The minute you entire the resort you welcomed with smiles and drinks. The resort is very clean and well maintained. The food is exceptional both in the buffet and al acartes enjoying cuisine In the specialty restaurant is like a high end restaurant in Canada. The grounds are full of vegetation like walking in the jungle with lots of wildlife. The suites are very clean and well maintained. The staff are always greeting you and smiling and their to help you. Waiters are very tentative to your needs. Pools are big and lots of them in different areas of the resort. This resorts also offers you the ability to eat at their other resort and use their facilities very nice. This is definitely a five star hotel and I would recommend it to anyone you would not regret staying there.

Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal ~ Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff III

This is a super late review of our stay Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal back in January 2017. I found this review while planning our next vacation at another Bahia Principe for January 2019. Please forgive the delay. I hope the information is still helpful for future vacationers. This was our 3rd stay at Bahia Principe in the Riviera Maya and we were not disappointed. How can you be with 80 degree sunny weather in January! We also chose to upgrade and stay at Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal for our annual Riviera Maya vacation instead of Tulum. For us, vacation at Bahia means doing a whole lotta nothing! Breakfast, pool, walk the beach, pool, eat lunch, pool, walk on the beach, take a nap, afternoon coffee, evening cocktails, eat dinner, maybe watch a show, nightcap, start all over again…with some diversions here & there. We chose not to do any excursions this trip and stayed at the resort. Room ~ We started in one building (that was a bit far out, which meant a lot of walking) and got moved and essentially upgraded to an ocean facing room when problems developed in our original building. Our second room was 3rd/top floor and the ocean view was fantastic. Both rooms, even though showing a little wear & tear, were nice. We had a daily maid and a few nights of turn down service. The room was always tidy. With a note and a dollar or two, our mini bar would be stocked with our preferred diet soda and treats. Some days better than others. As others have mentioned before, the grounds are always kept up beautifully! It is a tropical paradise. Food ~ We enjoyed just about every meal both at the buffet and the a la carte restaurants. We ate ate Don Pablo (we wandered over to Tulum), Los Corales (Brazilian Steakhouse) and Frutos Del Mar (seafood). We usually eat dinner early so did not have any problems booking the a la cartes. Again, the resort was not to capacity, so this may have helped. The buffet always had something tasty to eat. Obviously, it could get crowded at prime times, and sometimes dishes would run low. No complaints at all. Drinks ~ This was a definite upgrade from Tulum. You are served top shelf brands. However, the quality of the drinks truly depended on who was bartending and how busy the lobby bar is. I do recommend you bring your own cold beverage cups, like Bubba brand. There was good poolside service, but it is convenient and nice to have a larger cup that will keep your beverages colder longer. I always pack a small tube/bottle of dish liquid to wash out our cups at night. In years past, we would get a taxi and go up to Playa Del Carmen to pick up special libations and maybe a trinket or two. We enjoy having a cocktail in our room before heading out to dinner. We skipped going this trip and purchased a couple bottles from the onsite liquor store. The prices were not outrageous. Part of our daily routine was to have afternoon coffee in the lobby bar. Always good coffee served with nice little treats to go with. Be careful of the raccoons! They come out in full force when there is food around. Pools ~ We never had a problem finding sunbeds! Perhaps we were lucky with the time of year and the resort not being booked to capacity. We started out by the activity pool but ended up loving the downtempo vibe of the infinity adult-only pool. We did not spend time at the big main pool! It was always crowded and loud, especially later in the afternoon. My guess is it is because the swim up bar is located there. Beach ~ Lots of it, a pleasure to walk daily! Some seaweed. The beach workers certainly did their best to get ahead of it. We were able to skirt it and enjoy our walks. Finally, I see many people in reviews complaining about tipping and perhaps because there are those of us who do. I can say none of the staff treated us as if they expected to be tipped. I enjoy leaving little thank you notes with a dollar or two for the room staff. They work very hard and deserve a little appreciation. There is something and somewhere for everyone at this resort. If you want quiet, you can find it. If you want activities and to be social, you can find that. If you want to explore and go on excursions, there are lots on offer. We loved this vacation. We would return to this resort! However, because we enjoy Bahia Principe resorts in general, this coming winter (2019) we chose to book a Luxury Bahia in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I promise that review will be a bit timelier. ;)

Had a good stay....

Just back from 10 days at this resort with a family group of 8. This was our second visit here, and we had stayed before at the sister resort Sian Ka'an previously. Room was good, A/C worked well. Transport around the resort and to sister resorts was wonderful. Staff are fantastic. Very excellent service. Had some questionable meals at various restaurants, with horrible service and food at Le Gourmet. The waiters there need some more training, and the food, for some of us, was inedible. Such and shame. One thing that I wish the resort would do, is to give everyone a guide when they check in on how to use the buffet....IE, don't use your fingers to pick up food (as an example, I witness on two different occasions, people grabbing bunches of French fries with their bare hands), don't lick your fingers and then pick up the tongs, don't eat as you walk around the buffet or while waiting in line, don't cut the bread while holding it with your hands instead of using the cloth that is there for that reason....anyhow, you get the idea. If people followed those rules, less people would get ill during their vacation. Also, don't let children in diapers in the pools. Cruise ships ban it, and so should resorts. One of the pools had to be closed because of an "accident". Build a pool just for young children and keep the rest of us safe. Will we return?...yes.

Great location and beach, good drinks, not so great kids club and service at restaurants

We loved: - awesome location on the beach . Only Akumal and Tulum property are on the beach , Cuba and the adults only hotel are very far from the bech. - beach is awesome and the shallow water is perfect for the kids. Water is full of colorful fish that you can feed or snorkel with . - there is great beach drinks service with waiters , they were doing a great job. - drinks are much better than most all inclusive resorts and food is good although I was surprised by the very limited ceviche at the buffet but they had good mussels instead. - some nights they had fun entertainment at the lobby pool. - morning yoga at 10 am on the dock is beautiful and they also had even better 9 am yoga at main pool - hotel is doing a good job on cleaning the algae daily so you can enjoy beautiful water in the morning ! What we did not like too much: - kids club was only open till 5 pm and kinda boring for the kids. My kids were comparing with Crown Paradise Cancun where the kids club had a great water park inside and lots of fun games for kids all the way till 9.30 pm. Akumal’s kids club is very limited in activities. - Avoid full service restaurants . We went to 5 gourmet and all had horrible and super slow service with exception on the Mexican Cozumel restaurant in Tulum hotel. In all others the service was a joke. We even had to go get our own water after telling waiters multiple times with no result. We were a big group though , smaller groups may have better luck. Food at buffer was better than full service though which was surprising for an all inclusive hotel . Things to mention : if you have kids, get a room closest to lobby as kids club is there and main buffet is there : buildings 48, 49,50 or 51 are good . If you like swimming in open sea , go to Tulum beach as Akumal beach swimable area is very limited.

The service, the grounds, beach, staff....did I mention the staff???? Wow, we’re going home tomorrow & I really don’t want to leave, it’s such a wonderful hotel, the staff are a credit to the awesome experience, they are sooooooooo hard working and really want to make your stay unforgettable. We stayed in villa 83, adults only (a free upgrade none the less) what a great area, close to the beach, a great beach cafe/restaurant. What would I change????? NOTHING.....that just abouts sums it up. Live, Life, be here, it’s awesome 😎
