Exterior Great - Rooms Mediocre - Noisy

I had high expectations for this hotel. We stayed 3 days. The exterior really IS what they show in their photos; beautiful gardens, and pool area - like I was in a tropical jungle resort. The deer and bird life is actually there - I even saw a sloth in the trees - to see things like that is an added bonus on any vacation. The pool area bar is actually 24 hrs, so that was an added plus. The bar staff was fantastic. Good drinks but I did ask a couple times for a Dirty Martini, from their drink menu list, and each time they said they couldn't make it? Whaaaa?! The drink menu is a bit misleading. But if you don't drink - then no worries to you. Keep in mind this is an old hotel. There are photos of it being in a 1930ish movie in their hallway. So with this said, there of course will be issues with any old hotel. They were renovating the rooms and other areas of the hotel when my group arrived. No mention of this to us - being on our floor - when we spoke with the front desk about booking. That's definitely very unprofessional. But I guess they wanted to make sure they got our money. Albeit, the front desk was very cordial, non-transparent and a bit artificial. In the building in which we stayed, they were working on the elevator and door locks on all the rooms on our floor. Banging, talking, yelling, laughing and mechanical loud noises started at 7:30 am in the morning from the maintenace and cleaning staff. Can you believe that? At a 4-5 star hotel? Where people are trying to relax and have some peace and quiet on vacation? - in which they spent their hard earned money? This hotel really needs some serious basic 101 hospitality training. Also, to add, there was street construction being done outside and below our hotel window, which added to the noise of that place. Awful. If you book here, invest in some good ear plugs. Wi-Fi was sorta a joke. Kept logging us out and we having to keep logging in again with our passport and room number. How annoying is that every 30 mins? Least it did work strong once logged in. Fix the freaking Wi-Fi people. Like it or not, your guests desire that to work - it's 2018. The rooms are blah to say the least. Decently clean. Absolutely nothing modern or fresh in my opinion. Just an outdated generic room. Beds were comfortable though. Our room key didn't work 3 times, so 3 times we had to go all the way back down and around the bend to the front desk to get a new programmed key. :/ Breakfast by the bar was really nice. Busy in the AM; a nice array of breakfast staples. Tip: Ask for bacon or they hide it from you. Coffee is not great. Tip: Get early to the pool area to save yourself a spot cause they go quickly very early in the morning. They claim to have their own private beach area, but they don't. It's just a closed off area sorta near the public beach - that has some cabanas and a bar. You still have to walk to the public beach and be molested by the street vendors and so-called masseuses. Don't fall for it. Just stay at the pool. You'll be happier. When we checked out and spoke with the front desk about the noise, they basically shrugged it off with a fake smile of concern and told us to write a review online so they can improve in the future. Really? I probably won't stay here again. There are much better respectful hotels in the area. But if you want to see some deer and a sloth, this is your spot!

Nice and clean hotel, people very helpful and friendly, will stay there again if I go back. The building itself is old but remodeled, lots of greens and gardens which is beautiful. The beach part of the hotel is clean and nice, about 30 steps to the water.

Stayed there from 2/11/18 to 2/18/18. This is original and first hotel to be on the Bocagrande strand, about 3-4 miles SW, It is architecturally grand, but its grounds are even better, added to over 70+ years. Caribe is a whole compound, acres of walkways and gardens, fenced and. with security at all gates, even the one to cross street to beach. White elevated walkways throughout, and like a zoo. We counted four different deer, two Scarlett Macaws, two Toucans, multiple green parrots, and all but the deer frequent pool and breakfast areas. You can run up 4000 on your Fitbit just exploring the hanging gardens and elevated pillared walkways. Hotel has multiple eating areas around a central "kitchen" and stone pizza oven ($120,000 Columbian pesos for two with drinks, about $40-42) but you can eat for 1/3 that cost at sidewalk restaurants within a block, many more within three blocks. The Caribbean Beach is across from front entrance, though a beach walk is better early or late to avoid the endless vendors. No beach shells, or even debris. The hotel changes money at 2500 Columbian Pesos to a dollar,, but you can get 6% more at a kiosk a block away, or a bank. A taxi to the walled city from the hotel entrance is 7000 in day, as much as 9000 at night, and they always drop you off inside the wall at the beach. The walled city has 100x to 200x the balconies of the French Quarter in New Orleans, and quite a bit more elegant, Wear walking shoes, not flip-flops -- it is very big! As is well-known, vendors are everywhere, and haggling will reduce price at least 30% in thirty seconds. Neither of us spoke Spanish, but got by just fine with vendors. Just avoid any vendor who offers to "show you the way"you how to get somewhere. OTHER: Only minor issue was Hotel Caribe's rooms had neither microwaves nor coffee pots! Take instant and use rather hot tap water (the tap water was healthy), but avoid drinks sold by vendors on sidewalks we were told. The trip cost about $1100 a week LESS than Aruba or Curacao. There were very few Americans or Canadians around. Felt quite safe even early in the morning, on the beach, but never went to Walled City after dark.

Pool Day Pass Guest

Came here in February with 3 friends to use the pool for the day. We called in advance to ensure that there were day passes (since it was Friday and other hotels were not allowing day guests) and they confirmed. However when we got there, the concierge tried to say that the pool was full and we couldn’t enter, but after explaining I’d called a lady coldly sold us day passes. After that mishap we found 3 super comfortable lounge chairs by the pool and enjoyed a beautiful day by the pool. Included for $48 for our day pass was a welcome drink, a delicious buffet lunch, towels, and access to the pool. I definitely recommend this for visitors to Cartagena looking for a pool who are staying places without one.
