My husband and I visited for our wedding anniversary and stayed using Marriott points. This is an enormous property, with a working ranch and residences on site, plus walking access to excellent beaches. On our previous visits to Costa Rica we stayed in small, Tico-run hotels, and this was our first trip to the Guanacaste region, and our first stay at a large corporate hotel chain. Initially we were unsure if this would be a fit for us - it's such a fancy resort, full of Americans, and lacking much of the local Costa Rica "vibe" that we love about this country. The food is expensive, there's no other way to say it, but since we stayed with points we reasoned that it was well worth it. We settled in and enjoyed the delicous buffet dinner at Mansita which features some traditional food and a wide variety of fruits, and enjoyed breakfast at the same restaurant. We ended up eating all but two meals at this restaurant, and had the pleasure of practicing our Spanish with the lovely staff. When we mentioned we were spending our anniversary in Costa Rica because we had been married in San Jose, we were treated to delicious complimentary cocktails brought by the bartender, and our server even left us a nice little note wishing us a happy anniversary! That was sweet. This is in addition to the card and chocolate covered strawberries left in our room for our arrival. My husband and I travel a lot, usually for work, and work in international offices, so we make a point of presenting the best face of America when abroad. Unfortunately I did not see the other guests at the hotel on their best behavior. The staff puts up with a lot. That being said, there are a couple of issues with the property. The ambient music played by the hotel is constant, and the different, slightly louder music played by the pool bar begins at 7:30am. I want to hear the ocean when I'm at the beach, or at least my own thoughts. We walked to the Hacienda Beach Club, and further down, to Lola's, and past that, and the beach outside of the property is far better for swimming and relaxing. The other issue is what another reviewer mentioned - this resort does not know what it wants to be - a family resort, or a couples resort. There's the 24 hour pool and room service, and live music and vendors in the evening. There are planned activities and a kids center. Is this a family resort - and if so, why try to make a party atmosphere? Tamarindo (called Tamagringo by locals) is a party town, and very accessible from the resort. Why not focus on one aspect of the resort and not try to be everything to everyone? We loved our stay because of our interactions with the staff and the excellent service that Marriott provides. Our one hiccup was arranging transport to and from the airport - we found a shuttle service on our own after online research, but the day before our trip received an email from the concierge instructing us to use their exclusive vendor. Maybe I'm Type A but I don't wait until the day before a trip to arrange transport in another country. We would visit again - with points - but if paying ourselves would stay in a different property with more quiet, more access to local culture, and more Ticos! PS there is a family of kitties that is quite sweet, plus we saw a lot of howler monkeys and a spotted skunk!

I returned to the JW for a mother/daughter getaway and was not disappointed. The room was spacious and very clean with a lovely garden patio. Not only were the accommodations spectacular but the staff at this resort make you feel so welcome. At every corner of this property we were greeted with smiles and helpful attitudes. To single out a few - David - bellman who welcomed us and into our room; Joseph and Ronald - poolside servers. The service in the restaurants was very attentive and the food was good. The zip line tour was awesome and affordably priced. We wish we will be able to return again and again.

The resort was recomended to me by a Marriott concierge from the Delta Hotel in Montreal. Our stay was wonderful. The food was delicious, the rooms were chic and clean, and the staff was very profesional and cordial. Our special thanks to Stefano from the Nau bar.

My wife and I were traveling with our two children, 9 and 7 and decided to cash in some of our reward points for a stay at the JW Marriott Guanacaste. We opted for 5 nights here, which was just perfect for our family. We had a wonderful oceanview and were on the first floor, which meant we could walk right out to the beach. We were also located less than 50 meters from the entrance to the pool area, so it was wonderful for trips back and forth to the room when we forgot sunscreen or sunglasses or such. Also, because of being an elite member with Marriott, we were provided a discount off the food and beverages throughout the whole resort, which made the dining there fairly affordable. I will make sure to highlight the good and the bad, but the bad didn't negatively impact us enough for me to drop down below the 5 star rating. The bad is that you are a good long ways away from anything non-resort. You are essentially stuck at the resort if you do not want to pay a huge taxi fee, or rent a car yourself. The one exception is a great restaurant called Lola's which is roughly a 45 minute walk down the beautiful Avellana Beach. The other downside is that the pool service staff was very disengaged. We actually had to order a drink from 4 different people before it arrived. This is great if you want a relaxing time without being bothered, but really stinks if you actually want a drink! On the positive side, we did order room service twice, and they have a 45 minute guarantee or it is free... several times we were watching the clock hoping for a free meal, only to have them exceed expectation and be delivered in 20-25 minutes!

Amazing Place-Great for Families

My family just returned from a week of staying at the JW Marriott-Guanacaste and absolutely loved it. We stayed seven nights and had the perfect combination of activity and "hang-out by the pool family time". The staff are all friendly and extremely accommodating. The rooms are nice (we had an ocean view) and comfortable. We loved it overall and can see us returning there in the future. A few important notes: 1. Get breakfasts including in your room rate. It's a great buffet and really the primarily place to have breakfast at the hotel each morning. 2. We did horseback riding, surfing, and a cooking class at or near the hotel. (Empanadas and Ceviche with Chef Diego who was amazing). The concierge or activities vendors arranged those events for us. Other activities and trips are available, but we have 7 year old twins, so didn't look at the longer/more extreme options. 3. We went on a half day trip to a local national park to see monkeys, crocodiles, etc. The activities desk arranged that for us as well. 4. Go to Lola's, a local beach bar near the hotel. We went twice because I loved it so much. Great food, drinks, and easy to rent boogie boards for $5 for the kids. It is amazing. 5. Happy Hour at the pool bar is from 5p-6p (Buy one, get one) 6. Cabs to Tamarindo are easy and it's a great town to get dinner, walk on the beach, and buy a few souveniers. 7. Transportation to and from Liberia airport was just over an hour and easy to arrange with the hotel (they have a third-party company that takes you each way. Our family was 140.00 each way). Overall, it was a great trip and the JW Marriott Guanacaste was tremendous. Highly recommend.
