product was in that shampoo bottle was the worst product I have ever put in my hair. I am not picky or an expensive product user, but after a day in salt water, chlorine and sun....something that lets us get a comb through our hair so we can get done up for dinner would be nice. The shows!! Awesome! I've seen some awful lip sync jobs with crappy dancing during our holidays...but these shows are extremely well done! It was touch to miss some of them. I would recommend this resort to anyone! And do yourself the $20 cab and go to Bucerias for a day. You will marvel and the empty beach, the galleries at every turn and the little market. They have an art walk on Thursdays in the middle of their arts community. Go through the market, cross the bridge and fall in love with a beautiful little community. More>

the kids had a blast

This is the place we return to again and again. This year we were able to enjoy having our 2 grandchildren with my daughter and son in law as well as 2 other couples join us . The kids had the best time at the Kids Club and INSISTED they be there promptly at 9am to enjoy their time with the wonderful activity staff. This of course gave their mom and dad time alone on the beach! One of the restaurants also added a kids room so the kids could finish dinner and go there to play ...fabulous idea and we appreciated it too. Kudos to Alberto and Gerry at the Almafi Restaurant , Jacky at the VIP Mai Tai Beach Club and Jesus Alonzo at the Member registration desk.. The service from everyone is outstanding. See you next year! More>

Family oriented resort with splash park

Took the wife and kids here last April, lots of locals stayed there for holiday, never saw that before at a resort. My kids that we're 2 and 3 had a blast and would like to go back to Mexico again...ha The resort overall is nice, updated rooms, the food/restaurants are mediocre Pizza at the snack bar at night was great. Service was just OK compared to other resorts I've stayed at Lots of Aqua entertainment here, the pools we're great and grounds. Beach is big, long walks either direction. Abby is a cool guy on the beach selling oakleys and raybans. If you do decide to holiday here and lose your glasses Or want new ones Go down to the beach store and ask for Abby. I must have bought 12 pairs to hand out to my friends and family back at home. Would I come back to this resort? No. But we made fun memories for the kids and that's what matters most. More>

Great place but be aware of possible room issues
Linda7601, Abbotsford, Canada

My wife and I stayed at the Marival Resort from January 21 to 28 through Transat Holidays. We had requested a king size bed in a quiet area. What we got was the complete opposite and complete disappointment. We got a room with 2 double beds directly overlooking the pizza shack which is open until 12;00 and very noisy. On top of that the air conditioning system was extremely loud, the hot water pressure almost nil and the sink did not drain. So you are thinking, why 4 stars. We complained about not receiving the king size bed as requested and after telling us that rooms are allotted based on availability at the time of booking, we talked to the manager and he was able to get us into another room two days later. The new room was awesome and put a different perspective on our holiday from that day on. Overall we had a terrific holiday. The ala carte restaurants are great, especially Amalfi. The people are friendly and the resort is clean and well maintained (with the exception of our first room). There is lots to do at no added cost, don't miss the Mexican Night on Tuesdays. I don't know how to deal with the room issue, but if we were to go again we would have to be assured that we are getting what we asked for even if we needed to upgrade the suite. Be aware of this because we talked to another couple during our stay who had the exact same problem and they were very unhappy. More>
