The hotel needs updating. It's out dated and is in need of repair. The restaurant is horrible! I would not recommend it to anyone. However the bedding is nice and crisp!

Good, but room amenities could do with improvement

Deluxe room was spacious, great view facing the ocean. Neat and tidy enough. Friendly staff and welcome at reception. Car parking easily accessible, no issue finding a space and it's free. Room amenities - some improvements could be made, particularly tea/coffee station. Hotels of this standard usually provide ceramic mugs, glassware and some teaspoons as a bare minimum. There were only some disposable cups with minimal supply of tea and coffee. A little overpriced for what you get, most other hotels of this level will at least have a microwave. Also found the next morning that the fridge had been turned off the whole time, I had put food in there like cheese, ham and milk. Had to switch it back on. Could not get the wifi working.

Milton at the front desk was so very personable and helpful. It was the day of the big earthquake and nothing was normal. We loved the hotel and staff. The room was spacious and comfortable. The location was perfect on beautiful Banyan Drive.

Great location

Rooms were renovated and very clean. The hallway were very outdated and a bit stinky! Checked in just as the 6.9 earthquake happened. Power was lost for a few seconds and hotel was rocking. Staff handle it pretty good. Was at the pool and the staff in a kitchen area on the second floor were talking in a very loud voice using "F" word and other bad language. One family had to leave with their children. Voice travels and it was loud and not what you want to hear when your trying to relax by the pool.

Great Location for a Short Stay

We spent the 1st 2 nights of our 13-night stay on the Big Island at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. For us, it was a great choice. The hotel was only a 5 minute drive from the Hilo Airport. It was easy to find. It had free parking. And, it had a beautiful location. We paid a bit extra for a water view room which had an awesome view from the balcony. The front desk people were all helpful and friendly. They provided us with extra coffee so we could linger on the balcony in the morning. Yes, the hotel is older, and yes, the rooms are dated and not very fancy. But, the room was large, there was ample storage for clothing and suitcases, bathroom was old but large, even had a mini refrig. We bought a few packaged breakfast items from the convenience store near the parking lot and to avoid having to go elsewhere for breakfast or pay the expensive hotel prices in their restaurant. It was a short and pleasant walk to 2 great restaurants - Hilo Bay Café where we enjoyed an awesome dinner, and Suisan Fish Market where we had an incredible poke lunch. It was a 2 minute drive to Ken's Pancake House where we had breakfast one morning. It was a 5 minute drive into downtown Hilo for the Farmer's Market and other great restaurants. It was a convenient place to day trip along the Hamakua Coast, and would also be a convenient place to day trip to Puna, although we did not go there. I would highly recommend this hotel for a short stay in Hilo and I would stay there again if I came back.

Peaceful

The people were friendly, the premises are well kept and the landscape is awesome. Our room was large with two Q/S beds, clean and quiet. It is very near to the airport and lots of places to eat nearby.
