My husband and I went for our honeymoon and brought a few friends along. I read the reviews before I left and crossed my fingers. I've been to at least 20-25 resorts over the years on all different Islands. I've been to the best of the best and worst of the worst so I didn't know what to expect with this place. I'll start by saying that for the price...it's well worth it. If you want a week of lots of eating, drinking and tanning...this is your vacation.
The rooms are a little bit run down. We had to change rooms because our room STUNK of mold and the AC didn't work. The front desk was more than helpful in changing our room. Even offered us a discounted upgrade which we decided against. We just wanted a clean room with working AC. I had them take us to see the room before we made the switch to make sure it didn't smell. The first two smelled of mold also, must be just the moisture in the climate. We ended up in a room that smelled fresh and the AC was cranking!! So we were happy with the room for the week.
If you want to be closer to the lobby and main pool, ask for buildings 46, 44, 42 or 40. If you want to be closer to the beach (which sucks) but the rooms are a little bit newer, choose buildings 38 and below.
The staff was INCREDIBLE. Could be because my husband is an extremely generous tipper but regardless every single staff member was amazingly attentive, helpful and kind.
The alcohol...most of it tasted watered down and weak. Our favorite drink was the mojito. It was the strongest and the tastiest. The only beer they have is their national beer "presidente" which tastes like a verrrrrrry light coors light or bud light mixed with water. Not our favorite. We were dying for a corona or heineken all week.
The food...the restaurant right in the lobby has the best food out of all of the restaurants in the entire resort. They change the menu every day for lunch. The dinner menu is about the same every day with variations in the chef specials. If you want a good steak, avoid the steakhouse. Go to the lobby restaurant. Their steak is a million times better than the steakhouse. Tapas was kind of sucky...the food wasn't fantastic. It is very romantic and pretty inside though. Very low key. The dominican restaurant, Yuca, was pretty good. Wasn't our favorite but it was decent. The pizza restaurant by the main pool was good. The calzones were amazing. The snack bar by the beach was kind of sucky. Saving the worst for last...
Hibachi. So it was fun, exciting, and delicious...but it left 3 out of 6 people in our party SICK. Beyond sick. I ate the chicken hibachi and was in the bathroom about 20 mins after we ate, violently ill, until 1pm the next day. To the point where I thought I might go go the hospital. Two other people I was with also got very sick that night. So maybe avoid that one.
Entertainment...the beach parties are great!! The DJs are fantastic and if you have a good group to go with, it is a lot of fun. The disco is open til 2am. It's a cool spot. Fun for a night that you feel like really going out and partying.
Excursions...Don't waste your time going on the 4 hour snorkeling trip that you "swim with the sharks" and "pet the stingrays". There were 2 nurse sharks in a netted aquarium in the middle of the ocean and we held 1 stingray for about 4 seconds for a picture that costs $15. The Dune Buggie excursion...AWESOME!!! The swimming in the cave was incredible.
**Dress code...women can basically wear anything. You can probably get into the restaurants in your bathrobe. For some reason, they are SUPER strict about the dress code for men. Men have to wear pants and close toed shoes for dinner to basically every single restaurant which is kind of annoying because the restaurants aren't super fancy and classy. My husband wanted to wear shorts and feel comfortable in the 90 degree weather and he had to wear pants every single night.
Wifi..don't expect any of it. It sucks. Some days you'll get it and some days you won't. They do have computers in the lobby to check your email and stuff though.
The beach is the last thing I wanted to touch on because it's hardly worth discussing. It's terrible. Does not look like the beach they post on their website. It's small and smelly with tons of seaweed. Doesn't even look like a tropical beach. We stayed by the pool all week.
Overall, the stay was great. It was relaxing, fun and pleasant. Would I go back? Probably not. But I don't have any MAJOR complaints. Like I said in the beginning, it's worth it for the money.
Anniversary get away.

The food was great, the only downside is the beach was full of seaweed so we didn't go in, but the pool and my favorite bar tender Carlos was awesome.

I was amazed how absolutely beautiful the grounds were at this hotel. I have stayed at a few all inclusives before, so I feel that I have something to compare it to. The hotel was nice also. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the extremely pungent musty smell of our upgraded room. The first couple of days, it was overwhelming, but as the week went on the smell dissipated as we ran the ceiling fan 24 hrs a day. I was surprised that there was not a dehumidifier in the room like in other Catalonia resorts I have stayed at. No chance of anything drying in there. However, EVERYTHING else the resort had to offer was amazing! The staff was extremely warm, welcoming and catered to your every need. The food was very good and I always found something I liked. There was 24 hr room service, which I truly loved! The fresh fruits and juices were my favorite. I am not a big drinker, but tried my fair share of all the frozen drinks which were wonderful. I especially liked swimming over to get it. This resort is a lot quieter than the sister resort next door. The majority of the guests were couples. I would recommend this lovely resort for those who want quiet time together, but not so much for families with older children. If you like a pristine Caribbean beach, avoid the summer months as the seaweed heavily coated the shore line. The staff really tried their best to remove it. One last thing....the wi-fi was completely unreliable. Sometimes it worked, more often it would not.

I'm sincerely confused as to how this resort got such good ratings. We had to switch rooms twice because the air condition was not working and the other one has no hot water. The rooms were filthy and the entire resort had the illusion of luxury. If you need something delivered to your room like towels, prepare to wait a full day for it after talking to someone with the worst attitude. They bring street dealers to the resort with is fine in small doses but not when you're constantly getting heckled. Someone there was constantly trying to sell you something. Not relaxing at all! The people working there acted like they were doing you a favor bringing you water. The restaurant service was utterly horrendous. They say tip is included but the workers there will tell you to tip so don't be fooled.
The beach was filled with seaweed and smelled disgusting.
The rooms were both dirty and not cleaned well at all. We found old wrappers in the covers!
Better bring your own toilet paper because once it's gone, you won't see anything to wipe your toosh. The showers were filthy so you won't even feel clean then. They do not wash the sheets! Mine had makeup on them! And it wasn't mine! Bring your own beach towels because they don't wash them, only dry.
Warning!!! Good reviews are crud honestly, you will regret it
Lackluster Vacation!! Do not book this resort!!!

My husband and I stayed at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro from 7/18--25/2015. I've had time to come home and process the entire experience. On a whole, I would say that the resort is 2.5 stars at best, and I'm probably being generous with that rating. Be prepared to speak Spanish during the majority of your stay.
We stayed in a private villa with the pool, which is probably the only reason why our stay was even bearable.
Where should I begin? Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by a "concierge" who's sole goal was to get us to purchase a timeshare with the resort. Avoid the men in the white button down shirts! We were able to finally decline the sales pitch, but the couple we traveled with wasn't so lucky. They were held captive for hours!!!
There were rolling blackouts the first night and our safe was broken upon arrival. The suite was in need of a serious paint job and most of the fixtures were seriously dated and broken. While the space was large, it had its issues. When using the shower, the water traveled all the way into the hallway. There were ants all over the vanity the entire stay. The toilets were very low, which might not seem like something to note, but when the lackluster food gives you food poisoning (which is a certainty) you will want to be comfortable. My digestive system is still recovering! This is after only drinking and brushing my teeth with bottled water.
I have never been to a resort where you call an extension for housekeeping, front desk, etc. and no one picks up the phone. It took 30-40 minutes for room service to show up after calling 2-3 times. While the housekeeping staff was pleasant, they did not speak English and often failed to properly restock the refrigerator and towels.
THERE IS NO WIFI. They will tell you the opposite, but that's a lie. You may be able to catch a signal in the lobby, but it's a crap shoot. The customer service in the restaurants is okay. As other reviews have mentioned, the food is better on the other side. We traveled there often.
I didn't bother going to beach. Our travel companions told us about the seaweed issues. The plants by our pool were watered with septic water, so it smelled like poop for the first couple hours. Disgusting.
I suppose it could have been worse. The other couple we knew didn't have hot water at all during their stay.
The good points of the stay? The bed was very comfortable, the royal side is quiet, sunbathing at our private pool, the coffee drinks at the piano bar and the food at the Asian Bistro/Pizza spot by the pool, and the total relaxation package at the spa. That's it.
I would not suggest this place to a friend and I will not be back.
