Visually beautiful resort: but lots of bias and prejudice and not handicap accessible

Visually beautiful resort: but lots of bias and prejudice and not handicap accessible We booked this hotel via Apple Vacations and upon arrival we were greeted with a hola and drink of our choice. We requested a room on an upper floor and while waiting for our room we went and had lunch. We returned and obtained our keys and the luggage was sent to our room. Recommend getting the highest floor possible with a view of the water otherwise there are a lot of lower floor rooms with views of the garden. The grounds are beautiful. One huge swimming pool that snakes around a swim up bar and waterfall. There is greenery everywhere. There is one main dining area that is buffet with indoor and outdoor patio seating looking out toward the pool. There are two main high-rise buildings: one looks over the pool and distant view of the water: loud due to the location. The second building is more toward the back of the property with excellent views of water but road noise. There are large uneven stone walkways throughout the property. There are approx. 30 steps down from the lobby to where everything is. Then more stone paths down to the beach and two swim up pools looking out toward the water and cruise ships. This property is beautiful. The swim up pools very nice, and the small beach area comfortable and very safe snorkeling with lots of fish right off the beach approx. 5 feet of water. There are three specialty restaurants and you must make reservations to go. The El Mexicano restaurant we did not try. The El Italiano Restaurant is very romantic, wonderful salad bar and great menu. Our favorite was the El Caribeno Restaurant: the service is impeccable: Omar is fabulous. The food was fabulous and there is also a salad bar. The buffet La Veranda restaurant is horrendous: the eggs were cold and we went to two different omelet woman and both times we had raw eggs in the omelets. The food is heavy on Mexican cuisine. This resort needs help the buffet restaurant: really it was horrible. The food was cold and they were never checking food temperatures (like Iberostar does). The serving staff used their bare hands to pick up the food. Our waiter was excellent: Victor he greeted us and stopped and talked every time he saw us. There is also an ice-cream shop that also have deserts. The girl in the ice cream shop used her bare hands to transfer the old ice cream to new ice-cream. There is no attention to hygiene by the staff: no hair nets, no gloves and no washing hands. There is no attention to hygiene by the staff: no hair nets, no gloves and no washing hands. At the outside grill where there are hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos: the person touches raw meat and then your hamburger roll and it is disgusting. I would have liked hand sanitizer: none. This place is a communicable disease outbreak waiting to happen Our room was very nice: we requested a king bed got two queens. Refrig, safe, ironing board and iron and hairdryer. You are given two bottle water, 2 beers, and softdrinks daily. Our room housekeeper was excellent: he was so very pleasant and our room was cleaned every day. The beds were okay. The sink is outside the toilet and shower area and again not handicap accessible. Towels are made of good quality. Wi-Fi in lobby only; none in the rooms There are activities every day and it is posted on a board. The night entertain was good: there was Mexican dance and Karaoke and Maya night which unfortunately used heavy smoke incense causing a horrible asthmatic attack. Overall the staff is very rude and hardly spoke. There are like vultures trying to get you to come to the presentation about becoming a member. They have this system if you have a gold bracket you are a member and you are well taken care of, anything else it is doubtful. We did listen to the presentation. The young lady who presented the information was definitely biased I am going to start telling my boss that I dont speak English because you Americans dont buy anything, the Mexicans buy it all and then she made gesture with her hand of slanted eyes dont buy either. We meet no less than 8 people and spent hours because I loved the property not the people or the food. The introductory film has no African Americans or Asians. The entertainment at night spoke mostly Spanish and hardly translated anything into English. While sitting at the pool or the beach the wait staff never came up to the Americans only the Hispanics. This resort is so prejudice it is painful because they do not embrace cultural diversity: not in their attitude, their conversations or their interactions with their guest. Except for Omar, Victor and Efren and our housekeeper: there was no positive interaction. This resort needs a major overall: getting the broken elevator fixed, educating your staff about proper food handling and service and embracing those of other cultures or skin color and until that happens this resort will not succeed and is set to fail because there is no excuse for bias and prejudice and poorly cooked food and handicap inaccessibility.

Great hotel for the money

We love Park Royal. We've stayed numerous times. The food is good, the people/staff are awesome. Many have been there years and we see them year after year. The staff is friendly and appear to be happy working there. The rooms are okay, hot water usually needs to be adjusted, air works, it's a fine room to sleep in since that's really all we use it for. The food is good in all the restaurants. We don't like the pants requirement for men but have learned to deal with it after so many years. Other than that, no complaints about the hotel or staff. It's also in a good location, just a little over a mile into town. I would highly recommend it as it's one of the best hotels for the money.

There were little bugs all over bathroom counter and on top of the counter in the room of the hotel. The beds need to be replaced! Super hard and uncomfortable. The air did not work properly in our room. The repair man came in to look at it but it was never fixed. A few days we had no wash cloths. We asked for some and the maid said there were none.

Not your resort

This Resort is not only your resort but have to share with any locals and tourist. Resort sells day passes to anyone so it gets a little crowded at times. Elevator was broken several times during our stay, getting a lady stuck in it one morning. Mexican 5 star Restuarant cooks steak one way no matter how you order, well done and tough. Most of staff was very friendly. Very limited items on room service. Several of us were sick at least 3 out of the 7 days there. We will not ever stay at the Grand Park Royal Cozumel again!!! Also need to watch your exchange rate there because if they know you aren't sure, it will change from cab to cab and vendor to vendor. We will be doing a large group trip in the next couple years and it damn sure won't be there!

We were at the resort at the beginning of March and when the opportunity arose for a vacation at the beginning of May, we did the same trip again. The location is perfect, the facility is very nice and very clean, and service is outstanding. Loved every minute of our trips.

The hotel staff were great especially the event staff who we got to know throughout Thur the week. The food was rarely good. I think we had two good dinner meals and a few good breakfasts during our stay otherwise it was pretty subpar. The snack bars had littl variety and the quality of food was lacking. The infinity pools were very beautiful to lay at but thit pool walls were a little dirty. Had a great time despit these things.

selling nightmare

Staff was trying to sell us on things from first minute to last. Told us not to speak to apple staff and only talk to them. Air conditioner did not work near 80 and higher in our room the entire trip and when we asked repeatedly for help they promised to look into it and never did. Had incident of waking up to security shining lights in our room. A majority of staff seemed annoyed and wanted nothing to do with assisting you in restaurants. We will not frequent this location again. Our first experience with apple at another location was far better.

The location, cleanliness of the entire property, the service are all 5 star. The food was ok and the main pool was rather dirty, but all in all it is a very nice resort. Luis in the sports bar is a treasure and all the staff work very hard to keep the property in to shape. I would definitely go back!

Wheelchair Accessibility
JACOB P.
Feb 28 2017
To give this review perspective, we are a same-sex married couple that traveled to this resort for our honeymoon. One of us is also bound to a wheelchair. The Good: This hotel and its staff were great and friendly. The food was pretty good, and the selection was not bad. Adult and non-adult beverages were very good and it was not hard to get them. Entertainment varied from night-to-night and some shows were better than others, but I really appreciate the hard work that the entertainment staff do to try to vary things up, they also all had positive attitudes. The fire show, and Karaoke nights were our favorites. For an able-bodied person I would give this resort a 4/5 The Bad: The issue we had is that this hotel is listed as being wheelchair accessible (which is only partially true). The issue is that the entire grounds including ramps (except in buildings and areas around the pool) are made of a Mayan rock and are very bumpy and hard for someone in a wheelchair to get around on. When pushing my husband in his wheelchair it looked like he was sitting on a jackhammer because the ground is not level. There were other people in similar situations, and people with walkers, or balance issues that were having difficulties as well. It's not comfortable to walk around barefoot on, and if you have stiletto heels, be careful! Some of the restaurants (Mexican, Italian and Caribbean) and one of the pools also have stairs to them, the staff were more than willing to help lift the wheelchair up these stairs so it wasn't as big of an issue. Also, there is a huge flight of stairs between the lobby and the resort, so someone from the staff would bring my husband in his wheelchair around the back employee hallways to get him up to the front desk area (They are working on installing an elevator however). For a mobility-challenged person I would give this resort a 2/5 (But they are making an effort to improve this). Overall, we would not go back unless the mobility issues were improved, but that is a situation many people are not in. I loved the people, and overall we had a great honeymoon. Heads up that someone will likely try to give you free things/discounts to go to a 90 minute "Vacation Club" timeshare presentation, just a heads up in case you are not interested.

This is our 5th stay at this resort in Cozumel,MX and as expected it was exceptional. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help with anything needed. The resort is always making changes to accommodate guests and insuring your stay to be fun and relaxing. We personally like this resort for all the accommodations that are on site and the close proximity to things to do. The resort is also nestled in beside the cruise ship peer and is really nice to watch the ships come and go everyday.

Disappointed

Rooms were terribly hot. We had our air looked at twice but never cooled. Will it stay here again. Service wasn’t great. Wouldn’t keep room stocked with water. Reservations for restaurants in hotel could only be made at noon each day the day of and the line was long. Waited for over 30 mins to make reservation. Very disappointed over all and will not stay here again.

We visited here in 2010 and it has changed so much, the food is not that good, we actually ate out more because the food is so bland, they continue to try to sell you stuff, like a time share( that was a big pain in the butt) had a burnt out light in the room and the phone stopped working, and they never came and fixed it, it’s a pretty property and the snorkeling here is great but I am staying somewhere else next time I go to Cozumel

Agree with other reviewer -- Grand Park Royal Cozumel has "taken a step back."

My family has gone to the Grand Park Royal Cozumel 3 times in the last 2 years (March/April of 2017, July of 2017 and June/July of 2018). I wrote a previous review after our first trip. I still agree with most of what I said, however, during my last trip, I noticed several changes to the resort -- none of them positive, in my opinion. Change No. 1: The resort always required reservations for the a la carte restaurants. We would arrive and make reservations for different spots throughout our stay all at once. Now, they take reservations for each day only on that day beginning at 10AM and once the spots fill up, they close reservations until the next day. This was inconvenient for two reasons. First, we were there to go scuba diving and, as such, were not available at 10AM on most days. Secondly, the spots filled up and by the end of our stay people started lining up around 9AM -- meaning an hour wait to schedule a reservation for dinner. Change No. 2: The Caribbean Restaurant (which is, in my family's opinion, the best of the restaurants) is adults only for dinner now. We ate there one day for lunch and the air conditioning was not working, but we would have enjoyed having it as a dinner option. Change No. 3: The infinity pool is now adults only. Since there are bars at each of the pools, this change doesn't seem to make much sense and we lost the opportunity for some great pictures with our family at that pool. Also, the infinity pool tends to be one of the warmer pools, so we did not get to enjoy that feature while we were there. Change No. 4: Taco dinners in the Bikini Bar were discontinued. The Taco Dinners that were offered in the Bikini Bar in the evenings were some of the best dinners available at the resort and did not require reservations. The Taco Dinners did not appear to be offered any night we were there. Change No. 5: A decline in the quality of food on the Buffet. The inability to obtain reservations would not have been as bothersome if the food on the Buffet matched up with the quality on prior trips. This time, we found the food to have fewer quality offerings, to be more bland, and to have less variety from day to day. Change No. 6: In times past, I have booked spa appointments through the spa and paid for them at the front desk in advance of the service. This trip, I was told that the payment could be made at the spa at the time of service -- in cash or credit card (mastercard or visa only). When I showed up for my appointment, they told me they could only accept cash. They directed me to the ATM in the gift shop to get cash (but from experience, that ATM is extremely expensive to use). As such, I did not get a massage this time. One thing that hasn't changed is the great location, affordable prices, and access to the Dive Shop Cozumel, which has an amazing staff, excellent equipment, and is the main reason we will be returning in the near future.

Great, friendly service!

Timeshare: beware of the staff trying to offer discounts & a presentation. This is all about offering you a timeshare! Luckily we were warned about this beforehand. Location: there is not a lot of beach access which was upsetting. The small area of beach is full of rocks. This was my fault for not researching more on the location. I was expecting more of a sandy beach experience like Cancun. Staff: everyone was super friendly!! I did not get the opportunity to make dinner reservations (only 1 night) so we spent most days eating at the buffet style restaurant. Fernando Santiago, Emilio Pech and Alejandro Cen were excellent waiters and very helpful and friendly! Gracias por tu recomendacion del "suero" Alejandro! :) I would be open to visit another Grand Park Royal Resort, however I would prefer Cancun only because of the beaches!

Great trip for a quick getaway!🌞🌞🌞🌞

Overall, this was a great trip! The resort was nice and most people are very friendly!!!! Louis at the BarChac Mool (something like that) was wonderful!!!! However, Lazaro at the sports bar was amazing!!! He was friendly and a great bartender!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ We met many wonderful and friendly people at this resort!!!! They could speed up the service in the Mexicano and Italian restaurants. The Caribbean restaurant was by far my favorite meal! Unfortunately it does not have air conditioning and we had a little sweat going with dinner. Thankfully the Caribbean restaurant did not take near as long for service as the other two! The picture I saw prior to going it looked like the cruise ships were off to the side of you. This is not the case!!!!!! They are directly in Front of your view!!!! Beyond that it is a great trip for a little break from reality!
