Beware the Gamboa Rainforest Resort!

Before I get to the part of having money stolen out of my room, let me report that this resort facility has seen better days, many years ago. It smells of mold and they pump frigid air into the rooms: there are no adjustments possible on the thermostat! Mini-fridge didn't work. The staff is pretty indifferent and speak little English even though most of their guests don't speak Spanish. Rooms come with no printed info on tours, restaurant hours, etc. Mediocre buffet offerings in the restaurant. And it can cost almost $200 a night, and that doesn't even include breakfast! I was out of the facility on a nighttime tour of the property to spot nocturnal animals when, most likely, someone entered my room and stole my cash, which I did not discover until the next morning. Security later informed me that, based on the electronic key card record of entrances and exits to and from my room, that no one (but me) had come and gone. They also told me that, of course, I should have used the room safe! The only good things about this isolated property are the extensive pool, the beautiful views from the hotel terrace, and the mini-tours (all of which one must pay for): I enjoyed the aerial tram and the Lake Gatun excursions. Based on my unfortunate experience, however, whenever a guest leaves the facility they should be concerned about who might be in their room rummaging around.

This was better than expected...first the good stuff. The resort is located beside the lake, has a fantastic pool & bar. The restaurant serves good to very good buffet style meals the omelette chef is spot on. The rooms were big and roomy, air conditioned and decent showers. The many tours offered were great..saw a ton of wildlife, including sloths, howler monkeys, white face monkeys, camains, toucans, macaws and iguanas. The staff were helpful but not all were fluent in english but with my little knowledge of spanish we got a long okay...but be prepared that not all the staff speak english. Also the staff that work the rooms were slower than what we normally expect...but the rooms were clean and done right when they were done... I expect I will be back...theres much yet to see

Stayed for a couple of nights. Booking in was very slow. Anything that needs organisation is pretty bad. This is a shame because the hotel and facilities are fantastic. Our room was huge with a balcony with stunning views. The minibar was a great help so we could cool drinks and most importantly, chocolate. Overall a great place to stay and visit the sloth sanctuary.

Great view, needs improvements

We had high hopes for our one night stay and were disappointed and couldn’t wait for next hotel. It was plenty long enough to enjoy the excursions offered very close by. The pool is huge and waterfall very cool. However it has a rather far walk past a large worn patio full of stairs, not recommended for the elderly or lazy. And bring band-aids as the nurse station looked high and low for one for my son with no success. The bar there is not well tended, although we felt the whole place just seemed extremely understaffed. There were limited food option/times so plan ahead once you get there, especially if you have scheduled tours and allow for long wait times. The room was large but very old floors and tile. Cool loft for kids and nice balcony with hammock. The views and sunrise were beautiful and serene. The tour guides were nice and we enjoyed a few tours. The butterfly, orchids, and frog exhibits were bare and a waste of time. But go if you’re from a big city and never see greenery. Transportation to and from hote is hard to find cheap. Use Luis Arce for safe, reliable shuttle all around Panama City areas! for best prices. We stayed at three hotels around the city and this one needs the most improvements. Beautiful when new and fully staffed, I bet.

A fantastic location

Loved the Hotel and it's location. Took the night tour and saw plenty of wildlife. The Sloth sanctuary is amazing and they do such a fantastic job there and the staff very clearly love what they do. Well done everyone. The room was okay but a little bit tired and dated, but that did not detract from our enjoyment of the place and all that it had to offer. We were all inclusive and the food and drinks were great with a wide and varied selection. The pool was great for swimming in and warm. We did not manage to see any animals on the air tram tour, but one has to accept that they are not there for our entertainment and will do their own thing! Still great anyway. The tiny frogs are incredible, as was the butterfly tent. A must visit if in Panama
