Spring getaway

We stayed at BlueBay Grand Esmeralda from May 9th-16th. We went with friends for a spring getaway! The resort is big we stayed in building 5 which was close to the pool and beach! Great for us since we are pool and beach people! Rooms were clean an comfortable! Food was better than a lot of the resorts we have stayed at in Mexico. They had some top shelf liquors which was nice! Staff was nice and remembered us every time we went to restaurant for meals! We enjoyed our stay and would return to resort. On the downside beach was nice but too much seaweed which staff did clean. The ocean isn't crystal clear was murky not as great as other resorts we stayed. But we still had a great time and was well worth what we paid for the week which was not a lot we found a great deal! We travel 3-4 times a year and try to go to Mexico at least once a year. All in all place was nice and would definelty recommend as well as return!

room was comfortable but needs updating, maid service good, towels changed daily etc, however not great with cleaning, i accidently sprayed suntan spray on mirror, it was still there 2 days later! variety in normal restaurant pretty good, not so great in the a la carte which you have to book, entertainment not great either, but on the up side, staff are very polite and very quick to see to your drinks etc, especially in the black and white bar, service by waitresses was very good, beach was nice but thery seemed to have a problem with seeweed! dont know if thats normal and all the time or if just the time of year, may.i., mot putting it down but could of been better, and the shops on the resort charge ridiculous prices!!! very expensive! not overly impressed with reception either!

Pros: room cleaned everyday and always clean Cons: 1. Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda: it is definitely not 'Grand' at all!. We travel to Riviera Maya every year and stayed at 5-star hotels. This is not one of them by a long shot. 2. Hotel/rooms very outdated. We took the Premier Package but honestly other than a partial view closer to the beach I was not impressed. The rooms lack furniture and whatever is there is old. When in RM we stay at the Yucatan Princess....no comparison!! 3. Beach: i would be at the beach by 7am and it wd be full of algae, garbage from the previous night and chairs all over the place. Workers tried their best to remove the algae/garbage with the pitch fork but that took forever. At the YP tractors go by at the crack of dawn every morning, sometimes twice, to remove the algae and workers rake the sand by hand that leave it clean. 4. Internet: well....they give you one password for 1 device only but since we had the 'Premier' package they gave us a courtesy password. These passwords consisted of letters, symbols, numbers as if you were in the secret service. We had 2 cell phones and an ipad. If you wanted one for the ipad they ask you for $3USD!!!! That's insane!!! None of the hotels we ever stayed in whether in Mexico or elsewhere was there any charge for extra logins! At the YP it's your name for the login and the room number for the password for as many devices you have! I spoke with the front desk 'manager', Mr. Omar. Very rude. He said that that was BB policy. He rather lose a guest than to just provide another password. To charge for internet in a so-called '5-star' resort is ridiculous! I told him to keep his $3USD. 5. Pool: again need to be renovated. A family member was playing in the pool and he got cut by a broken tile at the bottom of the pool. 6. Entertainment: same every night and not very professional

Do your research before you go...not a 5 star!

This resort really does have its pros and cons. My husband and I and our two kids (aged 5 and 8) traveled here with two other groups (9 people in total) from April 18th to 27th... Here were the pros: The grounds are beautiful. Well maintained gardens...larger pool and beach area was gorgeous.... food was excellent... loads of variety and options for everyone! The service staff were exceptional....in particular, the service staff at the smaller pool snack bar/restaurant. A special thank you to Fernando, Severo, and Elvis for making our trip an extra special one.... they always went above and beyond in the customer service department and greeted us daily as if we were family! Fernando had made special arrangements to have a delicious cake made for my husband's birthday and decorated the table for us... it was quite the celebration! Now for the cons: This was not a 5 star resort. In Mexico, I would expect to see Corona as the "house beer" not some cheap, low brand name beer "Superior"....it was terrible. The resort was too big ...30 mins to walk from where they placed us to the beach....there were trolley carts, but often, they were broken or not available. We were with friends with mobility issues (Parkinsons) , so we relied on these carts... the long wait times became a hassle. The rooms were basic and I'm okay with a little bit of mold but unless you had the air conditioning on, the room had a terrible mildew smell! Then there were the room cards/keys... they would just randomly stop working...become deactivated...so you would have to either wait for a trolley cart to come or walk all the way back to the lobby to get them reset. And as i mentioned before, this isn't a small resort! WiFi was only available for one device per room booking...the extra costs were $3/day per additional person.... and not only that... you are paying for the WORST connection. Normally WiFi isn't a big deal, but those who have small children and want an option to have your kids be occupied from time to time...this wasn't an option for us. The pool was also falling apart ....the tiles were chipped/broken/loose, leaving 5 of us with cuts. The kudamundis around this resort were terrible! They were everywhere and a HUGE nuisance. They would constantly try to rummage through your bags at the beach and by the pool and would run off with any food or drink item you had. The worst part about this trip was the time of year. It was Spring break for a university in Spain and the resort was FULL....I mean HUNDREDS of students. They were loud and inconsiderate. Yelling...laughing... singing ....throwing cups down the hall making so much noise at all hours of the day and night, making it impossible to get any sleep.... and when we tried to complain about this to management, they were always conveniently in a "meeting" so nothing was done. The front lobby staff were just as rude and disrespectful as the students. They made zero effort to rectify the issue and didn't appear to want to correct the problem. This made for a very LONG trip as we were all sleep deprived. Its interesting that the only way to connect with management staff at Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda is through Trip Advisor... I would like to expect that they can pull themselves away from theirs "meetings" to respond to this review. We were all so happy to leave Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda.... and needless to say... we will never be returning to this resort!

Pros: staff at pool and a la carte restaurants exceptional. So friendly and always refilling glasses. Good food choices. Cons: The hotel is very outdated and in need of a serious refurbishment, the pools are dirty and people flicking cigarette ash and drinks in to them. Had to move room due to the walls being thin can hear every noise. Maids ignore do not disturb sign and enter rooms anyway so there is a pressure to leave your room for 8am. Wifi is atrocious and very expensive. So many rude guests who don't understand the concept of waiting in a line to be served. We were offered a free upgrade to a sister hotel by a concierge and then when went to reception to book 5 minutes later we were told it was full. However, then seen 2 guests being offered the upgrade. When I questioned the concierge I was then told it couldn't be offered to those travelling with Thomas Cook. Both complete lies, obviously thought we were not the right look for their sister hotel. Entertainment is just the same group of dancers each night in different costumes. Most definitely will not return. If looking for a luxury 5 star resort don't come to this hotel.
