This was our second trip here and enjoyed it as much the second time as the first. The staff was just as friendly as last year. We ran into trouble the last day before checkout with our door's lock. But it was fixed in a timely manner. And while we waited for it to be repaired they nicely went a got a chair for me to sit on while I waited. The only complaint i have is the beach bar played the same CD the whole week. I realize that we all have different tastes in music but it would have been nice to have a little variety. We heard a few people ask to have something different maybe even some Caribbean music and they were told it is what it is. So next year we bring our own music. But we will be back. More>

THE GOOD: You will travel far to find people who will work harder to make their guests happy. At check-in the front desk staff were quick (which was good at it took us 24 hours to get there) and knowledgeable. They explained the essentials and had us moving along fast. The bellmen took us to our rooms and took care of the luggage. The room was large and spacious. (a few comments in another section though). We were offered an upgrade to a suite with a pool for $1500 USD for the 9 nights we were there. Our friends did this. Not sure it was worth it unless you really love a little splash pool. We are beach people so it wasn't an option we went for. Something you can look at and decide for yourself. Our room was always cleaned really well and our housekeeper did all she could to make us happy. We tipped daily and also brought some fun little gifts to add with it from Canada. She appreciated it and even our evening turndown with chocolates was nice. Restaurants: When you stay at the Royal you have access to the other side (Catalonia Bavaro) restaurants as well. This is an area they excel at. We enjoyed almost all of our food. The buffet restaurant that we ate at the first night was busy but lots of food and lots of stations that cook to your desire. (wok, pasta, meat etc). The Pizza restaurant and Thai restaurant were delicious. If you get served by Riley, you will be taken care of like you're family. He even remembered our drink preferences which was amazing because we were a group! Thanks Riley! The Thalasa for breakfast was good and it turns into an a la carte at night. Delicious as well. Do take in the Italian on the other side too. The Spanish Tapas also very good. One big kudos to this place is that you do not need reservations. If you've ever been to resorts before, often people make reservations and never show but you can't get into the restaurant you want. Well not here. They do it perfect. If you go to the restaurant and they have space, you're in! Loved this a lot! The bars were great. Right on the beach or the Piano Bar (yummy martini's) or over on the Bavaro side - were always good! Great service, great drinks and just nice environments. They also opened a new area on the Royal side and we loved it. Lots of couches and space for us all to kick back after dinner and enjoy conversations. There is a little shopping area here that has a drug store and mini mart and some gift shops. We liked it. If you go up the beach there is a little vendor area. Their prices were MORE than in the gift shops so be careful. LOL. You don't see that often. We did a romantic dinner on the beach and it was SUPER delicious. We had such a nice time and were even surprised when the resort photographer showed up to help capture the moment. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend that anyone do this. It was just a lovely evening. The staff here keep the grounds clean and tidied up. Even on the beach! Some previous reviews complained about seaweed on the beach. They now have a seaweed barrier that takes care of that so it wasn't an issue for us at all. Lots of beach chairs and staff to serve drinks. One thing we noticed that bothered us... some people don't tip! If you can afford a trip, you can afford to tip these incredibly hard working people. Many of their jobs are paid based on the fact that they receive tips. They also must share tips with others. (say in the restaurants or servers etc). We tip for good service and there was lots of it. Do help these people take care of their families and give a gratuity. Sometimes we tipped extra when we saw a server working hard and ignorant people walking away without leaving a few bucks. THE BAD: Oh dear.... there were a few things they could correct that would up the rating we could give them. First of all... they are always out of towels on the beach, by the pool and in your rooms. It is beyond unacceptable that we couldn't get a towel at the beach several days running when we paid thousands of dollars per person to be there. And in our rooms - only had a full set of towels 2 days out of 9. One day had none and had to call front desk and beg. Bad bad bad Second....spruce up the rooms. They are so spacious but need a good cleaning. Curtains were not clean. The couch and chairs need a good steam cleaning. Not even replacing. Just cleaning. Another bad.... The only other bad we found was their casino. Oh ugh. We played the slots for a bit and usually play table games but the staff looked so angry we didn't bother. They actually looked hostile and not inviting at all. Too bad. We usually enjoy a few trips to the casino. We didn't go back. Found other places to do this that we had more fun at. THE UGLY... Okay folks...a few things you need to be aware of before you book this resort. First.... when you check in they give your welcome package to vacation membership sales people and after traveling for yours you will be bombarded to buy a vacation membership. Are you kidding me? We had been up for 36 hours and traveling for 24 of those so we demanded that they take us to our rooms. It wouldn't be so bad if it ended there. But NO. It didn't. Gawd help us. They are in the lobby all the time and harass you every time you go to the Thalasa Restaurant or Piano Bar or just go through the lobby. We finally found ways around going through the lobby and their endless harassment. it just didn't stop. Even if I ever considered a vacation membership it would never be this place because of their bullying and harassment. It was beyond acceptable and has made it that we wouldn't vacation there again. Also in the ugly category would be that their air conditioning doesn't work. We are world travellers and this is the first place that the humidity in the room was MORE than outside. Our room was always damp and smelled of musty air. We tried putting drier sheets in the vents as others recommended but that didn't help it. We have never been to a resort that didn't have proper air conditioning before this one. We checked with the others in our group thinking it was just our room but no, it was theirs too. Your clothing will all be damp (except that which you put out on the clothing rack on the patio). This was a big disappointment and a huge area for improvement for this resort. So would we recommend this resort.... yes and no. It is a mid-range resort. It isn't a Paradisus or Iberostar that we've stayed at before but it isn't low end either. We did have a good time as a group and made lots of memories. There are lots of 'goods' about this place and if you can live the 'bads and the uglys' I've listed, then go for it. The staff will work super hard for you to have an amazing time. More>

We have been to the Dominican 4 times all at different resorts searching for "the one" to come back to every year, and this was it! Everything we wish for in a tropical resort was here. The food was delicious in every restaurant and meals made on the beach were fun and authentic Dominican cuisine. The grounds were impeccable and well manicured. Only 2 days had too much seaweed on the beach as there was a storm at sea. The sand is soft and like sugar,. This this resort had plenty of beach chairs, beds and even a swing bed. The pool was always clean and also had plenty of loungers with pool side service from the bar. The bars had the friendliest bartenders who remembered your drinks and it was top shelf liquor. The rooms were spacious although getting enough towels was hit and miss. I had a massage on th beach and highly recommend it ! We were originally booked for the Bavaro family resort on the same grounds but were upgraded to the Royal at check in. Thank goodness for that, because the other side with families was a mad house and I think it was over sold which is why several couples were upgraded to the Royal couples side. It was the best thing to happen to us ! We traveled with 2 adults and 2 19 year old girls and they accommodated our wishes and roomed us side by side. We will definitely be back to this resort and plan on bringing more family next time. We miss all the friends we made that work there like Wilfran and Jhan in activities and Eduardo in the bar. My husband and I have been going to the Dominican Republic since the year 2000. After visiting other resorts including Catalonia Bavaro, we found out about their next door sister resort Royal Catalonia, it's an adult only resort that has been a place of relaxation and retreat for us. It's only 15 minutes away from the airport and the beach is beautiful, white sand and no waves which for me is a plus. My little corner in the world where I find peace and happiness once a year, sometimes more. Throughout the years this resort has evolutionized to what it is today, it holds five restaurants, room service, yoga classes at the beach, a swimm up bar pool and an infinity pool by the beach, in addition to the five restaurants there are also four more theme restaurants on the Catalonia Bavaro side which you are welcome to visit without reservations. They have hired a Beach Concierge, his name is Wilfran (great young man) he holds cocktail classes and Spanish lessons in the afternoons. On Dominican day they cook a huge pot of paella in front of you while you wait and of course fresh sangria to accompany it. They recently remodeled the Beach Bar, I was impressed with not only this but they added a sushi bar as well right in it. Every beach chair at the beach is new and they added a padded mat with a head rest. I had the pleasure to meet the new food manager, his name is Altagracia, he has an incredible sense of humor, the employees love him also the Beverage/Bar manager his name is Reinaldo, he is originally from Cuba, also has a great sense of humor and they are both constantly visiting the different bars and restaurants overseeing the operation. The guys at the front desk are very pleasant and easy to deal with, speak several languages and are very helpful. We have been told that in the dinningroom if you have dietary needs even if you don't see it to please ask for it. This year my husband wasn't feeling well and I asked to speak with the head waiter and asked if they could make grilled chicken breast with mash potatoes and they happily complied. If I had to say something negative about the resort it would be the music at the beach bar, it's kind of monotonous and not what I expect to hear when I'm in the Dominican Republic. I want to mention that just because it's an adults only place it's not an older crowd, there are young couples and guests from all over the world. In my opinion you can find more luxurious adult only places in Punta Cana, we made that mistake last year and I was miserable, the beach was terrible. At Royal Catalonia Bavaro you can find it all! Everything from the service to the cleanliness of the room was great. Restaurants were all good, with an nice variety. It is worth upgrading to the Royal side if you don't have kids or want a more laid back atmosphere. More>
