Mexican holiday

We booked blue bay grand esmerelda on good trip adviser reviews. When it got to about 3-4 weeks before 4th july (the date we arrived)...the bad reviews started creeping in....the more we read, the more we were gunna try n change hotels.....but do you know what?go and see for yourself....... if you believe what you read then so be it..... Some people want the earth built around them for what they expect on a holiday....we are a well travelled family. We have stopped in the cream of the crop to the dumps of the world....but none have spoilt our *HOLIDAY*first of all we dont go to inspect the fixture n fittings and how things are held on by mastic/tape/nails/screws etc...and the fact you dont get waited on hand and foot etc.... Room was spacious Food was excellent 2 pools were great 1 quiet top pool and 1 lively pool at beach which is where all animation and games go on.both good. Choice of 6 a la carte restaurants which you can book Mexican, oriental, seafood, italian, french and steakhouse. 99%of staff very nice and helpfull...the 1% are the ones peed off with the crap they get of unhappy holiday makers...the black n white bar 24 hr all inclusive... Beautifully kept grounds... Entertainment and games very good... We had a great 2 weeks holiday in this massive resort....either walk or you can catch golf cart buggies to places...from lots of bus stops at resort.....we met some great staff in the top pool restaurant....got well looked after by willian and ferdinand. We met some fab people from all over Pri,dev, ben, jack, harry, dave, lyndsey, luke, melissa, nestor, joel, chris, eileen, and many more.great lovely people.....we ate in mexican food ok ish (i think i ordered something i didnt like)my fault We ate at the steak restaurant very nice We ate at the french restaurant very nice We ate at the oriental nice ish (bearing in mind its there version of oriental) Festival buffet restaurant very nice food every night lots to choose from.... We mostly stayed at top pool where bar and restaurant was good and great staff. This resort is set in the jungle...a bid array of wildlife which my daughter absolutely loved coatis and racoons...they had a family of dear ,iguanas, spider monkeys..like possum things with no tails...we went into playa del carmen....nice hustle/bustle town (people say...you get pestered)you dont, you get asked off maybe every shop assistant would you like to look at my shop/stuff...just say 'NO' and carry on.....they leave you alone .....the beach and sea very nice at playa......sea at esmerelda dark because of seaweed and sea grass (not the hotels fault)mother nature....we done a trip to XEL-HA.....oh man.....it was amazing.... an ecological water nature reserve water park....very good....50ft water slide snorkeling...swimming with dolphins (at extra charge)zip lines into rivenes rope swings in to mini ponds...cave swimming...kids oark/manatees/turtles..etc food was nice....great place.... Back to the hotel/resort yes it has a few problems but it didnt spoil our holiday.... No where on planet earth is perfect Loved our stay here and will reccomend and look to going back.... If you do book walk to the beach when you get on the beach turn left and walk around 10-15 mins along to the fresh water lagoon and mangroves .....paradise.....you get in at top of mangroves opening and drift down lagoon to the sea/beach....very good.....thanks all staff and freinds we have met at esmerelda great holiday.... Oh the mozzies love you here doesnt matter what you cover yourself in.....but again didnt let it spoil the holiday....

The resort has 10 years and we can see some age in the rooms furniture and some and other locations. Pros: the surrounding environment is amazing, dozens of animals in the surrounding; the resort is big but you have 2 huge swimming pool areas. The buffet variety its not a lot when you compare with other large resorts but very good; fresh fruit and ingredients; to the dinner you have a lot of theme restaurants that you can book all week; I don’t think you have any limitation. Entertainment in all evenings and the gym is decent Cons: If you don’t care about details nothing special; some age in the rooms (they are very spacious); swimming pool entertainment very poor, and in the evening the beach bar had no music (you can solve it with some wireless speakers). The beach is not very good Still a very good option to consider for who wants to escape the large hotel chains that are all the same

Arrived home on Sunday from our 1 week stay. The drive into the hotel is lovely , a lot nicer than the other hotels. On arrival the reception is ridiculously warm with no air con. It took us around 15/20 minutes for someone to come and collect us to be taken to our room . Before we left I had explained to the hotel that it was our honeymoon so I had hoped for a little extra in the room ( I know this is never guaranteed but it was a special holiday for us !) The room was smalll with 2 really small double beds. It was an adjoining family room however we had no access to the large suite next door or the massive jacuzzi that was on the balcony. There is no privacy whatsoever on the balconys. I was disappointed in the room because obviously we weren't getting an upgrade but it was sort or like flinging it in your face 'this is what you could have had' The food in the hotel is ok. They have a great selection but it doesn't always taste great. The mexican a la carte was a massive let down. However we did enjoy the steak house, oriental and Italian. Staff at breakfast weren't attentative at all , most mornings we had to get our own drinks and the high chair for our baby. At night some of the waiters are over the top nice and it can be in your face when you know all they want is a tip. The MASSIVE and MAJOR let down of the holiday for me was - The pools. They are disgusting. They don't have a filtration system and they only ever sprinkle some disinfectant in it at night. The tiles are all cracked and falling off ( I cut myself the second time I went in !!) The pools are not at all cool, it's more like taking a massive bath . There isn't much for kids either , they have a kids club but it's only for older kids. The shops in the hotel are SUPER EXPENSIVE they wanted $35 for a ball that would cost you around $1 in Walmart!! We enjoyed the beach and we loved the swing bar !! Overall , would I return ? If they improved the pools and had other extra facilities then possibly but I certainly would t go back if it was to remain the same.

BE PREPARED TO WALK....ALOT. I do not recommend blue bay to anyone.

For my taste the drinks were very bad, also they wash the glasses in front of you in water stuck in a container with soap the water looks dirty and ask way you do that instead of washing them with running water and they said this way is faster. The pools are black with mold. Be sure to have your husbands, boyfriends bring long pants if not they are no going to be able to eat in any of the restaurants " dress code at their discretion". disappointing beach. The hotel is huge and you have to walk A LOT....
