This is a great architectural and engineering marvel. Very clean and comfortable. The landscape is immaculate. It is near to the beach and very clean area. The pool is sparkling clean. But when you consider the human component and food into the equation, this is a 3,5 to 4 stars hotel. The food is at most mediocre and even though there are several buffet and a la carte restaurants they are pretty much the same staff: cold and uninviting type of food. Even though most of staff in contact with the guest is courteous a significant fraction is rude, poorly trained, unhappy, overworked and possibly underpaid. This is a pure reflection of the management. If you read the trip advisor reviews, there is a gradual decrease in the quality of this resort over the past few years. The most shocking scene that I witnessed while at the Bahia Esmeralda was the main pool being closed after someone vomited at the pool. Vomite has no bacteria and has it is acid. It is harmless besides the visual aspect. But dozens of toddlers were in the pool with only disposible diapers that leaks and they are highly non hygenical. Now figure this out!

If you want peace and quiet - find another hotel. Power went out frequently and at one point, set off the fire alarm in the hallway of Building 91. It was 5:30 am, and the maintenance staff were unable to turn it off - not good. Very noisy hotel, very busy beach and pool. No way to find shade at the pool because everyone reserves seats. Head to beach - but be prepared for the crowds. Food was mediocre. Staff on the other hand were all very pleasant and kind.

HORRIBLE Customer Service

Nov 18 2017
We had a trip planned through apple vacations since July 2017. We arrived at Esmeralda Principale 11/10/17 we attempted to check in with the front desk and they told us that our rooms were not available. The front desk person advised us to go have dinner and once we finish with dinner our rooms would be ready, being that we had a long flight we agreed to have dinner. Once we finished with dinner we went to the front desk and they said our rooms were ready. Now we requested to have the rooms connecting but they said they were unavailable. We are taken to our rooms which were on the same floor just accross the hallway from each other. We finally get settled in and we see roaches on the wall and so we attempted to pull out the dresser and there was dead roaches in the back. I attempted to grab a soda out of the refrigerator and it was hot and next thing I know another bug came out of the refrigerator. I go to take a selfie and the mirror is dirty and then I went in the bathroom and the tub has papers inside of it. First thing we do is call the front desk and we spoke to a manager Oscar and he kept on telling us he will fix the issue. So we were under the impression that he was going to come to the room and see what we were talking about. No instead he sends the bell boy (Emmanual) to our room to help move our stuff. Emmanuel was the nicest and most generous person at this resort. We move to another room and this time the rooms connect which is what we requested from the beginning. Only this time one room has a queen sized bed and they put a pull out bed next to it. Im very upset only because thats not what I paid for. What I paid to sleep in was a full sized bed. The next day we called the front desk and told them the situation and they kept referring that we contact apple because they couldn’t accommodate with our request. They move us for the 3rd time to two rooms with full sized beds but the rooms are not connecting. They made us wait till 2:00pm. I really think its unfair that we had to move for a whole day because they couldn’t accommodate with our room request. We would like to know how will apple acclimate for our time loss? Please see the pictures below as proof that this place is not a 5 star hotel it can’t be your reviews online were false and something needs to be done to fix this. We paid too much money for this trip to go as bad as it did. We spoke to the front desk and we were told that the rooms only come with King and that double beds were a special request and we are not Guaranteed a double bed. When we booked our trip we were given the option of to double beds and we were never told that double beds were a special request. If this request was known by Apple when we book we should have been offered four separate room with king beds we are not couples we are friends they automatically thought we were together which was totally wrong you never assume you should just ask. We also lost a day and a half of our trip trying to get settled in our room. Compensation is needed for the horrible experience we had and also I will be taking this up with the better Business Bureau along with my request to Apple Vacations.

Dirty steps and floors in our building. Cracked and chipped floor tiles in the hallways and on the stairs. Moldy tile grout in the bathroom. Tub and shower surrounds need re-caulked. Saw cockroaches twice in our building and twice in the Maiko Japanese restaurant. It appears the have put all of their money into building Ambar Green and Fantasia and let the rest of the resort go.

Uncomfortable and Food Poisoned

This is nowhere 5 star resort. The beds are hard as rocks, the maids try to enter your room with the do not disturb sign on the door, and my wife had food poisoning and was very sick for 3 days. Way too man kids. Over 200 kids to be exact. Entertainment is awful. Overall this place ruined our honeymoon.

Staff was great. It is a very large resort, but the Esmerelda property is closest to the beach. There is a tram that runs throughout on a regular basis if you want to go to restaurants on the other properties or to the village resort area. Only complaint is you have to get up early (630/7 am) to put towels down if you want a decent spot around the pools or beach. Not much the hotel can do about that. Overall we had a great time.

Too much noise
DEBORAH E.
Jun 17 2017
Our room was directly behind the stage...yes, directly behind the stage. the noise was terrible. There was no rest or relaxation, in our room, during the evening hours. I cannot believe they would consider giving people this room. We asked for a change but were told there was a room way in the back...long way from beach etc. No one was at all concerned about our discomfort. The staff did not care at all. It was as though giving us this room was a big joke to the staff.

The worst vacation that I have ever taken

When we first arrived they told us that our reservation was cancelled and they did not have our name in the system. We waited around for 3 hours in the lobby (Sweating as we had on long pants), Finally I had the ask for the manager that could barley could understand English or even speak it. One of the guest had to help me speak to them since they were fluent in Spanish and English. After fighting with them for another 45 mins we finally were able to get into a room & were told we would have to move the next day. (which I threw a huge stink over & they left us alone) "I even provided all our travel documents." The staff was not friendly what so ever & was always looking for a hand out, they would even wait by you with there hand out. The room was never restocked,(mini bar, towels, soap,ect..) drinks that we had the night before were not even thrown away. We had dirty sheets with blood stains on them one night and had to have the house keeping change them. Trying to get the house keeping to do any of that was not fun neither, they did not know any English. They even walked into our room one afternoon as we where changing getting ready for the pool after our room was already cleaned. The restaurants had you on a time limit even though it took them for ever to bring your food out (I did not finish one meal), they told us that we had to leave because the next reservation was about to arrive. I have never heard of that in my life it was horrible. The buffet would open at 12:30 and close @ 3:30 for lunch, if you arrived at 3:00 good luck getting drinks or even your plates picked up, plus the food was cold and they did not refill it. Pool bar & wait staff (No English) 2 persons the whole week. The one lady would walk around and try to refill your drink every 1.5 hours the bartender was so overwhelmed with all the orders. The beer was luke warm & hardly and ice if any in the mixed drinks, try and get a frozen drink was a joke they never had any ice. The beach was nasty with all the seaweed or what ever it was. They never handed us any information for anything going on in the resort, they had entertainment 1 night which was our last night. The Apple vacation guide was never around & when you did find him he was short with you and never really answered your questions, unless you wanted to book a trip with him ( he was way over priced & wanted cash). He even told us the wrong pick up time to catch our flight back.

Loved the Bahia Principae Esmeralda BUT.....to to to Way to many kids!! They were at the swim up bar in adult quieter pool. Fantasia behind our hotel is a child friendly hotel and they took over the beach and our pools. Disappointed but still had a great time. Food excellent!!! Will not be back unfortunately 😟. Entertainment fair. Bars extremely small seating 6 at some to 12 others could not ever get a seat to sit. Boring... had to sit with the other loud tables.

Resort overall was nice. Clean and spacious room. Beach was popular but beautiful. Entertainment was fun. Only disappointment was the food. We were unable to get in to many restaurants despite trying to make reservations our first day there. 2 of the 3 buffets we are at were not too good and room service took over an hour both times. Room service food options were also limited to not many options. Overall good experience with staff but the lack of good food would prevent us from going back

I am not sure I would return to this resort we traveled with 4 my husband and I were taken to our room and shown all the intricacies of the hotel room our son was left to search for his own room with no assistance he was a first time traveler. Most of the restaurant staff roamed around not quite sure of their role we often had to ask multiple times for water or coffee. The Apple rep was friendly but gave us inaccurate information he told us our excursion included a massage of 40 minutes it was 15 minutes, he told us that the Apple Welcome dinner was on the beach but failed to tell us that we needed to meet in the lobby to be shuttled to a beach destination much further from where we were staying. When we discovered this from the lobby manager this manager tried to get us a shuttle to the beach but the person driving the shuttle would not take us and there was a clear disagreement between the 2 men. My husband voiced a complaint and the lobby manager said he would provide us a complaint form no such form was ever provided. Apple booking complaint; while booking out trip the rep told us we would have to pay for our luggage and that we would not be able to take a carry on, everyone on this flight had a carry on which was upsetting because our luggage was also charged for being over 50lbs and had I been able to take a carry on like all the other passengers I would have saved the extra fees charged to me...very unhappy with Apple and the lack of pertinent information

The service Was very good . The food at the buffet was always the same and was not very good. The french fries where Cold when there was some , the Chicken Wings where cold to. Ice Cream was melted all the time. For the wifi it’s super slow when it worked ,and you got to reconnect every day ,if you want the fast wifi you have to pay. The shows where boring the sound was terrible . I think it is a three stars at the Most

Not a true 5 star

First and foremost, this resort is NOT a TRUE five star resort. While the service staff are friendly for the most part, overall the resort is average. The rooms are nice and large, but other aspects suffer. If you love chicken nuggets, pizza, overcooked rice and beans during the day, then this is the place for you. In the night, you have the option to dine at some 'upscale' restaurants which are good, but not great. If you are unlucky and are placed at one of the rooms facing the pool, expect loud noise to keep you up during the majority of the day. Hence, no naps for you or sleeping in past 10 am. The hotel states you have a concierge 24/7, but what that really mean is you can call the front desk and wait for 5-10 minutes for them to answer. Be very careful about the food you eat during the stay. My family became ill and we are unsure if it was the stomach flu or food poisoning, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter. Most people do not go to a resort to use wifi but if you want to use the regular internet it is very slow. For the faster internet you have to pay. Also, if you do not speak Spanish good luck conversing with the service staff. The majority are not well versed in English. Finally, they have excursions to book which are good, but they are expensive. We weren't on a budget vacation, but some of the prices are exorbitant for a simple excursion. Look for other options if you can, this place is average at best.

A very nice location with a significant drop in client service
efmartin2018, Dieppe, Canada
Mon Apr 16 10:38:01 EDT 2018
-We were at Esmeralda the week of April 6th to the 13th, our 4th time at this Resort. The location is very nice, close to the beach, however their is a significant reduction in the service to clients. - The check in was the first sign, a supervisor was on site when we checked in but when asked questions by employees he would not answer, he would either go for a short walk of not raise his head leaving the employee and ourselves with no answers. -I needed a room with a plug alongside my bed for a medical device (CPap) I have and when I called front desk they asked than I call tomorrow!! We exchanged room with another couple we were traveling with but no thanks to Esmeralda. -Even after our 6th visits at the Grand Bahia Principe ( 4th stay at Esmeralda) we were given a room next door to the Riu Palace which is under-going renovations and where jack hammers wake us up every morning!! This also prevented us from using our balcony because of construction dust and loud noise. -The Wi-Fi was spotty and inconsistent. -a lot of mosquitoes bites this year where it was not the case in the 3 previous years and to the point medical assistance was required for my spouse upon arrival. They may have dropped or reduced the spraying/fogging for mosquitoes, one thing for sure it is not like before. -It was very common to wait 30 minutes (minimum) for service for a drink at the beach or the pool. The premium liquor was available at an extra cost which is another chance from our past stays at Esmeralda. -The morning following our arrival we went to book restaurants for the week (as we have done for the 3 previous years) only to be told that all the of the "A La Carte Restaurants" are booked, none are available and that we should have booked them 3-4 weeks before arriving. This was another surprise and we ended up eating at restaurants (glorified buffets) for the week that were clearly not our preference therefore very disapointed with quality of food we were used too in previous years. -it seemed their was way more supervisors on site than people responsible in providing a service to clients, it ranged from white shirts, others with ranking insignia, black suits to the regular service provider. - during the week we saw a gathering of managers congratulating other managers on a job well done!!! we understand the concept however it did not conincide with the level of service offered when during the week we were there! -Because of the quality of service we had at Esmeralda for the 3 previous years, we had 2 other couples traveling with us and for the first time south. That was another disapointment for us. -Based on previous experiences at Esmeralda we do not feel it has maintained it's 4.5 rating. Probably closer to a 3.5 - 4.0. Finally, I think it may be time for us examine options at other Resorts that are rated 4.5 - 5.0 and support this by providing the level of service daily on a regular and on-going basis.

We enjoyed our trip at the Bahia Principe resort. It is a great family destination. The weather was great and we enjoyed both the beach and the pool at Esmeralda. Our Butler in building 96 was Adriel (aka Charlie). He took great care of us during our visit, and took great pride in his job. We would definitely recommend the Bahia Principe Esmeralda resort and will consider visiting it again.

vacation - a overall ok time

Arrived at Esmeralda being dropped off by DominicanPlus airport shuttle. Booking with them was easy online and they whisked us off in a private van quickly. Upon arrival at the front desk, there was no wait, but alas, even though two individuals tried to find our reservation, they could not. I explained it might be because I booked using the 'book your flight and stay combo' option on the Bahia website (that's another issue). It was suggested we go have lunch and they would work on finding it. When we returned, they were much busier and she hadn't had a chance to look into it. So we sat in the lobby to wait. I then noticed a woman who appeared to be much in charge (Tatiana). I went up and asked for her help. She had it resolved in a matter of 5 minutes. About the way I booked the vacation. I saw on the main Bahia website a place that said - "Enjoy our new Product Flight and Hotel, Best online prices guaranteed". THIS IS NOT BOOKING THROUGH THE HOTEL! I found that out when I called the resort to book our 'free' transport from/to the airport. They said since I booked through a 3rd party, I wasn't eligible. Wasn't eligible for points for the stay either. BE AWARE. Got to our room and first thing that hit us was the smell of mold. Having an allergy to mold, I was concerned about getting sick. Otherwise the room was wonderful. The next day we asked to be switched to another room, but was told there was none available, but maybe the next day. The next day we saw Tatiana and told her and she ordered the room to be cleaned immediately. After that, room was much better. You run into any issues, look for Tatiana. She was very helpful (think she managed ALL the aspects of the resort) and when seeing us always asked if everything was ok. We ate in several specialty restaurants including Portofino and Bella Italia (Portofino was better), Takara (Asian ) which was ok but food was salty, Pescador (fish) was not good at all, Mikado Japanese (tepanyaki) was ok, but they expected tips for the cook, server AND another server for desert). Most lunches were at Arricef by the beach, one was at Jasmine. Breakfasts were at both Jasmine and Geranious (which we preferred - not as crowded as Jasmine and you could dine outside). Buffet food left a lot to be desired, but enough choices so you wouldn't starve. We used the main pool and the smaller pool by Geranious. The activities are at the main pool. FOR BOTH THE BEACH AND POOLS, you better get chairs saved EARY in the morning, especially if you want the shade. Even though signs say saving is not allowed, it is done. The beach is VERY crowded. Since there are 7 different resorts in the complex, you can imagine... good thing each resort as it's own pools. I agree with a previous review that stated with a good attitude and showing some patience and respect, you get a lot further with your needs. We encountered many of the staff who would warm up and smile or talk to you if you started the conversation. Alberto who cooked us many breakfasts in Geranious was a pleasure. The grill guy at Jasmine would sing and I would prompt him to when there. Overall we enjoyed the stay, but probably will go back to Bahia Akumal in Mexico, which we stayed at the last 2 years. Evening shows at the theatre at Punta Cana was much like we saw at Bahia Akumal. OK enough to kill an hour before retiring. Water activity team was a hoot. Raphael, Sixto, Carlo and Jhon. I took a catamaran lesson for $35 and then went out several times after. You get an hour a day.
