We just returned from a weeks holiday at the Luxury Bahia Principe Esmerelda Don Pablo Collection. This was our first and last visit to this resort. Having previously stayed at the Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado Don Pablo in Samana, we expected the same level of service, professionalism and quality that we experienced from their sister property in Samana. Unfortunately, the Esmerelda did not even come close.
While the Esmerelda is one of the smaller resorts on the Bahia Principe property (there are five resorts in total), it is still very much a part of the larger complex. There are 3,600 rooms in total (including all 5 resorts). This resort is huge and so are the crowds.
We were a party of four and had booked two rooms. Our room had a constant sewer like odor the week we were there. Since the resort was full and we spent most of our time at the beach, we didn't make an issue of it. One of our lamps was broken and the remote control for the TV didn't work. Some of these issues may seem minor, but they do add up. The other room also had a bad odor (mouldy, musty smell) and again broken light fixtures. Bathroom floors are marble and extremely slippery when wet. This is an accident waiting to happen. Beds are very firm, actually they are rock hard. Shower was big with good pressure.
Rooms were cleaned on time with the exception of one day when at 5:00 our room still hadn't been done.
The Mini fridge was stocked daily, however there were two days that they did not stock the fridges in both rooms with the mini alcohol bottles.
The hallways are carpeted and are in need of replacement as they are old and stained. There are three levels and no elevators here, so if you have difficulty with stairs I would recommend staying on the first or second floors. There is only one staircase and it is in the middle of the hallway. If your room is at the end of the hallway and there is an emergency, you would have to jump from your balcony to exit. Note: There were NO fire extinguishers on our floor!
This was our second time visiting Punta Cana and it was the beach we came back for. The last time we visited, the beach was very nice with clear water and no seaweed. Unfortunately, that was not the case this time. Something has happened to the beaches in Punta Cana and there is a tremendous amount of seaweed that washes ashore all day long. Every morning the workers are out there working tirelessly trying to clean it up, but it really is in vain. They can't keep up with it as there is so much. This is not the hotels fault, but something to be aware of.
You get one beach towel/day/person. You are responsible to pay for it if you lose it. Most days when we exchanged our towels at the end of the day for clean ones, they were clean. There was one day where it looked like he gave us dirty towels as they were quite stained. Could have been a mix up, but we asked to exchange them again for clean ones.
Having stayed at many resorts over the years, we are quite familiar with the towel game of reserving your chairs/umbrellas for the beach and pool areas. What shocked us was how early people were getting up on the morning to "reserve" their spots. They were out there starting at 5:30 a.m.! Eventhough there is a sign posted on the umbrellas that reserving chairs is not permitted, no one from the resort ever enforced it. Another annoyance was the constant barrage of beach vendors. While there was a security guard, he did nothing about it. However all you had to say was no thank you and they left you alone, but this went on all day long.
The beach was very busy and crowded. It should also be noted that there were guests from the neighbouring RIU hotel and from other Bahia resorts using the Esmerelda beach and amenities. Again, no one seemed to do anything about it.
We never used the pools as they were always crowded. One evening, while the pool lights were on, you could see the sunscreen slick on the water along with dead skin...
We took the advice of other members on TA and prebooked our a la carte dinners in advance. Good thing we did as I heard complaints from other guests who had been trying all week to get their reservations but were told the restaurants were fully booked for the entire week. However, when we dined at the a la cartes, there were quite a few empty tables.
Our first dinner & breakfast we ate at the Jazmin Buffet. Poor selection of foods in general. There were no mangoes or bananas the days we had breakfast there. Overall very limited selection of food. Service was hit and miss in ALL the restaurants, didn't matter if you tipped or not (we always did). Better buffet was the Los Gerainos at the back of the resort. NOTE: While eating at the Jazmin Buffet, we saw cockroaches near the entrance to the kitchen. These were not your typical tropical beach bugs, these were cockroaches! I heard some guests mention they also had them in their rooms.
Since the food at the Esmerelda buffets was lacking, we thought we would have lunch one day at the Ambar buffet restaurant. Our server was Alexander and he was very friendly and attentive to our needs. We went back the following day for lunch and we were told by a Guest Services Rep that guests from the Esmerelda were not permitted to eat at the Ambar. I asked him to verify that because we were told guests from the Esmerelda could eat at the Ambar. This was apparently the information he received from the Manager & the Supervisor of the Ambar Buffet. They need to train their staff better because when we questioned this, their response was condesending and unprofessional.
During our stay, there was a ban on Lobsters. The ban affects all of the DR and is due to overfishing. If you are hoping to eat lobster, be prepared to get shrimp instead.
We found the drinks from the beach bar were watered down. The pool bar drinks were better. The best drinks were in the Lobby, but when we asked for a premium brand, we were told it was extra $$.
This was the only area I would give this resort a 5*. The groundskeepers are to be commended for doing an excellent job. The gardens and grounds are well kept and maintained.
While for the most part they were fine, we did experience two rides that were unacceptable. One night we made dinner reservations at the Ambar Don Pablo Gourmet restaurant. Our reservation was for 7:30. We left our room at 7:20 and since the Ambar is only a 5-10 minute walk, we thought to be safe we should take the bus to the Ambar. When the bus came, we asked the driver if he was going to the Ambar and he said yes. We got onboard, only to end up at the Punta Cana. We asked the driver again if he was going to the Ambar. He looked surprised and started talking to another driver. We were then asked to follow our initial driver on foot to the Turquesa Resort! The time was now 8:00 pm and we were 1/2 hour late for our dinner reservation. Finally another bus drove us to the Ambar. Fortunately, we were still able to enjoy our dinner that night, but the stress of getting there was not what one would expect in a 5* resort. There was another couple on our bus who were trying to get to the Makaido Japanese restaurant and were having the same problems.
On another occasion, our driver was more interested in chatting up the young girl sitting behind him, then keeping his eyes on the road. His driving was reckless and he almost hit a guest.
With the exception of Cuba, we are used to having high speed wifi in our rooms at no additional charge. Having to leave our room every night to go to the Lobby with hundreds of other guests and scramble for a seat just to get on wifi was ridiculous. Having high speed wifi in your room should be available to all guests at no additional charge.
Check out was fast and the staff were friendly. No problems there. However the transportation of guests back to the airport was a different matter.
It was disorganized and chaotic to say the least. Our baggage was stored on the coach and then we had to wait to board the bus. When it came time for us to board, we were told that there were only two seats available. Since our bags were already loaded, we decided that two of us would go on the bus and the other two would take the next bus. When I boarded the bus and started to make my way to the back, there were actually four seats available. Too late to do anything as the bus was now on his way.
When we arrived at the airport and got our baggage, we had to wait another 45 minutes for the next bus to arrive. The bus was late because there was an accident back at the hotel. Another coach got too close and took the side mirror off and they had to repair it before it could leave the hotel.
Considering the amount of money we paid, we expected much more from the Esmerelda. This was the first holiday I was actually looking forward to getting home.

Hotel had everything you could wish for... However it was best for families or large weddings. Went with a group of friends, but the resort doesn't really fit young people who would like exploring the country - miles anyway from the city (you have to get a cab). It was also very hard for us as very few people spoke English so it was hard to organise transportation to other islands. A few great excursions on offer like parasailing and dune bugging, but again great if you're going with your family or a wedding (a lot of weddings are hosted there)

Our junior suite was stunning and spotlessly clean. The bed was firm and comfortable, and the suite had a standing shower with good pressure and a separate whirlpool bath. The food was delicious, with a great variety to choose from every day. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The resort beach is beautiful with plenty of chairs and umbrellas for guests. Hotel security keeps vendors off the beach. It was a wonderfully relaxing vacation, and we would definitely visit again!

We've just returned from a two week holiday/wedding party to the Esmerelda with a whopping party of twenty people. First things first we travelled from Manchester airport in England in a around nine hour flight. The new private airport we landed at in Punta Cana was a little disorganised and took us around 30 minutes to actually work out what we were doing with the help of some rather unhelpful Thomas Cook representatives. Eventually after a short bus ride to the complex we were taken to the main reception at the Punta Cana section before being shuttled by little trains to our actual complex at the Esmerelda. Check in was smooth enough although no one actually showed us to our rooms which is a little daunting when arriving at a new complex but hey ho. The hotel itself looked immaculate on arrival beautiful green tropical grounds with large white buildings greeted us. Our room was quite close to the main building on the first floor which faces a small garden area. The room itself was really nice, containing two double beds , a couch bed and a lot of space to sit around. The bathroom looked splendid apart from the toilet door not being frosted like the other rooms so quite a problem if you had the bathroom curtains open that faced straight onto the balcony, not something our adjacent neighbours would like to see I imagine. The staff at the hotel were first class, really pleasant and helpful especially the head bellboy and pool barstaff. Our room was cleaned twice a day and the free mini bar was always stocked up with drinks and crisps. The food was very good, between the entire complex there was specialist restaurant ta you could make reservations at including Italian,Mexican, Grill, Japanese and another style. Entertainment on the night was very hit and miss in the actual hotel but there was the option of going upto the main square for later, lively shenanigans. Pool areas were great and the swim up bars a very nice touch, however due to carious reasons the pool was closed for a few hours every dinner time due to either wrong chemical mixtures or human faeces. Our biggest bug bear was with the actual wedding planners/organisers. Not only had arrangements been originally made to be wed inside the grounds which our friends where then told wasn't possible and had to be moved to the beach area which was public and surrounded by around 100 people watching and taking pictures but this is the bit that really got us... AFTER THE WEDDING THE PLANNER LEFT ALL OF US INCLUDING THE BRIDE STRANDED AROUND 15 MINUTE WALK BACK TO OUT HOTEL, NO EXPLANATIONS WERE OFFERED OTHER THAN THATS NOT DOWN TO US TO PROVIDE TRANSPORT!!???, after spending the amount of money 20 of us had and it was someone's wedding day, it was completely unacceptable! All in all for a holiday it was a great holiday, if you are thinking of getting married here, be very wary as it's a very clearly organised money making scheme by the hotel management.
