The staff, drinks and food make this hotel one of the best all-inclusives we have stayed at. And we have stayed at a lot of hotels. From the shuttle drivers to the front desk staff, everyone was EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming. Staff were always smiling saying hello and always available to help.
-The drinks and food were AMAZING for an all-inclusive. We have stayed at many all inclusives and this was by far the best food and drinks. All the drinks are hand made by bartenders that seem to genuinely want to be there. They muddled mint for mojitos, cut fresh fruit for garnishes, and just overall were excellent. Food was also good too. Yes the portions are small, but once you get the hang of it, you just order a BUNCH of things. We enjoyed all the different restaurants and booking a reservation was much easy than any other all inclusive we have been to.
OTHER BEST PARTS
-The VIEW from our Room - We stayed in the 400's. Unbelievable view of the bay.
-The spa was great. We had a couples massage. Very Good
-Day Time activities were good. Pool Volleyball, Free Learn to Scuba, Snorkeling, etc.
-We rented at Car from the ALAMO at the Hotel in the lobby. It was excellent and VERY convenient. We picked up the car the night before, woke up in the morning and hit the road. We drove down the coast to Tamarido (about 1 hour door to door) it was such a great way to see other parts of the country. HIGHLY recommend renting a car for the day from Alamo
-We did a few excursions from a guy Brian on the beach. He was not affiliated with the hotel, but he was cheaper, and the excursions (jet skiing and ziplining) were very good and high quality. I would recommend shopping around.
-The room and grounds were well kept
-Taxis are a good option to get off the resort for a day or night of fun. You can go to Coco Beach for around $25 each way. Not too bad
"Opportunities for improvement"
-The nightlife was lacking a bit, but they did try. They had live music, karaoke, etc. The bar is open late so you can make your own nightlife fun. OR as we did on a few nights, get to bed a little earlier and wake up to enjoy the full day in the sun.
-Some nights the bartenders were overloaded. It was kind of hit or miss depending on the crowd. They worked EXTREMELY hard to make sure everyone had a drink, but some nights it did get a bit hectic.
-Walking - Yes it is hilly but that just meant we could have 1 more drink on the ride in the shuttle
(None of these "opportunities" would deter me from booking again)
If you want fun, relaxation and a little adventure I highly recommend this hotel.
Excellent place, keep things in perspective

Remember, you are in Costa Rica. This is a 3rd world country living up to first world expectations. Overall it does it extremely well!. yes the rooms are a little dated but everything was clean and in working order. we know a guest that had a back up on the shower. maintenance was there that day to address it.
Food was excellent. I have no complaints. I think I have figured out the food complaints. A lot of people in the U.S. equate quantity with quality.I also found if I had the appetizer , main entrée and dessert I was full. Think about it, it is all inclusive. giving you over sized portions so they end up throwing it away doesn't make sense. I saw many larger couples just order a 3rd entrée and split it. It was served to them happily and without question.
The toughest thing you have to do is book your reservation 24 hours in advance (dinner only) This is hard? really? I like to eat at a regular time so what is the problem in trying to do a reservation when you are usually hungry? I got into every restaurant i wanted to be at and when by booking the next day. I actually walked into 2 restaurants 15 minutes early. they had room and let us come in early.
You can actually book your meals the morning of but you get limited on where you want to be.
due to these reviews, I actually timed every dinner. every dinner took about an hour for the 3 courses from the time I sat down until I left. this seems normal for me when I go out to eat locally. it is usually worse in the northeast because I have to wait for a table. the one 630 dinner I had got me in and out in 40 minutes.
Do's and Don'ts
Do bring one dollar bills with you. I brought 50 of them and tipped and did not run out. some guests didn't tip. i don't know if it improved my service but I left happy.
Do take a taxi IT is $55 from the airport if you don't want to do the shuttle. The driver offered to bring me back for $45 if I called him a day in advance. I did it and he was there at 530 am ready to take me to the airport.- the official government approved taxi is red with a yellow triangle on the door. Plenty are available when you get off the plane.
Do try all restaurants. They were all great.
Don't need to rent a car, the resort has them available for daily rentals if you want.
Don't change money, US dollars were taken on the resort any where the tours took us. I lost more on the exchange of money to colones in the U.S. than I ever did just paying with dollars.in Costa Rica
Overall a great experience, I would gladly do it again. I know the Hilton no longer owns it. I will keep an eye on the reviews but plan to go back!
yes there are some bad reviews but look at the numbers.. 10% are bad, 90% are good! we were in the 90%
Not worth the money AT ALL

My mom and I stayed here for one week in mid April 2014. We lost our luggage on the way, but from desk staff were extremely helpful with helping us with recovery of our bags and bridging the language barrier. The rooms were decent, clean and well air conditioned. We had some trouble with our air conditioner leaking but maintenance was quick to come and do repairs. The pool was nice and clean, but this is where the good in our trip ended. If you are going expecting to lay on the beach this probably isn't the place for you. Black sand with some rocks and tons of hermit crabs and mediocre water. Also, the property is embedded on a hill so you have a fair climb to get back to your room if you do not want to wait for a ride, which takes forever. Now for the thing that makes me rate this as poor: THEY DO NOT WASH ANY DISHES AT THE BAR! you heard that right!! They take the dishes, run them quickly under the water and fill them back up! no soap, no hot water, nothing. Forget about asking them to properly wash the dishes if you ever want to get served again. No wonder why it seemed like everywhere you turned people were sick. Absolutely disgusting.

We stayed here for four nights in early February. This resort is simply not worth it and most certainly not good if you are expecting any kind of Hilton perks. I would recommend staying in one of the nearby towns on the beach, such as Tamarindo.
The rooms were very old and were almost rustic. The housekeeping left out bags of towels and cleaning supplies behind the rooms. One day we came back to our room to find the bathroom floor completely soaked.
The breakfast here was more than fine, plenty of options to keep you happy. If you are vegetarian: note that the hotel has only one vegetarian menu to serve at all the restaurants, which you have to pre-order earlier in the day. Overall the food and drinks were below average.
Finally, while most of the staff was polite, we had some issues. It was hard to get anyone on the phone to get a ride around the grounds. After doing one of the hotel hikes (be advised, the hotel does not maintain its trails well), we arrived at the bar at the adult pool to ask for water as people were being served only to have the bartender tell us that the bar was CLOSED. Really?! We did find the ladies at the concierge hut to be very friendly and helpful.
Great for the price

I had a great week at the Hilton Papagaya. How unfortunate that it has changed ownership or management this week. I hope it stays great. The view from Rm 447 was amazing. The bed and linens fabulous. Internet at $70 US for 5 days a bit expensive but it worked fine and you can use it on up to 3 or 4 devices. One can always find shade or sun at the pool. Really enjoyed the daily aquarobics. Food was OK, there was always something you could find on the menu - you have to make reservations at the restaurants early. I was there for a wedding - everything went well, although I heard from the bride that the hotel could have been more helpful. The room and some of the furnishing were a bit tired but everything was extremely comfortable and clean.
