Best option for urban travelers

We spent the New Year vacation there in a family mini-reunion setting, and I don't think I could have picked a better hotel. Who we are: Travelers from NYC that have been to Hawaii several times--and love the weather, the people, the food, etc. etc. there--but we don't really LOVE spending too much time on the beach or by the pool all that much. LOCATION: *The beach was 5 minutes walk away for us and maybe 8 minutes with my 80-year-old mother (and the pool was also spacious enough with the bar, etc.). * In front of the International Marketplace (w/ boutiques, restaurants in all price ranges, Saks and a Japanese supermarket) and next to a big supermarket w/ various takeout options. * Centrally located, so it is within walking distance of most destinations within Waikiki, including the Zoo, etc. * The trolley stop is on the next block--which gives easy access to the Ala Moana Mher destinations. * Even w/ Uber, a ride to Ala Moana was less than $10, the Museum of Art, $14, etc. THE PROPERTY: * Unlike other area hotels, it is not chaotic. We've stayed at "better" hotels such as Hilton Hawaiian Village, The Royal Hawaiian, Outrigger, the Marriott, etc., but we didn't enjoy the chaos everywhere--from the entrance, lobby, the restaurants to the elevators. Hilton Garden Inn, by contrast, felt peaceful in the lobby, the restaurant, the shop, etc. * The gym and the pool were never crowded, even during the New Year period when the hotel was presumably full. * The room was nicely renovated, and it all felt fresh. * Still, there were two resort desks/concierge that took care of our requests/questions. CONS: * I'm an Honors Diamond, but there was no noticeable benefit beyond free breakfast (which Gold would get anyhow) at all. There was no lounge, and there was no room upgrade at all. The premium WiFi was not noticeably faster than the regular free WiFi, and it didn't seem very stable (and it kept on asking for my login info several times daily). * There were only 4 elevators, and there was a long wait several times daily (in the morning and around the check-in time). * The floor plan provided during the digital check-in was grossly inaccurate, so we ended up having to switch rooms. * The breakfast items were identical throughout my 7-day stay, and the selection was quite small (very few hot items, two proteins--bacon and sliced sausages, and limited bread selections, etc.) in comparison to any of the hotels I've stayed in Hawaii--or other Hilton-affiliated hotels. More importantly, the food quality was...memorable but not in a good way. [If you don't get free breakfast, I'd definitely recommend that you NOT pay to get their breakfast.] * The cleaning crew's performance was inconsistent. Our suite would be spotless with all of the supplies replenished one day, then it is barely cleaned the next day...with one of the trash can not even emptied. OVERALL VERDICT: This hotel is perhaps not for everyone. If you are looking for a beach resort--or you would like to be in a resort environment w/ Pina Coladas with umprellas, you may be disappointed. This is a "city" hotel w/ little resort feel. But, if you are like us and enjoy the urban environment without spending too much time on the beach, you'd probably be happy. I will definitely stay again.

Want to go down to Waikiki beach for a swim, just walk across Kuhio, walk through the International Market place and down an alleyway full of surf boards and you are ready for the warm water. Just a 5-7 min walk from your hotel and you are on a part of Waikiki beach facing the famous Royal Hawaiian hotel. Your hotel is on Kuhio and not on the very busy Kalakaua which is good and Kuhio is the street where you pick up the local "The bus". On the bus they stopped giving out transfers and you have to buy a 5 dollar day ticket to return to your hotel. A short trip is expensive but on the other hand you can travel all around Oahu on the same ticket. It would take you 5-7 hours ! Bring a pillow, bus seats are hard and not comfortable. Your hotel room is excellent, well appointed and with comfortable beds. If your room is facing east you can have your morning coffee on the lanai. The coffee machines are fine, producing good coffee and new capsules are added each day. Room service should be agreed upon with the service dept. Book a time which is convenient for you. A local paper is available for free in the lobby and most of the days they don't run out. I guess many of the japanees guest rely on the japanees TV channels for news. There are 4 computers in the lobby if you want to surf or print your check-in papers for your return flight. Just across the street there is a large grocery store. Buy some fresh papayas and some lime. What a great breakfast fruit ! Location, quality rooms and acceptable rates want you to come back to this Garden Inn.

Great Locaton, Quiet and Friendly

I did a last minute booking for this hotel for 12/25- 12/28. The room was clean and very quiet. We did not hear any outside noise even though we had a room on the street side of the hotel. I have previously stayed at this location under another name and the changes are a great improvement. There is a convenience store right in the lobby, the coffee shop's cappuccino machine was out of order, but otherwise everything was perfect for our short visit to Waikiki. 2 blocks off the beach. Would recommend this to anyone.

Xmas holiday at the Hilton Garden Inn

We stayed at this Hotel leading up to and over Christmas 2017. What frustrated me with this hotel was the booking was made some 8 months in advance and on booking I requested a high floor, city view per my booking. On arrival, I was greeted by a male concierge and immediately he confirmed my booking being the two rooms. He then threw in, "oh we give you an upgrade to high floor and city view for an extra $20 per room per night". Sorry, but I found this like some kind of pre ambush, as the hotel knowingly knew what my requests were and this was obvious just a ploy and attempt to gain more money from the customer. Not impressed, and I did not argue considering it was a family holiday and it was Xmas. It turned out I was given two rooms on the 8th floor down the far end of the building which overlooked a carpark and was very close to another undesirable and rough looking residential building. No views whatsoever, not even sun. The 9 nights, that we experienced was noisy from this building, their occupants, every night someone was dumping bottles in a dumpster in the middle of the night and people screaming throughout the night could be heard. Very disappointing and not what you want on an overseas holiday at Xmas. I found the staff operating at the Garden Inn somewhat distant with no soul and never a greet, most of the time they were just standing behind the desk and looked like they were someplace else. Not a personality amongst them. Rooms were accommodating and newly renovated, cleaning of the rooms we found average. The pool area was nice as was the bar but nothing to write home about. The location of the hotel itself is well situated and close to everything, definitely this what it does have in its favour. Would I stay at this hotel again? As a return visitor to Hawaii, 3 times, I would not stay here again for the issues mentioned. There are a lot things management at this hotel need to get right before this would return stay hotel.

Great location opposite international market place.I was pleasantly surprised with how spacious our room was.Had a room with a king bed and then a sofa bed in the living area. Bathroom was a little small but was not a major. The fridge and microwave came in handy. House keeping were great and the place was always restocked. I was happy there was no resort fees like many other hotels charge. If you are on a higher floor like we were lifts can take a while. Overall though very happy with our stay.
