We won’t be coming back to Iberostar
Callinaa,

We just returned from a two-week holiday at Iberostar Punta Cana. This was our third time at this hotel and unfortunately, we won’t be returning. Both, myself and my partner ended up staying in the room with stomach problems. Even now, a few days after being back home, we are still unwell, with horrible stomach cramps and diarrhea. At the buffet restaurants there are antibacterial gel sanitising stations, however, the majority of people don’t use it. I noticed many people were leaving the toilets without washing their hands and then going straight to the restaurant. This is not the hotel’s fault, but certain precautions should be taken. I remember that in one hotel that we stayed in the DR, a member of staff would greet everyone in the restaurant, dispense a small amount of the gel on your hands and then take you to the table. There is also a problem with finding available sun loungers by the pool or on the beach in the morning as some people “reserve” the sun loungers at very early hours. Also, the hotel will try to sell you the membership club. Don’t waste your time. The staff in the restaurants, gardeners, chamber maids, bar staff work very, very hard. They are friendly, always smiling and help you with anything. This holiday had cost us a lot. We were saving for many months, so we could return to this beautiful place which is the Dominican Republic. We may come back to the DR, but next time we will stay elsewhere!

Wedding anniversary dream holiday....

I write this with 3 days left of, what should have been our dream holiday. We booked here after weighing up the reviews and seeing it rated as a 5 star resort. It wasn't cheap but as it was a special treat for us, we saved hard and became more excited as the date approached. I can only echo what the reviewer before me (JulieC) has written. The pool is beyond dirty, there's not even the slightest smell of chlorine and the walls of the pool are covered in black moor and mildew. The pool is only slightly tiled, just around the top the rest is a rough concrete with various lumps missing. There is scum around the edges on occasion and two days ago, it was full of dead mosquito's, which appears to be a bit of a problem here too. Food is not particularly varied and not always cooked thoroughly. We made a reservation at the Mexican restaurant, the service was pretty shabby to say the least, we had to book VERY far in advance for the three restaurants we wanted to try. We went to the American themed one last night, it was very hot - despite the air-conditioning, once seated we waited for 15 minutes before having to ask for water, we was the informed there was no beer available. Half an hour after arrival, no one had been near us again and we decided to leave. I had been feeling very unwell especially, since the day before with the most horrendous upset stomach and I'd had to stay in bed all evening, not even venturing to the buffet to eat, so was hoping to feel a little better that evening. As we got up to leave, a young male waiter asked us where we were going and when we said we were leaving he became quite rude. The manager then appeared and begged us to stay so we decided to give them another chance which we hoped would be better. It wasn't. My starter was cold, my husband's chicken was still pink. It was then we decided enough was enough and left. We went to the buffet, via the loo's, where I ate a slice of plain pizza and went back to our room. My husband decided to cancel our next reservation at the Oriental Restaurant for tomorrow (Thursday) evening as we'd heard poor reviews of this place too. He spoke to the lady at reception who asked who'd booked the reservation for us as the restaurant was in fact closed that night. It was the same lady. So, had we turned up tomorrow, expecting to eat there, we'd be disappointed yet again as despite the same lady reserving it for us, it wasn't even open. As I sit here, on what I have to say, is a VERY comfy, spacious bed, I feel sad for what we could've had for our money. Don't get me wrong, the surroundings are beautiful, the beach definitely has a seaweed problem ( obviously not the hotels fault) out of the very many staff there have been about 4 or 5 who have been rude or miserable, the rest are incredibly lovely from the chamber maids, gardeners, pool staff, bar staff - everyone. The people make the place, but please be aware, this place should never be classed as five star. We are staying in room 6020, ground floor, close to reception but a bit of a trek to the pool/beach. Great air-conditioning, lovely big bed, OK shower, really confusing light switches and only two plug sockets for the whole room. Can't switch the bathroom light off!

Not a 5 Star Hotel, barely 2 Star

For a ‘five star resort’ this has too many problems. For positivity, the beach is lovely, the staff are generally very helpful and most try their best. We had been to the DR a couple of years ago and loved it - glad to be coming back again. On recommendation we chose the Iberostar PuntaCana and were initially very pleased to be here. The staff were friendly, and wanted to help. We were assigned a room on the ground floor as my wife has mobility issues, and all appeared to be good. There was a squeaky roof fan in the room which was ‘fixed’ by turning the speed down. We are halfway through our second week, and yet to be able to turn the bathroom light out. The other roof fan we are unable to turn off, so have resorted to reversing its direction to stop getting too cold. There are also specialist Restuarant’s on site - Mexican, Oriental, Gourmet, Star Rock, American steakhouse if you don’t like the buffet. However (and there should be no ‘howevers’ on a 5-star resort), the pool is full of scuzzy where it hasn’t been cleaned properly - proper embedded scuzzy where it hasn’t been cleaned in the past properly. The only visible cleaning they do is of the top (exposed) rows of tiling - forgetting that the scuzz they clean off goes straight back in the pool. There are patches of bird droppings, hair , broken concrete and no plan to fix the pools. There are broken lights under the water exposing dangerous wiring, and filters that don’t appear to do anything. There have also been instances of people peeing and defacating in the pool and around it, with no intervention from the staff. There is no board telling anyone the results of water testing (pH levels etc) and no way of knowing that anyone is actually cleaning the three pools at all. These pools all need to be closed, fully refurbished with new tiles, concrete and a proper filtration system to confirm that the water is of the cleanest possible. Right now all they are doing is allowing mosquitoes to flourish. The other ‘however’ is that during our stay (we leave on Sunday) due to health problems (diarrhoea) we’ve stopped eating the pork, beef or chicken in any of the restaurants due to chronic undercooking. The pork I took from the buffet last night was red raw inside despite the outside being ‘cooked’. Both my wife and I are only eating food that we are certain has been cooked properly - not very many things, which gets boring on a two-week holiday. We booked to eat in three of the specialist restaurants- the Mexican, the Star Rock and the Oriental. The food in the Mexican was OK, but there was no organisation of the staff, some of whom appeared to not care about their customers. The Star Rock was even worse, in that we had to ask someone after 15 minutes for water...we made to leave after 30 minutes as no-one had taken an order, and after being persuaded to stay by the Manager (the waiter having been rude to us) some starters were provided quickly - both not hot, and both not cooked. We decided to cancel the appointment for the Oriental - when I was in reception cancelling it, it was pointed out that my reservation made no sense as the restaurant was closed at this time. The person asked me who had reserved it, and I confirmed that they had. Terrible organisation, terrible food. We may come back to the Dominican Republic, but on the basis of this visit, we’ll not be coming back to an Iberostar hotel. Not considering the cost of getting here, and for an extra £100 or so we could have gone to the Ocean Blue & Sand up the beach which is excellent. This hotel is not excellent by any means - two or three star at most. All Trip Advisor commenters get on here is a standard ‘Sorry but we’ll do better’ replies from management, but I am glad we went to the nearby Ocean Blue & Sand prior to this holiday, so we could see what a proper five star hotel looks like. Attached are pictures of the scuzz in the pools and ponds around the hotel. Despite further cleaning, they still remain unacceptably dirty and potential places for disease and health concerns to start.

I am currently on holiday with my husband coming to the end of our two weeks in Iberostar Punta Cana... We will be glad to get home now. Since arriving we have had diarrhoea constantly & put it down to the change in food, water (although not able to drink it it is used in washing salad fruit etc) we also thought it might be the milk, amount of fruit or the sun!! Everything seemed clean some of the staff were lovely.. Receptionists, Samuel (bell boy) Rabanita in the restaurant, the bar staff, waiters/waitresses, animation team..Shanty was so funny to watch. We noticed the pool was cleaned daily... Inside, the walls were scrubbed!! Not sure what was in the bottle they cleaned them with, Sweeping up often, clearing cups, glasses etc so no complaints there. At the start of our second week we noticed the 'pool lads' had gone there was mould and green/black algae growing in the pool, scum floating on the surface and general bits laying around. On 2 occasions we spotted parents taking their youngsters into the pool to pee!!! And one who just stood on the side to do it into the pool only to be told 'it's only water' we reported a lump of poo on the edge of the pool...a small table was placed over it till the cleaner came!! Not in the 8 hours we were there!! We have gone through 2 bottles of peptic bismol and a box of imodium but still couldn't stop 'going' anyway we decided we were going to enjoy our last holiday abroad... due to my health... We ventured to the BBQ for lunch where they had big pans of half cooked meat, chicken, veg waiting to finish cooking to your liking and put into rolls, it smelt delicious but I'm a bit fussy about reheated chicken which was reheated in the wok with your choice of veg for approx 3 minutes but we were put off more by the amount of flies buzzing around and on the open food. I'm not usually a moaner but this holiday was a lot of money that was hard work to get and we wanted to have happy, special memories. We ate mainly in the buffet restaurants but did visit the Mexican, Oriental and rock star ones but didn't return for a second visit. Our last 2 days are being spent by the pool, the beach being too difficult for my wheelchair... Yes there are disabled seating reserved next to the walkway but they were always taken by non wheelchair users by 8am as was the rest of the sunbeds on the beach and there was nobody to move them in fact when we mentioned this to a member of staff we were told the majority of the sunbeds were taken by 6am every day, also the sea was full of seaweed so it was too difficult for me too get through it.... Not the fault of the hotel but nothing was said about this when we booked (on recommendation by the travel agent who said she had been here and it was suitable for all my health needs). One last thing before I go for lunch if you're thinking of visiting remember your mosquito repellant for body and room... these and other medicines are very expensive over here hubby got bitten and had a bad reaction which needed medication costing around £34 for a tube of ointment!! imodium was £28 for 12tablets so best stock up before you come. On the plus side the bar staff work very hard to keep your drinks flowing...if you tip them...it is expected and on one occasion we were actually asked for a tip by a young man helping us into a coach ( we would have tipped if given chance). Anyway we are determined to enjoy today and tomorrow whatever so of to the buffet we go.

A last minute booking which met all our expectations. A lovely hotel set in well kept grounds stretching down to the white sandy beach and warm Caribbean Sea. The hotel although a little tired in places was very clean throughout. Staff could be seen keeping the public areas clean at all times and we could not fault our room. Positives: Great position on the shore with only a short journey from the airport. Lovely staff who were cheerful and done all they could to help us enjoy our holiday. An enjoyable evening entertainment with a choice of venue as you can choose between the Punta Cana or Dominicanan next door. Always a good selection of food in the Buffet restaurant, there were special restaurants to book, we found the Steak, Gourmet, Fish and Red Rock were very good. The salmon in the Fish restaurant was cooked to perfection. The pools were sparkling clean and never overcrowded. Negatives: A lack of fluent English spoken which proved to be a problem if your issue was not normal, in our case the door lock failing but reception kept wanting to change the door card even though we knew the lock itself was faulty and it took 2.45 hours to access our room late at night. The sea weed was annoying although they were very good at clearing it away and being a natural thing they could not control it, pick your time of the day and you could have an enjoyable swim. The room staff did not always complete the job and we had to chase to get the missed items such as water and flannels. Overall: We were welcomed from the moment we arrived and had a great holiday and we look forward to returning soon. Staff do their upmost to ensure you have an enjoyable time and its totally relaxing
