2nd visit.......mostly still grand - late September/early October

We are a middle aged couple, very fond of AI beach resorts, and have visited many in Caribbean islands and different parts of Mexico. We really love Mexico and enjoy our time in that beautiful country. We had visited another part of this resort 7 years ago, so we knew what to expect. ROOM: Our room was not large, but the high ceiling made it airy and pleasant. Bed and linens were very comfortable. The bathroom, also not large, was well designed, with good quality bath products. Housekeeping did a wonderful job each day. A/C worked well, despite seasonal hot, humid weather. FOOD: We ate at Tikal and La Hacienda buffets for breakfast and dinner respectively, and Gran Azul for lunch. In general, the menus did not change from day to day, but there was such a variety, and the food was so delicious, we did not mind in the least. Every meal consisted of fresh ingredients, well prepared. There were many tasty vegetable dishes, some quite simple, and optional sauces and garnishes. Different meat and fish dishes were also enjoyed. Not a single meal disappointed. BARS: At first we had after dinner cocktails in the Colonial lobby bar, or the air conditioned sports bar, but finding the noise level a bit too much, we went around to the Kantenah lobby and discovered the peace and quiet of the Hemingway Bar, which also has a HUGE selection of books for your reading pleasure! We spent some happy times in the Hemingway, sipping Bombay Sapphire martinis. ;-) BEACH: Beach conditions are very important to us. We knew that much of the beach is coral, but that a couple of areas are accessible, even without water shoes. My husband had planned to snorkel, but high winds and overcast skies interfered. The winds also brought seaweed mixed with garbage, which made swimming very unpleasant. There were a couple of calm days, however, and we could see many tropical fish, which would come and swim around you, especially if you had a banana or bread to entice them. STAFF: I have to say, the staff are pretty outstanding. They work very hard to make sure your stay is enjoyable. They are friendly and professional, and many of them speak English. We had a couple of minor issues with our room and the front desk sent someone, and everything was resolved promptly. We appreciated their attention very much. GROUNDS: A big part of our enjoyment was watching the many animals who live in the gardens and on the beach. Shore birds abound, and the entrance is graced by a pond with a flock of brilliant, graceful flamingos. Iguanas are everywhere, as are the shy agouti (sereque), which is like an outdoor guinea pig with long hind legs, and the mischievous coatis, who are very endearing when they try to beg for food. However, signs ask you not to feed them human food. They do very well on their own, digging for worms and insects. If you love animals, you will enjoy these charismatic local fauna. ETC: After all these positive comments, I'm sorry to have to add something negative. As mentioned above, we came in the rainy season, and most days the rains were very heavy and prolonged. The weather seemed to present some challenges to the hotel. There were issues with leaking ceilings in the buffets, and a power outage left some of the walkways between buildings completely in the dark for at least two nights. This is not merely inconvenient, but hazardous. On the other hand, a BIG point in their favor is that they have done away with towel cards! HURRAH!

My wife and I booked a regular deluxe room to celebrate our 40 years of marriage. We booked the GP because we have stayed in this resort 3 times previously and at other GPs in Jamaica and Punta Cana. Once again we were amazed at the Mexican hospitality. We were showered with attention time and time again...(if you dont want it just say no and move on) I want to say the names all of the people who were so kind to us but there would be well over 20 and that is too many too list. The front desk was great and even though you cant get your room until 3pm we received a nice welcome cool towel and a drink. Our clerk chatted with us in almost flawless english and I am embarrassed to say I know very little conversational spanish. The property is just absolutely beautiful, they have so many swimming pools I couldnt count them...lots of secret adult pools...very serene if thats what you want or got to one of the bigger pools for more lively fun. The management graciously sent us a fruit basket and bottle of champaigne, thank you so much that was very kind! The restaurants and buffets were great and everything was as it should be (clean and hot). I really cant say enough about the service, no tips expected but are well receive should you decide to do so. Every employee (tipped or not) always said that it was their pleasure to serve really was amazing. I found myself several times embarassed because I didnt tip someone who went above and beyond the call of duty (when you live in your bathing suit you just dont carry cash). I dont want to ramble but here are some highlights, you have to get the short ribs at the El dorado, they were the most tender that I have ever eaten, go to any buffet and just go carzy its very easy to do. I drank cartado;s all day every day (esspress/steamed milk/five dollars each at at all inclusive). I am not big on alcohol but what we did drink...mojitos etc was fine. We felt safe and secure thew entire trip (also a shout out to Javier at AGI tours for the private transportation to and from the airport..on time again and easy peasy to use) I could go on but I just got back and wanted to post while I remember it. There was so much more...PS I won the archery contest and got a bottle of tequilla. tried paddle boarding etc. FANTASTIC TRIP my wife and I love this place and cant wait to come back!

Lovely hotel worth its 5 stars

We chose this hotel as it looked like it had more character than any other on offer in the area or group and were not disappointed. The hotel is a modernish hotel with a classic design, all the buildings and pool umbrellas have a thatched top and the lobby is open sided giving it a very airy feel, chairs throughout are of bamboo or wicker to add to the feel. The resort has been carved into the mangrove jungle, literally. I have been told that this jungle is government protected and the fact the remaining areas around the villas and walkways is left untouched was a stipulation of the hotel being built. It works very well, you do feel like you are walking through the jungle, particularly with the wildlife that is present, we have seen coati (long nose raccoon), Seraque (large guinea pigs), lizards, toucan and other colourful birds as well as the resident flamingos. Add to all this the excellent service, including waiter service for drinks throughout and excellent food choice (more later) make it one of the best hotels we have been to. My wife and I often go out on trips and when picking up other travelers by coach would often comment on how nice other hotels are, in this case it was ours that look the best. So despite some minor issues detailed below, It has been added to our list of hotel chains to reuse (only other is currently Riu). Pools The main pool is large and very clean, unfortunately it tends to be quite noisy, the background music is quite loud and at lunch time they have live music at the pool buffet and beach snack bar only about 50 metres away, and still leave the pool background music on ?!?! A complaint was made without success and I have forwarded the details on to head office. The adult only pool is lovely, usually very peaceful (depending on your fellow users) and kept this way by the staff, but you need to be there early to get a bed though, the pool is small and the beds are very limited. Spa The Spa is excellent and very tranquil, it includes a gym should you feel the need, a steam room, a sauna, a large hot jacuzzi with shower heads, a few smaller warm jacuzzis and many small jacuzzis as part of a snaking pool river that joins this area to the dedicated spa pool and bar area. The prices given in the brochure put us off our idea of starting the holiday with a good massage, a full body for 50 minutes being 189 USD each. But wait for the spa staff touting round the pool, they offer at least 50% off, we got an 80 minute massage and three days facilities access for 100 USD each, well worth it. Weather We were in Mexico for the last week in September and the first week in October, the weather was a mix, some days it was raining, some partly overcast and others mostly sunny. We did have two full days without sun, but it was always around 30'C, if visiting out of season ( May to Nov ?) take an umbrella. Drinks The hotel has many branded spirit bottles on display, although if you ask for a G&T you will get the local gin, but all you need to do is specify a brand and it will be used no problem, this includes Bombay Safire, Bacardi, and many other good ones, the only change to this is wine, anything but the house wines incurs a charge. Food There are a lot of places to eat, and we did not visit all available so I am only reviewing those we did. For the Colonial and the Kentanh there are three main buffet restaurants, four a la-carte and a buffet /snack bar on the beach. The two main buffet restaurants in the main building are excellent, both offer mostly the same food choice but we found the Hacienda, the larger of the two, the best for us. There is also a smaller buffet restaurant near the pool but we found this had food that should have been hot (burgers, chips etc) that was actually cold, after two uses we decided to go back to the main buffet restaurant for lunches, well worth the very short extra walk. A complaint had been made about the hot food being cold but no change by the end of our stay, this detail has been forwarded to head office. The snack bar on the beach has a small buffet section, and a snack menu from which you can order burgers pizza etc. this is open 24 hours. A la-carte Mexican Surprisingly disappointing, we chose this first as our host country thinking that they would show off their skills and quinine, but the food for was quite uncared and slightly bland. Eldarado A steak restaurant and very good, we went there three days and loved them all. Changthai Thai restaurant, very very spicy (Mexican strength) but lovely taste Sumptuous Japanese restaurant lovely tastes particularly if you know what you are ordering. You need to book for a show table which is worth doing once, but you do not need to book for a side table. Ribs and more An American themed restaurant, Ok if you like ribs or burgers. Brazilian They bring 4 or 5 type of meat out to you on skewers, and serve it to you at your table, the skewers are on show in the kitchen area cooking. A nice concept, but as we were out of season it did not work, as the amount of meat cooked outweighed that server so the meat ends up overcooked In all like I said above despite the minor issues we had a great time, the staff are lovely and very willing to help any way they can, tips are accepted and often sought on trips as usual, tips of 20/50/100 Peso's is good (GBP £2.5/£5/£10)

Memorable & Amazing Holiday!

We stayed at the Grand Palladium Colonial May 2016 (sorry for the late review) and it was amazing. Booked through First Choice - we couldn't have asked for a better location and resort to unwind. Made up of three resorts, we chose the Colonial due to its disabled friendly central location. HOTEL The decor was grand and the scenery beautiful. The resort is surrounded by protected rainforest full of wildlife. There is an alligator sanctuary, howler monkeys, and giant iguanas etc. The beach and sea was spotless and picturesque. Every day you could go exploring and discover something new. There are several pools that host a variety of activities incl. swim-up bars and jacuzzi's within the pools. The adult pool is hidden away, smaller and quieter than the others so there is literally a location for all. The venue is very wheelchair friendly. Make sure you experience the hammocks on the beach, swaying in the ocean breeze, and the 4-poster sun bed by the salt water pool. FOOD & DRINK With 13 different restaurants to choose from, you can eat a different cuisine every night and experience a range of cultures including: Spanish, Mexican, Italian, American, Japanese, Brazilian etc. All amazing, authentic and included in the all inclusive. Though only the Japanese restaurant is the only one that truly requires a booking, it is worth booking for all the others as well just to ensure you don't have to wait too long for a table. Can't be asked to get dressed up, the buffets have enough variety to fill you up. The beach bars also have themed stalls on various days including paella etc. The cocktails are plentiful and delicious made with fresh ingredients and not just syrupy substitutes. Check out the adult pool for the bar tenders famous Baileys Cocktail... very addictive. SERVICE We cannot fault any of the staff for their helpfulness, attitude and dedication. We recommend tipping well to ensure you are "looked after", especially at the main lobby bars which can get rather busy at night once the entertainment has died down. Make sure you learn how to drink tequila properly whilst here. All in all, this was a truly amazing holiday and we are already looking into visiting one of their sister resorts in Jamaica or Brazil purely because of their work ethic, style and attitude to service. This resort truly has everything anyone could want from a holiday and considering the amount of families with babies and children, our holiday was still romantic and quiet. My only advice is to make sure that you generously apply mosquito spray etc daily. The surrounding rainforest can leave you rather bitten.

Incredible!!!! Davidddd and Diego

I have traveled to several all inclusive resorts including two in Cancún. This resort is by far the best. We are the buffet everyday for breakfast and lunch at both Colonial and White Sand. There are more options at colonial, but white sand is very good too. We ate at a Japanese Steakhouse twice and it was very good (Sushi and Hibachi) we ate at the steakhouse in colonial twice and that was incredible. (I recommend the cowboy steak, it’s juicy and every bit of 25 oz. the Brazilian steakhouse is pretty good too, but the service is definitely better at the steakhouse. The service was incredible!!!!!! Two employees that stood out were Diego and David. Diego works the poolside service at white sand and makes sure that you always have what you need. Whether it’s a cold beer, an exotic shot, or a glass of ice water, he was always back to great us within 5 minutes. (We were never thirsty). David, David, David; #Bell Boy #the man where #the legend... where do it start. We had an engagement proposal and David gave us a ride. He waited 30 minutes while we took photos. Every night (including that night), he made sure we had a ride to the suite and a ride to our restaurants. Let’s be clear, because of those two (Diego and David), this was the best trip I’ve ever had. The food and atmosphere are incredible, just like Jamaica, punta cana, Bahamas, etc., the difference was the food, DIEGO, and DAVID. Because of these two, my next vacation will be here!!! p.s. David had our room decorated with champagne and rose petals. I’m not that into this kind of thing but my wife thought it was the most romantic thing ever. #happywifehappylife
