Tulum beach and ruins

As we are only part way through our stay at the Bahia Principe Akumal I'll make my review of the hotel in due course. As we've had a spell of unsettled weather I'm doing a little post covering our day out to Tulum, where you'll find the ruins as well as truly excellent beaches. Tulum is only 20km from the hotel, heading south down the coast road. I chose to take a colectivo - a shared mini bus if you like. I picked up one of the hotel internal shuttle buses and got dropped off at the roundabout near the main entrance ( on the Sian Kaan side of the main road) . Walk 200 yards to the road and wait at the bus stop next to the bridge. Literally within minutes the bus arrived. Tell the driver Tulum ruins. Cost was 70 pesos for the two of us (£3). A huge saving on an organised tour. After being dropped off cross the road, you can ignore all the ticket kiosks you'll first encounter- there trying to sell you a tour. Just walk at right angles from the road - towards the coast for 1/2 mile. If walking is an issue they run tourist buses - coloured trams pulled by tractors. We bought our tickets from an electronic kiosk at the entrance - 70 pesos each - screen display gives clear prompts in many languages. Alternatively there are manned kiosks. Loved the ruins - check out YouTube for vids. The small beach below looked brilliant if a little crowded so we decided, after exiting, to walk south along the road running parallel to the coast. After passing through the yellow gates that prevent vehicle access you can take any left turn you like - they will all drop you off on a truly beautiful stretch of sand. We turned at one signposted Pescador - took us down to where a lifeguard was stationed. We didn't walk the full length of the beach but it must be a couple of miles long ! Turquoise waters and soft white sand ! Loads of vendors offering boat trips , snorkelling, paddle boards etc . Brilliant. Had a fantastic lunch in a beach side restaurant by turning right and walking a hundred yards ( and I do mean beach side , it consists of wooden tables, seats and loungers ) called Pancho Villas. Over a leisurely couple of hours we drank three bottles of beer each and consumed a delicious lunch of tacos, fajitas and fries for 1100 pesos ( £40 ). We choose to return by taxi as there were numerous available when we left the beach. The driver quoted me 300 pesos and we duly jumped in - covered the 20km return duty and back at the hotel lobby in less than 30 mins. A great day and heartily recommended.

Our room was spacious and bed very comfortable. The SaIn Ka'an is away from beach and in middle of jungle...we saw monkeys when we arrived . The shuttle trolleys are very efficient and we would leave after breakfast for the beach at Akumal and stay until 4pm. The snorkeling is fantastic with lots of different fish and water was very warm. Adult only beach section is nice.Restaurant food was very good

Book it! Then thank me later.

Wow! We had a blast this past week at the Si'an Ka'an. This was our second time and certainly won't be our last. Many of the people we had talked to said that this was their 2nd time, 4th time, we even overheard someone say it was their 11th time which says it must be a favourite amongst tourists. Firstly, the place is stunning. At first you think you won't like being so far away from the ocean, but there are trolleys that are there to pick you up every 5 minutes or so. They are very accommodating at taking you exactly where you want to go. You are located in a wonderfully maintained jungle/ garden. Loved waking up to bird song every morning. It's definitely a slower feel compared to the rest of the resorts, and the perfect quiet place when you just want to relax. Loved being able to go to any buffet, bar and A la carte restaurants at other resorts. We would highly recommending checking out Alux, Arlequin, Mikado (ask for the show table- you won't get it if you don't ask for it), Don Vito, and Don Pablo. Make sure you make your reservations as soon as you get to the resort! We recommend booking every night you are there as the buffets aren't as good. There are dress codes for these restaurants so be prepared to dress up! Beaches were beautiful. Often was there at 930 and easily could find spots under a hut. Around 11, 11:30 they started to fill up so if you want shady spots, be at the beach early! If not there plenty of other chairs in the direct sun. Yoga at 10am, Zumba at 11am and beach games to follow in the early afternoon. The instructors were super funny and made it really fun to join along. The infinity pool was by far our favourite pool to hang out at. Adult only pool and the bartenders there are really good if you want a tasty Piña colada. Entertainment at the hotel wasn't anything spectacular, we did enjoy it but preferred going to the Hacienda for karaoke, Latin dancing (there are several talented dancers there to help you out with basic salsa dancing, they will often come to the crowd and ask people to dance- make sure you say yes! You won't be disappointed.) Omar, the manager at Hacienda was very personable and really made our visits to the Hacienda a highlight of our week. Felt like a friend by the end of the week. Thanks Omar! Jorge at the Akumal buffet was amazing. We went there everyday for lunch and always was well taken care of. Thanks Jorge. The pool boys were also a ton of fun. Afternoon tequila volleyball at the Si'an K'an party pool followed by a in pool water balloon fight. Thanks Yeye, Chuck, Juan, and everyone who made it enjoyable. It was a highlight of our week. Overall, we are completely in love with this resort. We will be back. Thanks again to those who made it all the more enjoyable!

We greatly enjoyed our time at Bahia Sian Kaan! Food at the buffet was excellent with a great variety each meal/day. Thanks to all the kitchen staff who work so hard. The grounds are lovely and it is a serene location. Beach - Bring water shoes if you can...the entry to the beach is rocky but once you are in, it's nice and sandy. We enjoyed snorkelling right off the beach! Special thanks to some exceptional staff: Iris at the front desk tried to help us when the water in our room wasn't running hot. She was so gracious and kind and made it a point of following up with us the next day to see if the problem was resolved. We greatly appreciated her attentiveness and professionalism. Annabel, the hostess at the buffet, is a treasure. She brightens everyone's day with her smile and humour. Manuel and Claudia were very personal, attentive and sweet during meal service. Demetrios and Yasuri were excellent as well. These people really made our dining experience at Bahia so memorable. The shows are fantastic. We loved the Michael Jackson tribute show, the magician and the acrobatic show. Really great to see such quality shows, better than other places we have stayed for sure! Live music (Divas) and live band at Sian Kaan made for some fun evenings. One problem we encountered was that our room was lacking hot water for 2 days and was dark and dated, as compared to other resorts where we have stayed. Given the price we paid (peak season $2300 per person), we expected a better room for the price.

Fabulous stay

Absolutely loved everything about the Sian Kha'an! From the moment we checked in until checkout we were very well looked after. The reception is outdoor and creates a feeling of calm, we all know how unnecessarily stressful check in can be in a small reception rammed with people huffing and puffing behind you! The room was fairly basic but it was comfortable and clean, the aircon kept us cool and wasn't too noisy either. I'm not usually a fan of the mass 'free for all' chaos that sometimes comes with All inclusive but this was well organised and seemed to flow well. The food was of a good quality, in particular the restaurants in Sian Ka'an resort were very good. I would not hesitate in recommending the hotel and resort as a whole, it was a gorgeous way to spend 10 days!
