Wished it could have been better

This was our 8th visit to this resort. We have always given this place 5 stars. I only wished I could have done the same this year. This rating makes me sad. Check-in: we were greeted at the door by Juan who was so very happy to see us again. Check in was a breeze. They accommodated our request for a room on the ground floor and the building that we so much enjoy. We were in our room in about 15 minutes. Landscaping: Beautiful!!! Great job to all the workers making this resort a beauty. Housekeeping and room: Great staff! Room was cleaned everyday excepted for once. Our maid must of had the day off. Flowers were placed daily in our room. We didn't have any problem with the AC and had plenty of hot water. Beach: Since we enjoy sitting by the pools we can't say much. We did enjoy a walk on the beach which was clean and had plenty of loungers. The new renovation to the beach bar was fantastic. So relaxing to stop and have a drink. We did notice they only had one bartender when they open at 10 so you do have to wait for a drink. Not a big problem. Piano bar: Great place for a before or after dinner drink. The staff is very attentive making sure you have everything you need. This is the part where my lower rating begins: Pools: Infinity pool has stayed the same. Plenty of seating but if you want shade make sure to get there in the early morning. The Pool Bar had the most changes made to it. You have to get there really early if you want some shade. They do lack that. You can get chairs except one day they did run out but expect to be in the sun. The tiles around the pool are very slippery and we saw numerous people fall. Tiles are also so hot you can't walk on them without shoes. Carlos and Genoveva are fantastic. This resort should never lose them. I do feel sorry for them because since the renovation they now have to work in the full sun. One day (Carlos was on vacation) the resort left Genoveva by herself all day. It was next to impossible to get a drink. We left the pool wary that day. Shame on management for providing more help. Restaurants: Cata Tapa: good food and fantastic staff. Thank you to Emmanuel. Thank you for the flowers and making our dinner enjoyable Sea Blue: Great place for lunch. We were never disappointed. Dinner was good but the beach party was a real disappointment. Food was average to below average. Sorrento Pizza: this used to be one of my favorite places to eat lunch. Pizza and salads are to die for. I don't enjoy sitting in the hot sun. Since the remodeling they took away the thatch roof and replaced it with glass. While you eat you feel like you are baking as well. Tao Cat: Fantastic food. Problem is you have to fight mosquitos while trying to eat. We saw some people leave while others went back to their rooms for bug spray. Thallasa: Breakfast is a wonderful buffet. They have everything you could possibly want. Supper was just okay. We even tried the seafood buffet. Don't bother it's not very good. Thank goodness Joel was there with nice table decorations and great service. We also tried the Yuca, Italian (Edwardo was fantastic) and the Rodeo steak house. They were very, very good. Nice job Luis. Since you took over as manager they are so good and the service is also. Probably better than the Royal side. We ate most of our suppers on the other side. We can tell there is a new management team this year. We do miss the old team. This year management does not interact with the clients to make sure everything is going great. They walk with their head down and never look at you. Please bring back the old management. They had this place running smoothly. I do not expect a reply to this because it seems they only make comments a good reviews. We will be back of course. We love this place and everyone that works there. They have become part of my family. We miss them already. Make sure to bring plenty of singles for tipping. They deserve it! More>

Catalonia Royal Bavaro is worth the time of any couple that wants to enjoy the luxury of each others company. Our trip was awfully soothing and lost of worries. We were truly lost in the heavenly bliss of the sun, waves, and sand. If you're seeking to lose yourself for a few days, this place has it all! More>

Not bad...

We stayed at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro from Friday April 22nd to Friday April 29th. We met many nice guests and had a pleasant time. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate for the first time in 20 years of travelling to the DR. It rained for three days in a row. Fortunately we had booked one of the two story suites with our own private pool so we had a nice place to still sit outside and enjoy ourselves, even during the rain. The service was acceptable but not over the top. The best restaurant was Cata Tapas for dinner and restaurant beside the eternity pool was the best for lunch. The dress code was a bit of a hit or miss. We ate at the Thalassa most evenings and only on two occasions were any men turned away because they were wearing dress shorts. The other nights they had no problem. It depended on which hostess was on because even the servers outside were a bit confused. The food was excellent most of the time. The seafood buffet on Thursday night was not appealing to us at all. If we were to return we would definitely go somewhere else to eat on the Thursday night. Overall, not bad, but we have been to resorts which treated the guests much more regally, especially with the additional amount being spent on the upgrade. More>

Mediocre, but worth a first-time visit

Food at the resort was very good with versatile offerings. Bartenders were scarce and almost invisible. Service from the front desk to housekeeping was subpar. If you asked more than once that was once too many times to ask because most employees did not speak English or care enough to give good service. Kudos to the staff at the Thaalsa Restaurant for making my husband's birthday very special with a cake and singing Happy Birthday. The resort itself is small and it was not until the end of the trip that the sister resort next door was mentioned as being accessible to us. It would have been good service to give us a tour of both properties. Additionally, a valet was not available to take your bags to the lobby upon departure. Kudos to the staff including Paulette at the spa who made it a memorable experience as I am a "self-described" spa-junkie. Worth a quick getaway, not for a long week. Management was unable to resolve any ongoing problems or special requests despite my numerous inquires. More>

A week in "Pure Paradise"

The location of our room was perfect for us. I was a little nervous it would be loud because we were right in front of the pool. When we were in our room we never heard any outside noise. There was a small boutique next door where we could get some sun screen. We also were in a very short stroll of several places to eat or have a cocktail. The room was cleaned everyday to the perfect perfection it was the day we arrived. The staff was very accomadating, and had fantastic personalities, they got to know us always addressed us by name and provided hours of entertainment. The beach was so beautiful, it was well maintained, had so many chairs, beds, or hamocks to choose from. It was the best of sun or shade of a palm tree umbrella. There was always someone to help us find a vacant place to settle and once settled in the sand there was no need to move. Anything you wanted was brought to you by a very attentive staff member.
