The hotel staff was great and always friendly and very helpful. The added touches like flowers in the room and the special dinner was great. The buffet had lots to choose from but the food quality in the buffet and ala carte restaurants was just ok. The beach, even though the staff did a good job of cleaning up the seaweed needed more attention. I can’t say enough about how good the service was everywhere in the hotel and the maid service was excellent. Improvements in food and the beach would definitely make this a much nicer resort.

Many staff were friendly and well trained, many were not. Frequently the bars did not have the top shelf liquor as advertised. Some bottles had clearly been either diluted or they put a much less costly liquor in the bottle. For example: a bottle of Tanquery Gin at the beach bar was not even Gin. Gin has a very distinct flavor and that was clearly NOT Gin. Frequently when going into the buffet area there were empty tables but they were all still had dirty dishes. Maybe it was a staffing issue, but it seemed that there shouldn't be that many dirty tables during breakfast & dinner service. Consierge Manuel Gonzalez was OUTSTANDING. Very friendly & helpful. He speaks 4 languages and is very informed about the hotel services as well as local areas.

First of all most vacations are what you make of them. 2nd time there probably the last , Hotel overall was O.K. Beach had too much sea weed and the locals who are hired to clean it daily did poor work , Swimming Pool outdated and not properly maintained, Food was O.K. I have been to many Iberostars this time it was not recognized even after I told them a couple times starting at check in Amstar travel products are bonafide tourist traps , As experienced travelers in the D.R. Overall we had a good time on vacation.

The staff were excellent overall but we were disappointed by the cups and trash still by the pool, on the beach and throughout the resort every morning. The Apple Rep misrepresented 2 of our excursions One was a city tour and he told us as long as we had 6 it would be private but we were loaded on a bus with 8 others and he told us the bus ride for one excursion was an hour and it was 2 hrs 20 mins! The beds were incredibly hard . The 3 specialty restaurants were excellent. The liquor was lower end then what we expected and are used to. The fitness center was the best I have seen in 12 years of resorts Overall I would say good medium level inclusive

Hotel room was average, we did upgrade to the ocean view which was nice but all rooms appear to be the same and could use some updating. Being that this on the Atlantic side don't expect the white sand of punta cana, but it is still very nice with palm trees. Big down fall is the lack of beach chairs and condition of them, honestly if you aren't out there at the crack of dawn you need to hunt for one! The food, service and attitude of the staff was excellent! The people working there really did make the stay here worth it.

Overall this was a clean and very friendly place to stay. Beach and pool areas were nice. Some of the entertainment was horrible (my opinion) but some of the shows were a lot of fun. Some of the restaurants good some just okay. We all enjoyed our vacation! A good time was had by all!

Beach could have been cleaner. Food was okay. Not much variety on the buffet so it was kind of repetitive. Very busy on the weekends when the locals came in. We liked the quietness of the Puerta Plata area but the resort is too small if you are staying for longer than a week. We only stayed for 1 show at night. After listening to the first 5 singers for karaoke singing in spanish (they were all local people) we left. Iberostar needs to change their entertainment at night. This is the 5th Iberostar that we stayed at and the shows are almost the same. This is not a 5 golden apple resort. More like a 4 golden apple. We have stayed at 4 red apple resorts that were nicer than this one.

Exceptionally clean! The staff is friendly, young and very helpful! I have never seen a place where everyone works so hard to ensure that you are taken care of and happy. I had to touch the grass to see if it was real ! The views from every room ( garden/ocean) is beautiful . I felt very secure on this resort. Just the right size ... Not too big ...easy to walk... Especially for the elderly . Highly recommend . Thank you for a beautiful vacation . Larry from Amerstar was special !

I stayed there for a week and this was the most relaxing vacation. I did not have to worry about anything. My favourite part about this resort was the quality of food. Th buffet was the best. There was a lot of variety and each night had a theme. The food was fresh and the chefs were very accommodating. Gabriel was very friendly and always checking in to see if we were enjoying our meals. This was really appreciated. The resort was clean and right on the beach. I would definetly stay at the same resort again. Great for couples, friends or families.

Great food! Clean resort

We had a lovely stay. The rooms and resort was clean. One thing I would have to say was my favourite was the food. The chefs took the time to cater to the needs of the guest? Especially Gabriel. I had a food allergy and he went out of his way to make accomadations. The food was fresh and lots of variety. I especially enjoyed watching the bbq on the beach. Would stay here again just food the food alone.

Ibero-stars again!

Located approx. 20 minutes from the airport amidst tropical surroundings is the Iberostar Costa Dorada. Here my family of 5 enjoyed a great one-week vacation. This is a beautiful beachfront property with immaculate-kept grounds, well-manicured gardens and even an orchard garden! Decorative fountains and ponds as well as peacocks and flamingoes grace the property. Nine, three-storey buildings offer its guests simple-furnished rooms with either garden, pool or oceanfront rooms. The distinctive blue and white covered arched walkway, which connects all the buildings to the lobby and restaurants (except for the El Bohio beach/poolside restaurant), reflects somewhat of a colonial-Spanish architecture. The Iberostar Costa Dorada being a smaller resort, does not require a tram to get from one place to another. From the lobby to the restaurants, pool and beach, everything is a short walk away. OUR ROOMS We had two rooms on the ground level in Building 2. Although I requested adjacent or adjoining pool view rooms with three beds in one room and a king in the other, we received two garden view rooms facing the Be Live Marion resort next door. The room with the three beds was perfect for the boys as they could each have their own bed. The extra bed was a full size bed and not the customary, fold away cot! However the Iberostar did not quite get it right with the king size bed request for our room! Instead my husband and I received two double beds. We talked to reception and they ended up pushing our two beds together. Not quite a king but it looked like one! Housekeeping did an excellent job keeping our room clean and decorated. We had no issues of mold or mustiness in either of our rooms. Upon arrival our curtains were tied artistically together and each day a different towel art and red flower petals brightened up the bed and the bathroom. Our rooms were equipped with a bar size fridge stocked daily with Presidente beer, water and soda. A coffee maker, safe, iron, ironing board and hair dryer were also available in our rooms. Our patios were furnished with a small table, two chairs, and a drying rack. Our rooms were nothing fancy and somewhat outdated but the beds were comfortable. The safe in our room did not work well (the door kept getting stuck) and the bar fridge in the boys room kept drinks cool, but not cold. If you want to charge your phone or plug in your laptop, there is only one Type A plug in the bathroom. The other plugs in the room are recessed, so a phone charger would not even fit in it! A Type A (2-prong) power bar or an extension cord is needed if you want to plug in more than one device. Type B (3-prong) receptacles are available in the lobby. THE POOL In the centre of the resort is a large pool surrounded by tropical palapas with plenty of lounge chairs. With a swim up bar, a centre Jacuzzi surrounded by columns as well as water activities such as volleyball and basketball available at all times, the pool was a great place to swim, sit back and relax, grab a drink or have fun! At night, the pool turned into a colourful oasis, beautifully illuminated with blue, green and red lights. For the children, a small circular wading pool is nearby. The pools are opened from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. THE BEACH Just steps away from the pool was a beautiful golden-sand, tropical beach. Between palapas, tall swaying coconut palms and tropical trees we never had a problem finding lounge chairs in the shade for the 5 of us! With a constant and cooling sea breeze, it was very comfortable to escape the heat and just relax on the beach. Moreover with the beach bar, and the beach/pool restaurant nearby it was always easy to grab a drink or something to eat! Entering the water, there were some coral rocky areas to skirt around and seaweed washing up on the shore was a slight issue too--but staff worked hard to clean up the seaweed and bury it under the sand. We walked down the beach towards Playa Dorada and the Grande Paradise and noticed that seaweed was a non-issue down there, so the problem with seaweed in the Costa Dorada area could be due to sea currents. WATERSPORTS Watersports including kayaks and small windsurfing catamarans were available from Dressel Divers and could be signed out complimentary for one hour a day. However, it was difficult to get a chance to actually sign out a catamaran as Dressel Divers would not let the cats go out if they determined the wind was too strong or if it looked like it was going to rain. They had two catamarans available, but one of them was buried deep in the sand and looked like it had not touched the water for a while! Because they only had one cat running, we could not all go out together. Instead only two of my sons got a chance to go out and when they returned, the winds were again too strong and that was the end of any more sailing for the duration of our stay! What I also found strange was that no one from Dressel Divers helped to push the catamaran out into the water or assisted in bringing it back in again. Other resorts, always had someone assisting with this. DINING & AL LA CARTES The food at the Iberostar was very good and all food was made fresh. El Mercado, the main buffet, open-air restaurant, was opened for breakfast and dinner and offered a satisfying selection of cuisine with a different theme each night. El Bohio, the beach/poolside thatched roof restaurant was opened for late breakfast, lunch and late afternoon snacks which included hamburgers, hot dogs and fries. A self-serve soft ice-cream machine is also located here. The Iberostar offered three al la carte restaurants in which advance reservations are required: La Hacienda (Mexican), Sakura (Japanese) and Rodizio (Mediterranean, formerly Brazilian). From these restaurants only the La Hacienda and Sakura were air-conditioned. Three al la carte reservations are supposed to be guaranteed for a one week stay, however when we tried to make our reservations the following morning after we checked in, we were told they only had two dates available. It was disappointing that even with two rooms, three al la carte reservations during our one week stay could not be accommodated. The Iberostar should not be guaranteeing 3 al la carte reservations for a one week stay, if they cannot follow through with this. We choose the Japanese and Mediterranean restaurants. The Sakura is a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant complete with an entertaining chef. On certain nights the El Bohio beach/poolside restaurant turns into the Mediterranean restaurant. Whereas the Sakura restaurant served a lot of food, the Mediterranean restaurant offered a smaller food serving but also included an open buffet. The food at both al la cartes was very good. However, the individual al la carte restaurants were not opened every day. I noticed the La Hacienda was only opened twice during our stay and when the Mediterranean restaurant was opened, the Japanese one was closed. This likely contributes to why we were unable to make 3 al la carte reservations. There is also a dress code in effect for the al la carte restaurants, with dress shorts acceptable for men. All dining closed at 10:00 pm, with late night snacks served in the La Hacienda restaurant from 11:00 pm – 7:00 am. Since it was almost 10:00 pm before we checked in, we enjoyed drinks in the La Fuente lobby bar until the La Hacienda restaurant opened on island time, after 11:00. Grilled hamburgers, beef and chicken was made to order with fries, salads and nachos available. ACTIVITIES Star Friends offers an activity program that runs every day from 8:00-4:30. As no schedule of activities was handed out or left in the room, we did not know what all was available. It wasn’t until the end of the week, before I noticed a picture board next to the poolside towel hut showing the daily activities. We always exchanged our towels from the beach side of the towel hut, so never saw this sign! Activities ranged from beach and pool volleyball, aerobics and pool games to bingo, archery, rifle shooting and dance class. Poolside are ping pong tables and a giant chess board. The Spa and Fitness Centre are located behind building #9. NIGHTLY ENTERTAINMENT The Iberostar offers live nightly entertainment starting at 9:30 pm in the outdoor covered theatre. Shows varied between singers and dancers, performances by the entertainment team and audience participation. Overall the entertainment was good, however I did not care as much for the audience participation shows as these shows were usually designed for mature audiences only and were not appropriate for families. The better shows were the music and dancing performances such as the Lion King, Circle of Life which was very well done! The entertainment operates on a 2-week schedule, so if you are staying longer than one week, you will not see the same show twice! The day we left a Michael Jackson show was going to be performed—we were disappointed that we missed that. I would have much rather seen this show, then an audience participation one! IBEROSTAR VS IBEROSTAR This was our second time staying at an Iberostar. The first time we stayed at the Iberostar Hacienda Domnicus in Bayahibe. The Iberostar Costa Dorada is smaller and although it was still very nice, it was not as fancy as the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus. Nightly turn down service and a printed schedule of activities and events including all the beach barbeques which was provided at the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus was not provided here. At the Costa Dorada our drapes were only tied together artistically upon arrival, but at the Hacienda Dominicus they were tied together differently on a daily basis. Also we were hounded by the Vacation club people in Bayahibe where we were left alone here. And lastly, we were able to book our three al la carte reservations prior to arrival at the Hacienda Dominicus whereas at the Costa Dorada we booked once we arrived and then could not even get the guaranteed number of reservations. The nightly shows were better at the Iberostar Costa Dorada. Despite the differences in service and the few setbacks, the tropical beach, lush grounds, beautiful surroundings, good food, premium drinks and Wi-Fi throughout the resort, all contributed to a great vacation. I would not hesitate to book with Iberostar again.

Poor standards now.

Very disappointing return to this hotel after 15 years. Staff were just wanting tips all the time. Everything about the place had gone downhill, service, food, accommodation not at all happy with spending a lot of money on such s poor holiday.. would not recommend to others. Too many issues to mention.

Aging Resort Offers Some Value But...

We visited as a family in July 2018. Have been to an Iberostar Resort in Puerto Vallarta and loved it, so gave this a shot. Got a great price for a week stay, and I must say that there is still some value in going to this older resort. With that in mind, here are my gripes: Decor is definitely showing its age. Japanese restaurant doesn't serve Sake?! C'mon, it's a Japanese restaurant! Beach had a lot of seaweed, although they tried hard to clean it up. Beach vendors were very aggressive. Literally had 3 within a 50 yard stroll with the wife. We just wanted to be left alone for a romantic walk! Pool was under maintenance for over a day. Don't know what happened but they had to drain it, and when it reopened, still was a but scummy. The sell on their premium club got pretty annoying. No thanks means no thanks means no thanks! Some employees seemed disinterested in their jobs. We aren't picky, and we DO TIP, so thought we might get some more smiles... Overall, the trip was still good. If you can get a good price, it's still worth it to do once. I probably wouldn't do it again though. I haven't given up on the chain though...going to try Jamaica next year. Hopefully it will be more like Mexico.
