Kauai Marriott Review

Oct 12 2017
We were a bit disappointed with the facilities. At check-in, the lobby was sweltering. Fans would help stir the air. Our room was nice but the carpet was frayed, the couch appeared soiled/tired, the A/C grates (fresh air return and air output were filthy as well as the filter), and our tub/shower diverter didn't work properly so water pressure was a bit low plus water poured out of the tub filler which then couldn't drain completely while showering. The engineer quickly changed the filter for the A/C which helped us get cold air to our room but when he wiped down the vent cover, dust flew into the room in big chunks. We had to wait until housekeeping returned in the morning to get it cleaned which meant less than great air quality the first day. When the engineer came back for the tub/shower diverter problem he said he had to wait to fix it when the room was vacant. As a long-time REALTOR, and owner of multiple properties, I found that to be a pretty weak excuse. Most diverter valves can be changed out by removing the plate at the faucet handle. I could understand if he said he needed a day or two to get the part, but not doing anything at all wasn't acceptable. Yes, the front desk offered to move our room but we were traveling with friends and we both were fully unpacked. Moving would have been a huge inconvenience. The hotel is definitely showing signs of wear and deferred maintenance. The jacuzzi's had missing tiles and the grout and tiles were dirty. All in all, not the best experience we've had at a Marriott. My husband and I both traveled extensively, domestically and internationally, for business so we had much to compare it to. It was sad to find this hotel was in need of updating. The frayed carpet in our room was a huge sign that things were being put-off too long. I do want to put in a good word for your housekeeping staff, especially Maritise (hope I'm spelling her name correctly) and the wait staff at Kukui's was also very friendly and terrific.

Everything was great except these few minor things. The prices for food and drinks were more then expected. Drinks were twice if not three times the price on the mainland and the food was twice. not only at the hotel but everywhere. The adventure activities were fairly price and well worth it. Our room was to be pool view. it sort of was. we were on the first floor and able to walk right out to the pool but there was a restroom and towel building directly in front of our room. not much of a view.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Marriott Hotel. The pool was awesome, the views are stunning, it has a very nice beach area and you are walking distance to additional restaurants and shopping. There were a few things that could have been better...whoever design the rooms, please put a door on the toilet area! The bathroom door is a slider and doesn't give much privacy. Also we found out the day we were leaving that there is a back parking lot just a few steps from our room. Wish we knew that...for days we parked in the main parking lot and it was an exhaustive long walk! Also, keep in mind that nothing is for free in Kauai...we paid for parking, internet, cabana seating at the pool...nothing is included as a guest, so be prepared. We also found some wonderful local vendors at the hotel, which we bought jewelry, flip flops and original paintings. It was great to support the locals. When we arrived at our hotel on a Friday, we had to wait for our room to be ready. At 4:00 they notified us it was ready and we settled into our room. Afterwards we had been recommended by the front desk to go to Kukui's for dinner as they were having a buffet. We went down and asked to be seated and we were told they didn't have any openings and the next available reservation was at 8:45. Mind you this is a open restaurant and we could see that over 50% of the tables were vacant. I asked her if they could do anything, we just had a 6 hour flight and checked in late to our room...she completely brushed us off and said absolutely not then began to help the people that walked up behind us. That didn't start our trip very well...but overall we loved our vacation and can't wait to go back. But we won't be dining there!

Our room was a garden view, still you can see the pool and ocean from the room. The room came with a small fridge. We were very happy with the cleanliness of the hotel, the housekeeping staff did a great job on our room, and overall hotel staff were the most professional, helpful, and friendly we have encountered in our travels. We were very happy with our choice. The pool is kept at a consistent warm temperature and was very clean. The ocean is right outside the hotel, so very easy access, and actually plenty of shady areas for when you need a sun break. It was an overall great experience.

This is the second time that we have stayed at the Marriott Resort, and both times the trip was excellent. The staff was very helpful especially when we asked to stay for the "linger longer" option. We did not have to leave until 6:00 pm, and we did not have to change rooms, so it made a very relaxing day knowing that we had a place to stay as our flight did not leave until 8:45 pm. The entire staff during our stay was fabulous.

We make sure to stay at least one night at this hotel every trip, even if we are staying elsewhere on the island the rest of the time. The property is very beautiful, the pool is amazing and the location is great. We enjoy the location, it is walking distance to great restaurants and good shopping. We love to go to Dukes, and the poolside service is high quality. Outside of one situation we have received amazing service from every staff member we have interacted with and have often had them go above and beyond. Highly recommend this hotel!

We had complimentary photos done by Melchor with Bali Hai at the Marriott and it was a wonderful experience with beautiful photos. They don’t usually edit complimentary photos but Melchor did edit two as a gift for us since we are 8 months pregnant with our first baby. Definitely recommend Bali Hai for photos on Kauai!

We recently spent a few days in this resort on our trip around the world. It was the first stop after Sydney. Our room had the most amazing views. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. We boiled the water for our morning cup of tea in the coffee maker. Reception was efficient in a beautiful lobby. The resort displayed pride in the country's heritage and there was obvious environmental concern. They even had two resident Nene Nene Geese. The gardens were just amazing. The beach was ok. Breakfast buffet by the pool was excellent but a bit expensive. The staff were lovely. The koi fish in the ponds were fed around 9.00 in the morning and that was an experience. They nearly climbed ashore to reach the food. We would certainly return but NOT in school holiday time.

We return again🌴🌴

We traded to come here. Did the happy dance when I received the email. When we checked in, coming from Koloa Landing, room was not ready until 4:30. Expect better then that, they knew we would be there Received a phone call at home prior to our trip. Also received email telling us we would be on the 8 th floor. 100.00 credit🌴 Small kitchen, good coffee pot. We knew this from our prior stays. Units need to be updated, starts next week , comfortable but dated. Also need more washing machines and dryers to accommodate guests Think they need more concierges. Always busy and others waiting. This unit 871, had the best view. Even in the dark, beautiful. We will stay here again. Great location. Thank you, Marriott. 🌴🌴 Also pick better restaurants close to resort.

Sprawling resort on a lovely bay

Overall, our week here was very good. The property is beautifully landscaped at every turn. The pool is very large, with 5 covered jacuzzis that were kept at perfect temperature and a small kids' pool (smart idea). Somehow, the staff keep the entire pool area very clean and there is a well stocked towel hut to ensure you can always have fresh towels. There were more than enough chairs and loungers around the pool though they could use more umbrellas and the loungers have bars at lower-back area that make them very uncomfortable (I heard many other guests complaining about this so I know it wasn't just us). There were also loungers on the bay, but it is public so I'm not sure if those were for the hotel guests or not. The bay water is churned up with waves, so don't expect clear, pale blue. The water is cooler than I experienced in Maui, but very nice and the sand is soft - very clean but some driftwood, etc. This resort had a LOT of action, as we were there during the summer and were one of the few couples vs families. The bay also attracts local surfers, which was great fun to watch and they are further down the beach where the waves are bigger, and did not appear to conflict with the tourists. In the evenings they light torches around the pool area which makes the setting so lovely, and there are a couple of nice outdoor fireplaces with comfy chairs. Kukui's, at the far end of the pool has outdoor and open-air covered dining. While it offers some light fare, it is much better than the typical resort pool restaurant. We ate several meals there. We also walked down the beach to Duke's and Portofino's for dinners - both were excellent and a short walk (there is pavement, so it would be fine for wheelchairs and walkers). There is an Enterprise car rental on-site, which we used. Our room was recently updated, comfortable and had a small balcony with two chairs. Now for the down sides: Despite our Elite status, our confirmed early check-in request was denied and the upgraded room we originally received (at 4 pm) overlooked the towel hut roof so we had to request a change and eventually were moved to a higher room - still overlooking roofs but with a slim view of the pool and mountain beyond the bay. It is discouraging to experience this when the whole purpose of loyalty programs is to build toward a better stay experience. When we have stayed in other Marriott resorts, overseas and domestic, we've always received very generous upgrades (usually full ocean view in the Caribbean) along with Elite gifts (choice of fruit or something) - we weren't even told about the free water bottle in our room. I had to learn about that from another guest. I'm not sure how to account for this indifference but it left an impact and I am hopeful it is only this resort and not a shift in Marriott's brand. While this resort is on a lovely setting, when we go back we will try the Marriott in Poipu instead.
