Love the Scents

We came for a wedding and fell in love with this hotel. It's beautiful both inside and out. Lots of attention to aesthetic detail. My husband liked the bed so much he wanted to take it home. Our room overlooked the ocean. However, our friends who had the room overlooking the bay had the better view. I loved the smells. The scent the public areas with a coconut lime scent in one area and leather in another. These scents don't apply in the areas where you sleep. Some staff speak enough English to check in and out and ask easy questions. I found that Google Translate helped a lot. The breakfast is to die for. It is certainly not like we are used to in the states. There is so much fresh food and so many choices. And best, it was included in our price of the room. In the states, it easily would have cost $25 or more. There is security. It's needed because the beach vendors come up to the lower grassy beachy area. The security guard was always present when we were out. He truly manned the gate. Know that if you have guests visiting who are not staying at the hotel, you may need to be present in the lobby to escort them elsewhere. I gathered from a document in the lobby that this is a law.

Over Priced

Room assigned the A/C did not work. Was told they could fix it but after one hour still not working, and then they gave us another room after I asked. Rooms are ok, lacking minor maintenance like faucets and shower door handles loose. Cartegena has very humid climate and because hallways are carpet the smell of mold is prevelant. The community areas like pool and lounge area are not what one would expect for price. The best feature is the restaurant and good breakfast buffet. Overpriced hotel.

A different scenery from Cartagena

It is a good destination out of the busy city. Out of your hotel room you can witness part of the Cartagena swamp and the hotel is connected to a kind of private beach. Breakfast has a wide variety of food. There is a rice called "vegetable rice" which has a delicate and delicious Colombian touch". You can try different local food at breakfast.

I recently stayed at this hotel for a couple of days over a weekend. I would encourage non-colombian (particularly American and Canadian) travelers to read this review in its entirety prior to making a reservation. Context: I am a very experienced traveler and have visited Colombia more than 20 times over the past 20 years. My wife is Colombian and we have 3 children. I speak excellent Spanish. Point being, I love Colombia and generally don't have any issues in the country. And, none of what I am about to share has anything to do with a communication issue. I know the language. I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Cartagena Morros. The hotel itself is located close to the airport (about 10 minutes away), the facility is overall quite nice. The room was clean, plenty of hot water, view of the ocean, the restaurant was nice, etc. The pool is a little small and the spa is a bit average, but overall the facility is nice. Service in the restaurant was also pretty good. Here's the part where I recommend foreign travelers to be aware of: First, there is water with lime and lemon in the lobby. The manager assured me that it was exceptionally purified. Well I drank that water and within 12 hours had some pretty major stomach issues. Shame on me for doing that I guess, but I'm trying to let others avoid the same problem. Second, and this was the much BIGGER issue. My children arrived to Cartagena later that day. I had brought them a couple of things from the US that they had forgotten. We headed up the elevator to my room to get their items. At this point we were removed by security (almost forcibly) from the elevator and not allowed to proceed up to my room. I was required to go to another building to find their passports and go through a 20 minute process to get them upstairs with me. I told the front desk guy that were only going up for a few minutes to get a couple of things but he responded in a very condescending tone and basically we were held hostage at the front desk until they went through their process. My issue with this was the following: 1) how/why would the security guard single us out? This is not a property where people where wrist bands (similar to what you see in Cancun, etc). I did not see anything like this happening to colombian families with Children. 2) The manner in which is was done was rude, condescending, and ultimately left my children asking "dad, why are they treating us like this". I came away with the perception that there is a double standard of treatment at this hotel toward foreign guests. I suppose we stand out and make it easier to be hassled by security guards. I have been travelling to Colombia since 1996. I have never before felt some type of bias like I did at the Holiday Inn Morros with my children. I recommend that the hotel manager consider some type of bias training for the security and front desk. I will not stay at this hotel again. Good luck!!

This Hotel is quiet and away from the Attractions. Please take someone that speaks Spanish with you when you visit. We had a lot of issues communicating and do your currency exchange in the Airport because the Hotel can’t give you any change for US currency.
