We just came back from a week at the Dreams at the end of April. We paid extra for the Preferred Club. On the very first night I was pretty disappointed. The lounge of the resort is a usual favourite spot of mine to sit in the afternoons or evenings, which is when we got there, was really quite simple and sparse. There was the only bar with a lounge area, and they didn't even serve coffee. No, the coffee was served in a separate location, a closed-off room set to freezing temperatures. I'm coming from Toronto, Canada, I do not want to be frozen in Mexico. I'd also like to add that you cannot smoke in the cafeteria (as they call it), or by the bar/lounge. You can only smoke on the balcony/patio, where it's extremely hot, especially during the day, so it makes for quite a bit of travelling around if you like to enjoy a smoke or a cigar with your coffee or Brandy. If the bar area is not too busy though, and there are enough waiters on hand, one of them might be nice enough to bring you a coffee. I was so grateful for that. The coffee was quite good (cappuccino, of course). The food selection at the buffet restaurant was pretty lousy (and this is coming from someone used to going to Cuba). Three of the seven days we were there the buffet restaurant was closed in order to serve the food in the courtyard, like for Mexican Fietsa Taco night. The idea was nice, however, it was so hot outside, and the buffet restaurant had air-conditioning. I was also upset that there was never any fish being grilled fresh. In every other resort I went to there was always a "fish station", which is my favourite. The buffet restaurant was also understaffed - there was one lady responsible for both the pasta station and the burger station, and they were as far apart from each other as possible. She was the only cook for dinner all week. Breakfast was great, lost of selection, especially the bread and fruit. I did enjoy the grill restaurant by the beach, their food was pretty good. I was a bit upset that you couldn't smoke there, even when we're practically on the beach, with a wonderful sea breeze. Moving on... Most days we spent by the pool. It was amazing, we stayed in the water all day. There were five or six pools, we liked the adult-only pool. It was an infinity pool, so we sat at the edge and watched the beach and the waves. Unfortunately, that's all we could do with the beach. It was not a flat beach, it declined towards the water and the sand was really soft and difficult to walk on. We went into the sea on the first day and realized that the decline continues in the water. The water was quite rough, the undertow quite strong, so it made it very difficult to climb out of the water. People were basically beaching themselves like whales (sorry whales), then crawling out of the water's way on all fours. Pretty funny when it's not you. It took all day to get all the sand out. The hotel was very clean, I was actually amazed at how often someone was cleaning something. The pools were amazing, as I mentioned earlier, and the service by the pool was excellent. The waiters really made my day by filling up my water bottle with ice, among other drinks. We had some sort of allergic reaction while on vacation, reasons still unknown, and we had to see a doctor. Dr. Andres was exceptional. Very courteous, he explained everything and made us feel a whole lot better before ever leaving his office. Thank you so much Dr. Andres, and to your assistants. If you happen to need a doctor I highly recommend a visit to Dr. Andres. One more thing to add - Karaoke. Might not be everyone's favourite, but after a shot or two of 100 year old Tequila it's a party. Thank you to Angelica and Leo for the awesome time we had at Karaoke. You made the evening come alive. The rooms were modern and beautiful. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable, honestly. I have never slept so wonderfully and comfortably in a hotel before. The shower was great - especially the rainforest shower - AMAZING. That's about it. Don't bother paying for the Preferred Club because I am really not sure what was special about it, other that the super quick check in and check out. I guess we had internet in our room, but who knows, maybe everyone else did also. We had free room service, which I highly recommend. It was the best meal of the week - thank you chef for the amazing Chicken BLT. There was no Preferred club section by the pools or the beach, by the way, people sat where they wanted. Brown towel, orange towel - who cares. Although, they were nice and big, and easily accessible. More>

one long night

Although this is a lovely spot, my adult daughter and I had a miserable night at this resort. There was a wedding reception right outside our room that started at 10:00 pm and didn't wrap up until after 2:00 am. The band was extremely loud! I attempted to call down to the front desk at 11:00pm, but there was no answer after numerous attempts. I got dressed and went down to the front desk to complain, and was told that we would be given some compensation. We never heard from the management--not so much as an apology. I would recommend you make sure there aren't any weddings planned during your stay! More>

Excellent location and beach. Smaller quiet resort. Impeccable service and food. Beach was fantastic. Rooms are really nice. If you are looking for night life and partying it's not for you but if you are looking for quiet clean resort with a beach to relax its perfect. More>

We came back from a week vacation at the Dreams in Huatulco on April 28th. We booked the Preferred Club, which means we paid more, and let me tell you that apart from the Check In with the Concierge instead of waiting in line at the Front Desk and the Room Service included, there is nothing else worth paying the extra dollars. Ah, I remember, we had free Internet but I don't know if that is because we were Preferred Club or everybody else had. The first day we were very disappointed already. The lobby, which is the point of attraction in all the resorts, with a few bars usually and coffee bars, is very simplistic, not appealing. There is only one bar in the lobby, very, very poorly looking and you can't even have a coffee there. We do not drink, so for us the bars, especially in Cuba, are for getting all kinds of coffee which we love. There is only one shop in that lobby that serves coffee. To get a coffee you have to go to that only shop! And, there is no way you can enjoy having a cigarette or a cigar or a brandy with the coffee because the lobby is smoke-free. You can ONLY smoke on the patio where is very, very hot. The rooms were great, the bed, the pillows and the bathroom, superb. The service in the restaurants is good, the waiters at the pool are outstanding. The food is average, nothing to write home about. We couldn't go into the ocean because there are always waves and even worse is the undertow. That was very disappointing to us because we like to be on the beach and in the ocean and not sitting by the pool. We didn't have a choice this time. The pools are very nice, clean and you could be in the pool and watch the ocean. We had some sort of allergy and we had to see the resort doctor. Dr. Andres was very professional and the service was excellent. This was the first time in so many years that we had to see a doctor on our vacation and we were very happy to be treated by him. All in all, I wouldn't give it a 5 stars and I would not pay for Preferred Club at this resort. And I don't think we will come back here a second time for the reasons I mentioned above. More>

Good family hotel, some things to improve

The hotel is located in the Tangolunda bay, only two hotels have direct access to this part of the bay beach (Barcelo, Dreams), other hotel (Park royal) have a beach club in the bay but the hotel is located in the avenue. The bay is small and not tranquile, during all our stay we couldn´t swim at the sea because the red flag were shown, the first day we were only strolling at the beach and we notice that the tides were a little rough. The weather is nice but very hot, the first day we were at 36o C then we took a tour to Mazunte, Zipolite and Ventanilla and the temperature there were higher. It could be better if the hotel invest in more trees or some structures to protect the clients from the sun because there are places where, if you are not in a good spot you will be suffering a little, also some tourists like to leave their things in the best spots and then go to have breakfast in order to reserve the spots, so you couldn´t have the best places if you arrive at that time to the pools or the beach. It is a family hotel, so be prepare to be in a very noisy place, if you have kids, the hotel will try to locate you at ground level near the pool, this mean that all these rooms are noisy, then the hotel uses these corridors to transport certain things (glasses, sodas, equipment, etc.) so, this add more noise. I was at room 4161. In Huatulco you wouldn´t find any big chain restaurants, or stores like walmart, there is only one supermarket that is called Super Che (from the Chedraui chain), if you want to go to Crucecita (downtown) a taxi will cost you 40 pesos. Taxis are well organized here and you will have the same prize if you take one from Crucecita to the hotel. Having visited Mazunte, I think it would be wise for the hotel to have the beauty products that the community prepare as amenities or on sale, because they are good and natural products. Food and drink variety is not a strenght of the hotel, but the food is good, they try to fit the taste of the international tourist and some for the locals, without being to traditional (like having too spicy food). I think that the bathrooms could be enhaced, because none of them have air conditioning (nor in the facilities, nor in the rooms), in the rooms the bathrooms doesn´t have windows, air conditioning or air extractors that works. The pools are very nice, for the kids is wonderful that they could swim almost in all the pools (depth of 1.30 mts). You are not allowed to eat at the pools, but you could have all the drinks that you want. Overall is a good place, however since Huatulco has more bays and beaches next time I will try another hotel.
