4th Catalonia Royal Tulum Stay
STEVEN R.
Aug 04 2018
Had another great stay at the Catalonia Royal Tulum in Xpu Ha. Overall ride down from the airport, check-in, staff support, massage, food, pool were absolutley wonderful. Beach had some seaweed issues, but my brother and I got in some great snorkeling. Didn't hang around the bars much, drinks at the pool and beach were always great. Didn't do much of the entertainment, but listened to a couple of musicians and a mariachi band as well, all very good. CRT has been a great trip for my wife and I over the years. Have recommended it to others.. . .

Beautiful scenery, lack of service and air conditioning.

One thing missing from their website and other reviews is the lack of air conditioning in the restaurants. My husband was so overheated one night, he couldn't even eat dinner. He had to go back to the room to cool down. The staff did not provide the service I expected for the rating of the hotel, and the cost. While the grounds are immaculate, I cannot give such high praise to the servers. At times a drink would come in 5 minutes, or 15. Often, the alcohol requested wasn't given (we got a bottom shelf alcohol the majority of the time). When we asked what beer they had, they said Corona. We found out on day 3/5 that they also serve Negro Modelo, which is a much higher quality of beer. I didn't appreciate the lies or watered down alcohol. The facilities and foliage are beautiful, but the lack of friendliness and attentive service ruined it.

A wonderful getaway

I was with a group of five family members and friends. We had a wonderful time. The food was outstanding, fresh, and varied in interesting and exciting ways from restaurant to restaurant. Unlike other resorts, and especially cruise ships, you actually feel like you're at a different restaurant or bar with each one. As a non-spanish speaker, I generally felt well accommodated. There were two or three instances where I was skipped in line at the bar, but I'll chalk these up to my inability to assert myself in Spanish. However, these were really the only service-related issues, and they were by far less inconvenient compared to other hotel stays in other countries. The room was spotless, and the shower had a refreshing rain-style head with separate spray handle. The bed was clean and comfortable.

First time at an all-inclusive

The Catalonia was a great low key resort. The food was excellent, I would say better than a cruise. The beach was very nice but a lot of seaweed would gather and be in the way in the afternoon. At one point you couldnít even swim. That was only one afternoon out of 5 though. The service was generally very good. We had some issues with getting drinks at the bars as we would be ignored for Spanish speaking guests. We even walked away twice and went somewhere else. The grounds are beautiful, and so is all of the wildlife. The Coatjiís were one of my favorite animals to see! The biggest issue we had was the lack of AC. Only the rooms had AC, the spa and the gym. The few indoor restaurants often had little or no AC. We sweat through the whole meal at the Italian restaurant. I wasnít expecting that and didnít remember reading it in any other reviews. We did go in July when Iím guessing itís hotter, so this might not be an issue in cooler months. Other than that I am very happy with the resort and the vacation and I definitely recommend it!

Excellent hotel across the board. Only complaint is that the pool bar is too close to the beach. The loud music and entertainment makes it difficult to enjoy relaxing and listening to the ocean waves at night. The crowd here skewed young while we were there. Excellent staff/food/rooms/etc.

This hotel was amazing. Although it is one of the smaller resorts it was a big hit with me and my husband. Start to Finish the food, staff, activities and entertainment spot on. The two trips we scheduled were wonderful as well. Could not have asked for a better time. We will be returning next year. Thank You Marta for everything:)

Privilege-through Apple is a rip off

Upgraded to Privileged which only gets you access to 1 restaurant which has the same menu for ever meal. The alcohol is low grade only "exclusive" members get better quality which is not high end either. Example-High end is Jack Daniels? The staff was amazing. Apple needs to also disclose there is an environmental fee at checkout which wasn't a lot of money but should be mentioned. Overall good hotel I'm more disappointed with Apple not disclosing information.

$3,500 - 30th Wedding Anniversary Vacation Disaster 2018

This was my husband and I's first trip to Mexico, out of the country, to the caribbean islands, The Ocean. Our first day at the resort we were absolutely heartbroken when we seen the ocean and sea grass! It was 5-6 feet deep along the entire resort, it stunk, it had flies, they never did clean it up, it was there the entire time. We were unable to even walk in the ocean, let alone swim or snorkel. I understand its nature, but why were we not warned of this situation? Given the option to change locations? Then the tropical storm, Alberto, Formed right over our resort! Double Red Flags were out on the beach (which means closed!) everyday we were there the surf was so strong and windy. It rained, everyday, most of the day, for 5 out of our 6 nights. The resort dinner buffet was closed the entire time as well, leaving you with only alacarte choices, and they were awful. No american food at all. The food that was suppose to be served hot, was always cold, or lukewarm, and then the cold food was HOT or lukewarm. We had stomach issues the whole time we were there, along with several other travelers. This resort leaves alot to be desired. And if it rains, there is absolutely nothing to do! Only had 1 english TV channel in our room CNN! I feel like Apple lead me to believe this was a very strong 4.8 star resort with a beautiful beach, which it was anything but that. I would never return.

2nd time at Catalonia Royal Tulum - Will Be Back!
JULIE W.
Dec 28 2017
Stayed here in March 2017 for a week and when we got back home, I immediately booked another week for mid-December for my 60th birthday. Love this place. Will definitely be back. Our top priority is the beach, and this one is spectacular - great for swimming and snorkeling every day. Second priority is all-adult, which this is without being overly expensive. Third is quality of food & drink - we like the food very much. We feel there is plenty of variety. My favorite is BeLoved restaurant (yes, we upgraded to Privileged), and then next the Steakhouse out by the pool (which is the lunch buffet during the day). Only complaint was that one evening we went to the lobby for the Mexican trio entertainment, only to be told they would not be showing up. So we were disappointed about that, but it was not that big of a deal... we ended up meeting some great people anyway. I thought the Italian restaurant was good - had the lasagna, so yummy!! I especially love the lunch buffet out by the pool where you can choose your entree like grouper, sea bass, salmon... or pork, beef, chicken, and they grill it for you right there... along with grilled veggies. So good. Then I would top it off with pesto basil sauce which they have right there by the grill. Plus of course they have about a dozen other entrees you can choose from along with fresh breads, fruit, salads, and of course all the desserts. Sorry, but anyone who complains about the food at the lunch buffet is crazy in my opinion. The dinner buffet up by the lobby on the other hand was not a favorite. It was GREAT for breakfast, but not so much for dinner. I really could go on and on about this place, but the best thing I can say is that we are definitely going back. Well worth it.

The perfect resort!
DAVID E.

I spent some time searching for this resort. I began by searching the Riviera Maya coast line to look for a resort that was stacked against others. Then, I went to Trip Advisor to read the reviews on this resort. Then, I booked it through Apple Vacations. This resort is smaller and does not have a "grandiose" entrance. But it is WONDERFUL on the inside!!!...wonderful people working there!...wonderful beach!....clear water!...great food!!...wonderful rooms! There are some "little" things that really set this resort apart for us. You do not need any reservations for any of the specialty restaurants and no dress shoes or dress pants are required. Another plus for us was that every evening they brought fresh, clean beach towels to your ROOM as opposed to having to swap them at some towel shack on the beach. This resort is quieter. It is perfect for an escape to relax. We go primarily for the beach and water. Unlike so many parts of the Riviera Maya where you need something on your feet to protect you against the rocks. This beach is a sandy, barefoot beach. The water is clear and there are great reefs for snorkeling a short swim off the beach. We have been THREE times in the past two years and already thinking about planning trip number four. It is the ONLY resort to which we have wanted to return over and over. I hate letting this secret out! I just hope i will always be able to get a room.

First time in Mexico absolutely loved it, the staff were second to none ,everyone from the gardeners , shop, restaurants, reception and bar staff absolutely wonderful nothing was too much trouble and it was all done with a smile. It was my husbands birthday whilst we were there, customer service sent a birthday cake to our room it was beautiful, round the plate written in chocolate was Happy b'day and my husbands name. We had a meal on the beach and the waitress/waiter bought my husbands desert with a candle on and sang happy birthday, we thought this gesture was really very nice of them.We upgraded to privilege and thought it was well worth it. We had 24hour room service, eat in the beloved restaurant which was wonderful the view whilst eating our meals was ace.The food was well presented and tasted just as good. We couldn't find any faults with this hotel, we are now looking to go away in January and in all honesty we are really struggling to find one where the hotel matches this one. Many thanks to each and everyone of the staff they were all brilliant.

We were searching for a vacation that had a balance of relaxation and activity. Catalonia Royal Tulum was perfect for that! Location made it so easy to get to Akumal to snorkel with the turtles, and to Playa del Carmen to shop or take in a fabulous restaurant. The resort itself was simply wonderful. The front desk meets you with a fabulous drink, and the check in process is so smooth. In minutes, you're on the way to your room, and your bags follow! The walkway from the lobby to the rooms and beach/pool is simply amazing. It winds through the trees, and even into the jungle. The sweet little coatis come to see you, as you walk and read the beautiful signs. The one night the local artisans set up and sold their beautiful jewelry and other items was a highlight. I took care of a lot of shopping that evening! The pool is huge, perfectly clean and so refreshing. The fountain in the middle is such a pretty touch. The beach is pristine, and there are tons of chairs, so you can rotate into the shade as the sun moves. Drink service came through frequently. The animacion team kept everything going through the day. Anna and the water aerobics were the highlight of the day! The dive shop was amazing. They set up a great trip to Akumal for us, and they also gave my husband some great tips on where to snorkel off the resort. The rooms are large, and spotlessly clean! The shower head was the best! I wanted to take it home! Also, the towel rack at the back of the shower was perfect to hang up your swim suits to dry, or even your snorkel gear. I loved sitting on our balcony and hearing the birds and other creatures. The restaurants ranged from fantastic (B'Loved and Toscana, as well as the breakfast buffet) to good (the Mexican restaurant) and the not-so-good (Tao Cat), but the service was great in all. The only problem I would note is that you frequently have to request a drink refill. The gift shop has not only the basics, but some really great gift items. And, the sweet young ladies in there were so kind (I did not get their names, but they were just lovely). The gentlemen selling the time shares often get a hard judgment, but they were incredibly nice to us. Once we told them we were not interested, they never approached us aggressively. And, one gentleman, Edwin, even gave us some great local recommendations. Other places we have gone have really pushed, and we appreciated not having to deal with that. The only time we had a problem was a very noisy neighbor. He was yelling and slamming things in the room. We called the front desk and in less than 3 minutes, silence! We never had another moment of trouble!

Stayed twice in a row loved it that much!

Stayed with another couple in July of 2018 and we liked it so much and the price was so good that we went back in September of 2018. The food was pretty good even at the buffet. Beach was well kept and room service 24-7. The best part was the staff. Very friendly and welcoming

Beautiful place and top notch crew!

We arrived to the property late one evening to find a smiling face at the check in counter. He started the stay off on a positive note and gave us each a welcoming cocktail. Our room was on the3rd floor of building 3 and a big ribbon anounced our anniversary on the door for all to see. This week in paradise was to celebrate 13 years and my older brother and wife joined in for the fun. Everyday was just so relaxing and the unlimited food and drinks are the way to go, not needing to worry about carrying around money, etc. I passed plenty of time just lounging and reading my Kindle. The WiFi was excellent throughout. The pool was very comfortable and not having children around was a nice change. Each night, there was a different type of entertainment out on by the resort. The food was great and we bought the privileged room, so we are at B'loved several times and used the bar service close to the privileged lounge chairs on the beach. The smoothies on the beach were really great - I had a Nutrition blend each morning. The beach was absolutely beautiful and the way the pool area ends and the beach is just right there and with so much seating, it was perfect. Great stay halfway between Tulum and PDC.!

The service we received at the buffet was not acceptable. We shouldn't have to get our drinks. I could understand if they were busy but there wasn't that many people in the buffet. The lack of availability in the specialty restaurants was very poor. We went to the Italian restaurant on 2 different occasions and was told it would be a hour wait and there were empty tables. It was very disappointing stay this time. We really liked the resort in the pass but, next time we go to Mexico we will be staying at another resorts.
