Blue Bay Esmerelda....2017

We've been here before a couple of years ago, so there were no surprises. Lots of employees running around making sure the place is clean and comfortable, but perhaps a little more serious maintenance should be done in the rooms. Ours had two non-working sinks, a broken chair, a couple of bulbs out and a TV that only worked if you held the remote right up to it. Our Air Transat rep called maintenance for us, and they kinda sorta got it fixed. Sinks were still wonky, TV still didn't work right (not here for the sitcoms anyway, but it would have been nice to see a news program once in a while - I am discounting CNN; that's not really news). Food was as expected; you have to appreciate the fact that the main restaurant is cooking for literally thousands of people and stuff won't always be piping hot, but it was edible. Definitely lacking inspiration in the dessert department. Fancy restaraunts were OK, in fact, quite good. We tried the Italian and the French and both were adequate. You aren't here for fine dining, though, you're here for the beach and it was quite nice. Very strong on-shore winds meant the red flag was up most of the week we were there, and the surf was quite high but the water was warm and as long as you didn't go outside your comfort zone it was really quite nice. Lots of beach chairs - at least in the middle of January - but I can see that changing as the place fills up in February and March. Bars are good, but the booze has got to be watered down. In fact, I thought they'd had a miracle and turned their white wine into water.... If you go there, those little furry things wandering around are NOT monkey rats! They are Mexican Coatis and they are everywhere. Please do NOT feed them - the preservatives and sodium in people food is not good for them. Plus it's not nice to wake up to a group of Coatis fighting over bread scraps when you're in a ground floor room. Over all, much as expected, nothing outstanding either good or bad, just a quiet week away from Canadian winter. I have an mp4 to share, but apparently Trip Advisor has yet to come into the new mellenia and won't accept the upload.

Great vacation

We had a great time at this resort. Everything was perfect. The food was great. We tried four "a la carte" restaurants. They were all excellent. We had a preference for the Grill and the Seafood restaurant. We also tried the Italian and the Mexican. Rooms were spacious and clean. Showers were huge !! Staff were courteous. We like beach volleyball and were regulars at both AM and PM games. Special Thanks to Angel (staff) for organizing them. At the beach, water was "brown" for the first 100 feet out. But we new that in advance. Unfortunately we had a red flag every day of the week.

Repeat customer ....probably for life !

I have reviewed BBGE previously and I didn't think that they could possibly get any better and yet......they have done impossible ,....they IMPROVED !!!!! My parents and sister flew in from Germany and met us there from the 15th of December until the 30th. So one would expect that something, anything, would go wrong during a 2 week period -especially at Christmas , the busiest time of the year ! BUT NOPE - our stay was perfection ! There was an issue with the air conditioning , but it was our entire building ( # 5 ) and they had it fixed within 24hours . Honestly from start to finish we enjoyed our stay . Everyone goes out of their way to exceed expectations . Of particular note is Willem and Mauro in the Ja hal Buffet . Hardest working men on the resort -honestly , and yet greeted our party of 7 EVERY SINGLE day with the biggest of smiles . The grounds are exceptionally well maintained with very hard working landscaping and maintenance crews . You will find no litter, no garbage anywhere . Its really quite something . The housekeeping was on point . EVERY day , our room was perfection , and we have a 17 month old and a 6 year old , our room was a disaster within an hour of them returning from the beach , and yet not a speck of sand was to be found . The Food - so my father is a diabetic , my sister has an extreme nut allergy , my 6 year old is in a phase where everything she used to eat , she no longer likes , I myself , am trying to lose a few pounds by watching my carb intake --watching us at an a la carte , or saunter up to the buffet was something to behold ....and yet every single member of our merry 7 person crew was happy . No complaints whatsoever , and like in my last review , the room service food is still superior ! Honest to God , I ordered room service several times ( Breakfast , Lunch , Dinner and even midnight snack time ( drunk hubby ) ) and not only was it incredibly quick but beautifully presented and delicious . Pools are immaculate . I spoke to the manager re the Pool Tile complaints everyone on TripAdvisor had been talking about and indeed they had it fixed . We heard of no one complaining about cutting their feet and enjoyed the pool thoroughly . Perfect temperature and always clean . Beach - Listen , the resort is built in the jungle , the mangroves specifically , so the mud/dirt causes the water not to look pristine ..but it is ..really , 2 ) there is sand , but its not miles ad miles to walk across , but its there and the beach is cleaned every morning , we were in the Ocean every day , the water was as warm as bath water , and really beautiful . The stones that some people have commented on , serve a purpose , why are you walking anyway, SWIM , that is what the ocean is for and so much more fun . Speaking of fun , the lagoon that I mentioned in my last post , is still there and incredible . Really , really , really do yourself the favour and check it out . Simply turn to your left and walk 10 minutes , you will pass a resort or two and then you can't mistake it - when you hit the bridge you are there , now turn left again and enter the lagoon from the side , the current will take you out to sea , and the view as you round the bend , under a canopy of trees will literally take your breath away . To quote my 6 year old " mama it feels like we are in a movie " . The grounds are extensive so you will do some walking - BUT only if you want to , otherwise , take the trolley's that run regularly . My family and I loved walking the grounds , its very peaceful and full of living green energy . Also all the paths are well lit so you don't have to worry about getting lost . There is a shuttle that runs to Playa Del Carmen every day , every few hours , and is reasonably priced ( pay in Peso's instead of US$ to get the better deal ) The animation crew work hard and the nightly shows were a hit with our daughter ..and even my Mom . My father was more inclined to play one of the several games that they have ( chess , giant Jenga , billards, air hockey etc. etc. ) The Spa is worth the expense . Really a lovely way to spend the day and my husband was so impressed by his Massage Therapist , Candi , that he went back to her twice more before we left . I too, can honestly say that the various treatments I had were 5 star all the way . No question . In conclusion , we will be back . Again , I have stayed at higher end resorts , sure , but the people that work here make this place exceptional , and really for the price , you can't beat it . I am not sure how we could have enjoyed ourselves more on this trip to BBGE than our last , since I thought it was fantastic then , but I suspect that the Manager ' Oliver ' has something to do with that . He is hard working , dedicated and we saw him on more than one occasion , working right along his staff , helping out and pitching in . He is friendly , professional and knows how to keep his guests smiling . GREAT JOB Oliver , keep up the fantastic work !! Ok now for some bullets : - Mom's there is baby food in jars available ( free ) for your wee warriors . - we brought bug repellent - but never needed it . I think I might have had one bug bite and I don't think that was a mosquito , I think it was a sand fly - none of us got sick - travellers diarrhea , nothing , ...again we were there for 2 full weeks which is amazing for Mexico . - there is a doctor on the resort ( we had a situation with my father ) . The doctor was/is incredible and very thorough . Really and truly a gem of a woman . - Bartenders work incredibly hard - please be mindful of that . Lastly , people , bring your 1$'s , you don't have to tip , of course not , but when you see how hard everyone works , how can you not ? We tipped everyone , the housekeeping staff daily , our servers , the bartenders , and of course the spa staff . If you are thinking of going to BBGE or have already booked , Good for you . YOU will have an incredible time , in one of the most beautiful countries in the world , serviced my some of the friendliest , happiest people on earth ! Feel free to message me with any questions ..and check out my review of eating at the Pavo Real By The Sea ( off the resort ) and the amazing drivers at USA Transfers.

Another Amazing time spent at the resort...

Thank you so much for treating me and my friend Peter during our stay. It was only 2 days and 2 nights but quite great. Bar tenders and the rest of employees are awesome. Huge shout out to Jorge Brito and Jose Vargas for being so accommodating. Keep up the good work guys! I will definitely recommend this place to all of my friends around the globe. French speaking people, look for Jorge Brito. He will help you the best way he could. Again, Muchas Gracias Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda. Till my next visit.

Sand, pool, drinks and all (or nothing) to do!

My idea of a perfect vacation. If you want to have a wonderful breakfast and then sit by the pool or by the shore (20' apart) and do nothing, you will love it. If you want to go to the ruins at Tulum followed by snorkeling, you can do that too. It all depends on what you want. The Mexican and French restaurants are great and the clear nights are perfect for watching the stars.
