Beatiful week in Punta Cana
himarkus, Toronto, Canada
Wed Feb 03 11:23:53 EST 2016
My wife and I and are two youngest aged 7 and 11 have just returned from a week at this lovely resort. We flew on Rouge/Air Canada. Although tight for room, the flight was fast and efficient. Next time I think I'll go Westjet or Air Canada but not Rouge. Our arrival at the airport was met with massive lines at emigration. This is normal in Punta Cana though very frustrating when you are bringing young children. It's the same when you leave by the way. The bus to the resort was about a 30 min trip. Don't waste your $ hiring your own transport unless you have to. If it's included as ours was it is more than sufficient. The resort is huge. They drop you off at The Punta Cana section and then shuttle you to The Esmeralda. It was done quickly and our check in was swift. Our room key was not coded properly so I had to return to the desk to get them redone. No apology was made but c'est la vie. The section I requested in advance via email in villa 96 was given to us. The rooms are large, clean and spacious. There is a little mini fridge stocked with a small assortment of pop and mini liquor bottles. The bathroom is huge and modern. Everyday the room was cleaned very well by the staff. We had a few small things through out our week where we needed maintenance and they arrived quickly and did the work well. The Esmeralda is their luxury section along with the Ambar. They are quite a lot nicer than the other three resorts. The pools are beautiful and clean, the entire property is well maintained. The beach is great, crowded but we always got our four loungers with shade each day. The kids water park is great. The buffets are quite good and two of the three a la cartes we tried were very good. I pre booked them via email. I would highly recommend that as they book up quickly. They were ready for us when we arrived which was very nice. The Garden Grill and Makato were great. Having recently been to the 5 star Moon Palace in Cancun we did notice a different level of service here. They do try very hard and are polite and friendly but it's more of a 4 to a 4 1/2 star resort. That said it's a really beautiful place to spend a holiday. Our only two complaints would be the trolleys that travel all around the resort are a little dangerous when you have kids in tow. The cars move quickly and quietly and come up on you fast so pay attention especially if you have kids with you. The other issue is the water. We didn't drink the tap water ever but my wife was quite ill for a few days and we all got a bit of tummy trouble off and on. As soon as we came home it was gone so I'm pretty sure it's the water there. We only went to one theatre show, The Michael Jackson tribute and it was very impressive. The staff at the bars, restaurants and service areas are very nice and helpful. Hats off to them because not all tourists are nice and hey, remember to leave a tip for the waiters and house keeping. A few dollars goes a long way there. I was rather surprised to see many leaving dinner with nothing left for staff. We generally tip $2 for buffets and $5 for a la carte. I don't know what everyone else does but it seems reasonable to us. We booked The Caribbean Pirate excursion from the guys at the pool. It was $110 each and free for kids. Half day of snorkelling, swimming with Nurse sharks and holding sting rays. Well worth it. The water sports on the beach need to be booked in advance so don't wait too long if you're keen on paddle boarding or sailing. The ocean was warn and clean, very little seaweed. The Esmeralda staff were out there all the time cleaning. Many of the other hotels in the area were not as clean on the beach. All in all we enjoyed our stay very much and hope you do too! More>

Amazing Esmeralda

All I can say is that this resort within a resort caters to your every need. It's clean, the staff are all hard working and the food is excellent. The beach was kept clear of seaweed everyday and there were activities to keep you bz. I visited the spa and Ester gave the best ever reflexology massage I could have imagined for an even more amazing price. I would definitely return. My only tip would be that for those who don't sleep well on a hard bed you may not be comfortable. I would definitely love to visit again. Oh and for those who love to walk ... If you want to opt for a nature walk on the site you can take advantage here .. There are the trolleys that will take you anywhere you want to go but if you want to keep fit or even take a leisurely walk after meals this is the place for !!! More>

A relaxing week before the crazy of Christmas

We booked this on a whim in mid October for the week before Christmas, just me and the DH. We looked at the Ambar as it' AO but decided on Esmeralda because it's a bit smaller. We have 4 children (24 y to 11 y) so we didn't feel a need to avoid OPC. We booked a private transfer from the airport, we didn't want to wait on the shuttle that was included with our hotel. We pulled up at the main lobby and were loaded into a cart and whisked right over to the Esmeralda. A drink was handed to us as we checked in and met our butler. He took us to our room, bags were brought up straight away by the bell man. Our butler showed where everything was, how to keep the AC running when we weren't in the room and how to call down for butler service and that was the end of him, never saw him again. It wasn't even a problem, anytime we needed something we just dialed Butler Services and they were johnny on the spot. The beach is lovely, the breakfast is lovely. We had breakfast in the buffet by the pool the first two mornings, then we found the buffet farthest from the beach, done. Lovely patio seating and not as crowded. Service was top notch. Solicitous drink service on the beach and a lovely café near the beach for lunch. Dinner was by reservation only, we did the Don Pablo at the Ambar, (wish we had done that twice) the Makaido, it was hands down the best, Pescadoro (should be called the PescaDON'To) and the Steakhouse at the Esmeralda (meh). Would I go back? In a heartbeat. What would I do differently? Sign up for the windsurfing at the BEGINNING of the trip, it's free but if you've never done it there's a $20 fee for instruction so better to do the instruction the first day and have the whole rest of the vacation to wind surf. I will also ALWAYS sign up for parasailing, that was AWESOME. Definitely will be back More>

This is our second trip to the Bahia Principe resort complex, our first being to the Bavaro section 8 years ago. The Esmeralda section will not suit everyone, I think if you want more excitement and more people, try the Punta Cana or Bavaro. For us and our 7 year old, it was money will spent. At the Esmeralda we only tried two of the restaurants, the Jazmin, which is where we had breakfast and lunch and the Takara. For both of these we had no complaints at all, none of us were sick and we were treated really well by the staff, for myself, the chefs behind the stove from opening to closing really deserve more credit then they get. If you head to the Takara, don't forget to say thanks to the main chef, he will be out walking around, and seems to take a lot of pride in his work. He did a great job and our food was very nice. we also visited the Garden Grill and BBQ in the Olas, which were very bland. Personally I won't go back to those ones, nothing of interest. El Pescador, came with high regards, and it was good, but I thought it would be downright amazing from what I was hearing... The restaurant that we really enjoyed was Los Corales. What made this special was not only the simple food but how the servers enjoyed telling us about it and for lack of better words, they seemed really proud of it. Maybe it was national pride or something, but it really showed through. If you are in for entertainment....well you won't be staying up much later then 10 pm. the resort gets pretty quiet. Now that isn't to say we weren't entertained by the dancing, the plays or the silly antics... nope, we enjoyed that a lot. The dancers, not only being gorgeous worked very hard and looked like they were enjoying themselves immensely. Our little one was not overly impressed with the Scouts Camp at Esmeralda, and we didn't get to take her up to the Turquesa where most of the children's activities would be. The Scouts leader was a very nice lady, and she made due with what she had in the best way she could. I hope that Esmeralda will put a little more into her and her camp, as she was very good. If you are a gym person.... Forget it. The gym at the Punta Cana section, is horrible. I'm actually surprised at how bad it was. If you are a runner, the trails and the beach were fantastic... to wrap it up, thanks to the bartenders who added the top up..... not sure if it is rum or water, but still, great drinks, the waiters, thanks again, all very nice, not great English, but we didn't mind learning too, and the front desk... thank you for our great room, but I'm not saying where it was, because I want that section next time I go. at all cost... avoid the Privilege club sales. I almost gave the resort a 3 star just because they wasted my day. More>
