Our room was old, falling apart. Bugs, Gekkos shared our bed and room. Lock on back sliding door broken so was not secure until day before we left. Lights burned out, TV remote went dead and towels became scarce. When we went to get our first beach towels, she yelled NO don’t have any! 1% spoke English, and they did not care. Cold coffee, buffet was European and sometimes cold. We filled out a hotel survey but, we are confident that the survey will not get turned in or reviewed. We only ate in a specialty restaurant 4 times. We were not “ privileged or exclusive” and definitely felt it. We are telling anyone that asks to stay away!! Never again. We have been to the D.R. Eight times. We are not new to resorts. Extremely dissatisfied.

located in Bajahibe, far frow the crowds of Punta Cana, a beautiful property staffed by beautiful people. Wonderful beach and calm Caribbean sea- service of very high quality. The property is not as large or as fancy as some in the DR, but for relaxation, good quality food, nice rooms and truly exceptional service this is the place, for me and my family.

This hotel should be removed from Apple Vacation destinations. We were in two different rooms which both had a leak, one from under the wall and the other from a light fixture in the ceiling. It took 45 minutes to check in with only 1 person in front of us and towels were not provided in the room as promised. The food in the buffet is almost not edible and the food in the ala carte restaurants is mediocre at best. Your Apple representative, one Reginaldo Morel was of absolutely no help and wouldn't even give us a telephone number to call for assistance from Apple. He should be fired as he does not represent what we have come to understand over the years as good service. We are long time users of Apple Vacations but may indeed seek out other options for our next vacation. In fact, we should be provided a credit from Apple for at least one half of the cost of our vacation. We prefer that you contact us to discuss the matter.

Check in was very slow and they were not very helpful. Our room was nice and close to the pool and beach however my sunglasses were stolen on the first day. The alcohol was poor quality and the food was mediocre at best but the entertainment staff was fun. The beach was beautiful.

The Apple Rep's we encountered before and during our trip gave nothing but excellent customer service. The hotel was beautiful, I felt like I was living in a garden. Our priviledged suite was very cozy. The refrigerator didn't get as cold as I would like. All beverages were at cool temperatures. When we did a turn down service, I would specifically ask for more bath towels, beach towels, and washcloths. Every time the maids would come, they did not give us new washcloths. This was annoying! There was always a lot of tiny ants crawling around the sink area. Our toilet needed to be plunged twice during our visit. Sometimes walking around the resort you could smell the septic sewer, which was gross! The entertainment staff was always doing something all day and night to get guests to have fun. Whether dancing, water aerobics, or nightly shows. The bartenders were always nice. The women staff at the Crepe restaurant on the beach always had attitudes. Sometimes the staff in the priviledged section weren't very attentive to something as simple as making sure we had water to drink. The buffet always had a vast variety of great food to choose from. But since this is a tropical island, and most of the restaurants were open, we encountered many birds, flies, and other insects hovering all around the food. I avoided the dessert and fruit sections completely because of this. The Rodeo Steakhouse food was disgusting; my least favorite out of all the places to eat. Terrace Lounge was my favorite; food was absolutely exquisite. The beach area was always clean. The pool was at the right temperature. The staff at the Priviledged Lounge area were always very helpful. We did three exursions: Outback Safarai (A DEFINITE MUST!!!), Marinarium (AMAZING!!!), and Zip Lining! We enjoyed all of them!!! I was really disappointed in the Alegria Spa. We got a couple's massage and facial. I kept telling them I wanted deep pressure with my massage, and they basically rubbed my skin like they were applying lotion. It was a waste of money. The facial was very mediocre; I've had way better facials in the U.S. I would avoid the Spa altogether!!! We went to the Disco one night. It was empty, aside from 2 other couples. We asked the D.J. to play a song. We waited 15 minutes, and our song never came on. You would think that since it was dead they would play our request. So we immediately left. We did get sick during our stay. We had diarrhea for 1.5 days. We aren't sure how we got it!

Biggest negatives: we had ants in our bedroom (do NOT leave any fruit juice or food on any counter anywhere - make sure it gets into the trashcan immediately if you're done eating); and the romantic lobster dinner on the beach took FOREVER, and my boyfriend and I were served our lobster after 6 tables that had gotten there AFTER us had been served. However, beyond these two things, this was truly a great, affordable place for us to spend our first vacation together! The privileged room was lovely - beautiful bed, balcony, and bathroom. I don't know what the other standard rooms looked like, but this one was beautiful. The shows at night are definitely worth going to (the entertainment staff are amazing dancers, not so great at lip syncing), and the disco is super fun at night, just consider taking salsa lessons before you arrive! The beach is stunningly beautiful with very nice, lukewarm water, very soft sand, and a little bar to keep that drink cup full. They also offer yummy crepes at the bar for your snacking pleasure. Overall, I'd 100% recommend this resort. The staff are sweet and kind and very helpful, and they deserve every penny they earn.

This hotel while not especially high end provided exactly what I wanted and needed. The food and beverages weren't phenomenal but if you are looking for a quiet resort with a beautiful beach this hotel is it. Private sections of the beach are one big reason to upgrade to the premier package. The staff was kind and always willing to help out. If you are looking for a place to party with tons of good booze and five star food I would look elsewhere. Still the resort was quiet and the beach was beautiful.

My boyfriend and I recently returned from our first vacation with Apple. We bought a deal off of LivingSocial throgh Apple Vacations to Catalonia Gran Dominicus and what a fantastic trip it was! We received the best treatment from the hotel staff, an upgrade to a Priviledge room, and traveling was a breeze! Apple had coordinated all transportation to and from the airport, and had an agent at the hotel to help us pick our excursions. The all-inclusive deal was great- we did spend more for tipping the staff, as well as extras we wanted on the trip (i.e. excursions, spa packages, additional dinners). I would 100% reccommend the hotel to anyone who is looking for a great value, beautiful beaches, and a memorable time. The staff at Catalonia Gran Dominicus were awesome-from the front desk, the fun bartenders, entertainers, serves, etc. I have never seen so many happy people who seem to love what they do and are so nice to everyone they speak to. While we were a young couple, there were more families there, so if you are looking for a "party scene" this is probably not the best place to go. But if you are wanting a great get-a-way with an amazing beach, delicious cocktails, and a welcoming staff this is the place for you! Our vacation lasted 7 days, and if I could have stayed for 7 more I would have!

The staff were wonderful. We had two rooms booked. My children got turn down service with chocolates every night. We only got it once and we were on the same hall. The showers in our room had little to no hot water or pressure. A complaint to the "privileged" concierge resulted in increased pressure but not the hot water. This was not an issue for others traveling with us. The beach was nice but had a very steep incline to get to the water. Since we were traveling with someone with mobility issues, she could not get down to the water or out of the water without considerable help. The pool however, had a zero depth walk in area that was great for handicapped people. We had expected all the restaurants to be open each night, but that was not the case. Restaurant food was better than the buffet food. The restaurants were all open air, and the desserts at the buffet were not protected. The birds were eating the desserts all the time and no one was even trying to shoo them away. Needless to say, we all stayed away from the buffet desserts. We had to ask for wash cloths and extra towels. The maids did not always replace exactly what they took, leaving us with out wash cloths most of the time.

We let the hotel know it was our honeymoon vacation and they still put us in a room with two beds. Additionally, after arriving in the early afternoon, they took until 5:00 pm to open up a room for us. Also, it was not made evident that our dinners would be limited to only four restaurant meals and the remaining nights had to be at the buffet which is not as good. The bar service was excellent. All the drinks were made fresh from real fruit juices and the servers were very friendly and welcoming.

Hotel is beautiful with beautiful and clean beach. The rooms seem to be newly decorated, but certain things, such as broken phone line, broken electric outlets, and my parents room Was without AC for 2 days. Not enough entertainment, especially at night for young single adults. The staffs were great and service was excellent. The food were overall good.

I read several reviews and was concerned…however I have to say when I read reviews I take it with a grain of salt. If you are the type of person to get upset if there are bugs in your room, shampoo quality or expect the food to be amazing you are way too picky and nothing is going to make you happy. The group we went with are easy going people and so if you want an honest review read this please. Our reason to go away was to have fun, enjoy the sun, beach, food and drinks! Let me start off with the pros and what mainly you want to know. PRIVILEGE or Non-Privilege. We read so many reviews that you should upgrade…I am questioning whether the hotel writes those reviews because I really don’t feel you have to. We had booked with expedia and got a privilege superior room. When we got there…long story…we only paid for the privilege bracelets and not the room. This was not our understanding and this was an error on expedias part because the hotel doesn’t offer that. Our friends booked upgrade when they got there, paid the same amount and got a beautiful upgraded room. We spoke with Air Transat rep and there was nothing he could do so this put a damper on our first two days. My advice book privileged when you get there or even the day after you arrive to see if it is worth is. There is a small section at the buffet for privilege guests, but is it worth it. Certain section of beach, access to restuarant on beach, a few more a la carte restuarants for the week, Slightly better chairs at the buffet. There is also no 24 hour room service for food. BEACH: Stunning, turquoise blue water in the sun, beautiful light sand almost white in the sun. One of the nicest beaches I have seen. We spent all our time there. There is a rocky patch in the non-privilege section though and the first two days it was quite wavy so if you have kids you have to be with them or at least bring a floaty. The rest of the time the waves were smaller. The water was pretty warm once you get in. There is always a place to sit, but there are sections. Exclusive, privilege and regular. Sometimes we just went to the regular sections to find place because I’m sure people put their towels early in the morning. We were a large group too so we wanted to be together and in some shade. You can rent for free kayaks and we did this one day with our kids. Was great RESORT: It is a small resort and the smallest one we have been too and this was a pro for use. From our room we could walk everywhere we needed to be in less than 5 minutes. No trolleys to get around. We loved that. When we came the first day the entrance is so not nice or grandeous so I was a little worried compared to the other resorts we have been there. They need to update it and some areas of the place need a facelift for sure, but this didn’t affect our experience at all. ROOMS: Smaller than most we have stayed in and no really place to put our clothes so stayed in our bag mainly. We had to change rooms the first day because the couple we were travelling with their room smelled bad...pluming. We also should have had a superior room, but didn’t get it, but our friends did and it was lovely and nice room. GROUNDS: The staff was always working on cleaning or fixing. It was beautifully kept. STAFF: Almost every single staff member was great, we tipped too because we were a group of 10 – 6 adults and 4 kids. Language wasn't an issue but we did have one member who spoke Spanish. There was one server at the tapas privilege restaurant and really didn’t like his job and wasn’t friendly at all and kind of ruin our experience there. Just rude and not happy. I can’t remember his name, but they need to train better so it’s consistent. The bar guy JOAN, was fantastic always making drinks and delicious drinks fresh. One night at the buffet we were celebrating and the staff member open Champaign for us, a nice touch for sure. FOOD: So I have been to DR, Mexico and Cuba and the food was always hit or miss. Cuba by far the worst food. So we came with low expectations, but I can tell you we were really surprised by how good the food tasted! I also liked you didn’t have to make reservations and just showed up but because we were provided you could go more often. 1 buffet: Really good, variety of food. The pasta was delicious and the chef was an Italian from Italy and cooked it perfectly. One night there was filet mignon stations; creap stations…lots of variety. Kids section too. 1 Pizza and pasta place. This is open all the time. Delicious. Wood burning pizzas, a buffet with different pastas. This is near the beach so at lunch we wold come here. The house wine was decent too. 1 steak house. Delicious, had a filet and liked it medium and cooked perfectly. Entrees and dessert were great. 1 yuca restaurant: Dominican food, we didn’t try it there, but had some Dominican food at the buffet and was good. 1 creap place on the beach and there is a bar too. This is on the non-privilege side, but we hung out there too at times. 1 main bar near pool, no food, but sometimes at night gave you olives and peanuts. 1 juice bar: made tropical drinks wothbfresh ingredients Privilege restaurant on the beach (tapas at night) simple breakfast and lunch sit down. This would be one main reason you would want to book privilege. The food for breakfast and lunch was ok, hamburger, club sandwich, mussels…the view is beautiful don’t get me wrong and the drinks at the bar were far superior. Instead of getting Pina colada that’s slush at the other bars they made it in the blender and was delicious. We had supper one night and the setting is just stunning. Tapas was really good, we liked most of the food. POOL: One large pool. No swim up bar, but the main bar is there to get out from the pool. Shallow end and a deep end. There is a tiny kiddy pool for really only for infants or toddlers. SHOWS: we did the lion king and saw that last year. Really cheesy, but kids loved it. We only went once because it is a beautiful theater, but no backing. Just benches and pillows. So my husband has a bad back so it wasn’t ideal and even for me after an hour my back hurt so we didn’t see another show. They do, do the show outside at times near the main bar and we saw the circus show and that was decent. Also did a massage on the beach and that was nice...a but noisy but I loved it. Would we come back…I am the type to try and visit many places, but I would recommend this place. If you want a stunning BEACH, great FOOD, good DRINKS and paradise this is the place for you. It's about an hour away from the airport, we had to pick up and drop off at other hotels so this added to our time.

i spent 3 days in that resort with my friend and i would go again! it was simply perfect! the beach is wonderful, the amenities are great, the staff is the best ever. The entertainment staff was also very nice! The food is really good and all the alcohol drinks also perfect. i really loved it!

This holiday was booked with great enthusiasm for my partner's 60th birthday. We went to Puerta Plata 10 years ago for his 50th and were treated like royalty. We paid a lot of money for this holiday which we thought would top the one 10 years ago. How wrong we were. From the time we arrived to the time we left I can count on one hand how many staff were polite to us and actually engaged in conversations with us. On arrival we were immediatelyasked if we wanted to upgrade ($30 per person per night) as we were only 'standard'. FYI - Standard in this hotel does not include tea/coffee making facilities. Even the most basic B&Bs provide this facility. The room was basic but clean apart from the bathroom, The toilet door looked like it had been attacked by a mouse and the floor under the sink was not very clean. The electrics also left a lot to be deisred. Wiring right behind where the fridge was and no spare sockets (except in the bathroom) to plug anything in. However, I will say that our cleaner, Arelis, was brilliant and ensured that our bed was made every day, fresh towels when required and we had plenty of water in the fridge and lovely towel arrangements. Being standard meant that you had an orange wrist band and blue towels. The first week on the beach it was a rare occurence if any of the entertainment staff came and asked us to join in activities that day. However, when we were given the grey privileged towels in the second week, we were approached numerous times and even more times when we were given the brown and cream striped executive towels. I think at one time there were a maximum of 14 British people in that hotel. There was a language barrier but considering they have a lot of Americans/Canadians visiting I would not have thought it would be an issue. Most of the entertainment staff and general staff could speak 3 or 4 languages but English seemed to be a no go. The food was good but the service in the main dining area was very slow. Only drinks on offer at the table were coffee or water. If you wanted tea you had to get it yourself and we were never offered wine. Was that because we were standard??? Also very slow to clear away plates etc. You also end up playing a game of hide (no seek) from the people trying to sell you a timeshare. Not what you want when in a 4* hotel and on holiday to get away from hassle. The hotel did provide a gift for my partner on his birthday - a bowl of fruit and a bottle of champagne. It was a nice gesture. My travel agent had emailed the hotel a few times before our departure to ask if it was possible to have an upgrade or something special on his birthday but received no response. On departure day, upon handing our key and towel cards I just had a 'you will need this card to get out of the hotel'. No 'thank you'. 'have you enjoyed your stay?' or any other pleasantry. The hotel gardens were immaculate and the hotel is well laid out. The beach and bars are fantastic. The doctor and nursing staff were fantastic when I developed an ear infection during our second week. We certainly will not be going back to this hotel. Dominican Republic yes, but not this hotel. People we spoke to at the airport were raving about their hotels and saying how nothing was too much trouble for the hotel staff. One couple were the only two English in their hotel. I wish I could say the same about Catalonia Gran Domincus. Thank you Catalonia Gran Dominicus for making this a holiday and 60th birthday to remember but for all the wrong reasons.

You get what you pay for. It was fine, I had a good time for the most part. Staff were really slow and didn't make my stay more enjoyable. I would personally spend the extra money next time to stay at a nicer resort.

Firstly, myself and family (wife and two kids under 12) have been surprised with the volume of negative comments about this hotel. We are on day 7 of a 10 night stay and we wanted to leave some honest feedback. We have possibly been lucky with a good room, with no leaks and working air con (standard room, not privileged). The staff at check in and throughout the hotel have been lovely. From Afferneen the barman to Lisa, Lolo and Jeremiah at the Dive/watersports centre...all very polite and helpful. The food is above average in the buffet,however the restaurants are not great and surplus to requirements. The beach is beautiful and the sea a turquoise blue. We had cloudy water with waves so not much visibility for snorkelling but a short walk to neighbouring areas gets good results. Beach beds and pool beds are mostly snapped up by 10am but you snooze you lose. The entertainment team serve up the usual activities with enthusiasm (well most of them anyway).The hotel grounds are spotless....beautiful as well. This is a pretty resort with a better,smaller layout than most. The patrons are predominantly French and Italian and we have found them to be conservative and polite (like us we hope). Staff do not speak much English but we don't speak great Spanish....so comedy sign language is often required. The language barrier adds to the holiday feel. We didn't expect this place to be as good as it is....well done Catalonia and it will be difficult to find somewhere better value for a February holiday to be honest. (P.s. the weather so far has been mostly sun with a couple of hours of cloud a day).
