Quick Trip for Thanksgiving
crallred, Charlotte, North Carolina
Tue Jan 09 04:25:05 EST 2018
After learning our family was going to be out of town for Thanksgiving, my wife and I decided to find a quick trip destination to spend our holiday. By chance we ran across the Royalton Negril resort. The price was right and we booked for long Thanksgiving weekend. Our original reservation was for the Diamond Club and not the Hideaway. Due to a fire on our very first night, we were upgraded to the Hideaway after a bit of heated discussion with the staff. Both were to receive complete butler service, however, outside of our initial check-in and move to the second room, we saw him once. Diamond club discloses in-room liquor for these upgraded guests, but in our 5 day stay, we had our mini fridge filled once and there was never any liquor in the room. Diamond club also advertises that upgraded liquor is available in the "Diamond Club Lounge". While there is poor yourself liquor in the lounge, it often ran out and was not replaced. Also, this is really just a private check-in area and not what I would call a lounge at all. Service on the beach was spotty at best, as we went one whole day without being offered a beverage on the beach. The resort itself was terrific. We booked this as it was listed as a "Brand New" property so our expectations were high and the resort didn't let us down. The beaches are small and can get crowded so make sure you get out early and grab a chair but they are cleaned daily. The food was the definite highlight of this resort. Each meal was as good or better than the last. All meals seemed made to order instead of the more typical feeling of being mass prepared and waiting. We plan to try a second Royalton resort, and have already booked our next trip. Hopefully the resort holds up to this one and the service strives to match the wonderful food and grounds.

The rating is 2.2 / 5.0 and that's being generous. Here are samples my daily encounters and observations. With over 40 negative experiences over 8 days sprinkled with a very few good ones, this is the LAST PLACE we'd return. Worst trip in a very very long time. And $10k+ for 3. There was ONE person at check-in when we arrived. 3-4 hours to check-in to rooms We had 4 rooms ordered and they couldn't get one ready at 1:30pm despite check out at 12noon?  We were refused WiFi connections by Hideaway Diamond Club reception at check-in until we were fully checked into our rooms despite explaining business needs. Front desk arranged for me to meet Jodi Ann Woolrey Diamond Club Manager. She never showed. We walked 200+ yards at 2:30 to check-in room and still not ready.  As a side note - We walked over 25 miles in one week at this resort. Ordered 3 double rooms and we got 3 kings and a double room. After 4 hours of mass confusion and misinformation from our check in team, we gave up  Room 9301 ( the Presidential Suite) not ready. Another Room, 9204, was so coated in smoke smell, another delay and change. Our rooms were supposed to be together but now were in separate buildings.  Doors stuck in my room so only partially open. Bathtub was not anchored to floor so moved when I tried to use it (in Presidential Suite??).  Food is at very best, average quality for hotel of this nature in every Restaurant. Lots of frozen foods used. 3 members of our party became violently sick caused by food. Mohan the Butler talked a great game but didn't deliver on most promises. Seldom available or seen. Kadeam got us our restaurant reservations and did beach chairs for a few days but then got those wrong. The Butlers were "hunting for tips". Despite $40+ tip one day it still didn't wake then up. Told lunch buffet opens at 12 noon by front lobby workers, so walked over. It actually opens at 12:30! Why staff doesn't know simple basic and important answers and details is annoying. Buffet workers (8) standing around doing nothing? Wondering why lunch is at 12:30? The rest of the world is 12:00 noon Buffet didn't open at 12:30. Buffet opened at 12:45pm . No decaf coffee at lunch buffet for 5 days Both my daughter and I were physically ill on New Years day after bad food reactions. A meeting with Maxine Williams Guest Services Manager 1:50-2:20 didn't go well. Got her attitude and she was not really shocked about substandard service. Reviews on Trip Advisor confirm why. No beach drink service at Hideaway side. Sporadic services at Royalton beach. No bottled water at bars any bars that we went to. Tiffany our waitress for a meal at Armadillo was superb.  Butlers are supposed to arrange reservations at Restaurants but ours didn't tell us.  We found out from friends here that had their Butler book 12 people for a week.  It appears that many workers here enjoy rejecting requests. Meeting with Maxine Williams was delayed and she very indignantly stated "I was with a guest". I asked if she had checked with her front desk workers to see if I was waiting.  Nope. It's a negative feel here.  3/4 mile walk to get good beach and it is overcrowded.  Grazie. Had a lunch of Spaghetti and it was cold and no napkins at table for salad and soup. 2 requests for a napkin fell to no response. Reservation at Tappanakki at 8pm and we were seated at 8:51 - 9:30pm sitting at table and no food yet provided yet. Reservations were for 8pm.  Tanisha said to get a massage we had to "establish a pre-authorized credit card at front desk". Lady at beach said it would be charged to room and never mentioned anything about credit cards or front desk. Just said it we be charged to our room which made total sense. Arlene took booking. Tanisha said she can't do it. Complete chaos. Facilities out at least $1000 US for cancelled massages. Used spa but no keys to lockup valuables. (Pictures). Kadeam confirmed we can keep our room 9301 until 6pm on Sunday Dec 7th. That actually worked but I had to confirm by email as nobody's word at this resort can be trusted No bath robes in presidential suite but my wife's room 9101 has 2 robes? Diamond Club lounge is a room used to check people in. No lounge seating inside so how is this a " lounge"?  Power out in 9101; 9104 every day around 5pm.  Power out in whole building today January 5th at 4:30pm. Water also off meaning it must be on electricity grid. Still waiting 5:04pm. Called downstairs and she sounded surprised my power was out and then in the next breath said the maintenance team was on it. If she didn't know power was out how could she know maintenance was fixing it?  Power back on at 5:20pm suggesting there is no backup generator system. Water still off. Water back on at 5:45pm on Friday January 5th I went to get change at the front desk for $100 US. 3 facilities did not have change for $100 on hand.  Refused bottle water on Hideaway Beach by waitress. Said we could have anything else but not water. January 6.  Restaurant staff don't know where different foods are located. Why? Makes for a long walk to find foods. No spoons or napkins set. Hideaway Beach January 6 ordered Ziggy Marley no alcohol and waitress brought Bob Marley with alcohol. I said we ordered a Ziggy Marley and she said "what's that" ? Seriously? All in all, a very frustrating time and total waste of money. Will never return and likely never go back to Negril. My hesitation about all things Sunwing proved valid. If you want more details on everything ask your questions. I kept detailed notes. And yes- it was that bad!

Gorgeous place, just ok on service

We stayed at this resort from Dec. 30th - Jan. 4th. I will mention that I emailed the resort prior to our stay to inquire about anything they do special for wedding anniversaries, but have received no reply to date. Upon arrival on the Hideaway side of the resort, our luggage was taken and we were given warm, wet rags for our hands (no drinks). We left our luggage there at the entrance and were taken by a butler to the Diamond Club to check-in. At check-in, we had a semi-friendly female help us fill out any required forms. I made mention on the forms (where it asked) that my husband and I were there to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. We noticed in the diamond club office that there were deserts and drinks laid out. All of the alcohol was hot, with the exception of some bottles of champagne. Therefore, the first thing I drank was a cold Red Stripe beer I found in our room once we were finished checking in. We waited 45 minutes for our luggage, as it never arrived, before going back to the diamond club to ask about it. Now mind you, at check-in, we were told that we would have only one, but two butlers assigned to us and they would come around to meet us and get our luggage to us ASAP. I will note here that we never met one of the butlers for our ENTIRE stay. I’m not even sure if he’s a real person. We finally got our luggage from the butler that walked us over to check-in about an hour and 15 minutes later after arrival. If you’re like me, you would’ve preferred to just carry your own crap to the room so you could start unpacking and get settled in. We arrived later in the day 4pm-ish, so I would’ve preferred not to have to have waited so long to get changed and clean up for dinner. The first day there, we did not meet our assigned butlers. Ahhhh...dinner. Let’s talk about food at this place. There is a lovely resort restaurant listing provided on your tv in each room. There are opening times listed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’m not sure why they list times, because they don’t abide by these. Lunch and dinner was ALWAYS late, for EVERY restaurant. As a result, you see guests starving and piling up waiting to go inside each of these places at noon and 5:30-6:00pm. This is not something I’m accustomed to staying at all-inclusives, so it was very weird to me. I’ve heard of island time, but it was very annoying. Service was slowwwwww and food was usually just warm (not hot). I will say that breakfast at El Dorado (exclusive restaurant for Hideaway guests only)was WONDERFUL and usually didn’t take too long. There is an international buffet spot where you can serve yourself three meals a day, so service is faster there bc you do it yourself. The food is just ok at that spot, with the exception of the pasta and stir fry stations. Your food is much more hot and fresh when you wait in the station lines for “chefs” to prepare right there on the spot. Activities: There wasn’t a lot to do at the resort. We found ourselves extremely bored waiting on shows and music to start at night. Once they got going, they were ok though. Because of the sad food situation and being hungry and wanting to eat dinner at 5:30 (to catch sunsets over dinner) and not wait until 7 for a semi-warm meal, my husband and I left the resort on two different nights to visit restaurants off-site (Rockhouse Restaurant and Ivan’s Bar and Grill). These restaurants were exceptional, however we had to book cab service to them through the resort ($50 round trip to Rockhouse and $80 round trip to Ivan’s). This was a huge ripoff and a big logistical problem we found in Jamaica. Cab service in Punta Cana was much cheaper, and in both Mexico and the Bahamas, there are extremely cheap public bus systems you can take. We felt pretty trapped at this resort just bc of how expensive it was. We did do an excursion for $59 a piece to visit Rick’s Café via catamaran. You could walk to Ivan’s from Rick’s. Therefore, it was literally cheaper to take the catamaran than the cab. Butler service: the major shining light of hope for this trip for me, that made it all worth it, was our butler, Eugene. Now, we were supposed to have another butler, Damien, but we never met him the entire time (even on days when Eugene was off work). We met Eugene the next day after check-in, and I asked him if he saw from our check-in that it was our anniversary that same day. He said they did not inform him from the diamond club office, but that he would take care of it. And, boy did he! Eugene put a banner on our door and decorated our room with flower petals, balloons, and swan towels. He even filled up the bathtub with bubbles. Eugene brought us a complimentary bottle of wine and rum during our stay. My husband enjoyed the canned fruit drinks in the fridge, so Eugene made sure we were stocked up each day with multiple non-alcoholic cold drink selections for my husband and beer for me :) Because Eugene was not coming in until later in the day on our last day there, we left a tip exclusively for him in an envelope and took it to the diamond club to leave it there for him. I sincerely hope he actually received it. He did all the work...I mean all of it (with the exception of maid service...we left a separate tip for them in the room when we left). I think diamond club is worth it if you get a good butler like we did. It helps to keep your fridge stocked and Eugene brought us pool towels everyday. He even Brel ugh time is extra towels for our Rick’s Café excursion the day we went. Eugene was awesome!!! Swim-out pools: meh. These pools at this resort are NOT worth it. They are freezing and all had shade cover on them by 1pm in the afternoon. The shallow part of the pool was useless, as we had no lounge chairs to actually tan in (only standard, wicker sit-down chairs). We’ve stayed at a sister resort in Punta Cana (Chic Royalton), and our swim-out pool had sun ALL day and we had lounge chairs to lay in. Well worth it, since it was hard at both resorts to get chairs around the main pool...VERY HARD. They literally built the Hideaway resort wrong in Negril. The way it’s situated, their swim out pools are useless with all the shade. Some may say it’s the time of year, but we did not have this issue at the sister resort in Punta Cana (sun covered our swim out all day into early evening). In summary: this place is beautiful, but still needs to work on service (with the exception of Eugene). I’m not a fan of the logistics of getting around in Jamaica in general, so I most likely won’t be back. I prefer Nassau, Bahamas for beaches, ease of traveling around, and service myself.

I write this review from my beautiful ocean view room that I left today for the first time in 3 days. The night we arrived, we dined at the Calyso (West indies) where I had the crab cakes and the chicken roti. I woke up in the middle of the night vomiting so much that I filled both garbage cans in the room and could not be away from the washroom for more than 5 minutes for the next 3 days. I will say the maid service was great. She really had to disinfect our room two days in a row! The resort is beautiful. I would advise on a second or third floor room. The swim out rooms seem pointless to me. All rooms are rather noisy though. In the Hideaway there is loud pool music all day long and you can hear the entertainment from the middle of the resort until late at night. We had a closet light that constantly turned on and off our entire stay as long as our lights were on which they were because of having to be up so frequently. I would advise you to bring antibiotics from home because if you get travellers illness, the nurse on site can not help you, immoduim does not work, there are few doctors on Negril.
