This was our 3rd holiday to Dreams Resort & Spa, La Romana and I have again reviewed this hotel honestly and based it upon my own opinions.
All staff at DLR are friendly, helpful and fun. If it were not for these people this resort would not be as amazing as it is. Cleaners, gardeners, porters, reception staff, concierge, bar staff & entertainment team all go out of their way to ensure you have the best holiday ever, they just can’t do enough for you, and they are honestly the nicest people I've ever met on a holiday anywhere!
Special mentions must go to Dreams entertainment team members Eddy Murphy, Pablo Picasso, Super Joe, Christian (the Italian guy) & Beautiful Bella. Barracuda bar staff Sweet Mama & Evelyn & Marcos (old guy) the Gardener/Pool attendant.
We booked the same room type as previous years ‘Deluxe Garden View’ in Block 5. This year we had a ground floor room close to all facilities. We had a ‘super king’ size bed in the room and they brought in an addition double bed for our 15 year old daughter (NOT a put you up style bed) which still left plenty of space in the room. The rooms have plenty of storage, large wardrobe and drawers, I would suggest taking a few hangers if you can, there was only a dozen in the wardrobe, although you can get more, you only need to ask. The bathrooms are spacious with a huge walk in shower (no bath) and all the usual refinements (shower gel, shampoo, soap etc) The Hairdryer was powerful so no need to take your own. The rooms have a large flat screen TV with separate DVD Player (warning will only play US region DVDS), Iron & Ironing Board, Radio Alarm Clock with iPod docking facility, FREE Safety Deposit box and even an umbrella should it rain!
The Restaurants are great, with so much on offer that even the fussiest of eaters or those with special diets would find something to eat.
The World Cafe (main restaurant) serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and caters for all tastes, with themed nights through the week. There’s a special section dedicated to children.
There are 6 other restaurants to choose:
Seaside Grill for steaks etc. (also open for lunch), Bordeaux for French cuisine, Portofino for Italian food, Olio for Mediterranean options, Himitsu for Asian variations and Oceana for Seafood. There is a snack bar on the beach offering Burgers, Hotdogs, salads etc. and a Pizza bar by the main pool (highly recommended).
The French & Italian Restaurants are very busy between 7.30pm – 9pm and you may have to wait a while for a table, try to get out earlier rather than later if you don’t like to eat too late, There is a dress code at these 2 restaurants, men have to wear long trousers.
Great place to chill out in the late afternoon or after dinner. They serve coffee, muffins, cakes, cookies, sandwiches etc.
During the day you can take part in as little or as much as you like, Aqua Aerobics, Water polo, Volleyball, Salsa/Merengue Classes, Rum Tasting, Spanish Lessons and much more. If you participate in activities you are awarded ‘Funny Money’ which you can use during the ‘Auction Nights’ to bid for merchandise from the resort. Entertainment starts from 7.30pm and the shows/concerts take place from 9.30pm. Shows not to miss are The Magic Show, Night of the Stars and the Circus Night, shows are either in the Convention Centre or outside by the main pool. The lobby bar is great to hang out in during the evening, they usually have a musician playing quietly in the background.
Core Zone & Explorers Club:
Explorers club is for small children, and is like any other Kids Holiday Club abroad, with various activities throughout the day and is open from 9.30am to 10.30pm. The Core Zone has activities including Pool/Snooker, Games consoles, Satellite TV, Foosball, basketball and much more. Although this area is meant for older children/teens, during our stay both younger children and adults where using this facility.
There are a couple of shops in the resort offering the usual souvenirs and basic items like shampoo, sun lotions, over the counter medicines etc. There’s a clothing store, a Jeweler, and a cigar shop. There is an ATM which issues Dominican Pesos, which you can then exchange for US Dollars.
We didn’t use the Spa, but I heard that the treatments on offer where of a good standard and reasonably charged for. I have a copy of the Spa Brochure, so if you want any info & Prices please just ask.
Desires Nightclub & Casino:
Open from 10pm – 2am. Mostly used after the evening shows by the night owls, entertainment team are there to ensure you have the best time.
Miscellaneous Info/Top Tips:
a. Tours/Excursions - There are a wide variety to choose from available through
your tour operator or via the booth on the beach.
b. Scuba diving trial sessions are available in the main pool
c. Beach towels are available to collect and exchange at the beach booth.
d. Waitress service is available by the pool and also in the lobby bar, there is no
need to ‘tip’ every time, this seems to be an American trait, but is really not necessary, nor do the staff expect it. It is more than adequate to tip at the end of the holiday to those you feel deserve it, we have always done this.
e. The hotel has a Photographer on site, who you can book for photoshoots, there is no pressure to have these taken or even to buy.
f. Make sure you try the daily alcoholic/non alcoholic cocktails (for kids) they are very yummy!! Miami Vice, Dirty Banana, Passion Wow and Mango Tango to name a few.
g. We never had a problem with sunbeds, so no need to get up at silly o’clock to bag the best beds, there are more than enough to go around. Beach Cabana’s are available at $100 per day for that special occasion.
h. WIFI is free to all guests throughout the resort, however it can be a bit hit and miss in some areas.
i. There is a 24hr doctor on site, if you should need it, hopefully not, and we never have.
j. Preferred club – if you want peace and quiet with no kids then this is for you, however if not I wouldn’t waste your money on it, you don’t get enough benefits to warrant the cost.
I would highly recommend this resort to all who want to have an amazing time & to make memories that will last a lifetime! We are DEFINATELY going back!
My husband and 2 boys (9 and 10 yo) stayed in Dreams La Romana for 2 weeks. I read a lot of reviews on TripAdvisor before our visit and I feel like the reviews don't completely represent the hotel. We travel with our kids every year and are not picky at all. We always find foods that we like to eat and don't stress over little things. Having said that, I must say that this hotel REALLY NEEDS TO RENOVATE THEIR ROOMS. Please SEE PICTURES ATTACHED to support my review.
They have a MAJOR issue with BLACK MOLD IN THE ROOMS. There was black mold EVERYWHERE! Bathroom has NO VENTILATION. In the bathroom, there is mold on the ceiling, some mold spots on the wall tile, and on the floor. The stainless steel fixtures all have rust spots. In the room, the AC unit has mold all around it on the outside. I am scared to think of how it looks on the inside. The balcony door curtain has black mold on it. The room itself looks very run down. The wooden drawers are hard to pull out and they get stuck when you try to close them. Even with the AC on all day, the room feels musty and humid. Everything in the room and bathroom is outdated, old and run down. I did not read this in any of the reviews on this site. If I had, I would not have come to this resort.
The main buffet (The World Cafe) service was inconsistent every time. Sometimes the waiters would ask you if you needed water and coffee during breakfast pretty fast. Other times you could sit and wait for 15 minutes and noone would come to you or you would ask for coffee and water and it would take them 10 minutes to bring it. At some point, we were almost done with breakfast and still no coffee. Service at the specialty restaurants was a bit better however I don't understand how they can bring your next course without cleaning your dirty dish first. Most of the waiters did this. You finish your appetizer and the waiter brings your soup or main course and then struggles with finding a place to put it on the table instead of clearing the dirty dishes of the table first!!!
AWESOME! Possibly the best beach we have ever been to. No rocks, no waives, beautiful water. There is a reef you can snorkel to right off the beach (on the right side of the black bridge). Would be better if they had more palapas for shade. People still reserve palapas very early every morning even though the hotel claims they remove the towels from the beach beds (which I've never seen happen).
We are not pool people, so no comments. They look beautiful though and there are 2 pools for everyone and 2 more pools for preferred adults and preferred family only.
Very good. They work very hard and are always around on the beach, pool, and evening. Saw a few shows in the evening which were pretty good.
Service at the beach bar:
They don't notice you for a LONG time. No smiles either. Look very overworked.
Main buffet (The World Cafe) - average. For breakfast, we always found something that we liked but since the food is pretty much the same there everyday for breakfast, you quickly get tired of it. Main buffet lunches and dinners: the food was a bit different every day and we always found something that we liked. Dinners at the specialty restaurants were much better than in the buffet. We especially liked the French and Italian (air conditioned). Went to Oilo (Mediterranean) but wasn't all that impressed (the reviews I read rated it the best). Sea Side Grill restaurant is beautiful and overlooks the see. The food there for lunch and dinner is average but the view is amazing!
If not for the rooms, this would have been a very enjoyable vacation. I know that you don't really spend that much time in the room, but you SLEEP in it at night and black mold is AN ISSUE! My younger son developed a low grade fever and had swollen eyes after the first week. It might have been an allergic reaction to mold, who knows. Now that we are home, no fever as of yet.
The good - beautiful hotel grounds, beach and sea, entertainment team, specialty restaurants,
Not good - MOLDY ROOMS, service at the beach bar and main buffet.
Stayed for 5 nights with my husband for a short escape to the beach. The beach was gorgeous which is one of the most important factors to us. Overall we Had a good time although it rained for 3 out of the 5 days we were here. The best day we had was an all day excursion to Saona island. It was a gorgeous day and the beach was out of this world. It was so clear it looked like a swimming pool but was much better. The return trip was on a catamaran where we had rum drinks and danced through the sunset until we got to the hotel. We highly recommend this excursion. The hotel and the grounds are in pretty good shape considering it was built in 1997. They are very meticulous with the up keep. It's not super luxurious but was a good value for the price. The staff is fantastic all around and super friendly. They all have a great attitude and do their best to make you feel pampered. The beach is pretty but it's not very large. The alcohol is not premium but ok. They tend to dilute the drinks a bit. Very limited selection of beers. Soda comes out of 2-litter bottles instead of machines or cans or bottles so it often not fizzy enough unless they happen to open a new bottle. The preferred club / VIP is worth the extra money. You have a private pool and beach area and a dedicated concierge, bar and snack area. We were also in the adults-only section which we strongly recommend if you don't have kids. The food at the buffet restaurant is not that great. Typical buffet food. We tried to stay away from it. The ala carte restaurants have much better food, although not that great. The best restaurant is the French (Bordeaux) followed by the Seaside Grill. The Italian was not very good. In general, food was pretty average. Overall, it was good or average. Prefer their more luxurious brands like Secrets and Zoetry.
Excellent resort, great staff, especially sweet mama by the pool! The entertainment was also very good, Picasso and Eddie Murphy were great fun. Food choice was excellent and the rooms were very comfortable. Would definitely recommend!!
Everything was Amazing! The resort was relaxing, room service was great, turn down service was always spot on, both people and staff were very friendly and hospitable, food was good. The only thing I would add is for some of the restaurants to be open for lunch. Would definitely go back!
