The Caribbean is awaiting your arrival so that you can experience an unforgettable vacation on the south coast of the Dominican Republic at the all-inclusive Catalonia Gran Dominicus. The beaches and vegetation are stunning and the infinite horizons will leave you breathless. Located in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, specifically on Bayahibe's white sand beach, the scenery will amaze you. This all-inclusive resort is located just 25 minutes from La Romana Airport and 62 miles from Punta Cana International Airport.

The Catalonia Gran Dominicus has been designed for you to enjoy your stay with various sports and leisure activities plus an array of delicious food and cocktails to keep you satiated. Beautiful tropical gardens, which you can view from all of the rooms, surround the Caribbean villas, which form the hotel. All of the rooms are spacious, welcoming, and feature soft decor in tropical tones.

The attractive theme restaurants allow you to visit the Far East thanks to the tempting Teppanyaki cuisine. Try exquisite Italian a la carte dishes. Discover genuine Mexican dishes and enjoy the specialties of the steak house in American surroundings. Moreover, the complex includes five bars where you can enjoy all types of Caribbean cocktails.

For the more active guests, a daily program of activities in several languages (in the pool and on the beach) is available. Some of the activities include aerobics, volleyball, water gymnastics, tennis, soccer, petanque, ping-pong, and archery. If you prefer to play in the water, try non-motorized aquatic sports (snorkeling not included) and test scuba diving in the pool. If you love to dance the night away and play after dark, experience the Discotheque and nighttime entertainment with shows every night in the theater. The Children's club (3 to 12 years) and Junior Club (13 to 17 years) are also available to keep the kids and teens entertained.

Catalonia Gran Dominicus Low Key High Quality

located in Bajahibe, far frow the crowds of Punta Cana, a beautiful property staffed by beautiful people. Wonderful beach and calm Caribbean sea- service of very high quality. The property is not as large or as fancy as some in the DR, but for relaxation, good quality food, nice rooms and truly exceptional service this is the place, for me and my family.

This hotel should be removed from Apple Vacation destinations. We were in two different rooms which both had a leak, one from under the wall and the other from a light fixture in the ceiling. It took 45 minutes to check in with only 1 person in front of us and towels were not provided in the room as promised. The food in the buffet is almost not edible and the food in the ala carte restaurants is mediocre at best. Your Apple representative, one Reginaldo Morel was of absolutely no help and wouldn't even give us a telephone number to call for assistance from Apple. He should be fired as he does not represent what we have come to understand over the years as good service. We are long time users of Apple Vacations but may indeed seek out other options for our next vacation. In fact, we should be provided a credit from Apple for at least one half of the cost of our vacation. We prefer that you contact us to discuss the matter.

Check in was very slow and they were not very helpful. Our room was nice and close to the pool and beach however my sunglasses were stolen on the first day. The alcohol was poor quality and the food was mediocre at best but the entertainment staff was fun. The beach was beautiful.

The Apple Rep's we encountered before and during our trip gave nothing but excellent customer service. The hotel was beautiful, I felt like I was living in a garden. Our priviledged suite was very cozy. The refrigerator didn't get as cold as I would like. All beverages were at cool temperatures. When we did a turn down service, I would specifically ask for more bath towels, beach towels, and washcloths. Every time the maids would come, they did not give us new washcloths. This was annoying! There was always a lot of tiny ants crawling around the sink area. Our toilet needed to be plunged twice during our visit. Sometimes walking around the resort you could smell the septic sewer, which was gross! The entertainment staff was always doing something all day and night to get guests to have fun. Whether dancing, water aerobics, or nightly shows. The bartenders were always nice. The women staff at the Crepe restaurant on the beach always had attitudes. Sometimes the staff in the priviledged section weren't very attentive to something as simple as making sure we had water to drink. The buffet always had a vast variety of great food to choose from. But since this is a tropical island, and most of the restaurants were open, we encountered many birds, flies, and other insects hovering all around the food. I avoided the dessert and fruit sections completely because of this. The Rodeo Steakhouse food was disgusting; my least favorite out of all the places to eat. Terrace Lounge was my favorite; food was absolutely exquisite. The beach area was always clean. The pool was at the right temperature. The staff at the Priviledged Lounge area were always very helpful. We did three exursions: Outback Safarai (A DEFINITE MUST!!!), Marinarium (AMAZING!!!), and Zip Lining! We enjoyed all of them!!! I was really disappointed in the Alegria Spa. We got a couple's massage and facial. I kept telling them I wanted deep pressure with my massage, and they basically rubbed my skin like they were applying lotion. It was a waste of money. The facial was very mediocre; I've had way better facials in the U.S. I would avoid the Spa altogether!!! We went to the Disco one night. It was empty, aside from 2 other couples. We asked the D.J. to play a song. We waited 15 minutes, and our song never came on. You would think that since it was dead they would play our request. So we immediately left. We did get sick during our stay. We had diarrhea for 1.5 days. We aren't sure how we got it!

Biggest negatives: we had ants in our bedroom (do NOT leave any fruit juice or food on any counter anywhere - make sure it gets into the trashcan immediately if you're done eating); and the romantic lobster dinner on the beach took FOREVER, and my boyfriend and I were served our lobster after 6 tables that had gotten there AFTER us had been served. However, beyond these two things, this was truly a great, affordable place for us to spend our first vacation together! The privileged room was lovely - beautiful bed, balcony, and bathroom. I don't know what the other standard rooms looked like, but this one was beautiful. The shows at night are definitely worth going to (the entertainment staff are amazing dancers, not so great at lip syncing), and the disco is super fun at night, just consider taking salsa lessons before you arrive! The beach is stunningly beautiful with very nice, lukewarm water, very soft sand, and a little bar to keep that drink cup full. They also offer yummy crepes at the bar for your snacking pleasure. Overall, I'd 100% recommend this resort. The staff are sweet and kind and very helpful, and they deserve every penny they earn.

This hotel while not especially high end provided exactly what I wanted and needed. The food and beverages weren't phenomenal but if you are looking for a quiet resort with a beautiful beach this hotel is it. Private sections of the beach are one big reason to upgrade to the premier package. The staff was kind and always willing to help out. If you are looking for a place to party with tons of good booze and five star food I would look elsewhere. Still the resort was quiet and the beach was beautiful.

Great trip for a great price!

My boyfriend and I recently returned from our first vacation with Apple. We bought a deal off of LivingSocial throgh Apple Vacations to Catalonia Gran Dominicus and what a fantastic trip it was! We received the best treatment from the hotel staff, an upgrade to a Priviledge room, and traveling was a breeze! Apple had coordinated all transportation to and from the airport, and had an agent at the hotel to help us pick our excursions. The all-inclusive deal was great- we did spend more for tipping the staff, as well as extras we wanted on the trip (i.e. excursions, spa packages, additional dinners). I would 100% reccommend the hotel to anyone who is looking for a great value, beautiful beaches, and a memorable time. The staff at Catalonia Gran Dominicus were awesome-from the front desk, the fun bartenders, entertainers, serves, etc. I have never seen so many happy people who seem to love what they do and are so nice to everyone they speak to. While we were a young couple, there were more families there, so if you are looking for a "party scene" this is probably not the best place to go. But if you are wanting a great get-a-way with an amazing beach, delicious cocktails, and a welcoming staff this is the place for you! Our vacation lasted 7 days, and if I could have stayed for 7 more I would have!

The staff were wonderful. We had two rooms booked. My children got turn down service with chocolates every night. We only got it once and we were on the same hall. The showers in our room had little to no hot water or pressure. A complaint to the "privileged" concierge resulted in increased pressure but not the hot water. This was not an issue for others traveling with us. The beach was nice but had a very steep incline to get to the water. Since we were traveling with someone with mobility issues, she could not get down to the water or out of the water without considerable help. The pool however, had a zero depth walk in area that was great for handicapped people. We had expected all the restaurants to be open each night, but that was not the case. Restaurant food was better than the buffet food. The restaurants were all open air, and the desserts at the buffet were not protected. The birds were eating the desserts all the time and no one was even trying to shoo them away. Needless to say, we all stayed away from the buffet desserts. We had to ask for wash cloths and extra towels. The maids did not always replace exactly what they took, leaving us with out wash cloths most of the time.

We let the hotel know it was our honeymoon vacation and they still put us in a room with two beds. Additionally, after arriving in the early afternoon, they took until 5:00 pm to open up a room for us. Also, it was not made evident that our dinners would be limited to only four restaurant meals and the remaining nights had to be at the buffet which is not as good. The bar service was excellent. All the drinks were made fresh from real fruit juices and the servers were very friendly and welcoming.

Hotel is beautiful with beautiful and clean beach. The rooms seem to be newly decorated, but certain things, such as broken phone line, broken electric outlets, and my parents room Was without AC for 2 days. Not enough entertainment, especially at night for young single adults. The staffs were great and service was excellent. The food were overall good.

“Privileged” status seems to be no more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s available for purchase, but that’s pretty much it... just more money and peanuts in return. The nice and quiet beach section with great sea views that once was is no longer... now cluttered in the middle with everyone else. The private, air conditioned check-in/out lobby is gone and replaced with some “Exclusive Traveler” scam. And the private Concierge room with seating, snacks and drinks, and computer area is gone, too. And the diet isn’t limited to the above either. Gone are the shower bathrobes and slips, and the rooms are now in worse shape than the newly renovated - and cheaper - garden view rooms. The archery and tennis courts are a thing of the past, too. We loved this resort - even had our Honeymoon there - and always paid top price because we received top service. It was a quite, not crowded gem where the relax and serenity of the Caribbean experience was second to none at the price range. Now with the construction of the Adults Only Catalonia Royal, their sister resort next door, it has become another standard, overcrowded all-inclusive resort but without the amenities, newer feel and competitive pricing of their competitors near by. In short, it’s not a terrible resort for the vast majority, but it appears it has become a terrible one for us. And lastly, reviews older than 6-12 months, simply put, are no longer representative of it given the massive changes (described above) that have occurred since our previous visit just an year ago.

Everything was great. Food, entertainment, GORGEOUS BEACH, friendly and lively staff. We never felt unsafe. I would definitely recommend staying here. I would love to return and stay in one of the new rooms they are upgrading.

The name of this resort is Catalonia Gran Dominicus. Do not confuse it (as I did) with the much nicer Catalonia Royal next door. The way that it is listed on the Bookit website is odd. There is no such thing as Catalonia La Romana. It is also under MAJOR construction. During the 2nd week of October 2018, at least 5 of the main buildings containing guest rooms were being completely gutted. They put up large black screens to try to hide the construction but the noise and dust were unavoidable. We also had to go significantly out of our way sometimes because the pathways and sidewalks were regularly closed. The tennis courts and archery have been completely removed to make room for more buildings. CONS Besides the construction, the food at the main buffet was average at best. The specialty restaurants were good but they were only open for dinner and you were limited to 1 restaurant every other day. We chose not to pay for the privileged wristbands, but we did get to eat at the privileged restaurant once. It was pretty good - fresh at least. There was a big disparity between those that paid to be privileged and those that did not. Privileged guests sat at different tables in the restaurants, different places on the beach, they had their own bar, etc. It was awkward. Like segregation awkward. There were also about 20 timeshare salespeople that tried to talk to us everywhere we went. This resort is about 40 minutes from the airport (so be prepared for a longer transfer). We booked our round-trip transfer in advance through BookIt. They contract with a company called BD Travel (Best Day Travel). It was no problem to get our van from the airport to the hotel but the return trip was a nightmare. We were "assigned" to Pedro (the Catalonia BD Travel rep). We tried to book an excursion to Monkey Land with the people at the travel desk in the front lobby, but no one would help us because we were Pedro's clients (related to commission/sales, I assume). Pedro was not there regularly. Upon his instruction, we came back at 10am, 12pm, 3pm, 5pm, and again the next morning to book our excursion. By the time he was available, the trip was full. My daughter was devastated. When it was finally time to leave, Pedro told us to meet our transfer van 4 hours before our flight. We told him that we did not want to go to the airport that early and he changed our pick-up time. Of course, when we got to the lobby with our luggage, Pedro told us that we had missed our transfer and that we needed to pay him $130 US dollars to take a taxi. We told him that we only had a credit card and that we had prepaid for our transfer. After much debate, someone pointed out a van that had been waiting. We talked to the driver and he was supposed to be our driver all along. Pedro tried to take advantage of us. How many unassuming travelers have paid him cash?! PROS On the other hand, the beach was beautiful. This resort is next to the pier and the water is perfectly clear. We had no problems with seaweed. There were a few rocks, but they were easily avoidable.

Beautiful resort, The only minus is division on privileged and unprivileged guests

I have stayed in this resort for 10 days and this holidays was above my expectations. The resort is really great, beach is very beautiful and clean. The food in buffet restaurant was good, full of variety,a lot od fresh fruit, meat,... Althougt I was a little dissapointed by a la carte restaruants, because they were not open every day, and when they were open there was a long waiting line to get a table (we waited even for two hours) and at the end the food was not so good at all. The staff is nice and helpful, although they dont speak english very well. The animation program is great, they work hard every day to entertain guests. The only minus is division on privileged and unprivileged guests. We did not want to upgrade, so we stayed in unprivileged room which was basic but ok. Nevertheless we didnt come so far to stay in the room, but to enjoy the resort, the beach ... If you are unprivileged guest, you cant use all sunbeds on the beach, but only those for uprivileged (by the way, the sunbeds are pretty much the same, only different colours, and even if you are unprivileged you can lay in the first row at the beach in the shadow...), well but it is unpleasand feeling when you are mistaken and lay down on privileged sunbeds and the guard tells you in front of all people that you are unprivileged and you have to move. The same happened to me the first day in the restaurant when I mistakenly sat at the privileged table and I had to move again. In the next days I saw many guests who were mistaken too and have to move to unprivileged area. It is unpleasant feeling and a little humiliating, but I think that is the policy of resort, to make people upgrade to privileged. What I was trying to say is that, besides room quality, there is no diference between privileged and unprivileged guests and I doubt that privileged is worth the extra money.
