Never been ignored quite so hard

The best part about this hotel so far is the toilet paper is softer than anywhere else we’ve been in Panama - I’m only partly joking. We are moving to Panama; we’ve stayed in a handful of places and received varying degrees of service. Our Spanish is pretty good and we are friendly, happy people. Lunch is served 12-3, we arrived before 2:30 and while plenty of people were just sitting down, the staff had already pulled half of the buffet and all food descriptions - normally this would not be a problem but the food was very, very unrecognizable. Is that chicken, or pork? Whatever it was, it tasted crappy. All salads tasted identical, strangely. A staff person came by our table, shoved a chair at our table, zero eye contact and that was 100% of staff contact during lunch. Every other diner received a glass of water, fresh plates, spoons, etc. we’ve been in many countries but never been ignored quite so hard! And, yes, we were wearing clothes and shoes per the dress code (while few others were). Bartenders were good. Check-in was normal for here. Powerful sewer smell in lobby (they said they were working on it); similar smell in pool bathrooms; toilet in hotel room also backing up -again, not our first hotel in Central America - this is gross. Two “pools” on site - in quotation marks because one pool only maybe knee deep. Not even staying the night! We checked out within two hours! Our driver picked us up at Casa de los Suenos (awesome place!!) two days later - he said he was worried about us, did not feel comfortable leaving us at BlueBay! Place needs a lot of work and definitely needs NEW MANAGEMENT!!

The Beach Resort in the name is a bit misleading as the hotel runs a shuttle about 10 minutes away to a small beach area it owns with a pool, bar and some beach chairs and loungers...sand is black and the ocean seems dirty. Nice thing is the all inclusive wristbands work at their beach bar too. Staff throughout the resort are very friendly...they made the stay better. The food is very bland and it’s the same stuff at every meal, which got very old after a week. No other places really close to eat or we would have ventured out. Oftentimes the food was served luke warm or cold. The rooms are pretty basic and in need of updating. The two pool areas are nice. Spa is pretty basic. Amazed that they can still charge almost $200 per night here. Showers are always a 2 of 5 days so far we’ve had ice cold showers. The bars of soap are about 1”x1”x1/8”...bring your own. I might stay here again, but would probably look for a different option first.

Not bad, but needs a little work

Our recent stay at the Blue Bay was nice - mostly beautiful grounds and pools and a 18 -hole golf course that I sadly did not get to play (didn't have golf shoes with me). The resort is a renovation away from a fourth or fifth star (above), but the service and amenities we experienced were very good. The buffet wasn't great, but it was good, particularly breakfast and the fish course at dinner. Bar service is somewhat limited if you are on the all-inclusive package, but you can ask for a upgrade drink - they're not expensive. The wine-by-the-glass selections are good and included - basically red and white, but from good producers. We saw mainly Panamanians from Panama City on weekend holiday during our visit - it's very slow and quiet during the week. A good pro shop is available. I saved the best for last. My spouse became ill during our dinner one evening (no, not from the food), and the response from the Manager on duty and the staff was excellent! They even stopped by our room later to check on her. Just in case, an excellent hospital is located nearby, but fortunately we did not need it. Also, much appreciated was assistance from a fellow guest, a nurse from Canada, who stepped in and took charge immediately. We thank the staff and management of the Blue Bay for their concern and assistance.

This is NOT a 4 star all inclusive beach resort. It is not on the beach, which is a 10 minute shuttle ride away. There is a bar, pool, and chairs at the black sand beach. The a la carte restaurants were not included in price. The buffet was good, but almost the same every day. Super saver room was spacious, but no hot water a couple of times. The staff speak very limited English, so some Spanish would be helpful. There is no rep. on site to book excursions with, so had to do over the phone and pay at another resort. Wifi was free in public areas. We think the alcohol was watered down or they gave us cheap brands instead of premium. The hotel was quiet except on the weekends when the locals take over the resort pool and beach, which made it very loud. There is no evening entertainment at the resort. Often there was 2 types of music playing, which was annoying.

So when we last left you we were at the Manglar Lodge. Now we’re here. at a resort! The facilities here are much better than the Manglar but a lot more expensive. This place has all the things you expect at an all inclusive golf resort, golf, pools, a so-so buffet where you eat, and free drinks, including alcohol. The place just needs a little sprucing up. It looks like the heyday if this place was ten years ago. But everything works. There is a safe in the room for your valuables. If you don’t play golf it’s still nice to walk on the cart path right before sunset when all the parrots are active. It is a bit isolated, although you can walk for 20 minutes and find a decent ex-pat bar called the Picasso Bar and Grill, a gyro place and a convenience store. A $4 can will get you out to the highway where there are a bunch of stores including two big grocery stores.
