If you want to be treated like 2nd class citizen stay here

If you want to be treated like 2nd class citizen stay here. You know that feeling when you are sitting in coach and you need to use the restroom and the only one available is in first class BUT the attendant tells you No. Yeah. That's this resort. Stay clear if you do not speak Spanish. Staff will play dumb and tell you no until you find a staff that will actually accommodate.

Great time at the Hard Rock

I stayed at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya in February for 7 days. I really had a lot of fun and enjoyed the restaurants and entertainment. My favorite was the Brazilian restaurant overlooking the ocean. The property is large and well kept. The room was great we had a room with a rooftop deck.  I used many of my credits (4 rounds) for the golf course which is about a 15 minute  shuttle. The golf course was in great shape and the staff was really friendly and made sure I was paired up with other fun golfers.  Augustin Diaz , Oscar Rosado and Augustin Garcia made the experience fun and entertaining.  My wife played once with me and was really happy when they  allowed us to play alone.  Its all inclusive the beer was cold and there was food available. The course is beautiful and challenging so hit them straight.

Great place but you can't sleep with cheap, thin doors that SLAM all night.

I read hundreds of reviews on the Hard Rock Rivieria and was expecting the best vacation ever. There were many, many good things and two very bad things. We stayed in Hacienda (family) section. Here’s my candid review of everything: ROOM: Very clean, comfortable beds, stocked mini-bar, A/C worked well. Tip: don’t leave ANY food or you will get ants. Loved the use of wristbands that double as room keys. FOOD: Restaurant food is really good. Especially liked Toro, French restaurant was great (only went once as kids can’t go). Had most lunches at restaurant by pool. The grilled chicken there is really good. Room service is nice and included. Did not need to get dressed up for restaurants – just not pool attire. POOLS: Nice, big, not deep though, only 4 ft or so, had fun parties at pool. Foam party was a real blast. I played in water polo against employees – fun time. MUSIC: I read many reviews complaining about the loud music played outside and was concerned about this. Honestly it isn’t a big deal. Unless you are right by the big speakers in one section of the pool, the music was really not a problem at all. BEACH: It is scenic but not that useable. The concept of the lagoon sounds good but not really that great. It’s nice if you have small kids as they can’t get swept out in the ocean and no waves. But the snorkeling isn’t usually that great. Kind of cloudy and not really much to see. Wife & I only snorkeled once for about 2 hours in the week we were there. My teenage kids never snorkeled and hardly went in the lagoon except to use the rope line which they seemed to really like. By contrast, at another resort in Cozumel they snorkeled every day. In the future, I think I would rather go to a resort with a nice beach with waves that my kids enjoy and go on separate, really good snorkeling excursions as it is really hard to find good snorkeling right off any resort. SHOWS: Michael Jackson show was good as was the magic show. My kids were not interested in seeing all the shows but the ones we saw were good. STAFF: The people at HR were all very nice and helpful. Very good service. Although sometimes they gave me wrong information on times and events. For example a person at the front desk told me my kids couldn’t go to Toro to eat. Had I listened to her, we would have really missed out on our favorite restaurant there as kids can go there. TEENAGER OPINION: Maybe it was the time of year we went but my kids (13 & 15) were expecting a lot more kids their age and there wasn’t so they just hung out together. We went to the teenage club and no one was there. Seemed lame. RESORT CREDITS: You still have to pay 20% which makes them not that appealing except for some excursions. Put it this way, I left $6,500 in unused resort credits. EXCURSIONS: Did 2 that we booked on site at HR. There was an adventure one that we could use resort credits so it was only $29 per person which included transportation and lunch. Snorkeling was very good. Cenote was lame as there wasn’t much to do at this one. Ziplining was fun. Rappelling was good. A fairly cheap day that took ½ day so I recommend. Lockers were included. The other was a trip to climb tallest pyramid in the area (was told this was last year they let people climb it but later guide told us they say that every year). Took bicycles to see ruins with tour guide. Went to a Cenote that was my son’s favorite part as this Cenote was very big and had very high platforms to jump from. It was very cool and way better than the Cenote from the adventure tour. Also did a zipline and watched a Mayan basketball-type game with lunch. It wasn’t cheap ($500+ for 4) but I highly recommend. However there were no lockers as the HR agent said but the guide watched our stuff as we went in Cenote – still made me nervous though. TIP: Don’t bother bringing sunscreen or bug spray at either excursion – not needed. THE BAD: Up to this point, I would give this resort a 5 star but it has one serious flaw that many reviews have mentioned. The doors in the rooms going to the hallway let you hear everything. The doors are thin, do not seal at the bottom or edges and slam easily. When they slam it really sounds like a gun shot. It is super loud and very annoying. The first 5 days we were there the resort was not crowded at all and very few people were in our hall so it wasn’t bad but once Friday hit, it was a nightmare. Every few minutes at night, you would here this loud BAM which was someone in the hall closing their door. The doors are very easy to slam and not done intentionally by people. You could also hear anyone talking in the hall. It got so bad trying to sleep that I had to stay up till 2:00 AM for the remainder of my stay until everyone else on the floor went in for the night. And of course it all starts again at 7:00 AM. So if you don’t mind getting woken up all through the night and getting just a few hours of sleep each night, then this resort is great. If Hard Rock would just replace the room doors with good, quality doors like at most American hotels then this would be a 5 star resort. Until that happens, I won’t vacation somewhere where I can’t get a good night’s sleep. This is the reason for the low review. HOSPITAL CARE: I am not lowering my review because of this next issue but I will mention it as a warning to others. I slipped coming out of the hot tub on the terrace and cut my head. The terraces are very slippery when wet. The HR on-site doctor was very nice, bandaged my head and didn’t charge me but said she couldn’t do stitches and called me a cab to have a DR do the stitches at the hospital. I went to the place as directed, the hospiten Riviera Maya. They were clean, professional and gave me 4 stitches and I was out of there in 90 minutes. But they charged me $1,668!!!!!!! That was outrageous but what choice did I have? When I had the 4 stitches removed in the USA, they said it would have been about $500 in the USA. I got the strong impression that there is a separate billing for tourists and one for locals. I could not imagine locals paying anywhere near this much. Since my out-of-network deductible is still more than this, the entire amount was out-of-pocket for me. What a rip-off. It ruined my vacation and prevented me from spending more $ on fun things. Pharmacy: The cab driver basically asked us if we wanted to go to the cheap, local pharmacy or the ‘tourist’ pharmacy. We of course went to the cheap, local one and paid a low price for the anti-biotics. I wish the first cab driver had asked us which hospital we wanted to go to. Instead he went where the resort told him to go. I do not blame Hard Rock for my accident, although it is very slippery on the terrace and they should have mats or some rougher floors that are not so slippery when wet. However, I did ask HR to pay for ½ of the hospital bill as the accident did happen on their property. In the USA, most places would be happy to pay to avoid a lawsuit, especially for a head injury. But HR would not pay anything. I kept going up the chain to higher-level managers but they simply wouldn’t pay, even though they have insurance. I settled for massages for my family, which we liked. The HR people were very nice about it, they sent champagne and desserts to the room. I googled the hospiten Riviera Maya when I got home. Many reviews said they rip-off tourists and charge them way, way more. I guess they think all the “rich Americans” can be charged 5 times what the locals pay. I do think the HR must have known this (certainly the DR) and could have recommended another medical facility or at least forewarned me or maybe provided some options so I could decide. I googled this and found out that not all of these medical facilities rip-off tourists such as COSTAMED. My advice: If you are a tourist, do NOT go to a hospiten in Mexico unless it is truly life threatening. I have spent about $30,000 over the last 4 years vacationing in Mexico but after being rip-offed so much simply because I’m a tourist has made me want to spend my $ somewhere else where they appreciate the value tourists bring to the country. I am very disappointed that the staff at HR did not direct me to a much cheaper location that the locals use to get 4 simple stitches instead of the rip-off tourist hospiten.

Resort was spotless! Staff was friendly and attentive. Food was excellent and a great variety. Bartenders Chicken and Fish were great. Mi Chavo the waiter at the pool was excellent. We used resort credit for the Rock Spa, definitely recommend it. We stayed on the family side, it was quiet.

Wonderful Week at the Hard Rock

This was our first trip back to this resort since it changed to a Hard Rock. We were here when it was Adventura Spa Palace and loved it. We are Palace Premiere members, which gives us access to the Palace resorts, as well as the Hard Rock. We were interested in finding out if the Hard Rock had kept up the high expectations that the Palace has for their resorts. We chose to stay on the Heaven side in a presidential suite because my husband and I were traveling with another couple. We liked that this resort offers the option of either adults only (Heaven), or the family side (Hacienda). Although everything about the Hard Rock was wonderful, it was the staff that made the difference. Everyone that works at this resort was amazing. When we checked in, at the members check in--Mario was so kind and helpful. Everyone from the bellboys to the cleaning staff, bartenders to waiters were smiling, happy and ready to make your trip better! After sitting in the same area by the pool, we got to know Iris and Ophelia our wonderful waitresses. They were continuously checking to see if we needed anything, and were always cheerful. They made our days better, just by being there. I went to the spa 4 times during our stay. The spa was nice. I had the most amazing massage from Felipe Velazquez. He was so one of the best masseuse therapists I have ever had. I will request him next time I visit. The food at the Italian and French (on Heaven side) restaurant was excellent. The food at the other restraunts was good, but we enjoyed the atmosphere and service at these two places the best. If you are a wine drinker, use your resort credits to upgrade your wine. The wine sommelier was knowledgable and helped us find wines that we loved. Thank you for a wonderful week. We will return. We enjoyed everything about our stay!
