Second visit
PHYLLIS K.

We visited this resort many years ago and I have always wanted to go back. I was not disappointed. We were there over Christmas. They put on an excellent Christmas Eve dinner tha t started out at one of the a la carts with wonderful appitizers & drinks. The staff was always very friendly. We always had great service in the buffet for breakfast & lunch. We ate at the Italian twice and the steakhouse twice. We obviously liked it as we went back. We didnt do the Asian or the Mexican. The only negative was the weather & that is not a fault of the resort. We spent Christmas in Mexico two other times and it was much warmer. The beach & ocean were beautiful. The pool is very nice but the water was too cold to get in. Again no fault of the resort. We would definitely return.

3rd Trip-Looking Forward to Next One

As always this resort did not disappoint us. It is one of the few places we vacation that has an excellent beach (most importantly), excellent staff, excellent food and excellent service. A little disappointed that paddle boards were not available as they are waiting on new paddles as original ones broken. Cost is very reasonable for a week of fun and relaxation. Looking forward to our next visit in March 2019.

4th Catalonia Royal Tulum Stay

Had another great stay at the Catalonia Royal Tulum in Xpu Ha. Overall ride down from the airport, check-in, staff support, massage, food, pool were absolutley wonderful. Beach had some seaweed issues, but my brother and I got in some great snorkeling. Didn't hang around the bars much, drinks at the pool and beach were always great. Didn't do much of the entertainment, but listened to a couple of musicians and a mariachi band as well, all very good. CRT has been a great trip for my wife and I over the years. Have recommended it to others.. . .

Beautiful scenery, lack of service and air conditioning.

One thing missing from their website and other reviews is the lack of air conditioning in the restaurants. My husband was so overheated one night, he couldn't even eat dinner. He had to go back to the room to cool down. The staff did not provide the service I expected for the rating of the hotel, and the cost. While the grounds are immaculate, I cannot give such high praise to the servers. At times a drink would come in 5 minutes, or 15. Often, the alcohol requested wasn't given (we got a bottom shelf alcohol the majority of the time). When we asked what beer they had, they said Corona. We found out on day 3/5 that they also serve Negro Modelo, which is a much higher quality of beer. I didn't appreciate the lies or watered down alcohol. The facilities and foliage are beautiful, but the lack of friendliness and attentive service ruined it.

A wonderful getaway

I was with a group of five family members and friends. We had a wonderful time. The food was outstanding, fresh, and varied in interesting and exciting ways from restaurant to restaurant. Unlike other resorts, and especially cruise ships, you actually feel like you're at a different restaurant or bar with each one. As a non-spanish speaker, I generally felt well accommodated. There were two or three instances where I was skipped in line at the bar, but I'll chalk these up to my inability to assert myself in Spanish. However, these were really the only service-related issues, and they were by far less inconvenient compared to other hotel stays in other countries. The room was spotless, and the shower had a refreshing rain-style head with separate spray handle. The bed was clean and comfortable.

First time at an all-inclusive
DAVID T.

The Catalonia was a great low key resort. The food was excellent, I would say better than a cruise. The beach was very nice but a lot of seaweed would gather and be in the way in the afternoon. At one point you couldnt even swim. That was only one afternoon out of 5 though. The service was generally very good. We had some issues with getting drinks at the bars as we would be ignored for Spanish speaking guests. We even walked away twice and went somewhere else. The grounds are beautiful, and so is all of the wildlife. The Coatjis were one of my favorite animals to see! The biggest issue we had was the lack of AC. Only the rooms had AC, the spa and the gym. The few indoor restaurants often had little or no AC. We sweat through the whole meal at the Italian restaurant. I wasnt expecting that and didnt remember reading it in any other reviews. We did go in July when Im guessing its hotter, so this might not be an issue in cooler months. Other than that I am very happy with the resort and the vacation and I definitely recommend it!

Excellent hotel across the board. Only complaint is that the pool bar is too close to the beach. The loud music and entertainment makes it difficult to enjoy relaxing and listening to the ocean waves at night. The crowd here skewed young while we were there. Excellent staff/food/rooms/etc.

This hotel was amazing. Although it is one of the smaller resorts it was a big hit with me and my husband. Start to Finish the food, staff, activities and entertainment spot on. The two trips we scheduled were wonderful as well. Could not have asked for a better time. We will be returning next year. Thank You Marta for everything:)

Privilege-through Apple is a rip off

Upgraded to Privileged which only gets you access to 1 restaurant which has the same menu for ever meal. The alcohol is low grade only "exclusive" members get better quality which is not high end either. Example-High end is Jack Daniels? The staff was amazing. Apple needs to also disclose there is an environmental fee at checkout which wasn't a lot of money but should be mentioned. Overall good hotel I'm more disappointed with Apple not disclosing information.

$3,500 - 30th Wedding Anniversary Vacation Disaster 2018

This was my husband and I's first trip to Mexico, out of the country, to the caribbean islands, The Ocean. Our first day at the resort we were absolutely heartbroken when we seen the ocean and sea grass! It was 5-6 feet deep along the entire resort, it stunk, it had flies, they never did clean it up, it was there the entire time. We were unable to even walk in the ocean, let alone swim or snorkel. I understand its nature, but why were we not warned of this situation? Given the option to change locations? Then the tropical storm, Alberto, Formed right over our resort! Double Red Flags were out on the beach (which means closed!) everyday we were there the surf was so strong and windy. It rained, everyday, most of the day, for 5 out of our 6 nights. The resort dinner buffet was closed the entire time as well, leaving you with only alacarte choices, and they were awful. No american food at all. The food that was suppose to be served hot, was always cold, or lukewarm, and then the cold food was HOT or lukewarm. We had stomach issues the whole time we were there, along with several other travelers. This resort leaves alot to be desired. And if it rains, there is absolutely nothing to do! Only had 1 english TV channel in our room CNN! I feel like Apple lead me to believe this was a very strong 4.8 star resort with a beautiful beach, which it was anything but that. I would never return.

Romantic Getaway with my wife

Likes: The staff was helpful, pleasant, and very friendly. The room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The pool and beach area were excellent. The spa's service, and treatment was excellent. Dislikes: The food was average or below average at all the restaurants with the exception of the breakfast buffet. The room service twilight food choices were abysmal (sandwich or hotdog) and un-eatable. Extreme dislike: We payed for the romantic dinner package upgrade at the hotel. My wife and I were really excited about it but when we actually went to the dinner we received the worst culinary experience ever. Besides the salad, which was excellent, the bruschetta course was below average in taste, the land & sea course was tasteless and dry, and the dessert was un-eatable. They did not even put up any romantic ambiance; no candles, torches, flowers, nothing; Just a bright LED light. The server did an excellent job considering the horrible quality of the food.

My husband & I visited this resort in November 10-17, 2018 fir a well deserved relaxation, fun in the sun time! This hotel/resort is really nice & large. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy not having an ocean view room, but didn’t end up bothering me as I was at the pool or beach anyways. The room was large, clean & well stocked. I left a larger tip day one as I wanted extra bottled water as I was working out while I was there. The pool area is nice & has lots of chairs. I did go reserve my chair after the gym, around 7:30am, but I’m a true sun bunny, but there are plenty of chairs, loungers & hammocks to be had & beach beds too. The food in the restaurants was OK, the portions are small. The buffet was GOOD & varied. The drinks were OK, at times I wondered if there was even alcohol in it. The daytime activities were ok, nighttime was the usual Mexican night, etc. I did enjoy the water dance show, that was my favourite. The pizza was really good & the daytime bbq was good too, but I just asked to have my hamburger cooked well done. The water aerobics was fun! The resort is very clean. I loved the resident cat & the coati’s that run around, but don’t feed them! The beach is stunning, the gorgeous clear blue water & the fine sand, ❤️ it‼️ Not sure I’d go back to this resort again as I’d like a place that has teppanyaki & a bit more variety & I HATED the sales pitches on a daily basis. I would next time ask them not to bother me again on my trip. But it is a very nice adult only resort & I would recommend it.

Hello, we just got back from our first ever adult's only resort. The shuttle from the airport to the hotel was one hour and fifteen minutes. We paid to stay in a Privileged room, all these rooms have been refurbished .This gets you discounts through out the resort like the spa , and Bloved Privileged restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast we had there was lovely down by the beach. Our favorite Ala Carte restaurants were the Italian and the Steak Restaurant. They do have one great big pool that was a little chilly. Walking up and down the beach each direction was really nice,we loved going in the ocean two to three times a day with our snorkeling equipment. We saw lots of fish including a six foot Barracuda and over ten sting rays. We missed to see any turtles. The time share people there dressed in white never came up and bothered us, they completely stayed away. They do have a really nice big hottub outside near the Bloved Restaurant, and right beside that is where you can get an outside massage looking over the beach. Best deal was $50US FOR 50 minutes, or if you head down to the beach and turn right walk five minutes to where you see tis white tent where the locals will give you a massage for $35US for one hour. This is a much smaller resort for adults only that was our first try, and we did enjoy it very much and recommend to all. There are lovely Coati animals that resemble racoons for you to enjoy. The main switch in the rooms that operate all the lights also activate the ceiling fan over the bed. But if you want it on at night, you also have to have one of the ceiling lights on as well. They really need to have a separate switch for both, another complaint is the pillows they give you to sleep on because they resemble half the length what we use at home and the shape is a small marshmellow very difficult to sleep on.. Next vacation we might try a different adults only resort or one that offers a nice adults only section and is also under an hour to get to from the airport. We wish everyone a great travel experience !!!!!!!!!!!

GREAT GETAWAY!

This was the second time we had been to a Catalonia resort and our first time at an adult only. It was excellent, the staff were great, very helpful and entertaining. There was always something to do and the entertainment crew were a lot of fun. Shows at night were very entertaining. We went to Rauxa show (didn't get the meal) the show was a lot of fun and the little appys they provided were just right. In the evening there was a musician in the main lobby, he did an excellent job playing the oldies. The room was well appointed. Our housekeepers did a great job. The bed was a little soft for our liking but that's a personal preference. We like the firmer mattress. Beach was small but nice. On the first couple of days the staff were working very hard as the seaweed was quite substantial. By the third day you wouldn't even have known there was any seaweed. Pool was very nice and clean and the waiters did a good job keeping me from getting thirsty. Restaurants, we went to them all. It was three way tie for the steak house, italian and asian. The mexican restaurant was okay but not great compared to the others. The buffet always seemed to have a good variety. Overall, food was good. The resort was always clean. Smoking was very minimal. We've been to other resorts where the smoking was obnoxious. Not the case here. Overall, very happy with the resort and will be attending again.

Finally got round to writing this review after staying at CRT from 26 November to 10 December 2018. This was our third visit here and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We were personally greeted on arrival by the General Manager Arely and Guest Manager Miguel, which was a good start to our holiday (after the fiasco at Cancun airport) The hotel’s uneque jungle setting with its resident wildlife creates a calm relaxed and uncrowded atmosphere while walking up to the lobby or down to the pool and beach from the six habitation blocks. The beach for us is the hotels crowning glory and although there was a lot of seaweed washing up every day this year (all over the Caribbean) the beach guys worked tirelessly keeping the area in front of the hotel clear, however it seemed to give the beach a whole new dimension of beauty. We upgraded to Privileged, and for us it is well worth it. We didn’t on our first visit and that was fine, but we did last year and this time. It’s a personal thing, but we felt that once we did upgrade there was no going back. Having access to the BLoved restaurant and bar, set right on the beach for a la Carte breakfast, lunch and dinner was worth in itself. The food quality and ambience in all the other restaurants is of a good quality. The only fail we had was the snack/pizza lunchtime restaurant where on two occasions we were asked to come back in 20 minutes. The guy working in there seemed to be on his own and simply couldn’t cope. More staff required? Yes the rooms are a little tired, but they are clean, spacious, super comfy beds and lovely bathroom with clean soft towels. The area around the pool could do with re-paving in an ideal world but overall these are just small picky observations. The amazing staff here are the hotels greatest asset however and the level of service from every member of the team throughout the resort was amazing (except the staff selling Catalonia’s version of timeshare, they were just annoying) Special mention for Amado, Gabriela, Maria Rosario, Ricky, Estoban, Juan, Julio, Roberto, Salvador and Dalibeth who for us just took the service to an extra level. Thank you to you all for making our holiday so special! We have become quite attached to this hotel and staff, and with repeat guests making up on average 40% we’re certainly not the only ones. Met a couple who were on their thirteenth visit! If you want entertaining all day and partying all night don’t bother coming here. If you want a relaxing holiday in a great friendly adults only hotel with fantastic service with quality food and drink set on an amazing beach, this could be the place for you. We will be returning this year and can’t wait! Thank you CRT.
