Fantastic week at Jewel, Runaway Bay

Arrived back from this fantastic resort this morning, and wanted to leave a review. We (myself, wife and 7 year old daughter) booked via Tui. The flight was from Manchester on one of their Dreamliners, which is a much better option than their older planes. Unfortunately we took off around an hour late, but no biggie. We had a taxi transfer booked from Montego Bay, which was well worth the extra as it got us straight to the resort in just over an hour. On to the hotel. I’ll start with the downsides. As some have already said, the rooms could do with a little updating. Not much required really though. The beds were very comfortable (2 large doubles in our room), a large flat screen TV with a variety of channels in English, a fridge that is restocked with soft drinks and water daily. Some of the furniture has seen better days, and could do with being replaced. Not sure if it was just a ‘feature’ of our room, but the bathroom had a bit of a strange layout. As you walked in (no door) there was a wash basin and, directly opposite, a glass door to the toilet. This was the strange bit. The room with the toilet was very small, and up a step. Oddly, the ceiling was also lower than the main bathroom. This made it feel rather cramped and, if you are a guy over 6 foot, you will have fun relieving yourself standing up! To the left of the bathroom was a wet room style shower, which was very good indeed. There was no bath tub which, for a family, would have been nice, but not a massive problem. The resort has two pools. The main one is directly in front of the main buffet restaurant and, while it’s not hugely deep, it may be a little too deep for some children who aren5 overly confident in the water (from memory it’s around 5’9” deep). The other pool is far more kid friendly. There is a shallow bit (around 2’) with a raised fountain in the middle. There is a drop down to a 4’ deep infinity pool with a swim-up bar. The highlight for my daughter was the waterpark. It’s not the biggest, but there is plenty to keep kids occupied, with a small slide, 2 bigger slides (one that you go down in a tube), a lazy river (with a number of waterfalls that will get you very wet!), and a play pirate ship with all manner of squirty fun. The park itself is not massive, and there is onl6 one way in and out, so it’s safe to let them have their independence and take themselves off to play. There are also lots of lifeguards dotted around at the bottom of all the slides, and at the top of the big ones, with others monitoring all over. It always felt very safe. There are plenty of sun beds around both pools and the waterpark. Beach towels are plentiful - none of the 3 people get one towel each. You can take as many as you want. Always a bonus if you want one to sit on and another to dry off. Food wise, there is a buffet restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, although we never ate lunch in there. Breakfast was good - always a nice selection. My daughter loved the pancakes and waffles, and my wife enjoyed the freshly cooked omelettes. The bacon, sadly, was the American version rather than the good stuff. Whilst not the biggest choice for dinner than some we have seated at, the quality was always very good. A big plus was always the car very section, there there was a freshly cooked meat carved in front of you. The steak and lamb were particularly good - both done pink (although they were happy to slice some and pop in on the chargrill for those who like their meat ruined). We also ate at the pizza restaurant (can recommend the duck and hoisin pizza), but within only one size it’s pronanly not enough for an adult evening meal. Lunch was usually from the grill. Burgers, hot dogs, jerk chicken and wraps chargrilled to order, with a pasta station. They even made salads for strange people who go on holiday and eat salads! The staff throughout the resort were fantastic. All very friendly and happy to assist wherever they could. They are, without doubt, the resort’s biggest asset. The only other gripe was that the WiFi was unavailable in our room for nearly three days. It still worked fine in the lobby, but it’s nice to be able to check emails etc when you’re chilling after a hard day in the sun. It’s not the biggest resort you will ever visit, but we really liked that. It felt much more like a little community, and nothing was more than a 5 minute stroll away. The last resort we went to had a 20 minute yomp to get to some restaurants etc, which isn’t much fun at; the heat with a small child in tow. Overall we had a great time, and suspect we may well look to go back in a couple of years. Thanks again to all the resort staff :-)

Family and Adult Fun

In June 2017- 40 adults and kids went to this resort to celebrate graduations and It was great! At first as I got off the bus I was disappointed at the curb appeal but once you walk through you are in for a surprise. The front desk said they are making renovations and showed me the schematics. There were a few problems with rooms but everything was taken care of promptly. Though this is a family resort small children were not a problem. There was an area for them to do activities and you would have never even know they were there. There is something for everyone, beautiful beaches, wonderful pools, sit down meals as well as buffet style restaurants. Make sure to ask the desk as some restaurants like the Asian restaurant need reservations, Others are just come in and sit. There is one which served a 5 course meal as you watched live entertainment. There was lots of live entertainment and sing along shows. There are excursions to Ocho Rios to Dunns river falls or Montego bay and Negril. The resort surprised us and the family had a separate dinner arranged like a meet and greet. We all wore white to their disco and danced all night, One night I fell asleep early and woke up famished. I thought everything was closed only to find at 2 am there is a grill that served jerk chicken, hamburgers etc. There is even a water park for the kids. I am writing this review because I was looking online right now to go back there.

Wouldn't change a thing!

Mine and 2 other families, all with young kids were here last week. Here is a snapshot of our trip. Bus ride from the airport was about an hour and pretty painless. Note that unlike other island destinations, there isn't a tour guide on the bus selling beer and chatting about the sites - so buy something to drink before getting on. Careful though because the beer outside the terminal costs $6USD per bottle! Arrival is quick and easy and the bellman gets your bags to your room right away; which is a nice surprise compared to other islands. Rooms (and overall the whole resort) is a little tired and old, but to be honest it totally works and in my opinion shouldn't be changed. It has so much character and I fear that a reno would sterilize it too much. Landscaping is second to none - the ground are impeccably well kept - compliments to the grounds crew team. Food is good and there is lot's of variety at the buffet. We ate at all the restaurants and our favorite was the Japanese place. Great food and a great experience sitting at the teppanyaki table with the kids. Beach is good; not Cuba or the Turks, but good. Sand is clean and well kept. Best part was taking a banana or some cereal out into the water to feed the fish. Instantly swarmed by hundreds of beautiful reef fish - all in only 5 feet of water so the kids loved it. Water park is amazing - not really our thing as we are beach folk. But we did go a few times and loved it - as did the kids. There are always activities being organized and each night you will get a note in your door outlining what's going on - take the time to read it. Get a ground floor room - we stayed in 2116 and the location was perfect. Close to everything you need. PM me if you have any questions.

Good Hotel with some hiccups

We choose the Jewels Runnaway Bay based upon all the good things that people had said on TripAdvisor. It’s a good hotel, yes a little dated in the room style but we didn’t go to Jamaica to sit in a room. The rooms are a good size, clean and well maintained. Personally we found the food to be better in the speciality restaurants as opposed to the buffet which suffers the same problem as every buffet in every hotel in the world and that’s lukewarm food and in the case of Runnaway Bay overcooked as well. The vast majority of the staff were great but everybody has an off day and we bumped into a couple of staff having an off day. We never found a shortage of sun beds in any location and always plentiful shade available if that’s what you want. We would recommend the hotel to all our friends. The hiccups for us were some training issues needed at the hotel, some personal preferences and some annoyances from fellow guests but that’s not the hotel’s fault. Hiccups:- A couple of weeks prior to arriving we contacted the hotel to advise that our son had a severe life threatening nut allergy and also could we have adjoining rooms. We got an email saying can’t guarantee the rooms but would do their best and that our son needed to see the chef to talk about his Gluten problem. Gluten problem? I went back to the hotel and they said oops sorry, same scenario speak to chef. Fredrick the Chef and in fact all chefs in the restaurants were outstanding in meeting my son’s allergy issues, well done. Special mention to Ingrid in the Japanese restaurant who made a fabulous and memorable night for the group she was cooking for. We arrived at midday and Sharmania? On reception checked us in and said our rooms were still being serviced but if we came back at 2.30-3.00 they would be ready and he confirmed we had adjoining rooms. Arrived back at reception at 3.00 to complete the checking in process with Adrian and he gave us the keys to 3206 and 3228. ‘These don’t seem to be adjoining rooms’ No they are not but they are on the same floor. Where’s Sharmania? He appeared and took over the checking in and asked Adrian why he had moved us? Adrian said he had not and then they carried on talking in Creole. After waiting a further 20 minutes Sharmania gave us 3205 and 3206 and off we went. They were not adjoining but on opposite sides of the corridor. We gave up Our keys failed to work on a couple of occasions and reception reprogrammed them but on one occasion didn’t both to ask us any security questions relating to our rooms. Worrying! We had a fabulous night in the Platinum restaurant with a wonderful waiter Kelvin who made it special for us so much so that we revisited the restaurant when the menu changed. This time we had a young girl, pleasant enough, took our food order and drinks order for house wine and beer. Starter arrived but no drinks. We asked where the drinks were and they were coming. 2nd course arrived still no drinks and still promises of they were coming. I asked another waitress nearby to get me the manager and the lady said she was the restaurant supervisor and she would chase up the drinks. The main course arrived and still no drinks so that was it I pursued the restaurant supervisor and immediately got our drinks and an apology. Sorry is not good enough, we didn’t bother with dessert and left. Thanks for spoiling our night. We decided to have lunch in the Pizza restaurant one day. From the time our order was taken for food and drink it took 50 minutes for the food to arrive and 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. The restaurant was not busy with only 5 tables occupied. One of our meals was wrong and on the table next to us they also had a wrong meal but they just got up and left the food we having waited 50 minutes ate the incorrect meal. It concerned me that the lifeguards in the water park spent a lot of time chatting instead of doing the job they were paid to do. No problem until something happens. For us the music in the main pool area was too loud and appeared to be the staff choice of music rather than the clients’ choice so we moved to the lovely quiet beach. The mix of guests is such that a number of guests come from countries where people tend to shout at each other rather talk to each other so sometimes we got to enjoy the conversation of people 8 to 10 sunbeds away from us whether we wanted to or not, coupled to this the lack of respect to staff with no please or thank you at times it was irritating. As I said, some training issues, some personal preferences and some annoyances but please don’t let these put you off going to the Jewels Runnaway Bay

High points: water park, beach, pools, variety of dining venues.

3 generations of my family visited Dec 30—Jan 7. This is a really fun place, especially for children. There are two major pools plus a water park. Our 3 year old enjoyed the shallow pool and the slides and shallow pool in the water park, and kids camp one morning. Our 7 year old enjoyed finding friends, playing at the beach (really nice clean sand in and out of the water until rocks of a small reef were reached gradually at about 5-6 feet in depth), in the hammocks, swimming in each of the pools, and all the slides, qualifying for the big ones at her height of 48”. She also chose to go to the kids camp for a major part of two days, during the latter part of the week when it rained. Two of us took a brief catamaran ride with one of the skippers. 2-3 of us played pocket billiards twice. There are at least 2 pools tables and 2 pingpong tables, but I suspect the holiday season plus a few days of rain caused tables to be hard to access without a wait most of the time. Several of us enjoyed relaxing on a beach chair. There were always beach chairs available, as well as abundant shade of palm trees and umbrellas—and sun, too, if preferred. There was no risk of losing out on a spot by waiting to “reserve” a chair. And the beach is really big, so one doesn’t have to tip-toe between rows of chairs. I enjoyed volleyball: the sand court was active almost all day with players 8—68 years old, and this group was always willing to take any additional player (up to 6 a side, and if 12 or more were present, rotate in the extras equally). Though there were several very good players, this isn’t tournament volleyball, but nobody expects that. We took our golf clubs, but there we were having so much fun, we did not play. Staff indicated that there is no reason to make tee reservations, despite what I had read in advance. There are tennis courts and a good basketball hoop, but they didn't appear to see much action. Food options are numerous. We tried them all, and all have pros and cons. I suggest trying each early to decide what you like. Best to get to Italian restaurant when it opens, if not 5-10 minutes before, to avoid a wait. Japanese restaurant is entertaining, perhaps especially for kids, so get a reservation for a dinner there right away when you arrive. It isn’t sushi, but rather grilled vegetables, rice, beef, chicken, salmon, and shrimp (you can reject any you don’t want). If the grill line is longer than you want for jerk chicken or burgers at noon one day, go somewhere else. The pizza place was never too busy, and we all liked it. The buffet is certainly the easiest for a diverse group’s tastes, and never a wait, with flexible hours. Evening entertainment was good. My main complaint there was our early bedtimes (too young and too old) didn’t allow us to remain and listen after dinner. Like everyone else on this site, I was thrilled with how really nice all the staff were. Comparing to the reviews of the two Beaches resorts in Jamaica, and competition in DR and Turks/Caicos, I am glad I chose this one for an all inclusive family vacation. I advise against making the mistake I made: booking rooms 9 months in advance for the Christmas holidays anticipating that I could reduce the nights once I knew for sure who could come exactly when. When August arrived and family had committed to their work/vacation schedules, I learned that my reservations could not be modified without first cancelling each. But if I did that, no new reservation would be able to be made because the system would show “sold out” for this valuable time. After multiple calls to the USA toll free number and directly to Jamaica, I was rescued by Fayon, who knew how to override the system and save the nights I wanted to retain, and by Shakira, who assured me that it had been done and I truly would have two rooms when we arrived. Sure enough, everything was as promised on arrival, though by this time the per night price was no longer clear, but probably fair. We had water view rooms, and two twin beds were placed conveniently in their parents’ room (with king). The room below ours had a patio with a splash pool surrounded by walls and no view. I was glad we had a deck with a view from the second floor instead. Our king bed was very comfortable. The king in the other room was reportedly extremely saggy and uncomfortable. If it were entirely up to me, I would return—and if I got a bad bed, I would hope to get a replacement. Lesson: Don’t be greedy like I was and reserve more than you need.
