Never ever consider Catalonia
STEPHEN D.
Jan 16 2019
This was the absolute worse possible choice for vacation. I would never recommend any part of this resort to anyone. Beach sucked, feel better at lake Erie then at the ocean here. Bare minimal workers speak English, the food holy crap I would not trust feeding my dogs the food, they fail to tell you you need reservations to eat so your stuck eating crap. No drink you order is ever right, and if they make something decent they can't make it again. You can order the same drink 10 times and all 10 will be different. The bed was a rock from the beach is seemed like, the blanket was the seaweed, Lord knows there's more then enough of it. My wife hurt her ankle cause one of the hotel employees were impatient, a security guard, she slipped and the rest of the Vacation it was more then swollen and in pain so we we're limited to acitivities, you'd think the employee would ask if she's okay, nope not here, he said "eh, doctor is 150 American over there" and kept walking. The pools are freezing cold, you think jumping in is refreshing from the warm weather , no it's torture, so you regret it instantly. It's sad when it was our second day and we're calling trying g to get sooner flights home and counting down the days till we left. This place is so boring and nothing to do we were sleeping by 9pm! Oh when we could cause the maids are banging the bins and everything possible all night and all morning. I will never, ever even think of Catalonia or ever even send my worst enemy there. I wouldn't ever return there even if it was free! Unfortunately I had an awesome experience with apple for our honeymoon but this time I am beyond disappointed that who knows if I'll give you my business down the road.

Not a good experience all the way around

The service wasn't the best. Had to switch rooms 2 times because of various issues. The food was the same everynight. The beach was terrible. Lots of rocks, jelly fish, and not very swimmer friendly. Also not very many beach chairs available. Was given a lot of misinformation. Will not ever return to this resort or affiliated resorts.

The rooms, the lobby, the restaurants, the pools, the bars, the beach, all fantastic. The warm, friendly atmosphere made our group feel at home. The food was really good as was the pools...fantastic pools and the service was absolutely without question the best around. Yes, I would definitely recommend this resort.

It was a long waited vacation. After having woken up early and traveled throughout the day, it was nice to walk up to the hotel and have a champagne glass of sweet delicious juice as I checked in. The people at the front desk was super friendly. The downfall was, we really wanted to get to our room, but they had their hotel vacation club people do a 10 minute presentation. We had a wonderful time at Catalonia. We spent most of the time at the pool and snorkeled a little bit, but it was a little difficult to snorkel with all the seaweed that was on the shore. The seaweed covered the beach and also made it smell, but if you could look past that, it was a nice beach.

rooms had tiny bugs in it. A lot of bars were closed after midnight. Pools were warm but it was so hot it felt like sitting in a hot tub in 90 degree weather. Beach was AWFUL full of seaweed. You need vouchers to get into the restaurant yet it's supposed to be all inclusive. No were to walk off the resort and explore. Food was not too bad except one spot. Staff was rude and not accommodating.

This was our first time traveling with Apple vacation. I feel that we were not given all information needed for our trip. For instance, when booking this trip we were under the impression that we would have 1/2 a day when we arrived and sum of the morning for a more relaxed leaving time. Since our resort was an hour a way from the airport, we lost time as we initially were boarded on a minivan waiting in the parking lot for a good 20 minutes to be shuttles lastly to our resort. The shuttle made multiple stops prior to ours. So after a very long travel day, were extremely tired when we finally arrived and were told we had to meet with someone regarding our return shuttle. After checking in and losing an entire day, pools at the resort closed early. UGH!! We were accommodated very nicely to celebrate our anniversary by the resort (a definite plus). The food was not impressive as we did upgrade to the privileged guests. Lastly, were instructed to leave 4 hours early for shuttle and airport entry, another 1/2 a day. We were simply disappointed with Apple as they didn't even mention either scenario. This is their expertise! Something we will have to consider when we decide on our next get away. Sorry apple vacation...... We were really expecting more!

The property is not brand new. The rooms are updated and the grounds are beautiful. The walkways is what gives the age away. The facilities are immaculate, the service great and the food from any restaurant there exceeded my expectations.

All and all you get what you pay for. The rooms where basic, wish they had a mini bar. The grounds are beautiful and the pools where perfect. The beach was perfect for my family because we like to snorkel, although, the seaweed was a bit of a drag. Our biggest complaint is the food. Not a lot of variety, dull and the restaurants don't offer the variety and amount we've had had other resorts. Many other resorts allow you to order whatever you would like, not Catalonia, one appetizer, entree and dessert. If you order off of the children's menu you forfeit anything on the adult menu. Our second complaint would be the rowdiness that ensued in the pool bars. We witnessed a fist fight and screaming match that last an hour! Hotel staff wasn't sure how to handle it and it definitely spoke to the customers you get at this low price point. Good vacation for my family but can't say we will return or recommend to our friends.

We had a great time and loved our hotel. It was a little far away from the airport which was not convenient. The beach and cabana was really nice except the seaweed problem, which is an issue at any resort in riviera maya. Other than that we had a great time and enjoyed our hotel a lot!

Just got back from a 5 day stay. We had an excellent time! The hotel and staff were wonderful. The beach was a bit small but we enjoyed it. The food was good at the buffets and the restaurants. Bloved was a favorite and the steak house. I didn't like the Tappas so much but my friend did. I don't eat seafood and it was mostly that. The bartenders were all great and so was the restaurant staffs. Our room was nice and very clean, I do wish the bathroom had a tub though. All around great vacation!

Small but disappointing change

We’ve been coming to the Catalonia for ten years with a Privileged Suite and have always found it a good value. This year, we noticed a change that seems small but says a lot about how the Catalonia has changed. We have always gone to the Bamboleo snack bar several times during the day to get coffee. This year, the coffee is still there but there is no milk. You have to ask for milk at the bar. This makes no sense but it’s just one of many ways that the resort no longer pays attention to customer service the way it once did except for the services provided to the Exclusive Club members. We are considering Cuba or the Dominican Republic next year.

My 3rd time back...a great mexican feel....clean premises and friendly staff! In a large gated community consisting of many condos, other resorts and residences! There is a golf course...shops...marina with Dolphin/Manatee/Sea Lion experience all within a few minutes walk! Playa is a short walk to the shuttle bus (entry to the community) and a 2.50 CAD bus ride away...Tulum is about the same but in the other direction! I would highly recommend this as a bit more laid back holiday whether with your partner...family...or friends!!

We paid to upgrade to prestige level and our room had no water pressure in the shower, plugged sink, dark in the bathroom as the lighting was terrible and the worst part was the small bugs that crawled all over our luggage. We have been on many vacations and know not to put things on the floor, this was on the desk! The service staff at the hotel are fabulous, they do try hard and the food was ok.

We stayed for the week of New Years 2018 celebration. I dont suggest if you like the beach to stay at this resort or pay for the upgrade for the Privileged club. There were people using the chairs in the pool & beach area that were not part of the privileged area. This needs to be enforced. then why did we even pay extra for this service. you dont get any upgraded liqueur. the beach is not very nice, lots of seaweed & cant walk the long coast. The food was very good at this resort & the staff was outstanding. We didnt like that you could only make a reservation at 5 restaurants for a 8 day stay. plus had to stand in line & make the reservation sometimes we walked away as it took 2 hours to get to talk to the concierge who was booking the restaurants. this needs to be improved on extremely. there were people who couldn't even get into the restaurant while staying there. you shouldn't make guests wait in line to make a reservation. As for the rooms were average, we booked an ocean front room to get a Pool view with a slight ocean view. this resort doesn't have an Ocean Front room they only exist at the Yucatan next door. Our maid service was exceptional Miguel did a great job. thanks to Ivan at the concierges service he was very friendly & helped answer any questions he deserves to move up at the resort. Bartenders Mario, Justino (makes the best margarita on the property) and were very accommodating when they saw us come to the bar. Lucas in Beloved was a great waiter, did a wonderful job above & beyond to the staff members mentioned.
