We stayed at the Adults only section. So rooms and such are for that area only unless otherwise observed Rooms - Dated - Not sure if all have it or not, but there is a spa style tub for two in the room outside the bathroom right next to the bed. Placing is quite awkward - Bathroom is small and has no exhaust fan. Shower area is almost fully enclosed with no lighting and at times water pressure gets really low because each “villa” (10+ rooms) is supplied by a water tank. When it runs low, pressure drops. It picks up again but only much later. Pool - two pools - One is small and surrounded by Villas and restaurants. This one has the swim up bar. Gets crowded and noisy. Seats and cabanas around this gets filled quickly. The pool activities are held here as well - Second “infinity” pool has limited shade. No swim up bar but the restaurant bar is nearby - People hog the seating all day. They leave their towels on the chaise lounges that have umbrellas and also on the cabanas. Folks go out at 6am or so to leave the towels out and so normal people keep an eye out for vacancies sharper than dealhunters on Black Friday. Just saying. Restaurants - Thalassa: main dining area - Good breakfast - Ok lunch - Dinner is highly iffy. Dress code applies for dinner - Tao Kat: Asian - Limited menu but best food and service - Tapas: fancy menu. Dress code. Not many vegetarian or chicken options - Sea Breeze (near the Infinity pool): quite nice for lunch. Fixed menu though. No dress code. Food quality - The fruit and fruit juices are fresh. - The seafood is ok which was surprising because it is on the Caribbean. I expected better quality and a bigger variety of choices. Hotel in general: - staff are friendly and helpful. English is a struggle at times - Beach area is limited but even at the beginning of July Seaweed is a problem. The smell of it while not overwhelming was present more often than not - Water within the small cordoned off area was brown with dead seaweed. Some folks were in the water but we opted not to. - If you must have a sea bath, make arrangements to get to Macao Beach. Water does not have any seaweed but there are a whole lot of vendors. - There is a lot of seating near the beach at the hotel. Off to a corner are two suspended “beds” which are very comfortable for a quiet read or nap - The regular/family area has more restaurants. Some have dress code but the buffet does not. Variety is not ridiculous but generally there will be at least one great dish

We stayed for a week at this resort and we've previously stayed in a hotel of the same grade elsewhere. All I can say is that there is a lot of room for improvement. That being said, all of the wait staff from the restaurants have been very attentive and helpful, I hope people would leave tips more often to these people because they really work hard to make sure we are all comfortable. Arrival: they didn't have our reservation in their system, however, it was resolved pretty quickly as they told us to go and enjoy lunch first while they sort it out. The part that really bugged me was the sales tactics the concierge and other ppl wondering around the lobby are trying to employ once you arrive. They come and welcome you as you walk away from the front desk, introduce themselves and then tell you that they have a gift for all of their guests as it is the hotel's 70th anniversary. They ask you if you want to go and get the gift with them and then try to sign you up for some draw and a VIP breakfast and presentation for the next morning with a changed narrative that you will get your gift tomorrow. They tell you to bring an ID and credit card for the seminar. It sounded sketchy so we bailed. However, it was unpleasant as we are here to relax and not being harassed by sales ppl. Ground: The ground was very beautiful and pretty well maintained. Room: very big room that looks fairly recently renovated with a tub and a small washroom. Upon close inspection, I am not sure if the room was cleaned properly. There were stains on the bedsheet, the tub was dusty, the shower looked somewhat unclean, the mini bar has barely anything in it. We found some more concerning issues like the peephole on the door was loose, there were some damage on the door frame that looked like as if someone forced in before, the safe was erroring when I try to put in a passcode. The TV was broken as well. Luckily, our air conditioning worked great. The only complaint is it is quite loud when it activate so it takes a bit of getting use to. Also, there was a power outage for a couple of hours on our second day there.. it was hot and we couldn't shower or use the washroom. Food: We ate at almost all of the restaurants in this resort. In fact, the two resorts are really just one resort with some parts that are reserved exclusively for the adult only guests. So, you can eat at any restaurant on the property. The a la carte restaurants had good choices and the food quality was good. The restaurants on the adult side look newly renovated so it's more modern looking if you care about the atmosphere. Family side seems dated but the food is still good. The buffets are just buffets. It's not bad. Oh! Avoid the fresh juice bar Maloo. I was there once and the server made my juice with juice that was left over from the mixer. Fruits are not refrigerated, lots of flies.... Beach: the beach is beautiful. Long and wide sandy beach with majestic looking palms. There are a lot of seats and even a creperie on the beach for some light snack. The seaweed situation is dire. You can smell the rotting seaweed from afar. If you can ignore the smell, the beach is very enjoyable. If you imagined crystal clear Caribbean water, you will be disappointed. It's not really the hotel's fault but the seaweed makes the water near the shore brown in color and stinks of sulfur. You will have to swim through this sludge for about 300m before seeing some clearer water. We were lucky on one of the days where the water was actually very clear farther from the shore so we got to enjoy it. Pools: very nice pools with clean and warm water. Quite relaxing. I avoided the hot tubs cause some of them looked unclean. Entertainment: the shows every night on the family side are quite low in entertainment value. We never stayed past 5 mins because they were not captivating in any way. There's live music every day on the adult side. That was quite a bit better. Even though there is an activity list everyday, I don't think they are organized well so few participate in them. All in all, we still enjoyed our first visit in Dominican. We tried to not be bothered by the details and had a very relaxing holiday. However, this hotel did not offer the service and the attention to detail that one would expect from a 5 star property. You are probably better off paying less for a 3 star hotel for the experience you get here.

Exceeded our expectations!

Myself and my boyfriend (both aged 24) stayed here 6th September-13tg september. When we arrived at the main hotel reception we were greeted by waiters who served us cocktails... This was a really nice touch. Upon checking in, the receptionist gave us the option to stay at the partner hotel next door (Catalonia Royal Bavaro) free of charge! If you get given this option say yes! We were able to use both of the hotels (they are all on the same resort, and take 2 minutes to walk between). We were then given a golf buggy ride to the other hotel. Our room was beautiful! We had a king size bed, a large bath in the room, a free mini-bar (that was stocked daily by the maids), 24hr room service (also free), and a large shower. We were on the ground floor and our balcony looked out onto the grounds which were beautiful. Between the two hotels there are 3 swimming pools - an infinity pool which is relaxing and very scenic. Another pool had a swim-up bar. This pool was a little noisier as they sometimes had a DJ at the pool, and drinking games (this pool and the infinity pool could only be used by the Royal Bavarois guests). And the other main pool was for all guests. This was the largest and noisiest pool, with entertainment going on all day. The only thing I feel which let this hotel down is the nighttime entertainment. You had a few shows going on over the main hotel, but these were mainly tribute acts which you see at most resorts, bingo, and circus acts. Over the Royal side you had a different instrument played each night, which was a lot more chilled and relaxing. This usually finished by 10pm and there was no further entertainment. They did have a beach party on a Tuesday night which was great fun. Just a shame it was only for one night! They had a small nightclub on the resort but I only ever seen this getting used once during the week we were there, and that was when it was the beach party as everyone went to this nightclub for the after-party. The beach... Stunning apart from the seaweed issue. It does smell quite bad but the staff at the hotel worked relentlessly trying to get rid of it. Plus once you walk out into the sea the seaweed stops. We used kayaks which were free to all hotel guests! The food was great. There was the main buffet and themed restaurants (Italian, steak house, Japanese, vegetarian, Mediterranean and more). The buffet looked onto a very big pond with herons, flamingos and various other birds - we loved this. The staff work so hard on the hotel grounds - and it shows as it is so beautiful. All in all we loved our stay and would definitely come back!!

Overall a great place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Catalonia Royal! We were very impressed with the hospitality and the staff as they were all so friendly and helpful. We mainly hung out at the pool that had the swim up bar during the day as the ocean was a little murky, though they were out there all day cleaning up the seaweed. The food overall was good, some was better than others. We loved Cata Tapa and breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Sea Blue. Only real food disappointment were the "buffalo" chicken wings at the steak house on the family side (they were a weird barbecue and mushy). Every night we walked over to the family side as it was more lively, they had the casino and live shows, and the night club (but it didn't open till 11:00pm so that was too late for me), and a huge bar in the central area. Gotta give a shout out to Eddy at the bartender at the family side. He was the best! The Royal side had a musician that played out on the patio every night which was really nice. Only other con (but still not really a con) was that the pool with the pool bar was kind of deep, the shallowest part was 4'9 so it was a little difficult to stand and hold my drink comfortable - but won't complain, they did have areas on the sides that were shallower but the main area with the bar was deep for me. Room service was prompt, the room was lovely and always well cleaned each day. Only minor issue with the room was the water temperature had a mind of its own - usually wayyy too hot even if it was on the cold setting, so we had to take quick showers. Overall, I would absolutely stay here again!

A place that has such potential but lacked in most things.

My fiancé and I stayed here for 10 days. On arrival we upgraded our room the the privaliged apartment and infinity pool. At first the room was lovely - however the cracks started to show quite quickly. Our air con stopped working a few times, as well as leaked onto our bed. Our upstairs toilet leaked once it rained, the fridge wasn’t cold and lots of the interior needed a re vamp. This is all very disappointing especially when you have paid a lot of money for the room. The restaurants are very hit and miss, we found some of the staff to be so rude. We appreciate that English isn’t their language, but you would presume they would at least speak a little? As soon as they realised we couldn’t speak any Spanish, some would just walk away and ignore us. As the days went on it become quite funny, especially if you requested a spoon and you got given a selection of bread instead. We did read up on the beach being full of seaweed due to the time of year. However nothing can prepare you for the strong smell that hits you in the face as you arrive. You do get used to it, but it never goes. Also be careful of the people knocking at your doors offering you champagne as all they want is money and they will come into your room without being asked. We found the only way of getting anything fixed or corrected we had to go straight to management, as there was absolutely no urgency about anything. Even when we had a power cut and rang to ask for help, nobody arrived. The best part of the trip for us was our couples massage, which involved my fiancé having a VERY intamite massage. We swiftly left and popped into the nearby shop for some supplies only to find my “massage therapist” was actually the check out girl. The place on a whole is beautiful and we did enjoy our stay- we just wish it could have been everything we hoped for. P.s stay away from the chilled red wine and white wine you get with the inclusive package, unless you don’t want to wake up for a week.
