Great Pool, Hotel Needs Upgrading

I've been to many Caribbean all-inclusive resorts, always 5-star rated or higher. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give this a 5. The pool area is the best part. It's beautiful, large, well kept, very clean, with lovely grounds and plantings. We visited for a week in January and although it was high season, we were always able to find lounge chairs in sun or shade. The beach areas are OK, but not up to the level I've seen elsewhere. There's simply not an expansive beachfront, and it's quite rocky. The resort itself is HUGE, one of if not the largest on the island. The building and rooms can definitely use upgrading, they are showing their age. Carpeting in the hallways was very dirty, tiles in our room and bath were clean but chipped/cracked, it all looked very dated. Our room opened to a large patio, but there was just a very cheap plastic table and plastic chairs, no lounges (they were not clean). The staff is nice but we almost never were asked if we wanted a drink while at the pool, we had to go to the bar ourselves. Another big issue was the Wi-Fi. Although they advertise it being free, it is only free in the lobby and VERY slow. You really have to upgrade to use it, which cost $9/week per device. BUT, we could only get 2 devices for that rate. When we tried adding another, the price jumped to $60/week. We were told that shouldn't happen, and to call the "Help Desk" which we tried to do, but no one ever answered the phone. Overall the food was sub-par. The buffet was not great, it was in a huge room that had a very antiseptic smell. We ate there as infrequently as possible. The restaurants were better, but again not great. And we were allowed to make reservations at restaurants 3 out of our 6 nights. On the other nights, we had to wait for an available table. Even the drinks were sub-par, watery and weak. We were shocked when we ordered a banana daiquiri and told they were "out of bananas"! During our 7 day stay, they only had bananas at the pool bar 2 of the days! The main patio, off the reception/lobby, was our favorite area. They had coffee and tea and pastries available there in the morning, and cookies at tea time. At night they had live music. The bar service there was also good.

Outside of the resort was beautiful, rooms and hallways could use some better cleaning and updating. Most staff was friendly.

The hotel is beautiful, but could use some updating. The hallways are dark and hot.....in the 6 days we were there no one ever vacuumed the carpets. They were very dirty. Our room had a significant leak from the shower of the room above which when we called, was taken care of quickly. Staff were very friendly and willing to accommodate anything you needed. Food was ok for buffet food. Loved the afternoon lunch by the ocean with the delicious Jerk chicken. Beaches were kept clean and were perfect for a relaxing day. Loved the ease of flights, check-in and the whole Apple Vacation process. We will definitely use Apple for our future vacations.

There was an issue the fist 2 days of stay with room accommodations but the staff worked really well. Huge disappointment that Apple Vacations booked a room request but did NOT disclose that the request is based on room availability. This is key information when booking a specific room, expecting that room type & upon arrival NOT receiving.

We had a wonderful week at the Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica. Even with the hotel being at full capacity, it never felt over crowded, we always found a place to relax and the services/staff were outstanding. The property itself was gorgeous and well taken care of. We could not have been happier with this choice and already referred 2 families that booked future trips here.

We had 3 rooms reserved for 7 people. Only 1 room had 2 beds when we had requested all rooms to have 2 beds (all girls traveling). One room got changed after 2 nights, the other did not. The room with 2 beds had NO A/C! After much wasted time complaining- that room got changed at 6pm on our last night. Three people with ONE bed.

Eastern airlines was late, but after finding out they were actually dynamic international airways who has one of the worst reviews for tardiness online it didn't come as a shock, honestly I was just glad they showed up. The hotel was horrible! Within 10 minutes at the hotel the bellhop attempted to extort me for money saying he would, "lose our bags" if I didn't tip him. The internal transfer service was terrible and he refused to do his job leaving my wife and I on our own to find our room. The room was dirty with hair all over the bathroom after we complained the room was maintained at a reasonable level. For those that have made it this far into this review: BEWARE the staff is extremely rude and racist! Expect to be put at the back of the line at bars and restaurants if you are white. We only had one staff smile at us. The rest would walk right through you if you got in their way! They wouldn't move or care they just ran into a guest. Also if you are a family that isn't interested in drugs stay away from this hotel! Weed, cocaine and heroin were everywhere! The hotel even had a special area near the beach for drug dealers to stand! Not family friendly at all. On our trip back Eastern airways was 6 hours late! A fine ending to a disappointing trip! Will never go back or recommend to others. Spend your money elsewhere!

We stayed here last year and had a few issues but not bad enough that we did not want to go back. The Grounds are beautiful, the hotel needs some TLC but it is still very nice. The reason we won't be back is simple. Our family tried to contact us and could not reach us. they were hung up on three times. To me this is unacceptable. The WiFi didn't work well, they need a stronger signal for so many users. It kept saying it was not available.

I’ve never heard “no I can’t help you” more at an all inclucive resort than I did at this hotel. It was either “go talk to this person” or “I can’t do that”. Very poor customer service. I would not recommend to anyone to visit. Somewhat confused how the reviews are as high as they are. I travelled with a group and we booked many hotels and everyone had a poor customer experience. Definitely avoid if you can

We have only been here for a few hours. Upon arrival, several customers were upset and were voicing their concerns with staff. To be fair, I don't know the specifics of their complaints, so I didn't take it too seriously. We thought that our process would be rather smooth to check in, considering that we had made reservations way ahead of time. We had the printouts from home and the confirmation via phone. But to my surprise, after my interaction with a gentleman named Albert, the front office manager, I knew that this would not be a smooth process. Here is what he shared.... 1. Albert informed me that he was upgrading my room to a luxury room free of charge. I thought this was odd considering that the current room that we booked was a luxury room. After looking at my information, he realized that he made an error. 2. Albert informed me that my room would NOT have two beds, total opposite of what was indicated on my confirmation and receipt, but that there would be a possible cot for me to sleep on. This is in addition to the one bed that will be provided in the room. There are a few problems with that. There is two of us on this trip and one of us has to get a cot. The both of us being in one bed is not an option. Sidenote, neither one of us sleeps on a cot regularly. So it would make sense that we didn't request a bed with a cot. During this process, and this part was laughable at best, Albert offered us a room with two beds in the section of the resort that is being upgraded. Specifically, it would be a downgrade to what we currently purchased. And by downgrade, we would no longer have the free Wifi option and the bar would not be stacked daily (we are still waiting on our courtesy bottle but thankfully, a trip to the duty free store at the airport saved the day). It was clear that Albert has been on his job for quite some time because of his incessant attempt at trying to get me to understand that this was no fault of the resort. However, I work in sales and I knew exactly what he was trying to do. 3. We were further given the run around. At this time, Albert indicated that even though I booked the reservation, there was no guarantee that bedding would be provided based on the demands of the hotel residents. When I asked if I could see this policy, because it wasn't anywhere on my forms, he was unable to produce it to me. I indicated that I wanted to speak with a manager. It's since been two hours but Albert swears that the manager was present, just unavailable. My guess is that there was no manager as I am still waiting on that call. 4. After informing the front desk that I would be filing a complaint as the accommodations that I paid for were downgraded, there was another catch. I was given another form to fill out, in which Albert said that he would truly attempt to find a 2 bedroom accommodation tomorrow (let's be honest, what are the odds?). He stressed the importance of this paper being signed so that he could get this process in motion. But the form that he gave me had a fine print area that he neglected to share which read that if me and my guest DO sign the paper, we would waive any complaints that we have against the resort. So, mistake #4, was mistaking me and my guest as less intelligent to not even read the whole document. That was nothing but a mere attempt at covering their mistakes with this entire process. 5. So at this point, my intelligence has been insulted, and my lodging accommodations have been downgraded. When I asked for a partial refund, because I am here for 4 nights and being near 6ft with a cot is not even close to a good time, he informed me that it wouldn't be coming from the hotel. This situation is still ongoing and we've been reduced to having the cot. Should matters get resolved, I am more than willing to change my review. However, we are currently browsing neighboring resorts.

We stayed in the gran bahia resort during the x-mas holidays. Weather was perfect, our room was very spacious and clean. We were impressed by all the effort that was done by the hotel staff to create An x-mas spirit: gospel songs, x-mas parade, ICE sculptures, grand buffet, ... WOW. Perfect hotel to spend the holidays with your family.

We've been to all inclusives before, and we expected something average, but everything was just outstanding! It is luxury in every way. The room we had was spacious with a large balcony. We like a quiet holiday, do lots of reading, and are in bed early, and our room overlooked a very quiet part of the hotel. The food was fantastic, and we ended up eating in the Jasmine buffet every night because of the amazing variety of delicious food. We especially loved the attention the waiters and waitresses gave us, feeling special every time we went there, and they were very willing to share information on the Jamaican culture. We couldn't believe how friendly everyone was, and how much fun they made our visit. We got to know in the day shift Yolanda at the front who always seated us where we wanted to be, Esther, who was a comedian, Nashique who was very elegant, friendly, and reminded us of a supermodel, and in the evening, Christina who made us feel that we were the most special guests in the hotel. One evening we went to the Mikado the a la carte restaurant, and were very well looked after by a waiter named Roy. We found spots that were protected from the sun and were quite private, and were always amazed by how beautiful the grounds were landscaped and maintained. We also loved the fact that the ocean water was very warm, one of the warmest places we've been, so we spent quite a bit of time in it. Overall, a spectacular week long holiday, and we look forward to going back there again.

Another great group holiday, would return in a heartbeat!

We travelled in a group of 8, 4 couples (no kids). We used Air Canada Vacations, stayed Feb 2 - 9. The property is stunning (we were on Grand side) and having been there now are quite surprised by all the bad reviews on here. The carpet IS dirty in the hallway by elevator...did it affect our holiday in any way?? LOL...no! That was truly the only thing we saw that was in disrepair. There are always staff working on the grounds and around the hotel, painting, cleaning, fixing, polishing, shining etc..they never stop. We hired a private transfer from the airport and so we were there at least an hour and a half ahead of everyone else from our plane (do let the Air Can rep at the airport know you will not be on the bus if you are going to do this). We were greeted by friendly bellmen and with a rum punch..check in was easy in a separate room away from the front desk. I had emailed the hotel prior to arriving for room requests and dinner reservations...I never ever rec'd any reply to this email. We were however given rooms on an upper floor as requested, all of us in building 13 on 6th floor. Immediately after check in we made our a la carte reservations and had no trouble getting tables for 8 people at Garden Grill, Dolce Vida and Mikado..although the only time for the Japanese for this many people together was 9:15..kinda late but we went anyhow. We enjoyed all the a la cartes food and service fantastic! There were no issues with any of our rooms, everything worked as it should. One day the maid forgot to leave us any bath towels, I called the front desk and bath towels were delivered to our room in less than 5 minutes. The food at the buffet and the a la cartes was fantastic and I'm sure we all put on a few pounds this week from the great food and drink! We never encountered any service issues, we always had our coffee or drinks served quickly at meal time, no complaints about service at this hotel at all. We found the staff to be quite friendly. You get what you give..be friendly with the staff and treat them with respect and you will get the same in return! We did not find the 'priviledge' club sales people to be relentless LOL..we were approached a couple times during the week..we said no thanks and kept on walking..no problems at all! We mainly sat down by the far beach (just before the nude beach) this seems to be the nicest area of beach, there is a bar and bathrooms down there and decent snorkelling right off the beach! We spent a little time by the pool sometimes in the late afternoon before calling it a day..but it is busy and loud! Not really our thing, much prefer the beach and the sound of the waves to the cranked music and someone talking on the mic non stop..but if you are more of a party person, this area is perfect for you! We stayed at the resort all but one day, we hired our same guy that picked us up at the airport (see separate review under Utons Private Tours..we've used him for years!) to take us off resort to see some real local stuff..off the beaten path. We did a crazy drive up thru the mountains to Nine Mile ($25 per person to get in)...holy cow those roads! But worth the trip and great to see if you are at all a Bob Marley fan! Then we went to Ocho Rios for some shopping, great day out! The 'village' is handy for shopping but it seems that pretty much all of the shops here are 'foreign owned'..we did more of our shopping on Ocho Rios at the market and away from the actual stores where we could support the locals and not the foreign business owners. We had a fantastic time here and would return in a heartbeat! Complaints if I really had to find some..the beaches are truly not the best and it's quite a walk to get to the best area of the beach...if you've been to Punta Cana or Cuba and are expecting beaches like that you will be disappointed. That being said it's still a beach..even if it's small, it did the job! Suggestion..put a handrail down the center of the big stairs from the lobby terrace down to the pool..we saw quite a few people being very very careful going down these stairs, they were slippery if at all damp. Tips..take lots of US $1s for tipping and an insulated cup (Bubba if you are Canadian) and straws if you think you need them, higher floor rooms have better ocean view. This was personally my 4th time to Jamaica, but for some in our group it was the first. We all had a fantastic time and would certainly recommend this hotel!
