Love Huatulco - Dreams is good for family with children - adult only just ok -

This is our first visit to Huatulco and Dreams. We love the area, people, ocean activities, safety of area and the eco minded resort and overall community. Peaceful and very beautiful - downside is the travel to and from LAX... don't like not being able to fly directly to Huatulco - Mexico City airport is big and draining on one energy. The Huatulco airport is awesome - why are there NO direct flights - the Canadians enjoy that feature. Our departing flight was delayed and Aeromexico did a great job of taking care of us by picking up the expenses for the delay out of our control. Only problem was the very long travel connections. We would go back to Huatulco if there was a direct flight in the Huatulco International airport - they do have customs. We were with a family and friends celebrating my sons 50th birthday - when we made our reservations with Apple we made specific arrangements to have all of rooms close to each other - that did not happen and the hotel staff said that they do not make that guarantee - why aren't Apple and the Dreams on the same page - do not make arrangements that are not able to be kept! I used the spa for a very over priced mani and pedi - can't even hold a candle to what I receive at home. For the price I would have thought I would enjoy a nice foot/leg hand/arm massage --- NOT. Just a gentle rub - and my polish job didn't hold up. Attendant very sweet but the whole experience wasn't worth the price - fish tank was fun and I should have stopped there. I would like a call from an Apple rep to discuss my comments but I am not holding my breathe.

We have returned to Dreams for four years in a row. We love the hotel/people/weather and the area. We did notice this trip that the evening dinners quality and selection were no where near as good as in the past. The food at breakfast and lunch was excellent. We will be returning in February to the Secrets Resort.

I would have not paid for 'Preferred Plus' if I knew that Volaris did not have first class seating.

huatulco - dreams resort vacation

Loved the Dreams resort absolute perfect weather every day even though it said chance of storms several days, we never hardly saw one cloud.. restaurant situation was a bit “off” the Mexican restaurant was closed due to a jewish group being there and using it the ENTIRE week for all their meals.. so the resort had to shut down the seafood restaurant several days in order to service Mexican food there.. and the Italian restaurant closed one night as well…. We had thought all five restaurants were to be open every night…. Some of the food tasted the same in several restaurants, we did enjoy several good dinners though.. The issue for dinner for us was that after showering and dressing up, it would have been nice to eat at an AIR CONDITIONED dining room… all but the Italian restaurant is outdoors, and in Huatulco, the temp and humidity are very high and can get uncomfortable while your eating…. The Italian is also the most formal restaurant. Just would have liked to dine in comfortable temperatures in the evening after being in the heat/sun all day…. Staff was excellent.. a few language barriers at times in translating what we wanted or needed… but nothing that we couldn’t handle….. our stay was excellent.. Took a waterfall tour… that was nice… the two hour horrific rocky/bumpy road to the mountains was less than enjoyable though… originally we had booked an ATV ride to the mountains which got cancelled due to the community protesting and blocking the roads, so we ended up booking through doing the Van ride to the mountain for same price. Also took a boat/snorkel tour… saw turtles, dolphins, did some fishing, ate ashore (exchange rate was a ripoff ashore btw… lunch cost us $150 american dollars for tacos guacamole and a couple beers) – next time we skip the lunch and head back to hotel earlier….saw some very exotic cool fish.. our diver caught a puffer fish and let us hold it, as well as several star fish… got some great underwater photos/videos We didn’t realize it was the week when thousands of people from Mexico city flock to the pacific coast for their religious holiday… so after three nice and relaxed uncrowded days by our pool/resort, we were bombarded with hundreds of family with small kids who some of which had no disregard for smoking, running in between our pool chairs and not being supervised…. Lucky they mostly left after wednesday evening, so we had Thursday and Friday back to somewhat quieter resort. Nightlife no good for teens

I would recommend offering some healthier food options. All veggies had butter or oil and even fish was offered with a lot of oil. I tried to ask for my fish to be grilled one day and they said that the cook doesn't cook on the grill station and could only prepare it on the griddle.

Very impressed with Dreams Hotel and Huatulco. The weather is best in Mexico, hotel was immaculate and the staff went out of their way to provide service. Lots of options for dinner. Different pools and bars for different speeds. The Huatulco area is surrounded by national national parks and the Sierra Madres Mountain range provides an excellent background. Clean beaches and great snorkeling. Also rafting, fishing and waterfalls. If you want to experience a five star hotel at a good price, try the Dreams.

Great Relaxation Resort

Fantastic resort for relaxation. Food was really good for the most part. Staff were very polite and courteous and always willing to help. Our room was very spacious clean and neat. Very, very little commercialization around resort, unlike Riviera Maya or Cabo . One can leave the resort day or night to visit local establishments with no worries, absolutely safe to do us. Would recommend this resort to everyone. Plan on returning in the very near future.

Maybe not Dreams (Next Time)

We travelled to Dreams Huatulco late November and this was our 5th time here. We always felt this would be our go to place but not so much now. The area is very safe for tourists. This time the resort was a little lacking, the food not as top notch without all the selection we experienced from prior visits. Always clean in and around the resort but the pool had a terrible case of moldy mildew tiles on the waters edge of the infinity pool. Not nice. The view from the infinity pools are incredible though. The washrooms around the pools were always very clean, well maintained. The wait staff in the restaurants and pool area were always friendly and go out of their way to satisfy. Top brand alcohol in your drinks, you just have to ask. With so much selection and closer destinations, we may have less desire coming back to the Dreams. The airport is growing with many shops now and eating areas when departing Huatulco. We were disappointed with the Sunwing crew on our return, not once were we asked if we would like a drink of water. Terrible. Didn't even see them walking through.

A lot of good and equal area for improvement...

This is the most difficult review I have written out of the 98 reviews that I have done… We have stayed at many Mexican All Inclusive resorts. At the Mayan, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta. This is the 1st time in Huatulco. We felt very mixed emotions on this trip. The good… La Crucecita is VERY CLEAN and lush with boulevards, with grass and palm trees. Taxi drivers have set prices and friendly, some speak a bit of English some do not, but then my Spanish is limited. They say the tourists are about 80% Canadians, 15% Mexican, 5% other and I believe that is about correct. The Tourists are very friendly with each other. We made some good friends in the 8 days we were there and a lot of people that would just stop and chat for 45 minutes, mostly from AB and SK. I would say it is the friendliest resort & town for tourists we have ever been too. We stayed at Dreams as a couple with no children. The room: - Beds are comfortable. - Shower has good pressure. Has a rain shower and a pressure wand. Shampoo was mint, there is NO conditioner. - Very clean. - Drank a couple of Corona out of the fridge that were never replaced. Water and pop were always replaced. - Balcony had a Jacuzzi on it that we never used. - Total of 4 drawers. - There is a safe that you do not have to pay extra for. - There is a blow dryer. - There is a weight scale… sadly, it is accurate. Service: The staff are absolutely AMAZING at Dreams. We could not believe it when Luisa at the buffet said to us our room number and our name the second day we were there… I am certain she must take home the sheet and memorize it! TOTALLY Awesome! Genner at the Himitsu Oriental restaurant has an awesome memory also, I went one night for a Manhattan and told them how to make it, after that, as soon as I walked in he would tell the staff, ”Manhattan” and it was there waiting for me. Absolutely no complaints with the staff. Awesome job to all! Including room service staff. Ala Cartes: Favourites were the Himitsu (Oriental) and Portofino (Italian). We read that they give buzzers when busy but they do not, you have to sit and wait. Beach: Great beach… I found out that the beaches cannot be owned by the resorts or personally… you can walk the Dreams beach, Barceló’s Beach, another resort’s beach all the way down to the river… about a 20 minute walk one way if not rushing. However… this also means on Sunday’s a lot of the locals come and use the Dreams beach so it is busy on Sundays. Depending on the moon, the water is either calm or very, very rough. If it is calm, it is “okay” snorkelling, if not, it is scary swimming. It drops off quickly, so you are in 4 feet of water to all of a sudden over your head… be careful. Love the fresh oysters at the south end of the beach. The yellow umbrella, we paid 20 pesos for 2. Tried to climb over the rocks to walk Camino Real Beach but just too slippery and scared… Met a Calgarian half way that was trying to get to our side and had a great conversation… Again, super friendly people. Other friends we met said there were some foot steps to the left at the top of the rocks that you could take… I was too scared to try again. Alcohol: They have upper end liquor at the restaurants such as Grand Marnier and Flora de Cana 7 year old rum. (See areas for improvement for additional info) Getting around: At other towns/resorts we are used to walking out to the road and catching the local bus, you cannot do that in Huatulco, you need to take a taxi. From Dreams to La Crucecita a taxi costs 43 pesos one way so basically 50 pesos each way. Market across the street: Has good quality men’s t-shirts, 2 for 400 pesos. Areas for improvement… The buffet is the lowest rated of all the resorts we have stayed in. Limited selection and most items are much too salty. We were going to an ala carte then saw the buffet had Garlic Soup and Paella so thought we’d have that. Both of us could not eat the Garlic soup as it was extremely salty and ate the seafood in the paella but could not eat the rice because of how salty it was. Saving chairs: There are signs saying you can’t save longer than 30 minutes... 1 hour is more appropriate if you are going for breakfast or lunch, although, no staff enforce this rule, yet they should. First day we arrived at the beach at 8:25 am and got chairs on the 1st row with no problem. After that, you had to be at the beach before 6:30 AM to get chairs in the 1st row. The reason the 1st row is important is because if you are in the 2nd row and the people in front of you are smokers, all the smoke blows directly at you. Beach/Pool: We sat at the beach just outside the Adult pool most days, loved to watch and listen to the waves. Last 2 days, late twenty/early thirty-year olds at the pool with a Bluetooth speaker had their music blaring… Not one staff member, told them to turn it down. There are no ashtrays on the beach. It would be good if they would place a can with sand in it at each Palapa so that there wouldn’t be so many cigarette butts in the sand where you sit. Staff would rake them up but didn’t always get them all. A couple of nails placed in the Palapa up high so that you can hang your bags would be good also. Mosquitos/sandflies warning: Bought ”Extreme” bug spray from town, yet ended up with over 20 huge welt bites on my legs and back… very itchy for days. Not sure of the cause but my suggestion is to take something with “Deet” and spray morning and evening. Activities: No one seemed to know what was happening when? A list placed on your bed each evening would solve that problem. I would have loved yoga on the beach every morning… Other people we met just didn’t feel there was enough entertainment in the evening… dancing or traditional Mariachi music. It would be nice to have an Adult dance lounge opening at 8 PM (not a disco). Alcohol/bars: The Rendezvous Lobby bar sometimes had umbrellas up and other times not. We found it too hot to sit without umbrellas. I asked for a Grand Marnier but they were out of stock so I asked for a Manhattan (Crown Royal and Rosso) but they had no Rosso/sweet vermouth, they were out of stock. I asked again for the next 2 days and they never did restock either. This was the same for the Seaside Grill bar, they never had Rosso sweet vermouth. Discovered after we left the resort that there was an Adult Only music bar that opened at 10 PM – 1 AM. It would have been nice if this had opened a bit earlier, maybe 9 PM? Rock band at pool during the day was very good; however, it would be better if they were placed back away from the pool since they were so loud that they cleared the pool area out! Would have liked them to play in the evening with a dance area! It would be nice if they had a small snack bar with nachos, cheese, salsa and guacamole at or near the Barracuda bar or further back by Adult Pool. Gift shop is VERY expensive. Bug spray was 140 pesos; whereas, in town it was 67 pesos. Yes, there are loose and broke tiles, but more important, is how slippery they are with just a bit of water on them. Watch your step. In summary, there is a lot of good and equal area for improvement. We found there was not enough to do at the resort for us. If we go back, it would be for the friendly people and staff.

Wonderful Week!

We just returned from a wonderful restorative week at Dreams Huatulco. I had previously been here with my husband in February 2017, escorting our annual Golf Getaway with 22 other golfers. Because we enjoyed it so much, when choosing a resort for a much needed week away with my Mother, we decided on Dreams Huatulco. A couple of weeks prior to our arrival, I was in touch with Fernando Ramirez, Rooms Division Manager, to request a room close to the amenities, as my Mother is 79 and unable to walk long distances easily. He responded promptly to my email, and we were delighted upon arrival to be placed in an Ocean Front Room, next to the elevator, in a central part of the resort. Thank you Fernando! Dreams is a lovely resort with numerous infinity pools, lovely beach, numerous a la carte restaurants with no reservations required, and a terrific staff. The staff work very hard to fulfill any request, and always seem to be genuine in their reply to same with: "It's my pleasure." Whomever is responsible for the hiring/training of staff is to be commended, as you will not find a more engaged, committed, staff overall, anywhere. We had a wonderful week, made some new fun friends and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The resort is large enough to have everything you need, and yet small enough to access all amenities fairly easily. The Lobby Bar is the place to be in the evenings for drinks under the stars and some local entertainment. Again, the wonderful staff is what sets this resort apart and makes this a top pick for me, if you are choosing an All-Inclusive beach resort experience. Thank you Dreams Huatulco, and especially Fernando for providing us with such a lovely week. I know I will be returning again, and will be suggesting to my husband that we return to Dreams for one of our Golf group trips in the future.
