Love the Grand Naniloa

We stayed at this hotel 7 years ago when it was the Naniloa Hotel. We were amazed by the improvements that have been made since the Hilton acquired this property. Everything has been upgraded and modernized, from the lobby to the guest rooms. They added a fitness room with all new equipment (including 2 spin cycles), a restaurant and bar and a modern convenience store. We had an ocean view room with a balcony with a gorgeous view of Hilo across the bay. We stayed while the lava and Mount Kiluea was active, but never felt unsafe (we could not smell the sulfer dioxide nor were affected by the ash fallout - due to the trade winds blowing toward the Southeast). We were sensitive to the fact that many people who were force to evacuate were staying at the Naniloa. We highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again on our next visit!

Not a resort

I am a diamond member with Hilton and have stayed at nearly 300 Hilton properties worldwide. This is by far the worst hotel that I have stayed at . The property is dingy and is located in a depressed area. There is a derelict hotel next door. It felt more like a discount hotel on the gulf coast that a resort in Hawaii.

Beautiful, clean room

We had a room on 12 floor, it was a really lovely room. Reception staff were very helpful, as we arrived with no booking. We had a meal in the restaurant, but unfortunately the food wasn't too good, I had macadamia nut crusted calamari, which had no nut crust and was terribly over cooked, even burnt in places.

Great location, excellent service

We stayed at this hotel during part of our honeymoon on the island. The front desk staff were polite and helpful and they gave us free warm cookies at check in! The room was newly renovated, just wished their air conditioner was more controllable with the thermostat cuz it had to be either on or off, no in between. location was great. Just wished the weather cooperated a bit for us to enjoy the pool (it was rainy and super windy during our stay).

Poorly trained and ill-informed front desk staff

Air conditioning was not working in our room and engineering staff could not get it repaired. Hotel engineer told us repairs would be done the next day. After a miserably hot night, repairs commenced the next morning. We left the hotel for the day but when we returned in mid-afternoon, the a/c was still not repaired. There was no notification from the front desk and we had to ask that we be moved to another room. Front desk said they would get back to us within 30 minutes but it actually took almost two hours until we were assigned another room and were able to move. I asked for FedEx pick-up service and were assured that FedEx picked up everyday around 10:00 a.m. I left a package to be picked up and later received a phone call advising me that it was UPS that picked up. If I wanted FedEx, I had to make arrrangements on my own. Some service!!
