Second visit
PHYLLIS K.
Dec 31 2018
We visited this resort many years ago and I have always wanted to go back. I was not disappointed. We were there over Christmas. They put on an excellent Christmas Eve dinner tha t started out at one of the a la carts with wonderful appitizers & drinks. The staff was always very friendly. We always had great service in the buffet for breakfast & lunch. We ate at the Italian twice and the steakhouse twice. We obviously liked it as we went back. We didn’t do the Asian or the Mexican. The only negative was the weather & that is not a fault of the resort. We spent Christmas in Mexico two other times and it was much warmer. The beach & ocean were beautiful. The pool is very nice but the water was too cold to get in. Again no fault of the resort. We would definitely return.

As always this resort did not disappoint us. It is one of the few places we vacation that has an excellent beach (most importantly), excellent staff, excellent food and excellent service. A little disappointed that paddle boards were not available as they are waiting on new paddles as original ones broken. Cost is very reasonable for a week of fun and relaxation. Looking forward to our next visit in March 2019.

4th Catalonia Royal Tulum Stay

Had another great stay at the Catalonia Royal Tulum in Xpu Ha. Overall ride down from the airport, check-in, staff support, massage, food, pool were absolutley wonderful. Beach had some seaweed issues, but my brother and I got in some great snorkeling. Didn't hang around the bars much, drinks at the pool and beach were always great. Didn't do much of the entertainment, but listened to a couple of musicians and a mariachi band as well, all very good. CRT has been a great trip for my wife and I over the years. Have recommended it to others.. . .

Beautiful scenery, lack of service and air conditioning.

One thing missing from their website and other reviews is the lack of air conditioning in the restaurants. My husband was so overheated one night, he couldn't even eat dinner. He had to go back to the room to cool down. The staff did not provide the service I expected for the rating of the hotel, and the cost. While the grounds are immaculate, I cannot give such high praise to the servers. At times a drink would come in 5 minutes, or 15. Often, the alcohol requested wasn't given (we got a bottom shelf alcohol the majority of the time). When we asked what beer they had, they said Corona. We found out on day 3/5 that they also serve Negro Modelo, which is a much higher quality of beer. I didn't appreciate the lies or watered down alcohol. The facilities and foliage are beautiful, but the lack of friendliness and attentive service ruined it.

I was with a group of five family members and friends. We had a wonderful time. The food was outstanding, fresh, and varied in interesting and exciting ways from restaurant to restaurant. Unlike other resorts, and especially cruise ships, you actually feel like you're at a different restaurant or bar with each one. As a non-spanish speaker, I generally felt well accommodated. There were two or three instances where I was skipped in line at the bar, but I'll chalk these up to my inability to assert myself in Spanish. However, these were really the only service-related issues, and they were by far less inconvenient compared to other hotel stays in other countries. The room was spotless, and the shower had a refreshing rain-style head with separate spray handle. The bed was clean and comfortable.

First time at an all-inclusive

The Catalonia was a great low key resort. The food was excellent, I would say better than a cruise. The beach was very nice but a lot of seaweed would gather and be in the way in the afternoon. At one point you couldn’t even swim. That was only one afternoon out of 5 though. The service was generally very good. We had some issues with getting drinks at the bars as we would be ignored for Spanish speaking guests. We even walked away twice and went somewhere else. The grounds are beautiful, and so is all of the wildlife. The Coatji’s were one of my favorite animals to see! The biggest issue we had was the lack of AC. Only the rooms had AC, the spa and the gym. The few indoor restaurants often had little or no AC. We sweat through the whole meal at the Italian restaurant. I wasn’t expecting that and didn’t remember reading it in any other reviews. We did go in July when I’m guessing it’s hotter, so this might not be an issue in cooler months. Other than that I am very happy with the resort and the vacation and I definitely recommend it!

Excellent hotel across the board. Only complaint is that the pool bar is too close to the beach. The loud music and entertainment makes it difficult to enjoy relaxing and listening to the ocean waves at night. The crowd here skewed young while we were there. Excellent staff/food/rooms/etc.

This hotel was amazing. Although it is one of the smaller resorts it was a big hit with me and my husband. Start to Finish the food, staff, activities and entertainment spot on. The two trips we scheduled were wonderful as well. Could not have asked for a better time. We will be returning next year. Thank You Marta for everything:)

Privilege-through Apple is a rip off
LYNN B.

Upgraded to Privileged which only gets you access to 1 restaurant which has the same menu for ever meal. The alcohol is low grade only "exclusive" members get better quality which is not high end either. Example-High end is Jack Daniels? The staff was amazing. Apple needs to also disclose there is an environmental fee at checkout which wasn't a lot of money but should be mentioned. Overall good hotel I'm more disappointed with Apple not disclosing information.

Can't wait to return for our 13th visit!

This was my mother and I’s 12th trip to the Catalonia and 4th for my best friend. We so enjoy this resort! It is small, quiet, clean and lovely. This is not a place to go for spring break or to party. It is peace and quiet that we so need. They have a beautiful pool and beach that are always just the right temperature. Yes, there is some seaweed but all beaches on this side of Mexico are experiencing the same and they have workers tirelessly cleaning the beach early every morning. We have always enjoyed the breakfast and lunch buffets and can’t imagine someone can’t find something they like with such a variety. My mother enjoyed her omelet’s that were made to order and my friend always made a huge salad for lunch. If you upgrade to Privilege, you can enjoy the restaurant BeLoved on the beach for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But if you can’t afford the upgrade, no worries, you’ll still have a great time! We usually try all the restaurants once and then go back to our favorites. We are so pleased each year when we return and see the same staff. They go above and beyond to ensure you are having a good time. If there is anything you need, just ask! Call reception or leave a note for housekeeping staff. We always bring an American/Spanish dictionary so that we can write (or at least try!) to write our requests in Spanish. But, many of the staff speaks English and other languages. Please, please tip the staff! They work long days, six days a week and always have a smile on their face and ready to ensure you have a wonderful time. I can’t imagine how many miles the wait staff walk that serve drinks at the beach and the pool! And we just love Rosa! She is part of the entertainment staff and we look forward to hearing her laugh every year. Thank you to: Isabelle in Reception, Miguel in Guest Services, Victoria our housekeeper, the incredible wait staff: Amalia, Rosario (there are 2 of you!) Amado, Sandy, Angel, David, Enrique, Esteban, Aracelli, Alessandro, Carlos, Fanni, Roberto, Juan and Gabriel. We know we have forgotten some names but certainly not your faces and we can’t wait to see you next year! Muchas gracias a todos nuestros amigos de la Catalonia!

Overall a good experience. I loved the nature filled pathways. The coatis made everyone happy and cheerful. The entertainment team and the staff in general worked pretty hard to make us feel good and comfortable. Beach cleaning should be improved. Thank you for a pleasant, sunny week!

My fiancé and I took a trip from 2/24 - 3/2 to CRT and we absolutely loved it! We traveled to Catalonia Maroma last year and decided to give CRT a try this year. We booked privileged and we're so glad we did because having access to BLoved was the highlight of our trip! I truly enjoyed having the option to come there at any moment of the day for a meal or snack especially with the amazing views. We got up in the morning for the sunrise and hit BLoved for delicious juice and breakfast, cappuccinos were amazing as well. Everyone at the resort was very friendly, especially Adolfo- I remembered to write his name down because he gave great service. The only negative thing I have to say is that I wish we had a better welcoming- I believe it was Christian who helped us check in when we arrived. I compare this experience to when we arrived at the Maroma location (felt very comfortable and welcomed by staff there). My fiancé and I both noticed the awkwardness when checking in... I guess it kind of started the experience with a bad impression, other than that, we truly did enjoy our stay at CRT. We had a lot of seaweed on the beach during our stay, BUT the staff did a fabulous job trying to clean it up and the water was still beautiful. The restaurants had no waits during the times we went and food was delicious at each one (we really loved the lasagna at the Italian restaurant, wish I could take it home). Thanks for a memorable trip!

Second Time Stay

Firstly, I'd give the resort a 4.5 out of 5, but I'll be generous and round up. We do like the Catalonia Royal Tulum, having stayed here for the first time in 2017. It was a risk to go back to the same place (at least, that's the theory as voiced to me) but we decided 'better the devil you know', etc. It was a smart decision. Everything we enjoyed about the resort the first time we experienced again, despite the long drive from Cancun airport (more than an hour). We did not step foot off the premises once we arrived. The property is small (288 rooms), adults only (which simply means no children, nothing else). Occupancy during late February/early March was about 80%, with Italians being the most numerous peoples (nearly half). Americans, Canadians, Germans, and some others. If that matters to you (recognizing that each culture behaves a certain way, mind you). But everyone got along 'swimmingly'. I could detect no 'wear and tear' that you might expect of a place after two years - it was still pristine and smart in all respects. The staff are friendly but in no way unctuous. Occasionally - such as the pool bar or smoothie bar on the beach - you run into staff who are perhaps overworked and a little more curt than those in the restaurants. No one has their hand out but all appreciate a tip if their service warrants such (have some small denomination pesos (20s, 50s, 100s) available and don't automatically think everyone appreciates US dollars). I generally only tipped at dinner, which was table service, and the valet with suitcases. Rooms are clean, well appointed, and well stocked. Except for the 3rd floor (I think, never having stayed on the 3rd floor) the rooms are all 'dark', with the vegetation off the balconies blocking most sunlight (and anyone from seeing you on your balcony). Try to get a 3rd floor room - we had no luck in our two stays, but we were upgraded each time to a Privileged room (they're just a little nicer). Restaurants are all great, depending on your taste, of course. The nicest venues are those in the open (the Asian, Tapas and Steak restaurants). They are also the most popular but I saw no line ups (I did in 2017, but that was Easter). People tend to eat beginning at 19:30 to 20:00. Funnily enough, the restaurant we enjoyed the most in 2017 (the Steak restaurant in the pool pavilion) was the one we liked the least this time. Too American in style and unimaginative in menu. The Tapas was our favourite - great food, well served and the sharing aspect a nice touch. All restaurants were good though. You will be approached by some staff wearing white shirts displaying 'Maravillosa', Catalonia's premier travel club. They seem to double as concierge as well (so they say). It's up to you if you want to devote the hour they request to hear the detailed pitch (we did not, and I recommend you read into this before committing to anything). Once you politely decline (or accept, I suppose), they will leave you alone but still assist you in any way they can (so they say). The sole blip in an otherwise perfect week was when the hotel's wireless, which had been adequate in rooms and even around the pool, went down the last evening and the next morning, when we departed. Only the lobby had access, and poor at that, so communicating with home, airlines (i.e. check-in), etc was difficult. No one seemed to be doing much about it except "the technicians were working on it". Well, they worked for about 16 hours straight with no success by the time we left. But, let me put things this way - we had a week of 30 C weather with no rain and few clouds. The pool was lovely (the ocean less so due to the seaweed). Plenty to drink and eat, and comfortable and relaxing surroundings. It was the paradise we had hoped for. One day I hope to have a third review of this resort to post.

JUST GOT BACK FROM OUR 15TH VISIT TO CATALONIA!!!

My husband Joe and I just got back from our 15th visit to The Catalonia Royal Tulum, and it was our best visit yet! The CRT is an adults only resort. Joe and I were greeted by two of the sweetest people ever, Miguel from Guest Services and Amayalli the Concierge! They both checked in with us several times during our 12 day stay and offered to help with whatever we needed! We come back to the Catalonia for so many reasons and the people who work there is the biggest reason. And of course we LOVE the way the resort is layed out, the gorgeous turquoise water, the white sand, the palm trees and let me not forget, the FOOD! There are so many restaurants to go to and you will never be without glorious food choices! There is a great buffet for breakfast and dinner in the lobby and then at lunch there is a "to-die-for" buffet (The LaPalapa) at the beach! Then there is a killer Italian restaurant, a charming Asian outdoor restaurant, a Mexican, Tapas and Beef/Seafood Grill! And I don't want to forget the Sorrento for lunch or B-Loved, which is a little health oriented restaurant on the beach! You can sit around a beautiful pool and participate in lots of daily activities or sit near the beach. Most importantly I want to thank our precious waiters Amado, Gabriell (from the Grill), Carlos, Alejandro (both from the LaSelva & LaPalapa), Luis from Toscana, and the wonderful hostesses Elizabeth, Esther, Faviola, Gabriella (from BeLoved) & Quetzabel. We also appreciate the supervisors Aida and Eduardo! We also really enjoyed Daniel who worked in building 6!! All of them are precious, kind and so service oriented! We have already made airplane reservations to return next March! We look forward to returning home in March!
