The hotel needs updating. It's out dated and is in need of repair. The restaurant is horrible! I would not recommend it to anyone. However the bedding is nice and crisp!

Great location next to park and on the bay. 5 minutes to downtown Hilo at most. Airport is only a few minutes away as well. Kens restaurant just up the road great place open 24 hours a day. Hotel nice, quite and comfortable. Volcano is about 40 miles away.

Excellent location with great views of Hilo Bay, drove to Volcanoes National Park, takes about 40 minutes. Older hotel but the rooms are large, nice and clean, well maintained. Don't expect 5 star hotels in Hilo. Easy and plentiful parking at the hotel. A bit far to walk from old downtown. Restaurant has a buffet breakfast, but I ordered off the menu which was fine, didn't eat any other meals there. Staff is very pleasant and helpful, used the tour guide at the front kiosk who was very helpful in arranging hiking and biking tours to the lava field. KTA Superstore south of the hotel just past the airport is great for groceries, gifts such as Donnas and Big Island cookies, 100% Kona coffee, and macademia nuts and chocolates.

Okay place to stay overnight...

Location of hotel is easy to find. For the price, I would expect to see a cleaner bathroom. The ceilings in the bathroom could use a bit of cleaning. No one wants to see mildew blotches anywhere. Everything else was good.

Well-located, reasonably-priced hotel

Hilo isn’t known for its 5-star hotels...so anyone complaining about older properties needs to adjust their attitude (or look to stay in a different part of the island). Hilo Hawaiian is clean, neat, and quiet. It is centrally located just a few minutes drive from the airport, as well as downtown Hilo. In addition, very easy access to Highway 11 to get to Volcano National Park. All this for what should be considered a very reasonable price in Hawaii. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the cool park next to the hotel, too.

Without knowing much about the history of Hilo, a long-ago boom must have necessitated the building of the enormous Castle Hilo hotel. Like something out of the TV series Madmen, what appears to be a 1960s-era build feels incongruous to the small-town feel of Hilo. It has seemingly been occasionally updated over the years but perhaps not so recently. Overlooking a tranquil bay with islands and views of the opposite coastline, rooms are large and feature a flat screen TV, mini fridge, small tub/stand-in shower, balcony with seating and table as well as complimentary filter coffee (but not a particularly tasty variety). Ice machines are every second floor and in-room aircon is effective. A large outdoor pool makes for good swimming and sun baking, car parking is on-site and free, and there are (untried) dining options. The foyer is enormous and features helpful staff, wifi was complimentary. Cleanliness was generally good but the overall vibe was dated. The hotel is located a bit of a distance from the Hilo town centre (about a 3-5 minute drive), amid sizeable and picturesque parklands that some may feel a little uneasy walking through after dark. A liquor store is located directly outside the hotel and there are a few other bars and hotels in close, walkable proximity, but none were investigated.
