From the moment we stepped off the airplane, everyone from D.R. was wonderful. The people at the airport were so efficient and many spoke English fluently. Rep from Blue led us directly to our Shuttle past the long lines of people waiting for their shuttles. We were greeted at the Bahia like Royalty. It was literally minutes from the time we entered the Bahia Principe entrance and we were at the beautiful Esmaralda. Our baggage was immediately taken care of worry and hassle free. we were offered a drink at our arrival and the front desk couldnt have been more warming and inviting. Our room was beyond our expectations. Impeccably clean and very spacious, not your typical hotel room, a nice seating area with sofa and two chairs with a small table, nice sized flat screen tv. I happen to like a firm mattress, so no complaints there. The bathroom was very large with comparmentalized toilet area and shower for privacy. We were in building 91 third floor, which was a right next to the beach and pool. Very quiet, never heard a thing at night, and room kept cool at all times with card kept inserted in air conditioning control. conveniently located saftey box in room at no charge. The food was good, the snack bar on the beach was excellent. Excellent service there every day. All waiters very kind and efficient. One of our favorites was the Takura, the Japanese restaurant located in the Esmaralda Resort. Excellent Buffet, service , and presentation. Also the Makia Hubachi japanese Restaurant was excellent. Our favorite for breakfast was the Geranium room which is located behind the first pool, it has outdoor dining and lower key than the Jazmine breakfast buffet, not as loud. Those two stand out as my favorite. The Beach was gorgeous, never a problem finding a chair. Plenty to go around, contrary to many complaints I have seen. You may not always get a papai early in the morning, but if not, be patient and by afternoon one always eventually openened up. Usually a waiter on the beach to get a drink, if not, the beach bar is located right on beach just steps away. There is a bar everywhere you go, The shops are approx. a mile and 1/2 down the beach, a nice walk and a gentle no thanks goes a long way if not interested in their offerings. we did purchase some jewelry for quite a good price, stay firm with your price and you will be happy with your finds. We went on the all day Catalina Island Excursion, snorkleing, lunch with a fresh lobster offering, which we had and was amazing, swimming, We loved Punta Cana, and will be back. I actually cried in the gift shop as I was leaving to go home and the girl gave me a big hug and said come back and bring your family! I was so touched by the Dominicans, sweet and truly genuine.

We booked a week at the Luxury Bahia Principe Esmeralda Don Pablo Collection for my daughter's Spring Break vacation this year. The rooms are nice at this resort, but there are only a handful of rooms that have a side beach view. The resort is huge with up to five Don Pablo resorts located on the property. Esmeralda is family friendly and is listed as the highest quality all-inclusive resort on the property.
The majority of people we spoke to were repeat Don Pablo Resort patrons or first time all-inclusive travelers. The staff is fabulous and make each day special by providing excellent service during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would like to thank Ricardo, Ariel, Nicolas, and Augustus who made our buffet dining extremely enjoyable. And I would like to say the buffet food is the best buffet food you can possibly have at a resort. I would also like to thank Ramon, who made sure the daily battle of being out of clean towels at the pool, was a humorous situation. Juan at the pool bar also did a great job, and Maxim in the main lobby bar was always ready to serve.
Now I must address a major issue at this resort that is no fault of any of the employees, but a major flaw in the business model and management of the hotel. We arrived on a Friday around 3:30 pm., checked in and were told there was no food available on the property, other than room service. To try to get a 9 year old child to sit in the room to order room service was impossible, so the only option was a can of chips sold at the pool stand for $5.00.
Now to the negative, and I must say this is an absolute first for my family. We have traveled to many islands and stayed at a lot of all-inclusive resorts from Jamaica, Punta Cana, and Mexico, but have never been faced with this situation. After being told there were no reservation available for dinner the night of arrival, I returned to the front area Saturday morning to make reservations for our 7 day stay at the resort. I was shocked to hear there was nothing available Saturday - Tuesday that week . I managed to make a reservation for dinner for Wednesday and Thursday for the entire week of our stay. We managed to get into some of the restaurants "unconventionally" and to my shock, the restaurants were not full. We dinned at several restaurants that we were told were booked, and while there between 6:00 pm. - 8:00 pm. the restaurants were at 30% - 50% capacity.
We spoke to a lot of people staying at the resort and everyone was dealing with the same situation. The guest who booked ahead on line, were able to book 4 restaurants on line but were told only 3 reservations could be accepted for those who did not book on line prior to arrival. We spoke to other guest who were able to get into a limited number of restaurants, though not through the normal process, and the consensus was the restaurants were not full. At one particular restaurant we got into around 6:45 p.m., the doors were locked and the staff had to unlock the front door to let us in. We then found only about 5 tables being served in the restaurant.
My family have stayed at a lot of very nice all-inclusive resorts and this was by far the most bizarre experience I've ever had. I corresponded with a management team member at the resort via email when we returned, and was told there was a computer glitch at the hotel that week which created problems with their dinner reservation system. I'm not sure how to end this review other than to say this was a very bizarre experience! And to strongly suggest to others to set up an account on line and make your dinner reservations before arrival, or expect to be forced to dine at buffets during your stay at this "Luxury" resort.
Dont know how it's rated as 5*.....

We have just come back from our 11 night gateway to Punta Cana. This hotel is meant to be 5* which means there should be no complaints however our experience was far from 5*.
1st of all I would like to start with something that practically ruined my pool time! Every morning they bring snakes, monkeys, parrots, lizards etc? round the pool to take pictures with! They literally walk around with these animals while you?re lying on your lounger. Now if anyone has a phobia like me of snakes this is not something I need on a holiday! I literally had nightmares over it and was avoiding sunbathing each morning. I know lot of people like animals and would like pictures with them but I didn?t book my 5* holiday to be disturbed by a snake or a lizard! I will go to zoo for that!! If hotel wishes to make money so be it but they can have a special isolated place for this and not just walk around with a snake wrapped around their arms. Disgusting!
2nd of all food needs to be seriously looked at! It is consistently warm or cold food everywhere you go! It?s actually amazing how they manage this! Microwave was our life saver at one of the buffets!
A la Carte restaurants? well it?s only A la carte for the main course; the rest of it is basically a buffet! Menus are very basic and food is nothing special despite the fact that you need to book it at least week in advance to get into this restaurants. Please note none of this are 5* but below 3 mentioned restaurants were best of the bunch.
Garden Grill ? one of the best ones there, steak/burgers are decent and you can ask for a hot plate
BBQ grill ? again one of the best one there, meat is cooked on the grill and its fresh, buffet is acceptable too
Takara ? we were pleasantly surprised with this, salmon was very nicely cooked
Bella Italia ? Disgusting! Nothing more to say, should be closed down it was that bad!
Santa Fe Mexican ? Disgusting! We actually walked out of this one.
Jasmine Buffet ? again everything very cold with terrible service, literally ate pasta and bread every day.
Buffet near the 97 block ? the one with the microwave, one of the better buffets and staff and service was very good there. But food poor and warm again.
3 ? WIFI!!! We live in 21st century and if you call yourselves 5* hotel this should be provided! But no, you only get this in the lobby and very poor WIFI! When you walk in the lobby you think you are at an internet café, everyone is on their devices using internet! Just wrong! You literally can?t even stand next to the lobby to get internet you have to be inside! If it?s not provided in the room it should at least be provided around the hotel! Very poor!
4 ? Entertainment is non-existent really apart from the Saxophone player he?s good, but unless you go to Punta Cana hotel and watch their poor entertainment there isn?t much going on.
5 ? Drinks are very poor; you can get actual whisky, baileys etc. but only within your resort. Every time we went to Punta Cana we got cheap Whisky and cheap drinks even though it is all inclusive and have access to all 5 hotels within the resort. Water?. Only in plastic cups, impossible to get bottled water, really annoying! Soft drinks? well? not fresh at all and coke and Pepsi tastes nothing like the actual drink! Again to 5*.
6- Rooms lovely and spacious but can be quite noise, we were in block 97 ground floor and was very noise. Our bathroom door also got jammed 3 times! Literally had no access. And even though it was opened every time nothing was done about it. 3rd time we had to wait for someone to come out and open the door for nearly an hr! Not good when you have 8yr old wanting to use the bathroom. Minibar was not very cold and if you drunk all your drinks in one day you had to pay to get it refilled or wait till the following morning. Although alcohol was never actually refilled.
The hotel itself and the grounds are very well kept and maintained, it does look like 5* until you experience all of the above. Staff are helpful (apart from the girl on reception and staff who is supposed to help you to secure restaurants, also privilege staff are very annoying and keep pestering) other than that everyone else is lovely and helpful. Carlos in particular was our life saver!
We obviously will not be going back this hotel but it does have a potential to be really amazing hotel. In my opinion, at the moment it?s a 3* and far from 5*!

We went to this resort from April 6-13th 2015. We were a party of 7 with 4 adults and 3 kids. We sent our requests to the hotel for room placement and dinner reservations before we left and they accommodated.
The proximity to the beach is great. The hotel grounds are beautiful!
Everything is very clean! Food was great! This Grand Bahia complex is huge. Having the buffet, lobby, pool and beach so close at the Esmeralda made the trip very relaxing. The kids waterpark was a great bonus. There was always palapas on the beach for shade, but harder to get by the poolside. The animation team and activities were limited compared to other resorts we have been to. The Esmeralda is more of a relaxing hotel then a party hotel... which was nice!
The only disappointment was the seaweed in the ocean. The hotel cleaned it up every day, but we have been to Punta Cana a few times before and never had seaweed in the water. Not sure if it?s the location of the hotel. We walked down towards the Royalton and the water was crystal clear.
A great resort overall!

I've been to Dominican Republic twice before and had no intention on returning. My past experience was poor at best. But I was going with just my 7 year old daughter, wanted an all-inclusive vacation and Dominican Republic had lots of options. I picked Esmeralda for two reasons - size (I do not like huge resorts) and water park for the kids. This was the best all-inclusive resort experience I've had so far. The resort is pretty new, build in 2009. Rooms are large and nice. The grounds are pretty and very well planned out. Everything is close - two large pools, two buffets, beach with LOTS of palapas. The beach is a 5 min walk from the furthest point of the resort. No need to get up early to grab a spot under the palapa - we were there during spring break and at 9 am you could still have your pick. The food: we didn't go to any of the restaurants, so can't comment. Buffet had good variety, although if you only eat at the buffet you will get tired of it. But - chicken, fish, spaghetti, french fries - were the best ever!!! Plenty vegetarian options. Excellent choice of fruits and large selection of fresh fruit juices for breakfast. The only thing they do not do well is beef. Overall, I enjoyed every meal. And I am spoiled, I work for a company that is almost like an all-inclusive, but without the alcohol :). During the day there was plenty entertainment. Yoga on the beach, dancing and rhythmic exercise by the ocean and by the pool, volleyball. The guy who led all activities was awesome. If you are with kids and they get tired of the pool and beach, you can take a shuttle to the water park. And you should because it is great. The sea is not calm but still very enjoyable.
It is a small resort, but part of a huge complex. So during the day you get the comfort of proximity and closeness and less people. And at night you take a shuttle to this huge "town", the main area of the Bahia complex. There is a large theatre that has excellent shows. They have two showtimes, for early dinners and late. There is a huge plaza with another theatre for late night entertainment, casino, disco and shops. Two huge lobbies with their own bars, live music, hang out spots.
Just like it is with anything, you can always find things to complain about. My biggest complaint would be about keeping the area around the pool clean during the day. Waiters run around bringing you drinks, but for some reason they do not pick up empty cups left around the pool. And by late afternoon it gets pretty disgusting. I complained, can't say anyone acted on it. So, in few days, I just stopped noticing it. One night we were coming back past 10 pm and saw how they clean the grounds, especially by the pool. The plates are probably less clean. Just a shame they do not make the same effort during the day.
In summary, great hotel, great vacation. I would definitely come back.
