This hotel was amazing. Although it is one of the smaller resorts it was a big hit with me and my husband. Start to Finish the food, staff, activities and entertainment spot on. The two trips we scheduled were wonderful as well. Could not have asked for a better time. We will be returning next year. Thank You Marta for everything:)

Upgraded to Privileged which only gets you access to 1 restaurant which has the same menu for ever meal. The alcohol is low grade only "exclusive" members get better quality which is not high end either. Example-High end is Jack Daniels? The staff was amazing. Apple needs to also disclose there is an environmental fee at checkout which wasn't a lot of money but should be mentioned. Overall good hotel I'm more disappointed with Apple not disclosing information.

This was my husband and I's first trip to Mexico, out of the country, to the caribbean islands, The Ocean. Our first day at the resort we were absolutely heartbroken when we seen the ocean and sea grass! It was 5-6 feet deep along the entire resort, it stunk, it had flies, they never did clean it up, it was there the entire time. We were unable to even walk in the ocean, let alone swim or snorkel. I understand its nature, but why were we not warned of this situation? Given the option to change locations? Then the tropical storm, Alberto, Formed right over our resort! Double Red Flags were out on the beach (which means closed!) everyday we were there the surf was so strong and windy. It rained, everyday, most of the day, for 5 out of our 6 nights. The resort dinner buffet was closed the entire time as well, leaving you with only alacarte choices, and they were awful. No american food at all. The food that was suppose to be served hot, was always cold, or lukewarm, and then the cold food was HOT or lukewarm. We had stomach issues the whole time we were there, along with several other travelers. This resort leaves alot to be desired. And if it rains, there is absolutely nothing to do! Only had 1 english TV channel in our room CNN! I feel like Apple lead me to believe this was a very strong 4.8 star resort with a beautiful beach, which it was anything but that. I would never return.

2nd time at Catalonia Royal Tulum - Will Be Back!
JULIE W.
Dec 28 2017
Stayed here in March 2017 for a week and when we got back home, I immediately booked another week for mid-December for my 60th birthday. Love this place. Will definitely be back. Our top priority is the beach, and this one is spectacular - great for swimming and snorkeling every day. Second priority is all-adult, which this is without being overly expensive. Third is quality of food & drink - we like the food very much. We feel there is plenty of variety. My favorite is BeLoved restaurant (yes, we upgraded to Privileged), and then next the Steakhouse out by the pool (which is the lunch buffet during the day). Only complaint was that one evening we went to the lobby for the Mexican trio entertainment, only to be told they would not be showing up. So we were disappointed about that, but it was not that big of a deal... we ended up meeting some great people anyway. I thought the Italian restaurant was good - had the lasagna, so yummy!! I especially love the lunch buffet out by the pool where you can choose your entree like grouper, sea bass, salmon... or pork, beef, chicken, and they grill it for you right there... along with grilled veggies. So good. Then I would top it off with pesto basil sauce which they have right there by the grill. Plus of course they have about a dozen other entrees you can choose from along with fresh breads, fruit, salads, and of course all the desserts. Sorry, but anyone who complains about the food at the lunch buffet is crazy in my opinion. The dinner buffet up by the lobby on the other hand was not a favorite. It was GREAT for breakfast, but not so much for dinner. I really could go on and on about this place, but the best thing I can say is that we are definitely going back. Well worth it.

The perfect resort!

I spent some time searching for this resort. I began by searching the Riviera Maya coast line to look for a resort that was stacked against others. Then, I went to Trip Advisor to read the reviews on this resort. Then, I booked it through Apple Vacations. This resort is smaller and does not have a "grandiose" entrance. But it is WONDERFUL on the inside!!!...wonderful people working there!...wonderful beach!....clear water!...great food!!...wonderful rooms! There are some "little" things that really set this resort apart for us. You do not need any reservations for any of the specialty restaurants and no dress shoes or dress pants are required. Another plus for us was that every evening they brought fresh, clean beach towels to your ROOM as opposed to having to swap them at some towel shack on the beach. This resort is quieter. It is perfect for an escape to relax. We go primarily for the beach and water. Unlike so many parts of the Riviera Maya where you need something on your feet to protect you against the rocks. This beach is a sandy, barefoot beach. The water is clear and there are great reefs for snorkeling a short swim off the beach. We have been THREE times in the past two years and already thinking about planning trip number four. It is the ONLY resort to which we have wanted to return over and over. I hate letting this secret out! I just hope i will always be able to get a room.

Much more "selling" & emphasis on the" Privileged" package. Special rooms, special restaurants, special tables in "common people" restaurants. Will never fly Spirit again. Not even peanuts or water without a charge. Charge for boarding passes, luggage $40 a bag. They even charge for carry ons.

The beach here was very nice! We paid for the privileged upgrade but found it hard to get a beach chair in that area if we didn't show up at 8am. Most of the staff was really friendly but we did have a few that were pretty short and not as friendly as expected.

My wife and I have been to the Royal Catalonia Tulum 7 times now. It is essential to recharging our batteries every year. Far removed from Cancun - and smaller than a lot of those hotels - it is the perfect place to relax and have good food, quality service and an amazing staff.

The Catalonia Tulum property is incredible. The food is very good, the beach is awesome, staff was excellent. I would recommend upgrading to the Privl. deluxe only for the better room, but even they have their faults. After 3 days the a/c was less and less cooler, which never got address. The rain shower shower was super nice, water pressure in room 6214 was fabulous! One of our maids, Margareita (sp?) was ALWAYS smiling and friendly (she deserves a better position with that wonderful attitude!). There is NO BEACH / OCEAN views from any of the rooms that I could tell. You have the incredible forest in between the buildings/the walk way made of pure white stone (awesome and always being cleaned) that is like a mini paradise for the native creatures! We have stayed all over the world, usually in 5 stars properties, this misses the mark only due to the lack of the small details a 5 star property includes, like towel service at the POOL, a turn down service that actually turns down the bed and gives fresh bath towels...BUT~BUT I understand where they are coming from in saving the environment~so I am not 100% sure of this not qualifying the as a 5 stars. The food was great, Not so thrilled with BELOVED and their goofy over worded menu...the buffets were incredible. Least favorite...Italian. Would skip that one. They ran out of Stoli vodka, a lot! The more expensive booze was for the most privledged guest. All in all, a very nice property! Only reason I would not go back, there are so many other places to visit! Rented a car from America something of other. No issues driving or with the insurance. Take out the least expensive insurance you have to by law. AND BEWARE OF THE FOLKS IN THE BLUE SHIRTS AFTER YOU GO THUR IMMIGRATION, THEY ARE NOT THERE TO HELP...ONLY THERE TO TRY AND SELL YOU A CONDO! SAME THING AT THE CAR RENTALS...GET YOUR CAR AND GET OUT! Oh, and the other reason not a 5 stars, have to wear stupid plastic bracelet (that gets full of water u can not get out and scratches) plus when u go shopping off property, everyone knows where u are staying and the say HEY, REMEMBER ME? I AM YOUR WAITER AT CATALONIA...GEEZ SO MANY GUYS SAID THAT I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE WERE ANY WAITERS LEFT WORKING AT THE CATALONIA!!

Overall the resort the excellent. The 'good' rating on the comfort of the room was because the air conditioning didn't work that well. The resort had maintenance look at it (after a few repeated calls) with no improvement so they provided a fan. The entertainment was lacking compared to other resorts that I have stayed at. The service was excellent. The beach was perfect.

Nice hotel, decent price

We just returned from Catalonia Royal Tulum and had a good time. Here are the high points: The Beach was nice, but the seaweed is still an issue. They try and remove it often, but don't expect to see the crystal clear, white sand beach you might be expecting. The food was decent. We've definitely had better, but it wasn't bad. If you're a foodie, this won't meet your standards. The service was also ok. This resort didn't have the "at your service/para servirle" feel that most of the others we've stayed at do. They are nice, but no one is going out of their way to help you - from the front desk to the bartenders to the waiters/waitresses. The nightlife was lacking. The guests at the hotel are mostly middle aged, but not really much for them to do. The "disco" is ..well...this hotel needs something to do after dark. The entertainment team was pretty much non-existent. The spa definitely leaves much to be desired. None of the normal pampering you might expect - they don't even have robes or slippers! Overall - decent hotel, decent food, decent service - nothing really to brag nor complain about.

This is our 2nd time returning to this property - and the first time we have ever re-visited a hotel in our travels. Both years we had upgraded our visit to the Privileged level and believe it is worth the bump up in price. You get access to a special area of the beach along with beachfront cocktail service and also to the Bloved restaurant which, as seafood lovers, we dined at three times a day - every day. You also have access to some upgraded liquor options which is nice too. Unlike some other areas like Cancun, what makes Xpu-Ha special is the fact that the beach is only about a mile long - which means you take a walk, you aren't confronted with big hotel after big hotel - it feels like a really special place. When we visited last year, the beach was beautiful. This year, there was an influx of seaweed - can't control mother nature and that will probably change soon. The pool area is really nice as well. There are no ocean front rooms at this property which is fine with us as each room views the mangrove forest which is beautiful. We'd hang out on our patio every afternoon and take advantage of the lush green views before heading to dinner. This is truly a relaxing place. If I had any areas of improvement for the hotel I would say that the front desk staff isn't as friendly and welcoming as I would expect, especially considering service levels in other areas of the hotel. They also have a level of guest experience above Privileged which is called Excellence. The experience for those guests is even more elevated but sometimes you need to dodge the staff wanting to speak to you about the package and offerings. This is all well and good if you are interested in staying multiple times across Catalonia resorts but I just don't want to be sold to while on vacation. Overall, this place is a great stay and we would certainly consider a future visit. Recommendation for summer visitors: bring bug spray for the evenings.

Just returned from a 10 night stay at the Catalonia Royal Tulum. Overall a very pleasant stay. Our room was lovely and the grounds were to a very high standard and maintained daily. All of the restaurants were great with the steakhouse being our favourite. The only real negative is the sea-grass on the beach but this is of no fault to the hotel and i was told this has only recently become a problem due to a change in the current so i imagine this will effect other hotels in the area too. I'd like to give a special mention to Ana on the entertainment team who was fantastic and a real credit to the hotel.

Had a fantastic stay at this hotel we upgraded to the privilege and were not disappointed. All the staff are fantastic always smiling and very helpful the Beloved restaurant has some fantastic food and the lounge area was simply the best just sit there and watch the world go by I would highly recommend this hotel and I hope to return next year. The grounds are well manicured the beach well looks after unfortunately there was a lot of sargassum this year but that is not the hotels fault that is Mother Nature I felt sorry for the hotel staff having to wheelbarrow it away every morning a thankless task as it would return again the next day all the restaurants are of a high standard the rooms are very nice and kept well by the cleaning staff all in all they really look after this place and the guests.

It was fine

The housekeeping & turndown schedule could improve. When they first cleaned our room one day, they took our pool towels (which apparently they replace at the evening turndown); when I called multiple times for towels because we were going to go back to the pool, the gentleman who answered was rude & said we’d have towels by 8:30p which was hours from then.
