My partner and I booked this resort for our 10 year anniversary and were very intrigued by the resort being in the hills (not beach front). We were looking for a relaxing getaway and booked knowing that it was not beach front and did not have a disco or any kind of entertainment at night. The resort is definitely still a work in progress, as a few of the staff mentioned they building many more villas/rooms. Our room was up in the hills on one of the top floors and we had an amazing view! You're surrounded by lush plants and flowers, the scenery is just gorgeous! The pools are built into the sides of the hills and are almost high up to capture the amazing view. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful resorts I've been to. There are little shuttles that will take you around the resort, you just have to call, but they do take some time to get to you. We opted to walk all over the resort to get in some cardio, and the trails within the resort were beautiful! Definitely wouldn't recommend this place for anyone who has knee/hip/walking difficulties (pretty sure the website we booked on said this as well). The staff were very nice and friendly to us. You could definitely tell that the resort is understaffed though...we chose to hang out mostly by the main pool and the snack bar there took 45min-1 hr when ordering food. I think the main reason was that they had to go up up to the kitchen to get it made. The food was overall pretty good though, some variety in the buffet and the a la cartes were good. The Japanese restaurant was our favourite and we could have skipped the Italian (they were also very understaffed at this restaurant). However the staff were super friendly and always made sure our glasses were full of wine while we waited! One area that really bothered us both was the room and how it was cleaned. The first day there our sink flooded out into the bathroom. When the maintenance guys came to fix it they kept saying "cess pool" which really threw me off. Honestly there was an unhealthy smell coming from the sink for our entire stay. Our room was beautiful inside, however the sheets and pillows had stains on them and the towels had stains on them most days as well. Our shower floor was very dirty which we called to concierge to ask if it could be cleaned, unfortunately it didn't happen. The ladies usually came to clean our room around 5pm which was a little inconvenient as we would come back from the pool and want to shower and get ready for dinner. The one time we were actually in the room with the cleaning lady, she changed the towels and just wiped the rims of the glasses that were in the room (with tap water). This was a good indication to me that just the towels were replaced everyday and nothing was actually cleaned (toilet, shower, sink etc.) This bugged me because I've stayed at a lot of all inclusive resorts and they clean your room very thoroughly. I imagine if you don't have a lot of staff this would be difficult. We chose to look past this as we really just wanted to have a nice vacation and not spend the trip changing rooms. After reading other reviews it sounds like a lot of people experienced the same thing. The thing I wanted to note is the beach. There is a shuttle that comes every hour to pick you up from the resort to go to the beach. It's about a 10 min ride away and you pass through a cute little market that the driver will gladly drop you off at to shop (short walk from the beach). The beach is alright, their beach club looks to be under renovation of some sort. There are chairs and umbrellas and food in warming dishes next to the bar. We honestly liked the scenery from the resort better than the beach, so we stayed at the beach for an hour and then headed back. It's probably just personal preference, but when you have vacationed on a Caribbean beach, it just doesn't compare. Overall I think the resort was very nice, however it could definitely use some improvements. I strongly feel that the resort is quite pricey for what it offers. We really appreciated the staff, especially in the morning buffet and at the main pool snack bar. A little tipping definitely goes a long way as well. I don't think we will return to this resort as we found the demographic to be quite a bit older than we are (we're 28), and there wasn't much to do in the evenings besides drink and listen to the live band near the pool. If you're looking for a very relaxing, quiet vacation this place would be amazing!

Beautiful scenery lots of room for improvement will not return!

Grand Sirenis Matlali Hills Pros: Beautiful setting, pools and amazing pool side food and drinks Everything is a long walk of hills but Mario and Hugo are amazing the best! Elizabeth at the beach was the best too! Cons: Very short staff so sad to see the wonderful staff so overworked I server for the adult pool was not acceptable!!! No perks for SPK members at all! Disgusting beach....bathrooms not working, dirty, dogs everywhere, sharing with a local beach, beach chairs old and dirty...taken down in a cattle bus as a member was absolutely not acceptable! Will not return!

This hotel has its pros and cons Cons. Hotel Lists 4 ala carte restaurants but they are not all open at the same time. Making it very difficult to reserve them, and enjoy them all in our week visit Our concierge was less that helpful trying to make reservations. Either his system was down or he could not make a reservation more that a day in advance (see pros for the solution) Room service- we ordered a sandwich at 1130 pm and were awoken at 230AM to room service with a very cold clubhouse and fries. Housekeeping-at least twice our rooms were cleaned and we were left without towels ( even tho we left them hanging up showing we were willing to reuse them). Mini bar and coffee were only restocked once during our stay and only after several requests Sometimes the room was still being cleaned at 5PM making it difficult to have a rest and dress before dinner Gym-very small . Basically only 2-3 people can work out at once. Wine- Mexican wine is never the best but on Jan 13th in the Italian Restaurant we were served a bottle that had gone bad. I am not a wine snob but this bottle had turned to vinegar. When we spoke to our server about it he smelled it and said it was fine. We refused to drink it and eventually he begrudgingly brought another bottle that was fine. Pros Beautiful quiet mountain side location with nice views and wild birds. Numerous pools of varying noise levels.Something for everyone. Very relaxed feel at the main pool, with some activities but not so many it hurts your hearing. Staff- we had some bad service but the following people really made the trip for us Juan- in the RAIXES buffet. He was the best. No matter what meal we were there for he would get us a table and bring our preferred drinks. His service thru-out our stay was outstanding. The rest of the staff in RAIXES was also very good but Juan stood out Ulysies ( not sure of the spelling) at the front desk was great. When our concierge failed us Ulysies would fix the problem. He was great to deal with Brian (security guy in the adult upper pool area) Even though Brian spoke very little English and my Spanish is very limited Brian went above and beyond to try and help. When the concierge was late arriving at his station Brian kept trying to locate him for us. When we had no towels in our room at 5 pm Brian radioed housekeeping and they arrived shortly. When our room keys failed to work Brian got someone there quickly to open the doors. Carlos- He and the other shuttle drivers were great. Carlos went a little further and really made us feel welcome and always had a big smile. Jorge-Upper and main pool Funny guy who always seemed to know when we needed a beverage. Brian - cook at the Japanese restaurant. Although we heard Brian was new to this position he did a great job on the cooking show and the food was great. Jungle Hike-Great walk thru nice terrain. Steep in spots but a good workout with some nice vistas

fantastic place, but not a beach resort

we are in our early 60s and we were there last week as a couple; 3-10th January. if you are a nature buff, you will love this place. nestling in the hills, a tropical forest, it is full of pretty birds and a wide variety of flora. the view of the atlantic from many vantage points (rooms, buffet restaurant, hills) is awe inspiring. the place is vary tastefully and artistically done--you can see and feel it in the little details. if you wanna just chill in a quiet place with great ambience and natural beauty, then this is a perfect place. However, if you are a foodie, then be prepared to accept some compromises. the salads and fruits were almost always stale, the food was very average, though the speciality restaurants were not so bad. overall service was really good; all the staff members were very polite and always eager to serve. But for food, i would give full marks to this place, however, for me, the natural beauty of the place did compensate for food. as so many have written, beach is far and the shuttle operates only 10-5.30, so you cant be on the beach early morning or late evening (though you could take a taxi for about 200 pesos). the beach is just a small strip and nothing great.

Not what we expected

I want to preface this review by saying we are not in anyway demanding travelers. We have been on numerous vacations over our lives and for the first time ever we were so disappointed we actually elected to conclude our stay and request another resort. The good Very nice and quiet setting Pool area was nice Joaquin in the night club bar was fantastic The bad Service was awful. Very unfriendly staff Rooms weren’t cleaned Pool bar wasn’t restocked no rum for two days, Tried to order room service and order was met with a simple no Buffets were horrible. No selection. Breakfast was the worst. Nothing to eat and no room to sit and enjoy This was a bad experience and definitely not 4 star quality We left on day three for grand palladium which was a much better experience. I have been to a grand Sirenis in riviera maya and this was not the same experience I had there. Keep away.
