Back from our most recent visit to Esmeralda Resort since Hurricane Irma.
Scott S, Saint Louis Park, Minnesota

We just returned back home from our 6th stay at Esmeralda Resort. This was our first return visit since Hurricane Irma devastated the island. Both physically and visually, Esmeralda looks very well considering what it suffered in the way of storm damage. During my walks around the property, there were only two villas that I noticed which had blue tarps on sections of the roof, boarded up windows/patio doors and which were obviously unoccupied. These were villas 46 and 52. All of the remaining villas had new roofs, new exterior painting and in the case of our room, located in villa 47, new entrance and patio doors and roll down storm shutters. Much work was put in to restoring the property to as close to how it was before Irma and it clearly shows. The interior of our room contained some new furnishings and fixtures, as well as having been painted. We noticed a new and larger size room safe that was located on a shelf inside of the main closet, right at eye level, which made it easy to access. Everything else, from the large walk-in shower with the Hansgrohe rainshower head, the air conditioning unit, the bedding and extra pillows was familiar and comfortable. There was a new, large Samsung flat screen TV along with a vastly improved lineup of satellite TV channels, which numbered in the dozens. The WiFi service in our room and on the patio was pretty good, overall, for the few times we wanted to access information about a local restaurant or make reservations for an island excursion. We found the time period from roughly 6-9 PM to be the most difficult in connecting to their WiFi network. As far as the look of the grounds around the property, the change is quite noticeable. The previous setting, which was more tropical in feel with tall, mature palms and dense shrubbery, is now much more open and panoramic. Many of the palm trees and taller shrubs are gone, replaced with new plantings of trees and shrubbery which will take quite some number of years to achieve the former look and feel. Everything is clean and tidy with work crews observed raking, trimming and cleaning during the period of our week's stay. The continental breakfast at Astrolabe is just as perfect as it has been already for all of the years we've been staying at the resort. I cannot think of anything that has changed about it. The same can be said for dining there in the evenings. The excellent service, excellent food and the same wonderful, quiet and relaxing atmosphere. During our stay, Louane and Mildred, from the reception staff handled the few questions that we had and also got me untangled in how to make phone calls to the Dutch side from the room telephone (I forgot that to call from one side of the island to the other is an international phone call). Both ladies were very friendly and very accommodating, no matter the question asked or the request made. Since they knew we had been guests many times before the hurricane, they were curious and asked us about how things compared before the storm versus now. Eliu, another reception employee that we were familiar with from past stays was off during this period to help take care of his newborn infant. Esmeralda guests are given use of chairs and umbrellas over at Kakao Beach. It is no further than a 2-3 minute walk from where the former Coco Beach bar/restaurant stood. The anticipated completion date for the rebuilt Coco Beach bar/restaurant is later this summer. From the amount of other people seen at breakfast and dinner, our daily walks through the property into the adjoining neighborhoods and coming/going from the resort in our rental car, it did seem quieter and as though fewer people were staying at Esmeralda during our week there. I hope that people are not choosing to stay away because they feel the beach is not as good or that Coco Beach bar/restaurant is not yet rebuilt and open or that the landscaping and grounds are not as lush, tropical and secluded as before. Irma caused significant changes to the area, but from all of what I was able to see while out exploring, everything that has returned or which is in the process of returning, is coming back better and bigger than what existed before!

A great vacation at a great place

We had a great 2-week stay at Esmeralda. As others have noted, the facility consists of a series of buildings across the property, each of which has 4 suites in a townhouse-style layout, and each building has its own private swimming pool. The room we were in was large and comfortable, with a kitchenette area that has a kettle, microwave, sink and mini-fridge. The village area is a 7-minute walk by road (we timed it), and includes a good grocery store, so we bought lunch stuff there and typically (but not always!) made lunch in the room. Esmeralda's beach area is not operational, but their guests have chaise longue/umbrella privileges at the beach facility next door - it shows up as Waikiki on Google Maps, but is now called Kakao Beach - so the walk from room to beach has gone from 2-3 minutes to 3-4 minutes. Kakao Beach is also a great place for lunch - the hamburger is handmade, cooked to order and delicious, and they have Heineken on draught. The tennis courts have not yet been repaired, which was certainly no big deal to us. The restaurant (l'Astrolabe) serves a perfectly fine continental breakfast, with additional options available at extra cost - quite reasonable prices by Caribbean standards. For dinner, it is certainly not low-price, but it is extraordinarily good. And the Orient Village restaurants - we ate at all 6 in the "courtyard" area, and found all of them to be quite good - are that 7-minute walk away. Finally, all of the staff we dealt with were very friendly, very helpful - at all levels. We are both self-employed, so internet connectivity is important to us (we're never truly "away on vacation"). We had one problem with wi-fi connectivity, and as soon as I reported it there was a full-court press to resolve it. Which happened. So, a great stay at a great place. The French style of Saint-Martin is a big plus - especially the food! This turned out to be a great time to visit Orient Bay, perhaps for the wrong reasons. You aren't confronted with unrepaired hurricane damage, but you don't have to look hard to see it.don't have to look hard to find it. A number of hotels and retail spaces are not open. But we found that the beach facilities were never crowded, and we never had trouble getting a table at a restaurant. In all the businesses we dealt with, people were working hard - we never saw anyone working on "island time". For us, it was a great vacation. Pure and simple.

We stayed here for 2 weeks January 2-16. Resort looks fabulous! All of their hard work after Hurricane Irma has paid off. Our room was immaculate, housekeeping does a fabulous job! The landscaping crew has well maintained all of the property. So happy to hear that CoCo beach will be rebuilt! The staff are amazing!! We were welcomed back by Chris, David & Eli, who are always so pleasant and helpful! Breakfast at L’Astrolabe is always so fresh and delicious as well as fantastic dinners!!! Five star dining! Thanks to all at Esmeralda for a fabulous vacation!! We will be back!

Still recovering from Hurricane Irma

Esmeralda is still a great place to stay on St. Martin. The rooms are clean, the service is good, the location is unbeatable. We have stayed here many times, and were concerned about how well they had recovered following Hurricane Irma in Sep 2017. Overall, they have come back quite nicely, with most things restored to the level of quality they maintained previously. It is still a safe, clean, gorgeous location. We were pleased to find they now provide complimentary wi-fi throughout the resort. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Luanne was outstandingly helpful. When we tried to cook some pasta in our microwave, we discovered the kitchenette did not have a larger bowl. When she could not locate a bowl on site, she drove over to her own apartment and let us borrow one of her personal bowls. Unbelievable! Thank you! The on site restaurant, Astrolabe, is up and running nicely. We found the complimentary breakfast was even a bit better than what they did before -- includes coffee, tea, juice of your choice, fruit cup with great variety, and a basket of assorted fresh baked French breads and pastries. There are a few things that they still need to work on. We had the electric breakers go out on us once. The water was shut off for about 30 minutes one afternoon. The slider to the patio locked on the normal (left) side, but the right side panel could be slid open and could not be properly locked. The kitchenette was not stocked with quite as many dishes as previously. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was that the Coco Beach restaurant was completely gone. Just the bare traces of the foundation are left -- everything else was completely washed away in the hurricane. It was astonishing to walk down the brick pathway to find ... nothing. It was surreal to remember where the restaurant had been, only to find an empty space of sand and a bit of debris. The front desk manager indicated they still hope that it will be rebuilt, but it will obviously be quite a wait. In the mean time, Esmeralda has an agreement with the adjacent beach bar so that guests can use the chairs and umbrellas there. It is right next door and a very easy walk.

Almost there!

The hotel is clean, the staff lovely and the food excellent. It’s close to the beach and though they took a hit from Irma, the beach is in good shape. It was hard not to notice all of the feral cats. Many were starving, so not unlike other folks who’ve stayed there before, I fed them. I am hoping the hotel can find someone from the island to trap and neuter them before their numbers triple. Also being a guest and having a kitten cry at your door for food broke my heart. So, if you’re an animal lover please bring some cat food. I’m reaching out to several local orgs to enlist their help.
