TripAdvisor Support Team Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa Akumal Superb not quite 5* 586165804 We recently returned from a two week all inclusive stay at the Colonial Resort and it was superb. It was my first visit to Mexico and we will definitely return. The service, food, entertainment, pools, resort etc was amazing. In particular the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The place is immaculate and the grounds were lovely with lots of different animals roaming freely. We did trips to Coba which included canoeing, zip wire and and a swim in a sink hole underground and a trip to Tumla both were great. We had a few days of torrential rain during our stay and used this time to visit the spa which was terrific. Our only little gripe was the rooms could do with an update. The first room we had smelt damp but we were moved next door which was fine. We would stay in the White Sands resort next time. Oh and try not to visit during the American spring break. The place was over run by loud, obnoxious Americans who would congregate in the Colonial reception bar at night. The way some of them spoke to the staff was very rude. Overall we had a fantastic holiday and will be returning soon.

Loved it!

I absolutely loved this place. The food was incredible and I never had any problem finding something I liked. The staff was friendly almost to a fault and could not have been more helpful. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. We especially loved the pools and the kids' water park. I have only two suggestions. One, the rooms are in dire need of more lighting. They were simply too dark. Two, the urinals need to be lowered. My 7-year-old son flat-out could not use them. Please lower them so that anyone under 5' 5" can use them. Other than that, this resort was amazing. I doubt you can find a better place anywhere for the money. Great job.

My husband and I were unsure were we wanted to go when a friend recommended the Palladium, he raved about it so we booked it. Absolutely life changing for us! There are 3 resorts within the Palladium and you have the access to use any and all accommodations at any of them. The ala carte restaurants were fabulous, the food was amazing and the service from the staff was outstanding. The buffets were pretty standard with good food and plenty of it. Countless pools to choose from, with accommodations for families, couples and handicap. All very well maintained. The room was fine. we had a nice patio it was always clean and no bugs of any sort. Frankly we weren't in it enough to care! Tons of wildlife to see. Drinks of any sort readily available, the only thing I can say bad about the bars were they didn't have any Budweiser products but as they say "when in Cancun", so we adjusted. The staff were all outstanding!! At times there were a few language barriers but nothing major and we never felt as though our needs were not being met. We enjoyed learning some of the local language and we taught them some English as well. For being so large it is a very quiet resort and there was never a time when we went to the beach, pool or restaurant and couldn't find a lounger, table or a quiet moment alone. We took advantage of locking up our electronics in the room safe and enjoyed some people time. The only negative thing I could say is we expected those classic white sand beaches and although they were white sand there was also a lot of seaweed! It seems as though it is a problem all over, from what we were told the fertilizer that all the resorts use has caused an over growth of seaweed which breaks off and of course washes up on the shore. The resort was very vigilant about cleaning it up daily and it never caused a problem for us, just something to be aware of. I can't say enough about the resort, the staff and the overall experience, we are going back and taking the whole family with us.

Fun place, and a good option for famalies

I went with my wife, my 2 daughters, (aged 7 and 3) and my 2 nieces, (aged 13 and 9) and we stayed in building 20 on the ground floor with connecting Jr. Suites. The room(s): The bathrooms were small however they were mostly marble and the lighting was nice so it gave off a nice ambiance.

It's good but there is far better...Not 5 star !

First off, if I could have given this place a 3 and half I would but begrudgingly I will give it 4 stars. We stayed at the Grand Palladium Colonial for 11 nights (2 adults and 1 child) and returned last week and although it was approx 12 years ago we were at this resort you can see standards have slipped when I really hoped it would be the same or better, bearing in mind how much competition there is out there. First the good ; Appearance is generally very good and everywhere seemed to be on the main clean and tidy and the decor bright and colourful, with some exceptions that i'll come back to. Vast grounds with plenty of wildlife to see, including the resident animals consisting of flamingos and crocodiles. The beach was quite clean and the staff were doing their best to clear the seaweed that kept appearing but it never stopped anyone going in for a dip. Main pool is very big and always seemed to be plenty of sun loungers during the day so no issues there. Kids pool is also quite big with plenty of slides and more than enough to keep little ones happy. Kids club also was useful and our 9 year old went there for a couple of days and really enjoyed the variety of activities to do. Food was also good, the buffet was always the same which is a shame because some variation would have been nice. The specialty restaurants that we tried were all good, again with some exceptions that i'll come back to, but definitely the Japanese is a must to try and a really good experience. Rooms were clean and tidy but the beds just seemed too small to be double's and the mattresses very un-comfortable. On the main the staff always said hello (except the front desk, see below) and some you could have a good laugh and joke with. Okay then the bad ; Whilst the appearance on the whole was good some of the seating areas in the restaurants do not reflect that this place touts itself as a 5 star resort ( bear this in mind whilst reading on ). The seats in the steakhouse had dirty and worn out cushions that clearly need replacing. The same applied also to the Mexican, which as another stated as a dedicated mexican restaurant it just did not cut it for quality which was disappointing. ALL the speciality restaurants should also be bookable only, you either have to go to them early or very late because if you go from 7:30pm you can be waiting an hour or longer, make them all bookable so as to stop people wasting their time for something they may or may not get in. Whilst the main pool was fine in sheer size the level of chlorine or whatever agent used was way too much. The white and blue swim shorts I used for 2 days had turned yellow !. This did not wash out on our return so these went straight in the bin, never have I been to resort and encountered this issue. The swim up bar also was a disgrace !. 2 days before we left a 3 feet section of the bar had broken off and debris was just left in the pool, again this is not the standard I expected. No attempt was made to corden off that area of the bar, no attempt made of a temporary repair and more loose material was ready to drop into the pool. The debris in the pool was a hazard in itself as you couldn't help but often tread on it !. As mentioned again elsewhere there is an issue with available drinks, when you happen to only drink certain types and the main bar runs out of all of them by 10 o'clock then somethings not right. Tanqueray, Jim Beam, Jamesons you name it always just seemed to vanish, it was not because they HAD run out it's just no one could be bothered to get fresh supplies so far easy to tell me and other's waiting that there is none. Lastly check out, no attempt whatsoever to ask me how my stay was, any problems, can we do anything absolutely nothing, not a word !!. I had a bottle of wine to pay for but not once was any sort of conversation about my time there or quality of my stay mentioned, I was just given my receipt and that was it !. Hence, this write up so thank god for Trip advisor so other's can be warned and I finally get to say my bit. I am not saying for one moment I would have got anything out of the situation for stating my issues but when I stay at a premier inn I at least get asked if my stay was okay. Again this highlights why this place is definitely not 5 star and barely a 4, the attention to detail is just not there. My family and I stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya 3 years ago and I was sure the Colonial would have been better but sadly this is not the case, the Maya was far better and I think my Trip advisor review that I did for that hotel reflects this. Sorry Grand Palladium, the potential is there but you need to work on the finer details !.
