The hotel needs updating. It's out dated and is in need of repair. The restaurant is horrible! I would not recommend it to anyone. However the bedding is nice and crisp!

Perfect Price, Perfect Place!

I am a local resident who lives on the opposite side of the island, and I needed one night's accommodation in Hilo. I'm also a 35+ year veteran of the hospitality industry who teaches this subject at the local college. So, why do I mention this? Well, I because of my experience, I tend to be picky about where I stay. I couldn't have been more pleased with my stay at the Hilo Hawaiian. I would describe this property as a "no glitch, no glitz" property in that it is clean, attractively decorated property with a peaceful, "million dollar" view over the Hilo Bay that is within walking distance of Coconut Island. The staff were warm and welcoming; our room was updated, clean, and very comfortable; and I highly recommend treating yourself to the morning breakfast buffet while watching the ships come into port. I also recommend booking a bay view, superior room with a lanai (balcony), as it is the perfect place from where to sit with your morning coffee while watching the sunrise create rainbows over the bay. It also has a small fridge which came in quite handy. Finally, if you need guidance and advice about local sightseeing, Melonie the Concierge, is located in the center of the open air lobby and is always happy to help you make lifelong memories. I must admit, out of habit, I was looking for "glitches" and most happily found none! Coming to the Big Island? Book here, rent a car, and have Melonie help you plan the perfect stay in paradise!

We decided to splurge and got a room with a lanai overlooking Coconut Island. The room was well appointed and was even smart enough to not blast air conditioning when the slider was open. Prices in the hotel's lounge and restaurant were pricey, but not out of line with anywhere else we ate; however, the portion size was huge! The restaurant staff boxed up my leftovers and told me that there was a microwave at the front desk for when I wanted to finish the meal. Staff was very friendly and there were lovely gardens next door. The pool looked tempting, but we did not go in. I would definitely stay there again.

Great place to spend the weekend and enjoy Historical hilo

This was our first trip to the Big Island. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The room was updated and very comfortable. We had a wonderful water view and a view of the Maunakea Observatory. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to our needs. I enjoyed a cappuccino each morning in the lobby lounge. We look forward to visiting Hilo again in the near future.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The place was clean. It is in a great location on the water. Great value for the price. I ate in the bar location twice and the food and drinks were very good. The sliding glass doors were a little noisy but other than that everything worked fine.
