Casa Colonial Beach & Spa

Email | Share |

Located beachfront on the exotic northwest coast of the Dominican Republic in Puerto Plata, Casa Colonial Beach & Spa is the true world-class seaside resort.

This tastefully intimate resort features an exceptional fusion of old-world elegance with a more contemporary style. Casting its colonial vibe amid sheer curtains, eclectic furnishings, and fabric light elements, the resort boasts a one-of-a-kind art form that is as antiquated as it is pleasant.

The Veranda, an air-conditioned gourmet restaurant, features a fantastic breakfast and lunch menu daily. Guests also have the option of dining out on the terrace for an even richer experience. Acclaimed for its unique menu, the Lucia restaurant reinvents the hotel restaurant concept by offering artfully-prepared fusion cuisine.

The resort also boasts a cardio theater and wine cellar, but the real showstopper is its luxurious rooftop infinity pool, which comes equipped with four Jacuzzis. Providing guests with a cross-cultural relaxation experience, Bagua Spa features the best of indigenous and European treatments available (fee).

The hotel's romantic colonial architecture provides breathtaking ambiance unlike any other establishment in the Caribbean. Casa Colonial Beach & Spa is for the discriminating traveler who demands only the very best life has to offer.

The staff are helpful, the rooms are beautiful. The cleaning staff make figure animals on your bed everyday and take extra care to make sure everything’s tidy for you to come back to. Bi-ligual helpful staff. Close to everything but the beach but it’s not hard to get to with bikes rentable next door and cabs everywhere. Pool is beautiful and well maintained also. Really enjoying my stay here I will definately consider coming back. The price is right and it’s all you need!

FABULOUS IN EVERY WAY!

This was our first visit to the Casa Colonial Beach & Spa, and it did not disappoint! We have been to many hotels throughout the Caribbean, and we would put this in the top tier for many reasons. The hotel is spectacularly beautifully designed--elegant without being pretentious. The staff is extremely well trained, warm and friendly, which we find is often not the case, even at high end hotels in the region. We loved the absolutely beautiful infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean and enjoyed having drinks at the bar next to it. About the spa, I had one of the best manicures I've ever had here. And we also must give a special mention to the restaurant where we ended up having dinner every night during our six day stay. We had originally planned to eat there only occasionally, but the food was so delicious, and there was such a large menu, that we changed our plans. Again, our experience at other high end Caribbean hotels is the food is often pretty mediocre--not here. Apparently the chef trained at some of the best restaurants in NYC but since he is Dominican, he decided to return here to work. Finally, we really appreciated that this hotel is not part of a chain; it is owner operated, and the owners' attention to detail really shines through. Bravo, Casa Colonial Beach & Spa!

Delightful!

This was our first trip to the Dominican Republic -- and we decided to go one week before the trip. We did not realize that January is still solidly the rainy season in this part of the country, but it was still a great get-away. Playa Dorada is a "gated" community of resorts, with a very nice beach, a shopping center, independent restaurants, and a golf course -- if you are into that. Within Playa Dorada, Casa Colonial is the "boutique", "historic" resort. It is definitely smaller than the others in the area and it seems to have a much nicer atmosphere. We would not normally choose a place isolated from the rest of the country, but we don't regret it for our weekend away. I should point out that at least two other groups of guests were Dominicans traveling with their families. It is a short drive to many of the sites of interest, such as Puerto Plata. This is the area where Christopher Columbus first landed in the "New" World, so it has lots of history (including history the Taino Indians whose history predates that), as well as natural beauty. Casa Colonial is gracious. It consists of two buildings, the original house and another where most of the rooms are. The landscaping between and around the buildings is delightful. The hallways are quite wide and open air. The pictures of the roof pool are accurate (there are also hottubs and a covered bar -- useful when it rains). And the beachfront -- although technically "private" -- is continuous with the other resorts. One day we walked east along the beach. At the end of the resort property, we were stopped and told not to go further, "banditos". That suggests why an exclusive resort is desirable. The beach itself is very nice. Reefs off the coast break the incoming waves, so the water is relatively calm -- even during the rainstorms that we experienced. I was comfortable walking to beach barefoot. The water to wash off salt and sand was warm -- a very nice feature. One word of caution: This is not "all-inclusive" in any way. Meals are not included. Breakfast was about $25 for two, and it was plentiful (although off a menu) and quite good. We ate at the hotel two nights, and the food was very good. Even so, the hotel does not nickel-and-dime you. They provide bottled water in the room, small cookies by the reception desk, umbrellas wherever they might be needed, beach and pool towels, umbrellas and so on. But you do need to include the meals in any budget planning. I found the service to be just right. They let us roll our luggage to our room (not really that far). One (rainy) afternoon, I was in the room, and when I left, someone asked if I would like some coffee. Overall, it was a great place to come home to. It is pretty centrally located for visiting the region. And it is very safe and clean and convenient to the beach.

A clear five star hotel.

Just returned from five glorious days at the charming Casa Colonial. Everything about this lovely boutique was perfect. Our suite was very large and beautifully appointed and had three balconies, each with a different breathtaking view of the sea or the luxurious tropical vegetation. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly and the ratio of staff to guests is huge. The roof top pool and jacuzzis were an added plus and finally, the several restaurants were all outstanding, both in the food and the ambiance. This place should not be missed. It's truly magical.

Late December through early January we spent a week at Casa Colonial ~ including New Years Eve. It is a gorgeous & sumptuous boutique hotel with excellent service. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the service was stellar & the GM is ever preset. We had the Don Isidro suite & the junior suite next door as we traveled with our adult children. Don Isidro has the outdoor cast iron tub on the balcony - heavenly! Both were spacious & sparkling clean and I imagine the DI suite is the best they offer. Great location on a corner of the 3rd level which is quiet & private. The NYE celebration was lovely fun ~ elegant & magical, with a few surprises, and I would love a return visit to celebrate again. Food is exceptionally good & the atmosphere at Lucia is enchanting. Grounds are immaculately kept from the beach to the gardens & the walk between the main bldg and beach rooms feels like a walk through an avatar inspired garden. Comfy chaise lounges on the beach & attentive service, however, you are continually in the path of the trinket sellers on the sand that are non-stop from morning till late afternoon. They are, for the most part, not bothersome and by the 3rd day you barely notice. This is no fault of the hotel as the beaches are public. Might I add, beach area is very well maintained. There is daily yoga in a small lovely beach side pavilion, which we did not partake and platforms where they do spa treatments - mainly massages & are open air. My daughter and I had massages in the spa itself, which was unimpressive, though the treatments were fine. I would absolutely recommend the outdoor massages as I wish we had done. The only negative for the hotel is location - set amongst large all inclusive hotel properties and on the Atlantic side of island. If you're looking for blue, crystal clear caribbean water & white sand beach you will not find it here. The beach was not bad just good to know so your expectations are not diminished. I did my research going in and knew exactly what to expect. So my last bit of advice is one Puerto Plata town tour, that the hotel will set up with a driver & guide, then just plop yourself at Casa Colonial and allow yourself to be taken care of by the wonderful staff. A week was a bit long and for next trip will probably do a 5 night stay. Shout out to Edison & Wody for making the best caipirinhas!
