We took an adult family trip to the Punta Cana over Christmas, and stayed at the Bahia Principe Ambar Blue. As advertised, the "Ambar Blue" was closest to the resort beach, which had an exclusive adults only section. The beach was well-kept, and their were ample beach chairs availble. As with any beach, you have to get there in the early morning for the chairs closest to the water. There were servers that were regularly available, and unlike some resorts in Mexico, there wasn't much intrusion by excursion vendors. The service at Ambar Blue was very good. The serving staff at most of the restaurants were very friendly and responsive. Cleaning and maintenace staff were also very friendly. Sometimes requests get lost in translation, but most worked very hard to please. Unfortunately our family ran into issues with the rooms. The rooms themselves were good, but not exceptional (compared to other five-stars). The space was ample; the bathroom was modern; and the bed was comfortable. However, we experienced leakage (sometimes due to rain, but other times for no observable reason). In my case, the washroom had a small leak over the toilet. My brother and his wife were moved the frist night because of water on the floor, and did okay for most of the trip. The last night, they had a significant leak of water, and were move to other rooms that also had leaks. They were moved four times that evening. Guest services did what they could considering this happened the final day -- but it is somewhat concerning how many rooms had these leaks (without knowing how they are fixed). Lastly, the food at Ambar Blue was wonderful. The main buffet, Palyrma, had a great spread of quality food. In terms of A la carte, the steakhouse and BBQ were also great. The food was excellent at Ambar Blue. Overall, the experience was very good. I didn't consider the rooms to be five-star, but assuming you get a room without a leak, you probably get great value for what you pay. The great beach, wonderful food and the great staff is really what allowed us to enjoy the vacation, in lieu of the room leakage issues. A good spot (potentially great without leaks).

Beautiful Grounds and Nice Beach - Nothing Special

We have stayed at 10 + Bahia Resorts and this one is no better or worse than the rest. Most of the staff are really great. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. Probably the best looking greenery we have come across at a resort!!! Great Job!!! There's multiple pairs of wild parrots too! The beach is nice, albeit obviously very busy over the X-mas break. Surf is quite strong but fun. Pools are fun. Green pool is nicer, but has much less shade and has a more relaxed vibe. Food was good. The green buffet is way better than the blue buffet for breakfast and dinner. Beach restaurant is great for lunch. Waiters at the beach bar are awesome! Nelson in particular was fantastic!!! Franklyn in the yellow shirt will hook you up with chairs if you show up late. He was great too! Transportation is convenient, but nothing is too far to walk. Good luck getting a room by the beach!!! Entertainment was great with lots of variety at the various venues. Non smoking area in the lobby was a welcome surprise!!! All that being said, the hotel caters to the larger groups and privilege club members. Don't ask for anything at the front desk and you won't be disappointed. They are so bound be hotel policies and rules that they are basically useless, but that won't stop them from taking your tips. We are very easy going people and we don't ask much, but we are really getting quite tired of having our requests and issues ignored at Bahia Principe hotels. Small fish in a big pond, I guess???

I little bit big for my liking, but otherwise great

After a few trips to other places in the Dominican Republic we decided to try Punta Cana this time. We selected the LBP Ambar for that. Here's how it looked like: Check in: Absolute cluster**** They call it private check in, however the right name should be annoying check in. We were herded into a small room in the Ambar 2 (now Ambar Green) lobby, where we were offered some over-sweetened drinks and asked to complete the registration forms. The whole process was way too slow, too much talking from resort employees. Typical example of how this thing shouldn't be done. Room: Junior suites in building 63 at Ambar 1 (now Ambar Blue). Reasonably sized, a bit dated, but still looking good. Our room had a king size bed, our sons shared a room with 2 double beds. The bathrooms were reasonably sized, well appointed. I appreciated the shower stall in the bathroom. The safe was included in price. The minibar was stocked daily with water, pop, beer and few minis of vodka, rum and whisky. The beach: Clean, with lots of loungers in the Ambar private area. However, considering the number of Bahia Principe properties using the beach, the area right at the water may be crowded at times. The sea there is good for swimming, however there is no safe access to reef for snorkeling due to motor boat traffic. Food: Good food across the whole property. We were satisfied with the food and service in both buffets and most of the a'la carte's we visited. Oddly enough, the only place causing unhappiness was the Don Pablo Collection Gourmet Restaurant Drinks: Bars everywhere across the property with good selection of domestic and international drinks. No complaints here. Service: The staff was great everywhere. In general, the place is a bit large to my liking. I prefer quieter properties such as the GBP El Portillo in Las Terrenas. But I guess the large resort is the price for visiting Punta Cana. Would I go back? If the price is right, why not?

Two week Christmas break. First room; on arrival at night reported water leaking through bathroom ceiling which was loose and bulging. Phone not working. Balcony door lock broken (ground floor room). Next day changed rooms; Main door lock not working and chain missing. Safe left locked open. All dressing table drawers broken. Balcony door lock broken. Air conditioning not working due to detector on door being broken.Terrace light not working. Bath leaking and stained yellow.Mini bar not restocked. Hotel very large and pretty. All pools had loud music playing during day.Beach very crowded and tightly packed with sun beds. Food good.
