Sisters Trip

My sister and I had a wonderful week at Blue Bay. We were checked in very quickly and assigned Coba 2115, a great room on the first floor. The young man assigned to care for our room did a very good job and always had great new towel animals each day. We usually had breakfast and lunch at the Jaal-Ha buffet on the beach. Juan and Miriam were very efficient servers, always there to help. Krystal served as the concierge for the week at our building and was very helpful in making reservations for the speciality restaurants, We especially enjoyed the Steakhouse, L'atelier, the French restaurant, and Di Rossi, the Italian restaurant, The beef fillets and salmon were fantastic. The resort does not have a great beach, due to natural weather occurances, but if you enjoy the ocean sounds and a nice lounge chair under a Tiki tree you will enjoy this resort. We visited last year and had such a wonderful time we returned this year.

Very clean resort

This was our fourth return to Bluebay Grand Esmeralda over the last 8 years! Yes I would agree that the rooms are in need of updating/decorating but you cannot fault this hotel other than that!! All the staff are extremely helpful from the moment you set foot from your transfer, to the moment you sadly leave. All restaurants offer great food and the staff that serve you are extremely polite and observant, especially Ruperta and Candido at Breakfast/Lunch and in the French restaurant Gabriel the Manager and server Daniel. But as a I say all the staff are extremely helpful, if you talk to them and give them the respect that they deserve you will be rewarded with humour, impeccable service, the old Spanish lesson and it will make your holiday even more memorable, plus it makes their tiresome job more enjoyable! I say this as on a few occasions whilst we were there we witnessed a few people of several nationality's being rude and just treating the staff with no respect what so ever - no one deserves to be treated that way!! Gracias Grand Esmeralda, we will return soon. Not many hotels in the world can offer such great food in 7 restaurants at a responsible price with impeccable service throughout and all with a friendly smile!!

we got a good deal on this holiday otherwise we would have been really upset. definiteley not 5 star, 3 at most. the hygein was appalling even by carribean standards.if you can get it for just over 1000 pounds and go with eyes open you will have a good time. THE GOOD. the staff are wonderful.we ended up in block 2[the first room we had had a leaking tap in the sink and a cracked sink which flooded the bathroom, also the write up stated a bath which it dd not have,we lost our first day trying to sort it as no one could understand english] and the concierges in block 2 were wonderful, helping us with all sorts of stuff which our indiferent rep didn,t.there are some premium drinks on offer, the hennessey cognac was a bonus, the main buffet was o k ,and the italian and french a la carts were amazing. the hotel provides a cheap and frequent mini-bus service into playa del carmen. THE BAD there is no shade anywhere,no parasols.everyone looked distressed, which probably explains why the bars were always full.the buffet snack bar servicing the beach and pool was filthy.as was the bar out side the restaurants. the only other bars were by the pools, not an option during the torrential rain that summer can bring. the main and only other bar was the black and white bar which was like a holiday camp entertainment center, huge VERY crowded and VERY noisy, huge plastic tables and balcony style plastic chairs,VERY uncomfortable. comfortable chairs in the lobby area but no bar, which was especially uncomfortable on checking out as we didn,t want to leave our cases and risk getting them pinched. If you are going expecting a beach holiday, think again. The beach is stony scrub-land and full of sea weed. The sea is constantlly being churned up and the water in front of the beach is a very uninviting dirty brown. So in conclusion,if you get it cheap and can stand the heat, and like a holiday camp vibe, then you,ll probably be o k.

ok for the money

Rooms. Comfortable bed , large walk in shower , air con worked well and mini bar stocked up daily.. Food/drink Food mostly good..Seafood speciality restaurant awful.Steakhouse good but no air con so too hot..French good 1st week but 2nd rude service, and food took ages. Mexican food 1st week good, 2nd week steaks overcooked and food took ages.. Pool restaurant for breakfast food selection more limited but useless if it rains as roof leaks and drips so hard to find a dry area..Festival nice area for a buffet..nice and cool.. Drinks..only one beer choice..not good.Wine also not good and only one type.Fairly good selection of branded spirits but juice mixers awful ..Cocktails very varied no consistency ..Also hard to get a non plastic glass in the main bar ( black and white bar) Location.. Playa del carmen ..taxi for 4 is 300 pesos each way or 65 pesos on the taxi shuttle which runs about 4 times each way.. car hire expensive on site..75 USD per day..we booked with zest and collected car in Pdc and paid £164 for a week.. Tulum..1000 pesos each way.. Airport about 30 mins away.. Hotel facilities.. Beach is awful..sea full of seaweed and not clear. Pool.small pool ok but sun beds filled quite quickly..usually all gone by 9am..However plenty by beach and large pool ( about 10 mins walk from block 8 ). Evening entertainment pretty awful but normal daytime activities in large pool eg beach volleyball, water polo, aquaaerobics etc.. Quite a lot of wildlife around the resort eg deer, monkeys, coati which was nice to see. There was however many trucks moving around the resort creating noise and blocking the paths which spoilt the holiday atmosphere. .. Overall ok for the money but would probably try somewhere else if Returning to the area.
