Amazing surroundings but poor hotel

I agree with person who gave 1 star on 31/3. The empty apartment buildings along the drive in indicated what to expect of the accommodation. The location is superb and is clearly their only usp. The rooms are extremely dated & shabby with awful furniture & extremely noisy air con, which can’t have on at night to try to sleep through. Dinner wasn’t buffet and only had a choice of about 8 mains, none vegetarian. I had sea bass which when it eventually arrived the veg was cold. There were only about 7 occupied tables & 3 waiters but we still waited ages and had to ask for drinks & for dessert- which I left as didn’t taste fresh ( cheese cake ). Very disappointed. The who hotel seems like it is being run on low budget which clearly isn’t working. There doesn’t appear to be any specific management either so it is just going to ruin. Even at this time in season it should have many more guests. Such a shame as run efficiently with guests in mind it could be a gold mine with such amazing surrounding beauty. Would recommend visiting on a day trip but not as hotel stay.

Beautiful resort - some quirks

Large resort-style property with very spacious grounds, excellent accommodation, grand public spaces and a lovely, large pool. Service is friendly, although sometimes slow, notably in the Monkey Bar. The food is buffet style for all meals and is okay, but by no means gourmet or to write home about. For breakfast, the orange juice is from concentrate or frozen. Oranges grow all around, so why not use them freshly squeezed? In hotels in the tropics I automatically deduct one star for this travesty. The free in room internet is reliable and excellent. There are silly quirks, though. In hotels one normally finds an information sheet or booklet telling you about restaurant hours, pool opening hours, internet, telephone, exercise room. Check in and out times, laundry etc. Here NO INFORMATION at all was provided. You just had to ask the front desk. Nothing was volunteered. We didn’t discover the exercise room until the last day. We had to ask the front desk about laundry. They said they would send a bag and a list, but they didn’t. The canal side restaurant (see separate review) was not open on Saturday. Nobody told us until we got there. I think the hotel is not very well managed, which is a shame for such a glorious facility. Another issue is that there is no toilet anywhere near the pool, which must create a health hazard. We had read bad reviews of bird guides provided by the hotel, but our guide for a four hour tour around the property was Jacobus, who was absolutely exceptionally good and knowledgeable. I would recommend this resort, but it needs some rough edges smoothed out and, in particular, it needs a much more classy restaurant. Four stars less one for the orange juice.

Very good experience overall. The grounds have magnificent views. All areas were very clean. The buffet menú was varied. The assistant manager was very helpful and any complaints were listened to and solved.

We loved our room on the 7th floor with the hammock on the balcony watching the sun rise and the moon rise. The room was very comfortable and clean. On the included "safari ride" we saw a mother sloth with a baby, a caiman and many capybaras; we also heard the howler monkeys and saw many birds. After fishing on Lake Gatun, the resort cooked our peacock bass; it was delicious. Wonderful side trips included going to an Embera village and the Panama Canal. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Many of the staff do not speak English; when our "Spanglish" was not successful, Lorababel was exceptionally helpful several times. Stay here and immerse yourself in the Soberania National Park rain forest.
