Lovely Resort and Perfect Beach!!

We just returned from 2 weeks at the Palladium Bavaro. This was our first time in the Dominican Republic, our vacations have always been the east coast of Mexico, which included staying twice at the Palladium White Sands. One of the big reasons why we waited so long to visit the DR was that there are very few direct flights through from Calgary during the time frame that we go. There was a good deal so we jumped on it, milk run and all. Originally we were booked for the Punta Cana section, but upgraded to the Bavaro section and we were very happy with the change of rooms. The resort is huge, but there is resort transportation that will pick you up and take you to where you want to go. We found the buffets to be excellent, as well as the selection of a la carte restaurants. We didn't have any problems getting seats for dinner, but I think that if you arrived at 6 when the restaurant opened for dinner. We noticed that the longer you wait, the harder it was to get a seat. The food was good, the Tapeo Restaurant, the Brazilian and the Indian restaurant were outstanding. One of the things that we loved about this resort was all the options for outdoor eating, when we're paying to go to a tropical destination, we want to be outside enjoying the tropical breezes. The beach was spectacular, perfection, I don't know how else to say it. It was unbelievable, no coral shoes required. It was more a play in the waves kinda beach rather then a snorkel beach, and we were just fine with that. So, as much as we enjoyed ourselves at this wonderful resort, we found that there were some serious and not so serious issues. Firstly, the standard of customer service was dramatically lower then other resorts we have visited. There were some that were fine and were obviously meant to be in the business of customer service, but there were others that were deplorable. I don't know any of our servers names, no one attempted to connect with us until well into our 2nd week, once they realized that we were tippers. And yes, we tip always. They were not welcoming and quite frankly, we really felt like they resented English speaking people, they were rude, and would ignore us. I think that the management of that resort needs to address this issue very quickly, your staff is sabotaging your business. Then take a field trip to the Palladium in the Mayan Riveria to see what wonderful customer service really is. Second issue, Palapa Wars... people were reserving their palapa's in the evening, newcomers didn't have a chance. By our day 3 we went down at 5:30 am to see if any palapa's were available , and there were none. We noticed that people were respectful of reserved palapas even if it just had 2 towels over the chairs, but what was very frustrating was that often times people wouldn't show up. I think the resort needs to reign this in and start making some enforcable rules so that this kind of stuff doesnt happen. Utilize your security guys to keep track just like a parking attendent. If no one shows up after 2 hrs, then remove the towels and let someone else have the palapa. Those are 2 of the major issues, some minor issue suggestions though, is to open your beach bars at 7:30-8 am, and have coffee or coffee drinks available , along with a selection of pastries. We were at the beach very early every morning, and we brought our coffee from our room but a cappuccino would have been nice with a morning bun or pastry. The entertainment in general wasn't great, and what was going on was poorly advertised. I think having lobby music is great, but maybe keep the talent more consistant with a bigger repitoire . Other resorts in that area are hiring musical entertainment from other countries, and flying them in, regularly. I think this Palladium needs to step it up and keep up with your neighbours. Taking care of these things will push the desirablity of this resort over the top. Would we return? Yes, we would. More>

Stayed Here for 10 days April 13 to April 23, 2016. There were 2 families and 5 people in our group. Would NEVER consider booking my vacation at this resort again. Had to change rooms 3 times due to A/C breaking down, Shower not functional, mold on the ceiling, no bed for my daughter. Then they attempted to charge me an extra $15.00 USD/ day for upgrade. I had to get my West Jet Rep. involved as they did not speak enough English at the front desk. The resort needs major renovation work. The main pool is missing tiles in many places. Large areas of tiles are simply missing, you have to watch your step so you don't cut your feet. Dishes and glasses were dirty a lot of the time. (maybe the dishwashers need maintenance or need to be replaced), cutlery was always in short supply. Bring your own spoons!!! Leftover food on dishes that were supposed to be clean was an issue at every meal. You had to look for clean dishes or wipe them clean yourself. The bacteria from unclean dishes and silverware was sure to be a contributing cause of diarrhea and vomiting experienced by our group and many others we spoke to. Maids would forget to stock towels in our room and then housekeeping would resent guests calling them. They would refuse to provide towels and I had to go to the front desk manager. From then on they would knock on my door at about 10:30pm each night with towels. I guess it made them feel better to know they were waking up guests as payback for bothering them. Staff friendliness was hit or miss. Some staff were friendly, happy and social. Others ignored you or gave you one word answers ...even the wait staff. We felt like they resented us being there. Rarely could you find anyone that spoke English which I find understandable but they didn't even try to understand what we asked. On other resorts the staff that didn't speak English would do their best to understand what you wanted or needed or would lead you to someone who could interpret. This resort requires renovations and customer service training for the staff. I read reviews and they are mixed so I guess some us get lucky and others get the second rate treatment! Did our best to enjoy our vacation, didn't want to waste the san and sun....ocean was breathtaking :) More>

Lovely holiday!

Just returned from our 2-week stay here and had a lovely time! We were upgraded on arrival which was a lovely surprise! All the facilities are extremely clean and there's lots to do! The a la carte restaurants were great, especially the Japanese and Brazilian! The buffets and sports bar were also good on the whole, with excellent variety and something for everyone. We can't praise the entertainment team, especially Jhony Bravo and Spaghetti, highly enough - they work so hard and always put a smile on our faces. Bingo with Casanova was also a lot of fun and the evening shows in the Sunset Theatre were incredible - the dancers are very talented and even continued the show afterwards in the disco which was great. There are a few things which could be improved on (room service being the main one - we ordered twice and had missing dishes, slow service and wrong pizza toppings along with a brownie which was lovely the first time but completely different the second time) but overall we all had a great time and are possibly looking at coming to a different Grand Palladium hotel for our honeymoon next year! Another week in Paradise

Another week in Paradise has come to an end ... We had read some negative reviews the night before we left and we were getting a bit nervous - what if last year's experience was a 'one off'? I'm not sure what we were nervous about ... From the minute we arrived in the lobby our vacation and experience at Grand Palladium Bavaro was AWESOME!! Carolina even remembered us from last year! The staff are phenomenal - they simply can't do enough for you. We didn't get to see our favourite staff member, Daniel, until Day 3 - but it was worth the wait! That guy is fantastic. Our son got a great big 'welcome home hug' from him! He is such a hard worker and so genuine! One of the negative reviews we had read was about the 'language barrier' ... We never encountered that - we always found someone who spoke English and if not it gave us an opportunity to practice our limited EspaƱol - we are in a Spanish-speaking country after all. The food was delicious and plentiful. We did buffets for breakfast, the ocean front restaurant for lunch and a different themed restaurant each night for supper. We highly recommend the Japanese (show) and Brazilian restaurants. The staff at the restaurants were excellent for helping with our son's food allergies - the food allergy card program was a true life saver! The additional food and drink service huts on the beach are a nice addition for the afternoon munchies. The upgrade to the Sports Bar is also very nice - nice selection of salad bar type foods and hot finger foods. This year we attended several live shows - the talent was top notch. We especially recommend attending the Circus presentation. There are plenty of activities through out the day to keep you busy. The Black and White Club is a great place for the kids to hang out and meet other kids from around the world. The pools are well maintained and we always found a nice seat in the shade. Same at the beach - we always found a great spot to sit and relax after swimming in the beautiful turquoise water - the waves are awesome! Until next year, Bavaro, until next year ... More>

In the main, an excellent holiday

The room, location, pool, beach and waiters (especially Victor) were all brilliant. The entertainment team were the best I have ever experienced. A special mention to Jonny Bravo, Spaghetti, Banana and Casanova, who all went the extra mile to ensure our stay was as enjoyable as possible. The adults pool open until midnight, the sports bar offering 24 hour food and drinks, and the included room service were all nice touches we weren't expecting. There are, however, some slight negatives about this hotel, but none were significant enough for me to lower the rating to 4: - The cleaners were good when they did their job, but they did miss our room a few days which was frustrating. - The evening shows (performed by a different entertainment team) lacked variation and got quite boring towards the end of the holiday. The terrible miming of songs is pointless, and the dancers were out of time and looked completely uninterested in what they were doing. It'd be far better with a bit of variety, a singer or magician perhaps? - The waiting time in the restaurants was excessive, so we didn't bother for most of the holiday. More>
