good hotel
Jan 07 2017
I would give this hotel 3.5 stars. Food was average on the whole although new years eve special dinner and mexican firsta dinner was very good, as well as the a la carte italian restaurant. You need reservations if you want to eat at surf and turf and it was full while we were there. The pool was crowded during the day but kept clean and in good care. The beach was average but ok for swimming- free kayaks were fun also. A bit crowded because was on a public beach and smoking was permitted which on the beach which I didn't care for. The tennis courts were nice ( 2 clay courts and 4 indoor courts. I took tennis lessons each day which were good. Staff was very helpful and very nice. Good service. The rooms were clean and well kept. The hotel is in a good location close to town. Overall, I enjoyed the hotel and it was a good experience.

Canto del Sol is a small resort with a very small beach. If you are going to enjoy a beach, this is not the hotel for you. In addition, the water at the beach is very dirty and filled with trash so swimming is not a pleasant experience. There are two pools, and they are also very crowded. The employees at the snack bars and bars around the pool are excellent. They work hard to get drinks for everyone and wait on you at the beach, bringing food and drinks. The rooms are nice but simple, no refrigerators, but kept very clean by the staff. The restaurants are nice and it was easy to get a reservations. The food at the buffets was good, and there was no never a line to get in. The location is really great, close to town, and also close to shopping.

They constantly try to sell you time shares and adventure trips. We had ants all over the kitchen, even though our room was "one if the best". The master ceiling was dripping water. Their solution was to move the bed to a different wall.

Canto Del Sol

Our room in the hotel was dated and not very nice. The bed was very firm and we had a difficult time getting a pad to try to make it softer. What Canto Del Sol lacks in up to date facilities, it makes up in excellent service. I was very impressed with the staff energy and service. We spent a lot of time by the swimming pool and the employees were quick to bring drinks. Dinners were great too, staff here are very motivated and fun.

Wondeful place in the sun

We were looking for a totally relaxing vacation in the sun and this was it. The hotel rooms and sahred areas were kept sop clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The small hotel was right on the beach, where we sat under umbrellas and read.

When you walk in they are right on top of you to check you in so you can go and enjoy your time. Everyone is so nice and helpful and when we had a problem they asked no questions and did what had to be done to make us happy. Will be going back again next year.

Comforting beach getaway

this was the best vacation we ever had together. The hotel was exceptional, food excellente, service beyond compare and the staff extremely friendly. The accident that occurred at the end was the only bad spot and did not involve the hotel at all.

Best in PVR
Jan 31 2014
These people bent over backwards to do anything to please us. The attitude of all of the travelers reflected this fact. The quality of the food shocked me at every single meal. Pool area perfect. Tennis lessons were outstanding. Rooms excellent and cool. I managed a Carlson Travel agency and I have run two multi-million dollar kitchens and this was my very best Mexico Hotel experience including PVR, SJO, MZT and CUN. The staff is just outstanding. The Prime Rib melted in your mouth. I can't go back soon enough.

We had 11 people stay. Everyone was well taken care of. Rooms excellent and staff also very pleasant. Enjoyed our stay. Great location for all activities outside of resort. If you want real cream in coffee just ask for it. the omelet stations for breakfast are great. When the the staff well it is amazing how well you are taken of and really appreciate it and don’t expect it. The house wines are actually very good. The a la cart meals are great ask for Spanish coffee. The skill and talent of waiters are a show in itself.

Amazing week spent!
Sun Jan 14 12:31:56 EST 2018
My mom and I just returned from the best week spent at Canto Del Sol. It's a small resort which we loved. Weve stayed at bigger chain resorts before but they just don't compare. The staff were always cleaning the grounds and the washrooms and always making sure the water around the pool was mopped up. Our room, 289, was good, exactly what we needed. I would highly recommend getting the foam mattress toppers though as the beds are quite hard. We went 4 nights without a topper and regretted it. The maids always did a great job of keeping the room spotless and ensuring we had bottled water. TV was alright, it made do for the night when we just wanted to watch something before bed. Balcony very small but we enjoyed it. We had an amazing view of the pool and the ocean and didn't even ask for that. The staff were great - Fernando at the buffet in the evening was very attentive and chatted with us every time we were there. We enjoyed hearing about his family and life. Around the pool we had many great staff ensuring we always had a drink or food - Juan always had a smile on his face, Manuel kept us laughing. Our favourite was the handsome Eduardo, we sat in his area every day. He always made sure we had a drink, a table for the drinks, and a beautiful flower to go along with it. Ximena at the front desk checked us in quickly and was usually there when we needed to exchange smaller American bills for pesos or to help us with getting late check out - late check out cost $75 USD and we felt it was worth it as our flight home was at 530pm and check out wax 11am. It allowed us to sleep in and still have time for lunch and to get one last swim in. Food was delicious, always a good variety every night. We enjoyed the tortillas with guac and pick de gallo almost every meal. The breakfast was very good and the coffee even better. The staff were always around to make sure you had what you needed. The A La Carte meals were amazing. We tried the Mexican, Surf and Turf, and the Italian with all meals being delicious. My favourite was the Italian, had the best seafood pizza. Outside the hotel there's a few touristy shops which we enjoyed, some massage and tour places, and a pharmacy. There were lots of ATM'S around the area and that was never an issue. Taxis were always very easy to get and reasonably priced. 50 pesos to get the maritime terminal and 80 pesos to get to the malecon. I could go on forever. We're having serious withdrawals already. The 2nd day there we already knew we would come be coming back next January. The staff really do treat you like family. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the bigger resorts but that's what we liked about it.

Checked all the boxes

Just returned from a 10 day stay. Excellent time. Consistantly good food. Superior friendly staff. Clean rooms always. Thanks to Ivan & Kevin's pool crew. Great fun activities. Jorge at the pool bar made our stay extra special. Thanks to all.

Overall, if I was coming back to Puerto Vallarta I would choose this hotel to stay. It’s nice, somewhat clean, and some employees are nice, especially the ones that work in the breakfast area. Only was there for four nights and was comfortable. Definitely would recommend!

Mixed feelings

I will have to start this review telling you that it is a nice hotel, but be aware of some issues! Some employees are very nice, but some will try to ripe you off, or mistreat you if you are not of value to them. My first issue with his property was on my first night as I had called them ahead of time seeking information about update, they advised me to ask the front desk when we arrive, what I did. The lady told me it was an extra $50 per night for the one bedroom suite ( 50 x 5 days= 250 xtra), I told her that at the end of the day I would come back to make arrangements for the following days. At 11 pm when I went back to the front desk to do the paperwork and payments, a new front desk agent tried to charge me $1200 for the following 4 nights. I told him that something didn’t sound right as 5 hrs earlier the quoted price was much lower. He went back behind the front desk and came back saying that he misunderstood me, that the price he gave me was for walk-ins (pure lie, as I spoke in Spanish and he even asked for my room number prior to telling me the quoted price). After all, he charged me $100 per night what I refused after the disgusting way he treated me. All in all, they will try to take everything they possibly can and if you are not aware you will ended up paying 1000x more for the same product or service. Still at the first night they called my room at 11:25pm waking up both kids (husband answered me phone but couldn’t understand what they were asking bc he does not understand Spanish). Next morning someone knock at the door at 10am even though I had the no disturb sign at the door. Went to their “concierge “ and asked to block any calls and make sure no one disturb us due to my kids sleep’ schedule. He told me he would call the maid in charge to confirm IF the sign was at the door at 10 am (he literally told me that my word was not valid). Only one restaurant for all main meals- buffet. Not very good quality, but I can not really complain as I already knew about it. However, the buffet they have every Tuesday for the Mexican party is great! The 5 nights we stayed at CDS we could only dine at their “special” restaurant twice. We ended up dining at the Mexican and at the one by the ocean (both were amazing!). Once again I went to the front desk to ask for exchange and after the transaction was completed I asked to have it in $20 paper bills not $100 but the guy told me that good tip is $100+ what I told him that tip is in accordance to the service provided (even though my requested was to have enough change to pay for the cab). Regarding to tips, some employees will be very nice up until receiving the “propina” and from there they will decide how to treat you afterwards, it is actually very sad because we had a few episodes that we weren’t sure if the person was being nice or expecting a higher tip... the snack bar has few but great options ( the pizzas are very good). the ceviche by the kids waterpark is also great, limited options but fresh. the waterpark was our main morning activity, it was easy to keep an eye on the kids and also less dangerous edges for them to got in trouble. the gentlemen that serves at the ceviche bar was one of my fav servers (sadly i didn't catch his name). At the buffet the servers were on point, in special Nicolas, he was very attentive and tried hard to make sure i had everyTHING I needed. One morning my daughter was holding his brother's quick oats and Nicolas took it from her and had it done in less than 5 minutes, i was very impressed as I had to ask the previous mornings and waited quite awhile. the omelet cook is fantastic! because the buffet isn't great she was very appreciated. she always had a smile on her face and was very pleasant to speak with. last but jot least, the shows!!! their entertainment team work very hard, the gentlemen in charge is good and the dancers are good performancers. every night they have a different theme. my kids loved them. all in all, we are planning on going back to PV-hopefully this year still, but I think that I would like to invest a bit more and stay at another hotel with a better customer service and food options.
