We were at the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda from Feb. 1 to Feb. 11 2017. This was our first time here and enjoyed it very much. Cleanliness is very important to me and our room as well as the grounds were spotless. There were a few small issues with our room but nothing that ruined our time there. Our bathroom sinks would take all day to drain. May have just been our room, not sure. The towel rack in the shower was broken, again not an issue for us. The room was always very clean when we returned late afternoon. The grounds were beautiful and very well taken care of. It was about a ten minute walk from our room to the pool/beach area but it was a gorgeous walk. The beach was a bit seaweedy but not to bad. We were still able to go in and enjoy the ocean. The staff is very friendly. There is lots to do if you like to keep busy or if you wanted to just relax and read by the pool that was fine too. Nobody pestered you. The food was fantastic. We ate at all six a la cart restaurants and loved all of them. The buffets were excellent too which was surprising. We traveled Air Transat and the first night we were there they had a special dinner and show for us which was nice. We really enjoyed that. Some of the entertainment is the same every year. We have been to four different resorts and this is the fourth time we've seen Michael Jackson but that's ok. It was good. All in all it was a great vacation. Love the Mexican people! Looking forward to our next trip to Mexico.

This is a top-notch resort! Antonio Cholion and Juan Ronolo Hernandez Altunar really pampered us when we had breakfast. Also they both helped us with our Spanish which made our vacation extra special. The staff at the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda went our of their way to take care of us. Everyone has a smile.... no matter what you ask of them, their response is "its a pleasure". Food is excellent, pool is beautiful, beach is exquisite. We have been there twice and have not been disappointed!

Great services, lots of fun!

Spent 9 nights/10 days at the blue bay. Feb 12-20 2017 We love this hotel. It is our 5th trip back and we were very happy to see improvements. Pros: The beach area is much larger and not as murky as in last years. To show I am being fair, the grounds staff do spend countless hours removing seaweed off the beach and the water is swim able. These grounds crews work super hard and the effort shows Loved the rooms, had a few issues with the fan in our room, it was quickly resolved by the Consiege . A/C worked well all trip. Breakfast and lunch were good, not blow you away. But consistent and lots of variety. Ruberta is our Mexican momma, she's very pleasant, remembers your order and is a pleasure to see in the morning when you desperately need coffee. She works with Candida very friendly. Al la carte dinners were awesome. Favourite was the French. Ask for Francisco, best service and super great guy. Italian salad bar was fabulous. Oriental we loved the spring rolls and the tapinyaki. Seafood and Stakehouse were ok, the service just wasn't as good. I think it's cause the restaunts are so large. The waiters are literally running at most of the restaurants. It would be better if there was more staff so that they could provide better service Pools nice, cool, we were sad the fountain wasn't running in the main pool. We used to like that. Lots of wildlife, Duhubs, monkeys, birds, coities and deer Live music happens a few of the nights at the lounge bar, we called it the blue bar. The sax musician is really good! We really enjoyed this area. Ask for Crystal, she's the waitress there and her English is fantastic. Very lovley lady and awesome to chat with. Beach drink service was really good. Luz was our favourite, always the right order. Really cheerful and pleasent to deal with. One improvement to the nightly entertainment we really enjoyed, was the band in the black and white after the show. Didn't happen every night but, as the beach party is all techno music, and doesn't start until 11:30, the nights the band played were a lot of fun. The spa, we love it. Go if you can Volleyball. Is what we love to play on the trip. Great way to meet people. The court has some hard spots so be careful. If anything the resort could have two courts set up. Instead of a soccer area. There is always a line of people wanting to play. Cons: One of the things we love but others don't, is the size of the resort. There are shuttles provided but we usually walk Washrooms. The one in building four by the pool and diver Center doesn't have toilet seats! Didn't the entire trip. There is always line ups at the washrooms. A larger washroom area to accommodate the pool and beach, around 1,000 and only 5 washrooms, is desperately needed! Our room was close but it was actually the worst part of the hotel. It's just ridiculous 5 washrooms for that many people. I noticed a lot more cigarette butts in the sand then ever. There are ash trays around but for whatever reason people don't use them it's really too bad. If you smoke, my hubby does, please use the ash trays Long lines, it's high season. But the lines at the swing bar to get an afternoon drink sometimes took 15-20 mins. Eddie and Ivan at the swing bar do a fantastic job. It's just busy and another bar area is needed Breakfast omelettes and lunch taco stations always had lines. Sometimes so long they block the buffet. Again high season so it's just busy, if the area was more spread out, that would be better. One afternoon they had a sushi station set up. It was fantastic! The guy making them was friendly and super at it. Really enjoyed this day lunch Nightly shows: not our favourite. Found them alittle dull. However, the blackjack night at the Vegas show was super fun, and the improvements to the black and white bar (which used to be the sports bar) are fantastic. It's is still warm and loud if you sit in close but overall the bar is much much better. Overall the trip was great. What made it was the service at this hotel is fantastic. Shout out to name a few: Francisco at the French (call him the Tall skinny guy) and Gabriel. Crystal at the Lounge Bar, works with Eduardo who makes epic martinis. Angel at the Italian host. Luz at the pool and beach. Eddie and Ivan at the swing bar. Juan and Mont at the VIP. Erin with circle one. Antonio, floats around but is always super friendly and a pleasure to see. Consiege at building four, Carlos and Artemio, it was my hubby's birthday and he helped me make it super special and a surprise. We didn't book an excursion we wanted to but when we went there was always a wait so we never got around to it. Went into playa Del Carmen. We have been here a lot and spent four days prior to the blue bay in playa. Go if you can, for a day trip. Have tacos at Don Sirloin, beers at the Playpa bar and massages on the beach. You won't regret it. We have the circle one, the service was the best we have seen. Super friendly and helpful. Erin was our host at checkin. She's was the best we have dealt with. Super accommodating and we hope we see her next year. The VIP are has done huge improvements. Loved the washrooms being so close and the high deck. Really nice to see Tips: bring ones or have change. It's had to break bills at the resort. It would defiantly the resort to have a bill breaking machine in the lobby. I would recommend this resort for sure! It's friendly, consistent and fun.

The good, bad and the ugly

The good: - The buffet never seemed to disappoint and the service was good, overall. -The French restaurant was AMAZING and the service was friendly and great. - The Italian was MEHH and the service was very poor. Our waiter was very rude to our group and would walk away from us while ordering food. - Taxi service to and from Playa was inexpensive and great. The bad: Overall, the service was quite poor. I felt as though staff were fed up with the large group I was travelling with (I was there was a large wedding party) and this showed in their attitude towards us. As we were a large group, we got a ton of "noise" complaints as we walked to our rooms together at night (We were all placed in the same building, therefore, some noise is inevitable). A huge default of the resort is the trolley service... you are better off walking the entire resort as you may be waiting for the next trolley for nearly 30minutes. The beach was mehhhh. I am a huge fan of the ocean, however, barely went in it. (left of the resort is a beautiful lagoon- highly recommended) The pool near the 6th building was very dirty. It looked as though it was never cleaned. If you plan on relaxing and sleeping in, not at this resort. Cleaning service begins as early as 7:30am. The carts are very loud and noisy and our bound to wake you from your sleep. Cleaning staff also have no remorse knocking on your door at 8am to begin cleaning your rooms.

Critical Feedback

Some points to highlight for an informed choice of a future traveler considering this resort for their vacation: - Location: Pros: relative proximity to Cancun, meaning less travel time from and to the airport (~ 30 min approx.) Cons: low grade quality of the seashore/beach (shallow water, muddy bottom spots, lots of sea grass in the water and on the shore, natural sand line is very narrow) - Amenities: Pros: good selection of restaurants; fitness room (not best in kind by size and selection of equipment, but functional); on property store offering some vital necessities (although at a premium price); beach pool with daily animation programs; theater venue with evening entertainment activities Cons: aged facility, as shows by the features of some of the buildings/rooms (e.g., substandard/obsolete bath tub fixtures, leaky/ noisy AC, deteriorated mirrors; there are rooms that are in a better condition, but what exactly you end up getting is a gamble, as you see your room only after you check in; if you do not like the room and want to change, you may have to wait till the next day, but then it is another gamble); limited amenities for small children, no open playground (kids club was advertised, but found closed most of the time during our stay); no dedicated rest areas in the "garden" (i.e., natural vegetation belt spanning across the resort, as the property has no cultivated garden) - Service: Pros: definite friendliness and visible dedication to customer service of the resort personnel at various levels, from the front-desk receptionists and building concierges (our special thanks to Ricardo and Max, excellent concierges at Bldg #5) to restaurant waiters and room cleaners; tips are welcome, but never demanded Cons: none to mention - Security: Pros: security personnel available on site and on call (potentially, via service desk, as security may speak Spanish only) Cons: security features of a room are of a questionable quality (e.g., a room safe deposit boxes may be easily detachable from their mountings or just be sitting on a shelf without being attached at all; room doors have no deadbolts/ interior locks, which poses the risk of a stranger's getting into your room in the middle of the night by accident (a real experience we have had, when for some mysterious reason a teenager managed to open our door with his card and then escaped apologizing upon receiving our 'warm welcome') - Ambience: Pros: a positive atmosphere for those seeking fun with unlimited drinks, food, and a beach pool Cons: perhaps, not good for those who need at least some occasional quiet time, which may not be guaranteed due to a combination of: a) loud behavior of drunk parties (it could wake you up at 2 a.m., with slamming doors and full-volume laughing in a hallway); b) loud animation activities at the pool during the day and beach dance parties in the evening (11:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.), and c) loud traffic of utility carts in the hallways, which sounds like a moving a cargo train as the cart wheels jump on the roughened concrete flooring (this noise would give you little chance to have a longer sleep in the morning, may kill your afternoon nap, and sometimes unpleasantly surprise you after 10 p.m.) Overall, for the purpose of alerting on potential pitfalls of those future travelers who may be sensitive to the described particular aspects, we give this resort mark "2", based on our experience. However, this shall not diminish our appreciation of the hard work of the personnel, which clearly deserves mark "5". For the resort management/owners, it is unlikely that our critical feedback brings up something new, as the current negatives must have been accepted as status quo with the reduced pricing used to maintain customer volume.
