The hotel facilities are well maintained, the rooms are nice and comfortable. However, it is a large hotel so there is an internal transport which is deficient and insufficient for the number of people, the waiting time can be up to 30min. The variety of buffets is very short and if you want to book in the restaurants for dinner they have time restrictions if you take children. There are also restaurants and pool areas restricted to adults only. The kids club that they advertise and describe on their website is nothing more than a small room with some games without anyone to attend it, in reality they do not have scheduled activities for the children. The food of the bufetts is bad and the variety is very short, the crockery is insufficient, the plates, glasses and cutlery are finished all the time. The beach club is quite far away, there is a transport that leaves every 30min but it is uncomfortable and insecure, it is a redilla truck with seats to carry people. The beach club also is not as the website shows, it's not bad but the beach is very rocky, the sand is coarse, the water is full of seaweed, I do not recommend swim on it, my nephew got in and hit his knee with a stone, he got a considerable wound and they did not have a first aid kit in the place or in the hotel! Totally irresponsible. It is a pity the lack of personnel and service, because the price you pay is high. The service leaves a lot to be desired. And they definitely should not advertise it as a family resort, it's practically a hotel for adults. Too many restricted areas for people who go with children.

First and foremost, we booked Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills Resort & Spa to celebrate my husband's 35th birthday. (July 28-Aug 4) We were very pleased with the picturesque location which includes beautiful pools, buildings, rooms, décor and landscaping. I love being at a resort and feeling at peace because of how my surroundings look and feel. However there are a few kinks that need to be worked out: When you arrive to the Puerto Vallarta airport, you are instantly bombarded by salesmen pretending to offer you info on your transfer bus. Not the fault of the resort but worth mentioning. The PVR airport is similar to the Cancun Airport in that manner; which is a negative aspect of the airport for me. Once you arrive to the resort, you immediately feel happy. The entrance has a large red sign and then you enter a gated community of villas and the resort. No welcome drinks in the lobby but check-in was fairly quick. The bellman drove us to our room and we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful décor and large balcony overlooking the adult pool and entrance to building 6. However, I was sharing a room with my husband and mother, which became awkward in a room with a bathroom door that doesn’t lock and a see-through shower. It was also my husband’s birthday so I asked via email, a week before my arrival, to have the room decorated for him. Only one bed had decorations and there was no champagne, welcome note, birthday message, desserts; nothing. Although the room we were given was beautiful, it was not the type of room advertised on their Instagram or official website. As such, I made note of my concerns to customer service and she forwarded me to the manager,Ms. Civeira. She moved us to a jungle bungalow (the type of room advertised on their site) and we were delighted. Moving was a bit stressful but definitely worth it. Also, champagne was sent to our new room. Room service at the resort is decent. It takes about 45 min to an hour and includes burgers, quesadillas, club sandwiches, Caesar salad, burritos, margarita pizza, etc. I was happy to see cultural items on the menu but since there is a kitchen next to building 6, I’m not sure why it travels all the way from the family pool; hence the 45 min wait. Adults-only breakfast at Huanacaxtle is better than Raixes. It’s more fresh and has a larger offering. The actual restaurant is also larger and fancier than Raixes. The omelette chef makes great omelettes but she takes a while to get started. Breakfast starts at 7:30 am but she won’t start making omelettes until about 8:00 am. I suppose it’s worth the wait but I would prefer to eat my omelettes with the rest of my meal as opposed to after my meal. Pools at the resort are gorgeous. The Adults-only section has 1 large infinity pool, 1 large Jacuzzi and 2 smaller Jacuzzis. The family section has 1 large infinity pool, a smaller Jacuzzi as well as a large shallow pool. Pool chairs in the adults-only section are beautiful but hard because they are wicker with no cushions. Pool chairs at the family pool are regular beige chairs which are more comfortable. I love the look of the chairs in the adults-only section but I wish they were more comfy. There is also a wellness pool with a smoothie bar that makes fresh fruit drinks. It includes an ice bath, waterfall and an outdoor shower. Food at the resort is a bit of a hit-and-miss. The A la cartes are good; Japanese being the best. Steakhouse was good but my steak was a bit overcooked. When I ordered medium in the Brazilian a la carte, I could not chew the meat. The snack bars are spectacular. Their best options are the buffalo wings, nachos Americano, and burgers. We ate them EVERYDAY. IT WAS SO GOOD. Dinner at Raixes was good but nothing fancy; which is why we did a la carte first and then ventured to the buffet to see the options. I will say that the buffet had great donuts, jalapeno poppers, fried fish, shrimp, etc. The beach restaurant is also good for food and drinks. There doesn’t seem to be a dress code for dinner. People walked in with marinas, sandals, short shorts, tshirts; which doesn’t bother me as long as I am not turned away for dressing up. The Makawe Spa was one of the reasons we booked this vacation. It reminds me of the resorts in Bali and Thailand so we took a lot of photos. As a group of 4, we booked milk baths and full body massages (80 mins,1650 pesos -approx. 115 CAD-, “Mecere”). Services were done in groups of 2, so my husband and I ventured into the hot stone pool and sauna while my mother and friend had their individual treatments. My husband described the sauna as extremely hot. We were given Hibiscus juice and apple snacks while we lounged in a cabana bed. Mecere starts off with a cool milk bath; which I shared with my husband for 30 minutes. it was then followed by a 50 min couples massage. both treatments were good but the massage was the best. She massaged my earlobes, my forehead, the back of my neck, my hands; FULL BODY. I would definitely recommend visiting the spa in this resort. It is gorgeous and worth the money. The bars were pretty good with service; the beach restaurant makes the fastest drinks but all bars are pretty good with time. None of my drinks were too strong. If anything they were too perfect which made me keep ordering more and trying new drinks. Entertainment is only at the family pool and was a bit lacking but that is understandable in this type of resort that encourages relaxation as opposed to partying. Nights were a bit more lively but I was not really a fan of their live music. Maid service is choppy at best. As previously mentioned, we were moved into a jungle bungalow on our 3rd day at the resort. Our room was cleaned mid-day on the first 2 days and then slowly declined after that. It went from no soap, to no hand/face towels, to not cleaning the bathtub. There were also may days that she forgot to replenish the coffee. For the remaining 3 days, our rooms were cleaned after 4 pm. The resort does have a VIP membership club but it is not of good value in my opinion because it does not include meals or airfare. However, the rooms/villas are definitely a nice upgrade in luxury so I wouldn’t advise someone not to get it. The “Mexican Fiesta” wasn’t much of a fiesta. No Mariachi band or piñatas just a live band consisting of 3 people singing off-key to old pop songs. The food at the buffet was decent but it was definitely not a fiesta. We left an hour into in. The beach was nice but not great. Puerto Vallarta has dark sand beaches so the water is not the turquoise colour found in other parts of mexico. Its also fairly rocky and hard to walk in to without water shoes. We did venture into the water a few times but just for a quick dip. The marina is to the left of the beach club; equipped with a fish market and restaurants. You can also find other restaurants and a public beach to the right of the beach club. There also beach vendors selling jewelry, crafts and clothing. They are a bit aggressive but willing to give you a deal. Our WestJet/Timmons tours representative was not very informative. We are used to 15-20 min presentations on excursions and pricing; as well as tips about the resort. Roberto gave us no such information and simply asked “what would you like to do”. Luckily, I had done a lot of research and already had activities in mind; I just needed prices. He advised us to take a $25 USD tour with Sun, Sea, and land. It was great. It lasted for most of the day and involved seeing highlights of Puerto Vallarta. We visited jewelry stores, craft stores, a monumental church, the Malecon boardwalk, a tequila factory and ended the tour at a seafood restaurant. This was the best meal of our entire vacation. The seafood platter is approximeately $50 USD (tip included) and serves 2 people: lobster, friend snapper, coconut shrimp, rice, salad and prawns. all orders come with garlic bread, nachos, pico de gallo and another dip. It was SOOO GOOOD and definitely worth it. All in all our vacation was great. We would definitely recommend this resort to people looking for something a little different than the party resorts of Cancun.

Great resort, just some minor improvements would make it excellent.

This is not a negative review i would definitely visit this resort again. There are just some things they could really improve upon to receive a 5 star rating from me. First the food at the buffet needs to be improved vastly not to be confused with the food at any of the sit down restaurants on property they were all excellent. Secondly transportation being the resort is built into the mountain its up and down hills so walking is a little tiresome they have transportation vans running throughout the course of the day they just need to run more frequently depending on the time you could wait upwards up to 20-30mins for a shuttle. Lastly the beds are really firm hard even and it wasn't just my room i was with 3 other couples and all their beds were the same. Again this is not a negative review we all thoroughly enjoyed our vacation but these are some improvements that would make this truly a 5 star resort.

We had a great experience at this resort. Pamela, Ricardo and Edgar were fantastic and met all our needs, including bug spray. If you go during rainy season make sure to pack some! They also were very accommodating with transport on the resort as it is VERY hilly. Celso, Marissa & Jose were top notch up at the adult pool, never waited long for food or drinks. Overall, the food was average, my only complaint would be the Steakhouse, avoid it if you can; however the staff were pleasant. We didn't go to the main buffet, only the adult and it was as expected for a buffet, however the chef was happy to make fresh eggs. I wish they had a better coffee situation, as it was lacking and the espresso machines were broken often. The natural pool and smoothie bar is also fantastic, and the spa beautiful and relaxing. The activities were fun and inviting, the staff are very animated! The beach was average, but the tacos are a must have if you go. Sayulita and San Pancho are close, only about 20 minutes away and are a nice day trip. Arrange to rent a car the day before to save some headache, but it was worth it to rent. The rooms were beautiful, we loved how the staff made towel buddies, I do wish they had left extra towels for use though, they used the towels for the buddies. Extra soaps and such would have been great too. They were wonderful about keeping our bar stocked with waters and refreshments, and the alcohol was top shelf! I should add that it is for sure a couples destination, we wouldn't take our kids. All in all, we would go again for sure!

Great resort and staff

Erick, Celso and Scarlett at the Adult Only pool are great. Always friendly with great food and drinks. Scarlett makes a great Veggie wrap while Erick and Celso always made sure we had drinks when we needed them. Resort has great WiFi signal. The concierge was helpful booking dinner reservations though the deal we had only included 2 dinners, the other nights were spent at the buffet. The Mexican buffet was great on Wednesday nights, the other night buffets were average. Highly recommend the spa as well, Nadia and Rachel were great.
