Our stay at Iberostar Cozumel
LYNN W.
Mar 08 2019
Our week at Iberostar was absolutely great! The staff are friendly and super helpful.... they really work hard to make your stay exceptional! The food and service in each restaurant was always to our liking and a wide variety was always available. The hotel rooms were fun in that they are separate "bungalows" with a balcony and hammock. The beds were a little dated but all the other aspects of our vacation made this very unimportant to us. The beach was great and the pools are so relaxing and never too busy. We definitely want to return again. We cannot wait to come back!

Honestly, we dont even want to waste our time rewriting our complaints. We have given a complaint to our travel agent, the onstaff Apple vacations rep at the resort and our complaints have been submitted to Apple. Worst travel/trip experience weve had in our 6 years to the playa Del Carmen/Cozumel/Riveria Maya area! Did not get the trip we paid for, not even close. So much lost time complaining with no results. We feel that our group of 8 were treated asjust a number and do not plan to return to an iberostar.

This is a little difficult to judge because we actually ended up at two different resorts. I will say this, Iberostar Cozumel was not too bad for the price we paid. Staff was friendly. HOWEVER! Midway through our vacation the water and AC went out at the hotel. We were asked to move to Iberostar Maya which we accepted. They paid for our transportation. When we arrived at Iberostar Maya the run around began. We were told we were being moved to Iberostar Del Mar but that we would have access to the rest of the resort and we would have dinner reservations every night. (we were Star Prestige at the original resort) This was a lie!!! FLAT OUT LIE. We received no supper reservations at all. NOT ONE! We tried but were always told they were booked. So now were are stuck at the furthest building away from everything and stuck eating buffet type food every night. NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED AT ALL, NOT WHAT WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE AGREED TO MOVBE AND NOT WHAT WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE ARRIVED AT IBEROSTAR MAYA. We go somewhere every year. Last year we used Delta Vacations. In the past we have used Apple and I believe once we used FunJet. This whole experience left me doubting if we will ever return to an Iberostar and left me questioning if we would use Apple Vacations again. We will see what the report we filed with our travel agent does. We wasted a day of our vacation being moved from one resort to another (which we agreed to) only to have a the main part of the day wasted with the messy check in and chasing around with the concierge trying to get the reservations we were promised. Normally we are very easy going people that do not complain about much but that whole day was wasted and the rest of the stay was less than enjoyable. Hope fully someone can do something to change the way this mess is handled in the future and give me answers to why we never recieved what was promised. Extremely disappointed group of 8 travelers.

Excellent choice for an all inclusive dive trip to Cozumel. Full dive shop services dock and boats located at hotel. So nice to get up and walk to dock from your room and hop on the boat! Great staff. Good for large dive groups.

We were enjoying our stay however a few nights in the air conditioning and water went out at the resort making it not a comfortable stay. We were then transferred to a different iberostar resort and got downgraded from our star prestige package to the lowest hotel on the resort . Again multiple calls had to be made because the room wasn't cooling. The last night the air didn't work at all. We had a lot of hassle at this resort as well and lost a lot of travel time which was a huge disappointment. We were promised dinner reservations and never received any at all, again another huge disappointment. I personally would stay at another resort next time I travel.

We had a great time. It was a change for us since we usually go to resorts that resemble hotels. We enjoyed this resort because of the flora and fauna throughout the resort. The food was top notch compared to other resorts we have been to. Our room was clean and the maid service did a great job of making sure we had clean towels and restocked our refrigerator when needed. One downside to the resort was the beach area. The beach was very rocky so it wasn't easy to get out into the water without tripping or stubbing a toe. My wife and I have told our friends we would not hesitate going back to this resort.

My wife enjoyed the resort smaller than past resorts so easier to get around. Staff was excellent and cleanliness or resort was excellent! Plan on returning to resort and bringing more friends! The 2 other couples we traveled with also expressed desire to return. They were happy with stay and enjoyed the resort.

I most definitely would come back to this resort. The entertainment was amazing (& included). I will say that the wifi was slow, and a lot of the same meals were served along with the lastest the bars are open was 1am, but I had so much fun.

This resort was just an average experience for my family and I. The cons... make sure to bring a damp rid with you if you stay here. The rooms were so musty! It was a disgusting smell and took weeks to get the smell out of all of our clothes and my hair when we got back to the states. Not a pleasant smell to be in for an entire week. Another poor thing was the food. It was just mediocre and was not a lot of variety. The Chinese restaurant was disgusting and the Mexican restaurant was just okay. Another con was the mattress on the bed, extremely hard and uncomfortable!! Another thing everyone should be aware at when stay at the Iberostar in Cozumel, is that you cannot enter the ocean from the beach due to all of the sharp correl. They have a pier which you can walk out to and take the stairs down into the ocean. Kind of a bummer that you cannot sit on the beach right by the water or walk directly to the ocean from the beach! Pros.... the pool was really nice and big and the swim up bar was good too. The resort was child friendly and had a shallow pool for the kids. I did really like the layout of the hotel. It was easy to find your way around. The staff was very kind and helpful.

We had a great time.

We first stayed and dived at this resort in 2012. I was very reluctant to return, but my partner was keen so I agreed to give it another go. He signed up for the Prestige: you get a separate cordoned off area with a super tiny pool and too few sun beds that are not in the shade. There is a small AC indoor area with couch, some food, and an espresso machine. We got tons of booze in our room and fruit plates. You also don’t need a towel card to use the towels there. Supposedly you get a ‘special’ check in and check out but that isn’t true. In fact, we asked about our departure time and transit and the woman at Prestige had no idea what we were talking about. Kids are allowed at the Prestige and one time, a couple kids threw a temper tantrum resulting in 6 guests leaving the area. On top of that, for several days, we got to listen to aggressive sales people pushing other guests to buy timeshares. The sun beds are on the beach without any shade and there are too few of them. However, the air conditioned space is nice and they have great bathrooms with showers. I think the Prestige is a super idea but right now, it isn’t worth the money. They haven’t quite got it right yet. Our room was nice and not musty smelling like some other guests have complained on this site and to me in person at the resort. We got our bed requests, the beds were comfy, and there was no problem getting extra pillows. The towels and washcloths seemed new, hot water was fairly instant, there was a small coffee maker and fridge in the room with large bottles of water. The fan and AC worked really well and the room was clean. At certain times of the day, the shower could go from very hot to very cold and back again. Lighting in the bathroom was great, with shelving, a real hair dryer, make up mirror, and full length mirror on the back of the door. A safe, lots of hangers and shelves in the closet and a 3 drawer cabinet. I didn’t like the shampoo but I brought my own. The only meat we eat is chicken and last time, we had a challenging time finding food to eat as even the veggies seemed to have meat or fish/seafood in them. This time, I had no problem. There always seemed to be chicken and there were a lot of vegetables. One lunch I had problems finding food as most of the meat seemed to be beef and there were few veggies so it was pizza and mashed potatoes. It would be nice if the taco section always had a pan of hot grilled veggies so vegetarians could enjoy the soft tacos. We ate at the Mexican restaurant once and were underwhelmed. I brought my water bottle which was very handy as there are ice machines and water easily available. Room cleaning was fine. However one day, we left a 2 dollar tip and returned to our dirty room to find one dollar gone. Then later, we returned, room still not cleaned, and our grapes were gone but no other fruit. Very strange. Most of our time was spent diving and I am sad to say, there wasn’t much to see. I spoke with a couple who has been diving this area for years and they said the decline in life is quite bad. We were lucky to see one thing on each dive (a single turtle, an eagle ray off in the distance, a lobster, a barracuda, a large crab) but often, just a few fish. If you’re into coral, then you won’t be disappointed as the coral is really healthy. There are a lot of interesting swim-throughs if that’s your thing. The groups are usually 8 people plus one guide. They went too fast for us; but the guides are excellent and tried to accommodate our request of going slower so we could poke around. Briefings were thorough and boats are nice with an onboard WC. It does get a bit squishy on the boats. The water temperature was 27, I wore my skin only and was fine. The boat crew was great and helped if you needed it. You lug and clean your own equipment here. Nitrox is free which was awesome. You have to work hard to get them to give you the same guide each time. The beach looks nice and as others have said, people get up early to claim sun beds and then don’t bother using them for hours; even at the Prestige. We’ve been to other resorts where this is banned and it works perfectly fine so I'm not sure why they don't ban it here. Nights were silent and the grounds beautiful with peacocks roaming about. The staff were awesome and hard working. I’d consider returning but only if I was guaranteed a room that wasn’t musty smelling.

Lots to do

The animators did a great job keeping the energy level high and getting everyone involved, and the shows were very inclusive and entertaining. Big shoutout to Margarita and Edgar who went out of their way to make sure my kids had fun. My 13-year-old son also enjoyed the kids club and Ismael and Lisa showed him a great time. It was nice to snorkel right off the hotel beach and we enjoyed the food as well. Great trip!

My wife and I just returned from here, our second visit. We absolutely loved it and had a fantastic time! First, the service and people there are friendly, warm and go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. Everyone is calm, peaceful, attentive and sweet, yet work very hard to make sure you have a pleasant stay and that every detail is taken care of. During our ten day stay, we never heard one cross word or encountered one bad attitude. We weren't aggravated once by anyone or anything! While everyone was awesome, Wilbert stood out as the greatest server (breakfast and lunch) you could have! Every morning, he brought me my tea just the way I liked it and had our table ready for us at lunch the second he saw us walk in. What a great guy! Overall, the resort is beautiful and meticulously taken care of. Every bush, tree and piece of vegetation is trimmed and well taken care of. The buildings and grounds are beautiful and well designed. The pool and beach areas are beautiful and so pleasing to the eye. At night, I really enjoyed the lighting throughout the resort. It also helps that the weather was perfect the entire time and the water was warm and clean. For me, what really makes this resort stand out is the diving. If you are a diver, you can't beat having the Dressel Divers dive shop right there. The reefs are all located from a few minutes to less than a 15 minute boat ride from the pier. Between each dive, we get to come back to the resort, take a short break, and go back out. The staff and dive masters are awesome. Julia behind the counter as well as the two other ladies (I forget their names) did an excellent job of booking our dives and are friendly, warm and attentive. My dive masters (Rodrigo, Fab, Fabrique, Hugo, Michaela) were awesome. They kept us safe and made sure we had a good time. The reefs were amazing and are some of the best reefs in the world to dive. The boat captains and mates were fantastic and even the guys that filled the tanks and took care of the equipment did a great job. You can also get certified here and take advance courses as well (we took the Nitrox Certification). Of all the other divers I talked to, they all said that you could not beat the diving here. Great service, short trips to the reef, great dive masters, and great reefs and diving conditions make it ideal for the diver. One diver said that he has been all over the world diving and always returns to this resort because it is the best. We plan to make this a yearly trip and look forward to going back every winter!

Shame On Iberostar Cozumel
Randy W,
Sat Mar 23 11:31:13 EDT 2019
The Iberostar Cozumel: I am one of the wedding party that was at Iberostar Cozumel from March 6 to the 16th, Due to my job I have the luxury for being able to travel and stay at a lot of these resorts in Mexico and abroad, Its not in my nature to trash resorts that I have stayed but in this case I will make an exception. First let me start with the rooms, they are tiny, the maids only change the sheets maybe once a week, ( I’m still not sure since they didn’t change ours for the full 10 days we spent there) the pillows stank of mildew, (I don’t have an extremely sensitive nose but trust me it was bad) we keep putting them on the balcony to let the sun and fresh air to try to freshen them up but to no avail. We too had to fight for our reservations, we were scheduled to leave on the 16th, on the 11th we went to make dinner reservations and found out that someone either at Iberostar or Apple Vacations, I’m still not sure who was at fault. Changed our departure to the 13th even though our reservation at check in showed the 16th. We spent at least an hour and a half or more for the next three days not knowing if they were just going to kick us out on the 13th. The people behind the counter really didn’t care about our situation. They were saying if its not taken care of than were will have to leave and then go after Apple Vacations for our money back. As stated in another review from my nephew who was getting married there, they didn’t have his father in-laws reservation even though he had all his paperwork showing that he had a room, my nephew and his future wife wound up taking him in their room and his wife stayed at her mothers room for two days until a room was acquired for him after many phone calls. Now Iberostar was so callus about this that they charged my nephew and his wife EXTRA (over three hundred dollars) for him to stay at their room instead of being human about the situation and taking care of him. SHAME ON IBEROSTAR for this unjust and greedy deed they pulled. We had a wedding party of 13 people who went down there, out of 13, five of us had reservation problems. I am not 100% sure but I would have to put the total blame on Iberostar due to how they treated my wife and myself along with my nephews’ father in-law and nephew and his wife. I know this sounds like I am a person who might just be hard to please but nothing more could be closer to the truth, most of the resorts are really great down there, this just isn’t one of them, I would suggest that you look elsewhere when booking your stay, you work hard for your money, treat yourself to somewhere else besides Iberostar Cozumel. Take care and I hope this helps with your choice of where to stay.
