Ramon (Butler) was Incredible
Allie R,

This trip absolutely had its positive and negatives. I will start with the positives. Ramon Ramon was one of the butlers and my goodness was he amazing. He was the reason that the trip went from average to great. He was always there to help and ensured we had a dinner reservation every night they were offered. We were celebrating our anniversary. Ramon knew this and set a surprise in our room. After dinner we came back to the room to find rose petals both on the bed, and the floor, candles, and a cake wishing us a happy anniversary. I have never had service as exemplary as his. Anytime we had a problem, Ramon gladly took it upon himself to try to resolve the issue. If you can chose your butler, I would highly recommend him. Friendly, personable, and just overall a great person who ensures you enjoy your vacation. He gets a 10/10. Room The room was a decent size. \We had a king size bed and a balcony. The cleaners worked hard to ensure the room was clean everyday and that we were stocked on any amenities that we required. Ping Pong Table We were quite excited that they had a ping pong table. We played it quite often. Entertainment/Animation Team These guys were fantastic. Always enthusiastic, ensuring the guests haed a great time. The shows that were put on at night weren't exactly the best, but nice enough to sit at the pool with a drink and enjoy. One recommendation I would make is to have a daily schedule of entertainment instead of a little sign in the front lobby of the night entertainment. This would inform guests of the activities going on throughout the day as opposed to only at night. Drinks Drinks were good. I recommend the banana mama. Now that I've mentioned some of the pros, I will talk about some of the negatives. Food The food is not that great, and your selection is very limited. There are only three restaurants for dinner and you are only able to go to one of them (whichever one they decide to open that night). I've been to other resorts where there is food available at a restaurant or a buffet 24/7. This was not the case here. There were certain times of the day where there was no way of getting food unless you ordered from their limited room service menu. We did this our first night of arrival and nobody ever came with our order. I've also been to other resorts where food such as hamburgers and hotdogs are cooked on order, instead of sitting in a food warmer with the lid open as it gets cold. Shops The shops sucked, not much of a selection. Staff As mentioned before, Ramon was very friendly and personable, but unfortunatley that was not the case with most of the staff. A lot of them looked miserable being there and didn't even acknowledge you. I've been to other resorts where the staff is super friendly, and always say hello. This was not the case here. Due to a variety of factors my boyfriend was unable to finish the food at the French restaurant (worst of the three) because he was feeling ill. As opposed to seeing if he was okay (Ramon was the only one who seemed to care), the dining room manager gave us dirty looks, and acted as if he was annoyed and that it was an inconvenience that my boyfriend wasn't able to finish the food. One last note that we didn't like is that there is a daily game of BINGO. As mentioned above my boyfriend and I played a lot of ping pong, as there wasn't a lot to do on the resort. As we were in the middle of a game of ping pong we were kicked out by Jennifer (someone on the entertainment team) so that they could use the table for BINGO. There are plenty of places they could play their game, but we didn't appreciate that they interrupted what we were doing to play their game that could've been played anywhere. On top of that, people are putting their drinks on the ping pong table without a coaster and slowly destroying it. Overall, it's not a bad place for how cheap it is. We liked how small/not crowded it was. Don't go there for the food or service because you'll be disappointed.

Superb service and even better food!

Wow, would be the one word that comes to mind. We had a fantastic time during our 9 day stay. The food at Don Pablo, Bella Italia, and Rodizio was excellent, simply put the best food in the Caribbean. All the meals at the restaurants were presented with pride and the quality matched restaurants back home. The buffet was equally good with great variety. The service we received from Jeninson at the main bar was above reproach, he took great care of us and his soft sense of humour was appreciated. The morning ice coffees with Baileys he made were superb and hit the spot perfectly. Felix, Maria and Wendy in the dining room were top notch servers who took care of every detail and delivered service I could only wish for back home. The facility is immaculate, the grounds crew and cleaning staff are working hard to ensure everything is in it’s place and well kept. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable, the bed is on the hard side but both of us like that. The million dollar view from the balcony overlooking the beach immediately below is worth the stay alone. All in all this is the best resort we have stayed in Caribbean and we have stayed at numerous across the islands. The resort is small, 150 rooms but there is always room around the pool and along the beach. The small resort allows you to get to know other guests and staff which we found nice. If you are looking for a romantic vacation this is a great choice. The spa services were also great, the couples massage was very nice. 5 out of 5 stars.

Just the Vacation we Needed

I booked this vacation as a Christmas present for my wife, and our first time anywhere without the kids in 3 years. First off let me say that you will not be disappointed. The resort is beautiful, the food was wonderful and the staff were fantastic. This is our second time to Samana and we will probably never venture anywhere else in the Dominican Republic. We were a little late arriving, after spending all our day travelling (thanks Air Canada cattle... I mean Air Canada Rouge) but the moment we set foot on the resort we were treated wonderfully. The check in was quick and efficient, and our room was clean, spacious and had a great water view of Cayo Levantado. The staff were helpful, courteous, and great to be around, and they didn't laugh too much at my spanish. The food was very good with different theme nights. We did the ala carte thing and enjoyed the Brazilian steak house the best. However, if you want to stick to the buffet that's just as good. They have some sort of master choclatiere (sp?) on staff, and the chocolates and desserts were to die for. Also, don't book anything on Thursday Night as that is the Seafood Extravaganza, which didn't disappoint. We spent all of our time on the beach, which is a little wavy as it is facing the trade winds. We never had trouble getting a beach chair and the bartenders on the beach made the best pina colada I have ever had. The pool is not large, however it is never crowded. There are also cabanas to relax under and catch the sun, but you better get there a little earlier as they are in demand. We took our complimentary trip to Cayo Levantado and Playa Bacardi. We had stayed at Cayo Levantado before and loved the beach so wanted to go back. There are lots of vendors there and if you want souvenirs to take home this is the best place for selection and bargaining. Remember that in the DR everything is subject to negotiation, and if they get pissed at you but still sell it to you you did pretty good. We coughed up our 5 bucks for a beach chair without any complaint and enjoyed some time before we returned to the mainland for a late lunch. We didn't do any excursions this time as we felt our time and money would be better spent touring Samana. You can book a cab for $40 american (round trip) and they will stay with you while you are in town. We shared a cab with two women from Halifax so this cut down on the price. Our cab driver dropped us off on the main street and we met up with a local tour guide named Miguel. He took us on a walking tour of Samana and we saw many sights we would never have seen on an "excursion". He had this great policy of "pay what you think it was worth, but please buy something from my cousins shop". So for $30 dollars US we got to see a side of Samana you may not get. There is a market where we got our cacao fresh (in brick form no less) and he even got a friend of his to take us in his motor-scooter (or whatever they call it) up to the top of Samana for pictures. The best part of the tour was going to the "grocery store". The prices there are the same as any local would pay so we loaded up on vanilla, rum, and cinnamon for way less than what would be had on the resort or the duty free. I highly recommend taking time to see the town, you won't be disappointed. The resort is small and intimate, and if you are looking for a wild "set your hair on fire" kind of time you are out of luck. However, if you want to relax, be pampered, and not worry about stuff this is the place to go. We will definitely be back, sans kids as it is adult only, and hopefully we can stay longer. 7 days is too short.

The good and bad

First off, there is NO watersports at the resort. No dive shop, no snorkeling, no kayaks, nothing. There is a free shuttle to an offshore island that allows you to go snorkeling if you have your own equipment. The beach is very small, and quite rough water most of the time. It is maybe 1/4 mile long, so you can walk it in 5 minutes. The property itself is very small with little garden area. The garden areas that are there are well maintained. There is no sidewalk in front of the property, so walking is quite dangerous. Now to the good. The resort is well maintained, and everyone that works there is wonderful. They do not all speak English well though, if that matters to you. Nell and the entertainment crew are great. There is free yoga and stretching classes, as well as professional help in the gym. The food is great, with plenty of shrimp and seafood at the buffet restaurant. The Italian was only open 1 day, so did not try that. My favorite was the Brazilian restaurant with all the meat you can eat! Breakfast is the normal omelets etc. Overall, this resort is for people who like to lay in the sun, eat and drink good booze and food, and do not want any water sports. If you are from the United States, and wish to go to Samana, check into flying to Canada and catching a direct flight to Samana airport. It is only about 1/2 hour from the resorts, instead of a 3 hour bus ride from Santo Domingo.

Just returned from a fantastic week at this resort. From the moment we arrived everyone made us feel like family. Check in was a breeze and greeted us with a cold towel and great drink. We were assigned Ramon as our butler and he was the best ever. Always greeted us with a smile and asked if there was anything else we needed. He was always asked if we needed anything. The beach was small but beautiful. It never felt crowded and we never had a problem finding a place of our own. Wilfredo, the beach bartender..( I believe that was his name ) was the fantastic! Always remembered our drink of choice and always greeted us in the am with a smile and a wave as we walked the beach. Our sea view room was beautiful. The food was wonderful never had a bad meal. I wanted to mention a couple of servers who stood out which was Wendy, Arleney and Felix. They always went above and beyond. We did take a couple of tours to Bacardi Island and El Rincon beach which are a must do !! This is a must do resort and we cant wait to return. I special mention to Ramon at the pool bar ,Ramondo and Arleney at the lobby bar. It is a beautiful place!! Can't wait to return...
